Toyota's European Engine and Transmission Plant in Poland turns 10

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland (TMMP) — Toyota's engine and only transmission manufacturing facility located in Europe — will officially celebrate its 10th year of operations in Wałbrzych, Poland on June 7. TMMP currently produces manual transmissions and 1.0-litre petrol engines destined to be fitted to the majority of Toyota's locally produced core models in Europe, including the Toyota AYGO, Yaris, Auris, Verso and Avensis. TMMP also supplies engine parts to Toyota's engine production facilities outside of Europe, making it a key facility for the company globally.

The first 5-speed transmission unit was produced at the Polish facility on April 10, 2002 and fitted to a Toyota Yaris at Toyota Motor Manufacturing France. The official opening ceremony of the facility took place on June 7 of the same year. Since then, TMMP has produced more than 6 million units, including the 4-millionth transmission in January this year, and the 2-millionth engine unit in September, 2011.

TMMP President, Carl Klemm, said: "For 10 years, we have proved that our company is an important production base for Toyota in Europe, supplying key components to most of Toyota's locally based manufacturing facilities."

He added: "Our high production quality is already recognised by our mother company in Japan. We also have a very successful CSR programme in Poland. With the help of our members, we have also been recognised as upstanding corporate citizens in our local community."

Toyota's Polish manufacturing facility has seen two expansions in the last 10 years, first during 2003-2005 and more recently during 2006-2008. Toyota's investment in the Wałbrzych region in Poland and TMMP's employment rate has increased fivefold since 2002. Toyota's current investment in TMMP is approximately EUR 500 million (approximately PLN 2 billion) and employs some 1,700 employees.

Built on a 520,000 m² site, TMMP's five workshops for forging, casting, engine and two transmission assemblies occupy a total surface area of some 100,000 m². At peak capacity, TMMP can product up to 371,000 engine units as well as 720,000 transmission units annually, making it Toyota's biggest unit production plant outside of Japan.
