Exterior Design

The 2014 Camry builds on the bold, simple-yet-elegant exterior of the 7th generation model with more dynamic, eye-catching front and rear styling. The sheer strength of the new design is enhanced by subtle detail touches which reinforce the Camry's status as a prestigious, premium-quality sedan.

The all-new front features a striking expression of Toyota's Under Priority design philosophy which awards the 2014 Camry with a more powerful road presence than ever before.

The bonnet combines the Camry-trademark raised central area with a new, prestige-enhancing chrome front lip. Below, a slender new upper grille and headlamp cluster treatment is unified by a chrome trim capping which runs the full width of the vehicle. This trim detail tapers as it runs from the central badge to the headlamp cluster extremity, adding a strong sense of refinement and luxury to the design.

The headlamp clusters themselves combine a high beam reflector, low beam projector, turn signal and integral LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) within one slimmer, more aggressively styled housing.

Reflecting Toyota's Under Priority design principles, the full-width bumper is dominated by a large, trapezoidal lower grille. The new, crisply-articulated 6-bar grille is lipped with a chrome finish which flows into new, deeply-recessed fog lamp housings, and underscored by an aerodynamic front spoiler.

The curve of the front bumper from grille to wheel arch is interrupted by sharply sculpted, brake- and engine bay-cooling air intakes which further emphasise the broad, dynamic frontal stance of the 2014 Camry.

In profile, the 2014 Camry combines the clean, forward-leaning wedge shape of the current generation model with a slight increase in front and rear overhangs, making it 25 mm longer than before. The vehicle's elegant, strongly defined appearance is further enhanced by new, chrome-free side rocker styling and a new 17" alloy wheel design.

To the rear, the 2014 Camry features new LED combination lamps and a new, wrap-around bumper design which flows from the rear wheel arches to emphasise the vehicle's width and stable, muscular rear stance.

This overall sense of width is further accentuated by a slender new chrome license plate garnish which extends into the rear combination lamps, and new, more articulate lower bumper styling anchored by reflector inserts at the extremities.

The 2014 Camry will be available in a range of 7 exterior colours, of which two -Grey Mica metallic and Dark Blue Mica metallic are new.

Interior Design

Building on the sophistication and prestige of the current model, the spacious interior of the 2014 Camry has been significantly upgraded with a focus on the high technology and perceived quality appropriate to a premium sedan.

An ergonomically ideal driving position is now further improved through the addition of a new, more comfortable, three-spoke steering wheel. The driver's instrument binnacle has been redesigned, and now features a 4.2" TFT multi-information display between the Optitron rev counter and speedometer dials.

Controlled via steering wheel-mounted switchgear, the full-colour TFT screen offers drivers a comprehensive range of information on navigation, driving statistics, warning messages, and phone and audio presets.

Incorporating either a 6.1" or 7" full-colour multimedia screen, audio and air-conditioning controls, the centre console has been completely redesigned with improved switchgear functionality and tactility.

The gear shift lever grille is now finished in a new, Dark grey colour, the A-pillars are finished with a new fabric and a new Crotch wood finish is available for the dashboard, centre console and door ornamentation panels.

New illumination has been added for both driver and front passenger footwells. And, reinforcing perceptions of luxury and quality in the revised cabin, all interior lighting, including instrument back-lighting, has been harmonised throughout with a cool, clear blue colour.

The elegance of the new interior is further enhanced by a choice of two colour schemes: Black, incorporating either a newly designed fabric or perforated leather upholstery, and a new, refined and luxurious Flaxen finish featuring full leather upholstery.

DRIVING PERFORMANCE

  • New 2.0 litre petrol engine with Variable Valve Timing-intelligent Wide (VVT-iW) allows both Atkinson and Otto cycle operation
  • Atkinson cycle low revs operation reduces fuel consumption by 13% to just 7.2 l/100 km
  • New 6-speed Multi-mode automatic transmission
  • New preload front differential for improved standing start acceleration and high speed stability
  • Fine tuned suspension and Electric Power Steering (EPS) for improved ride comfort and steering feel
  • Improved NVH performance for an even quieter cabin environment

ENGINES AND TRANSMISSIONS

New 2.0 Litre Petrol Engine with VVT-iW

Replacing the existing 2.0 litre unit and its 4-speed automatic transmission, the 2014 Camry benefits from a brand new, Euro V-compliant, 4-cylinder, 1,998 cc, 16v, DOHC petrol engine mated to a 6-speed Multi-mode automatic transmission.

With a high, 12.8:1 compression ratio, the new engine generates maximum power of 150 DIN hp/110 kW at 5,600 - 6,500 rpm, and maximum torque of 199 Nm at 4,600 rpm. This accelerates the Camry from 0-100 km/h in 10.4 seconds, and on to a top speed of 210 km/h. At 7.2 l/100 km, fuel consumption is a substantial 13% less than that of the outgoing engine.

Several highly sophisticated technologies have been adopted to achieve these values, including a new Variable Valve Timing-intelligent Wide (VVT-iW) system. VVT-iW features standard VVT-i on the exhaust valves and VVT-iW on the intake side. The latter features a mid-position camshaft lock mechanism which retards the continuously variable valve timing.

This allows the engine to run in the Atkinson cycle at low revs for improved fuel economy and lower emissions, and in the Otto cycle at higher engine speeds, for enhanced power delivery and performance, whilst delivering high torque output throughout the rev band.

The new 2.0 litre unit also benefits from Toyota's D-4S fuel injection system. With separate twin injectors for both direct and port injection, D-4S performs both high-pressure direct injection into the cylinder and conventional intake port injection, or direct cylinder injection only, in accordance with engine speed. Hence, intake air and fuel are mixed evenly at all engine speed ranges, increasing throttle response, power and torque over a wide range of engine speeds without sacrificing fuel efficiency and environmental performance.

In addition, the unit is equipped with a water-cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. This system combines a highly-efficient EGR cooler with a highly-responsive, electronically-controlled EGR valve to give optimum control of the EGR gas flow volume for equal distribution to each cylinder, enhancing fuel economy.

Numerous additional measures have been adopted to further improve both engine performance and fuel economy. The shapes of the cylinder head intake port and piston have been optimised, creating tumble flow inside the cylinder for enhanced combustion. Improved cylinder block and head cooling, piston oil jet cooling and an optimised taper squish shape improve anti-knock performance, realising a high compression ratio of 12.8:1.

An offset crankshaft reduces the piston thrust load to lower friction losses. Allied to enhanced cylinder bore roundness, a resin coating to the piston skirts and lower tension piston rings reduce friction losses from the rotating parts. And the adoption of roller rocker arms and a low friction timing chain further reduce valvetrain friction losses.

2.5 Litre 4-cylinder Petrol Engine

The 4-cylinder, 2,494 cc, 16 valve DOHC petrol engine generates 133 kW/181 DIN hp at 6,000 rpm and a maximum 231 Nm of torque at 4,100 rpm. It will accelerate the Camry from 0-100 km/h in 9.0 seconds, and on to a top speed of 210 km/h. The 2.5 litre unit offers class-leading fuel efficiency of 7.8 l/100 km.

Numerous features boost engine performance, maximise fuel efficiency and lower emissions. They include a highly-efficient intake port; an improved, variable intake manifold Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS); a Tumble Control Valves (TCV) system; Dual VVT-i for both intake and exhaust camshafts; the adoption of roller rocker arms; low tension piston rings; multi-point oil jets and a variable output oil pump.

3.5 Litre V6 Petrol Engine

Also benefiting from performance and fuel efficiency enhancing features such as ACIS and Dual VVT-i, the Euro V-compliant, 3,456 cc V6 petrol engine generates 204 kW/ 250 DIN hp at 6,200 rpm and a maximum 346 Nm of torque at 4,700 rpm.

The unit produces a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.1 seconds, and maximum speed is 230 km/h. Conversely, fuel consumption is just 9.3 l/100 km.

6-speed Automatic Transmission

All three petrol engines are mated to a new 6-speed Multi-mode automatic transmission.

The intelligent Electronically Controlled Transmissions (ECT) feature Flex Lock-up Control, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-SHIFT Control, an Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF), and an Eco Driving indicator. In combination these features offer smooth shifting and low noise with excellent performance and fuel economy.

DRIVING DYNAMICS

New Preload Differential

Marking its first application in conjunction with an automatic transmission, the 2014 Camry is now fitted with a preload differential on the front axle.

A plate spring located between the side gear and side gear washer within the differential adds preload by generating frictional force in the sliding parts under light loads or low rotational speed differences. This provides torque to limit the differential motion between the right and left driven wheels. Under mid to high loads that exceed the plate spring pressure, system operation is identical to an open differential.

The preload differential offers numerous driving benefits. It improves vehicle control both under acceleration from a standstill and during cornering, and improves straight line stability both driving over rough terrain and at high cruising speeds.

Retuned Suspension and Electric Power Steering (EPS)

The shock absorber characteristics of the proven, front and rear independent MacPherson strut suspension systems have been fine tuned to improve ride comfort.

And the Camry's computer-controlled, vehicle speed-sensitive Electric Power Steering (EPS) system has also been tuned to combine accuracy and precise control with better feel at all vehicle speeds.

Improved Noise and Vibration Performance

Toyota engineers adopted a new approach to NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) control in the current generation Camry, focusing on creating an optimum sound 'balance' between welcome sounds, such as pleasant engine noise, and unwelcome sounds, such as mechanical friction.

Moreover, they concentrated on suppressing sounds that stand out near the frequency of human speak, making it easier for occupants to converse. The acoustic fine-tuning associated with this unique approach awards the current Camry the class-leading cabin quietness expected of a prestige sedan.

The 2014 Camry builds on this pedigree by increasing the amount of sound damping material within the front doors, and also increasing the amount of sound absorbing material within the front doors and beneath the carpet, making the interior quieter still to create an even more comfortable, luxurious cabin environment.

Windscreen De-icer

Two versions of a new windscreen de-icing system are available, depending on model grade. Lower grade models feature a partial de-icing system which uses a network of fine heating wires integrated within the bottom of the windscreen to free the wipers for use by melting ice and snow around the contact area of the blades.

Higher grade models benefit from a fine wire network which covers the entire screen for full windscreen de-icing.

Wireless Mobile Phone Charging[1]

A new wireless charging system allows vehicle occupants to recharge their mobile telephones simply by resting them on a dedicated pad located in front of the centre console armrest.

The system technology is, thus far, compatible with Nexus and Nokia phones. For the recharging of Apple and Samsung products, an accessory phone cover is required.

Three-Zone Air Conditioning with nanoe™ technology

The 2014 Camry may be equipped with a three-zone air conditioning system, providing the independent driver, front passenger and rear seat temperature control appropriate to a prestige sedan.

The air conditioning system incorporates a nanoe™ technology system.

This segment-first technology operates automatically when the air conditioning is turned on. It releases 5 to 20 nm nanoe™ particles -negatively charged ions wrapped in water molecules- into the cabin via the driver’s side dashboard air vent.

nanoe™ moisture content is approximately 1,000 times that of conventional ions, and the particles have mildly acidic properties. As a result, nanoe™ particles have a gently moisturising effect on skin and hair, whilst creating a crisp and refreshing interior atmosphere.

Front & Rear Seat Luxury

Its luxurious environment further enhanced by new, clear blue interior lighting, the cabin of the 2014 Camry now features 60:40-split rear folding seats and may be equipped with a full range of comfort and convenience enhancing technology more usually associated with premium segment vehicles.

A new memory pack memorises settings for the driver’s seat, steering column and rear view mirrors.

Operable from a centre armrest control panel, the left and right rear seats may be both independently reclined and heated. The control panel also incorporates a switch for temperature adjustment of the independent rear air-conditioning.

Further switchgear offers full control of the vehicle’s audio system. Rear doors incorporate easy-to-use pull-up sunshades, while a rear window sunshade is power operated by switches both in the front and rear of the cabin.

 ADVANCED MULTIMEDIA SYSTEMS

The 2014 Camry offers customers a unique range of multimedia equipment choices, from the most affordable touch-screen interface to the most sophisticated satellite navigation yet created by Toyota, as well as a new, power-saving JBL premium sound system.

Upgraded Toyota Touch® 2 and Toyota Touch® 2 with Go Plus systems now feature an uprated WVGA display with 800 x 480 screen resolution, giving a much brighter, sharper image. The screen now supports ‘drag and flick’ control for easy, intuitive operation.

Toyota Touch® 2

Fitted as standard, Toyota Touch® 2 is a 6.1", full colour, touch-screen interface which represents a new approach to on-board multimedia systems. In a choice of 20 languages, it offers a wide range of interactive functions without the added expense of an integral satellite navigation system, making it available to the widest possible range of customers.

It incorporates AM/FM radio with enhanced FM reception through the first use of two tuners and two antennae, a CD/MP3 player, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity with a music streaming facility, and a USB port for the connection of portable music players, with the facility to display iPod album cover art. In addition, a rear view camera is fitted as standard.

New for 2014, Toyota Touch® 2 is now ‘MirrorLink’ ready, which enables users to connect compatible smartphones and then operate them entirely from the system’s touch screen.

Toyota Touch® 2 with Go Plus

Toyota Touch® 2 with Go Plus offers customers an enhanced, full map navigation system featuring 3D city landmark graphics.

Available in 20 languages, it includes all the most popular navigation functions, such as speed limits, speed camera warnings, automatic zoom, motorway signposting and junction view at motorway intersections. The map zoom function is now more easily controlled by a simple rotary button.

Via the Toyota Online function, the system offers on-board connectivity to an expanded range of services including Toyota Real Time Traffic powered by TomTom, Google Street View, Panoramio and Google Local Search –the largest and most up-to-date search database in the world.

Via Real Time Traffic the driver receives real-time traffic updates about any incidents or congestion along his route, and, if necessary, the system provides detour options.

Google Street View helps the driver to familiarise himself with his destination before he arrives. He can see what the surrounding area is like, and even where he might park the car.

Panoramio goes one step further. It provides user-uploaded images of city landmarks and places of interest. The driver can check on the map for any POI, view a full image of it and then lets the navigation system guide him there.

Google Local Search is an additional POI database enhanced by an online search function. It allows the user to find any type of place of interest more easily.

Touch 2 with Go Plus also supports Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing the system to connect to any Wi-Fi network for data transfer instead of a Bluetooth connection. This could be a Wi-Fi hotspot which the driver has set-up with his smartphone but also a public hotspot along the street or the driver’s private Wi-Fi network at home when parked in front of the house. The Wi-Fi signal is then used for data transfer, instead of a Bluetooth connection.

 JBL® GreenEdge™ Premium Sound System

The 2014 Camry may be equipped with a 10-speaker, JBL® Matrix Premium Sound System. The system incorporates GreenEdge™ technology which reduces operational power requirements by up to 80% of those of a conventional on-board audio system.

The new JBL® Matrix system allows owners to enjoy 5.1 matrix channel surround sound on selected CDs and DVDs.

JBL®’s GreenEdge™ technology focuses on four key design parameters to produce greater output with a minimum of input power. It offers a higher system capability with lifelike dynamics and lower transient distortion. Conventional, linear on-axis response is replaced by active sound equalisation, and the high-efficiency loudspeakers feature custom designed lenses and horns to modify directivity and increase output.

At the heart of the system is a class H JBL® GreenEdge™ 8-channel amplifier, which is 66% smaller and lighter than comparable units. Because audio input is measured in real time, only the necessary electricity is provided to the amplification circuit. This greatly reduces heat loss, and effects a 50% reduction in current consumption.

The amplifier drives 10 highly efficient, JBL® GreenEdge™ speakers, which generate twice the sound output power for the same amount of current. Key to the system’s enhanced sound dynamics and resolution are three 6.5 cm speakers, one located centrally within the dashboard, and two on the rear parcel shelf. Equipped with wide-dispersion acoustic lenses, these speakers are positioned to enhance the sense of three-dimensional sound in every seat, significantly expanding the system ‘sweet spot’ within the cabin.

The sound spectrum is completed by two dashboard-mounted twin cone speakers, two 7” x 10” front door-mounted woofers, and one rear-mounted 7” x 10” woofer. The intensity, presence and deep bass of the sound creates a realistic, movie theatre-like soundscape that seems to extend beyond the cabin.

ENHANCED ACTIVE SAFETY

The 2014 Camry is equipped with an expanded range of the technically advanced active and passive safety features befitting a prestige sedan.

It is fitted, as standard, with the full range of braking, traction control and stability systems on the market today: ABS anti-lock brakes, complete with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRC) and an advanced Vehicle Stability Control system (VSC).

New for 2014, both TRC and VSC may be switched off via an instrument panel-mounted switch, helping the driver to free the vehicle should it get stuck in mud or snow.

Within a highly rigid bodyshell designed to offer maximum occupant protection, passive safety features incorporate a comprehensive range of 9 airbags, including segment-first rear seat side airbags, and Whiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) front seats which reduce whiplash injuries during rear end collisions.

Three new features have been added to the 2014 Camry's list of active safety equipment, which already included Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS), rear parking sensors and a rear camera for parking assistance.

Blind Spot Monitor (BSM)

The BSM system notifies drivers of a vehicle travelling in an adjacent lane in their blind spot by both sounding a buzzer and illuminating a BSM warning icon mounted in the outer door mirror surface.

Activated at speeds of over 40 km/h, the system uses radar sensors mounted on both sides of the rear of the Camry, which monitor the area up to 3 metres behind and up to 1 meter forwards from the rear of the vehicle.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)

The RCTA system employs the BSM radar to alert the driver backing out of a parking space to approaching vehicles which may not be visible in either the rear view monitor or door mirrors. When approaching vehicles are detected, the system flashes the BSM warning icon on the door mirrors and also sounds a warning buzzer.

Auto High Beam (AHB)

Integrated within the Camry's AFS headlamps, AHB monitors the road ahead for both leading and oncoming traffic, and automatically alternates between high and low beam illumination accordingly.
