Toyota has been developing and refining its own, industry-leading technology, Hybrid Synergy Drive®, for more than 30 years. Global sales of the company's full hybrid cars are on target to reach 3 million units by the end of the year. In Europe, over 300,000 units have already been sold.
With the launch of Auris HSD in July, Toyota has taken the fundamental step of making its full hybrid technology accessible to a broader customer base. The company intends to deploy Hybrid Synergy Drive® technology across its entire European model range in the early 2020's.
The Auris HSD introduces the benefits of full hybrid drive to the C-segment hatchback for the first time, rewarding customers with fuel consumption of only 3.8 l / 100 km, CO2 emissions of just 89 g / km and full-electric driving for up to 25 % of typical city trips1.
European sales of Auris HSD have already exceeded the entire year's production of 14,000 units, an indication of how rapidly Toyota's full hybrid technology is winning market acceptance. 2011 sales are expected to more than double, targeting 31,000 units.
This year, Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive® powertrain was again awarded the title 'Green Engine of the Year'. In addition, the Auris HSD was voted 'WhatGreenCar of the Year 2010' by a selected group of UK's leading green transport and environmental experts. Toyota's full hybrid stood out amongst the tested cars for its 'advanced drive, state of the art driver control options, affordability and conventional looks'.
The Auris HSD was also successful in this year's Austrian Autoreview awards, ranking second in the 'Alternative Powertrain' category, yet first as a mainstream model.
The Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club e.V. (ADAC) driving safety centre recently hosted the Auris Hybrid Eco Challenge. 25 amateur and professional teams, selected from 4,000 applicants, competed to achieve the lowest possible average fuel consumption. The winning team returned 3.86 l / 100 km in the combined cycle, 4.4 l / 100km on the open road, and just 2.66 l / 100km under urban driving conditions.
In addition, the Auris HSD received a maximum, 5 star rating in ADAC's EcoTest. With a total of 94 points, the Toyota full hybrid gained the highest score ever achieved in this reputable environmental test. In the EcoTest's two measured categories, fuel efficiency and environmental pollution, the Auris HSD gained an outstanding score of 44 for its fuel efficiency, and the highest possible mark -50 out of 50- in the environmental pollution category.
Since ADAC launched its EcoTest in 2002, more than 100 models have been tested. To date, 5 stars —equivalent to more than 90 points- have been awarded to just seven models.
With this record-breaking result, the Auris HSD becomes the most environmentallyfriendly car ever tested at ADAC.
