<p>Designed, engineered and built in Europe, the all-new Avensis makes its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show. Built on the success of the previous two models, the 3rd generation Avensis brings a new level of superior quality, dynamic handling and refined ride comfort to Toyota&rsquo;s European flagship.</p>

<p>As Takashi Yamamoto, Chief Engineer of the new Avensis, explains: &ldquo;From the start, we have put a strong European mark on the project. A total of 35 engineers from Toyota Motor Europe were invited to Japan to join forces with the Toyota Motor Corporation development team. When the project team returned to Europe for finalisation, these engineers played a key role in the knowledge transfer between the two development teams. I think this is one of the key reasons why today we can look back at a highly efficient development process and be proud of our achievement, that I believe is nothing less than &ldquo;Cutting Edge&rdquo; of the D-segment&rdquo;.</p>

<p>The all-new Avensis will also contribute to reduce Toyota&rsquo;s CO<sub>2</sub> fleet average to 140 g/km by 2009. The new &lsquo;Toyota Optimal Drive&rsquo; philosophy is applied to this model through a powerful new range of petrol engines, upgraded diesel engines and new advanced transmissions offering customers reduced emissions, yet without compromising on power and driving pleasure.</p>

<p>Conceived by ED<sup>2</sup> &ndash; Toyota&rsquo;s advanced design studio in the South of France &ndash; the all-new Avensis expresses power, yet without relying on mass to do so.</p>

<p>21<sup>st</sup> Century car designers and engineers must resolve unprecedented challenges. New models have to satisfy customer desire for more powerful engines, but with lower emissions. They want increased interior room, yet they want more compact cars with lower fuel consumption.</p>

<p>And perhaps there is no greater challenge today than resolving the paradox of creating an environmentally friendly car that is both powerful and a pleasure to drive, yet does not compromise on comfort and safety.</p>

<p>To address all these challenges, Toyota has developed its unique design language &ndash; Vibrant Clarity &ndash; founded on what it calls the J-factor. This refers to aspects of Japanese originality and quality, which are forward-looking, ingenious and spirited. One of the ways this manifests itself is that something new is created when contradictory elements are integrated in harmony. It is also the key to answering a long-standing paradox: how to create cars that are both energised and dynamic &ndash; Vibrant &ndash; but at the same time rational and innovative - Clarity.</p>

<p>Applying the J-factor has enabled the resolution of three key challenges of the new Avensis design:</p>

<p>The new Avensis will be available in two body shapes: a sedan and a wagon. These were designed in parallel, so instead of simply stretching and raising the rear section of the sedan, the Avensis Wagon was designed specifically for its purpose, and to match the same elegant flowing lines as the sedan.</p>

<p>The stance of both is athletic and sleek. The bonnet has been lowered, the slim front pillar flows forward and the rear quarter pillar is slanted backward to produce a flowing, aerodynamic silhouette. Excellent aerodynamics give a Coefficient of Drag (Cd) of just 0.28 for the sedan body type and 0.29 for the wagon body, which has helped in reducing the CO<sub>2</sub>-emisson levels.</p>

<p>Yet the powerful looks come with a responsible footprint. Avensis is just 50 mm longer than the previous generation, giving the sedan and the wagon a length of 4,695 mm and 4,765 mm respectively. Both versions have the same 2,700 mm wheelbase and they also keep the same height as their predecessors at 1,480 mm. Thanks to the new platform, the tread has been increased by between 30 mm and 45 mm, while the width of the car has increased by 50 mm, at 1,810 mm.</p>

<p>Relocating the tyres towards the outside edges of the floorplan has achieved a more solid, powerful presence, without adding unnecessary weight or mass. These are some of the ways in which Toyota&rsquo;s J-factor design philosophy, of bringing conflicting elements into harmony, has helped to create a dynamic new D-segment flagship.</p>

<p>The third generation Avensis is also more spacious inside than the previous model. Although the overall height is the same as the current model, the already generous headroom is slightly increased. The cargo area in the wagon is supremely flexible, with thoughtful features like sliding cargo rails to allow for dividing and securing separate loads. Retractable smart rear seats allow flexible one-touch flat folding to create extra space in both wagon and sedan.</p>

<p>The new instrument panel design maximizes interior width, emphasising the car&rsquo;s roominess. In the wagon version the feeling of luxurious space can be further enhanced by the panoramic roof, which creates a seamless connection to the outside environment.</p>

<p>The interior materials express prestige and dynamism. Available in black or in a combination of grey and beige, the dashboard trim has a softly textured, grained quality. The centre console comes in different layouts ranging from black metallic paint to titanium-tinted ornamentation, depending on grade. On the high grades, the all-new Avensis&rsquo; centre console features a warm graphic finish, which is inspired by Takesumi (charcoal made out of bamboo).</p>

<p>The instrument console has a flowing premium quality look with crisply illuminated speedometer and tacho-meter dials with chrome surrounding rings. The optitron display ensures clear legibility regardless of lighting conditions and helps to maintain your long sight vision, immediately after checking the meters.</p>

<h2><strong>Increased power and torque, lower class leading CO<sub>2</sub> emissions</strong></h2>

<p>The new &lsquo;Toyota Optimal Drive&rsquo; philosophy has been introduced to the all-new Avensis engine line-up with a clear focus on minimizing impact on the environment while maximizing driving pleasure through the increase of power and torque. One of the best examples of this philosophy is the new Valvematic petrol engine line-up with emissions decreased by 10 to 26% depending on derivative, while at the same time increasing power from 3 to 20%. Toyota&rsquo;s new Valvematic technology helps improve fuel efficiency, power/torque, engine response and reduces CO2 emission level by simultaneously controlling the valve timing and the valve lift.</p>

<p>The new 1.6-litre Valvematic benefits from a brand-new 6-speed manual transmission, which provides a great improvement in shift feeling. The 1.6 Valvematic power has been increased by 20% compared to the previous 1.6 VVT-i &ndash; up to 132 DIN hp, with torque up by 10Nm to 160 Nm at 4,400 rpm. The CO<sub>2</sub> emission level is reduced by 12% to 152 g/km* (sedan body type).</p>

<p>The new 1.8-litre Valvematic offers a choice of a new 6-speed manual transmission or a brand-new Multidrive S transmission, Toyota&rsquo;s latest continuously variable transmission technology. The 1.8 Valvematic power has been increased by 14% compared to the previous 1.8 VVT-i &ndash; up to 147 DIN hp, with torque up by 10 Nm to 180 Nm at 4,000 rpm. The CO<sub>2</sub> emission level is down by 10% to 154 g/km* when combined with the manual transmission version and by 16% to 157 g/km* when combined with the Multidrive S transmission (sedan body type).</p>

<p>At the top of the petrol range is the 2.0-litre Valvematic, which also comes with either the 6-speed manual transmission or the brand-new Multidrive S transmission. Its improved performance gives 152 DIN hp, an increase of 3% compared to the 2.0 D-4, and 196 Nm torque at 4,000 rpm. The CO<sub>2</sub> emission level is down by 15% to 163 g/km* when combined with the manual transmission version and by 26% to 164 g/km* when combined with the Multidrive S transmission (sedan body type). With these new petrol engines, the all-new Avensis delivers a top-class power to CO<sub>2</sub> ratio. The introduction of Toyota&rsquo;s Multidrive S transmission is a major development in the D-segment.</p>

<p>Multidrive S transmission gives an incredibly smooth, refined shift, automatically optimising the torque and fuel consumption by always using the optimum engine speed. When pressuring the engine a little harder, the transmission starts to behave like a 7-speed automatic transmission. This helps to eliminate the previously negative whining sound from a continuously variable transmission. For a sportier drive, the driver has simply to switch into the Sport mode. This mode will select a more responsive and power-maximising gear ratio by &ldquo;reading&rdquo; the driver&rsquo;s behaviour. For an even more active driving feel, the transmission features a sequential manual 7-speed mode. The gear selection is either performed by the gear shift lever or, exclusively for the 2.0-litre Valvematic, through the paddles located on each side of the steering wheel.</p>

<p>Another example of the &lsquo;Toyota Optimal Drive&rsquo; philosophy can be seen on the new Avensis diesel line-up. The three powerful and refined diesel engines on the new generation Avensis have been re-engineered to deliver more torque at lower speed leading to lower emissions,and now all meet Euro V standards. The D-4D engines have been upgraded with new piezo injectors and a higher common rail pressure at 2,000 bar. These new diesel engine technology features lead to CO2 level reduction from 2,5 to 10% depending on the powertrain compared to the outgoing model.</p>

<p>The 2.0-litre D-4D 125 engine, available with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), delivers power via a 6-speed manual transmission with a refined &lsquo;shift feel&rsquo;. It produces 126 DIN hp and 310 Nm torque between 1,800 and 2,400 rpm. Emissions are reduced by 7% to 134 g/km* when equipped with Oxydation Catalytic Converter (CCo), and by 9% to 139 g/km* when fitted with the DPF (sedan body type).</p>

<p>The 2.2-litre D-4D 150 offers a well-balanced proposition of power and economy. Power output is 150 DIN hp while torque has been increased on this engine by nearly 10% to 340 Nm between 2,000 and 2,800 rpm. In addition, its wide torque range means maximum torque is available in most driving conditions, without the need for frequent gear changes.</p>

<p>As a Toyota first on a diesel passenger car, a brand-new 6-speed automatic transmission is offered on the 2.2 D-4D 150. It provides a fast shift response while</p>

<p>eliminating harsh shift shocks. It has a Sport mode that intelligently &ldquo;reads&rdquo; the driver&rsquo;s behaviour and accordingly adjusts its gear change pattern. This new automatic transmission also offers the exhilaration of a sequential manual mode. By moving into the M-gate, the driver can change gear either by using the sequential shift of the gearshift lever or by using paddle-shifts on the steering wheel. This engine derivative is equipped with Toyota&rsquo;s unique emissions control technology called Toyota D-CAT, delivering a CO<sub>2</sub> emission level below 180 g/km*. The Toyota D-CAT technology reduces Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), and particulate emissions at the same time. The technology is maintenance-free and doesn&rsquo;t require any component replacement.</p>

<p>The D-4D 150 will also be available with a 6-speed manual transmission, this combination comes with a standard DPF with CO<sub>2</sub> emissions reduced by 6% to 147 g/km* (sedan body type).</p>

<p>Top of the range diesel is the 2.2 D-4D 180. The unique combination of a low compression ratio and high boost turbocharger creates remarkable power output and engine efficiency. With 177 DIN hp of power and a torque delivery of 400 Nm across a range from 2,000 to 2,800 rpm, this is among the most powerful diesel cars in the D-segment. It delivers 0-100km/h in just 8.5 seconds with a CO<sub>2</sub> emission level of 157 g/km* (sedan body type), making it one of the least CO<sub>2</sub> emitting high power diesels in the market today. It also features the Toyota D-CAT technology.</p>

<p>All Avensis models have driving indicators to help you drive more efficiently. The on-board computer features an ECO driving indicator for the 6-speed automatic and the Multidrive S transmission versions. This ECO driving indicator shows to the driver how efficient his or her driving behaviour is. On the manual versions, the new Avensis features a Gear Shift Indicator, which advises the driver on the best timing to shift up or down the gear.</p>

<p>The new Avensis has been engineered to achieve smooth ride comfort, yet with dynamic handling to provide maximum driving pleasure.</p>

<p>A new platform has been adopted to provide an excellent balance between high-speed stability and agility at low speeds. To enhance driving performance, both the front McPherson strut and rear double wishbone suspension have been re-engineered with improvements to torsional stiffness and roll rigidity. Front shock absorber and rear lateral force steer specifications are also upgraded.</p>

<p>New large diameter wheels and large tread tyres are fitted to further enhance stability and dynamic handling. A new flush under-floor design optimises high speed stability, reduces noise and contributes to better fuel efficiency by improving aerodynamic characteristics.</p>

<p>These substantial changes are aimed at achieving the optimum combination of smooth, relaxed ride comfort and dynamic yet stable driving performance.</p>

<h2><strong>Leveraging superior quality, further enhancing safety level</strong></h2>

<p>Back in 2003, the previous Avensis model was the first vehicle to achieve the 5-star rating for adult occupant protection under the new and tougher Euro NCAP testing legislation in force at that time. The all-new Avensis will further build on this achievement with the aim at reaching the 5-star rating under the even more stringent Euro NCAP rating planned for 2009.</p>

<p>The all-new Avensis&rsquo; active and passive safety levels are brought to a higher level thanks to new high-tech safety features.</p>

<p>In the early development phase of the new Avensis, a major requirement was to once again present a car with an advanced safety level. The new Avensis is equipped with seven airbags, including a driver&rsquo;s knee airbag, front airbags for the driver and front passenger, two front side airbags and two side curtain shield airbags front and rear. Active front seat headrests are introduced to reduce whiplash injuries in rear end collisions.</p>

<p>Steering assist Vehicle Stability Control (VSC+) has been newly adopted. This driving dynamics system increases the protection normally given by VSC during sudden handling changes or slippery roads, by adding a steering torque assist that counteracts yaw movement when the vehicle understeers or oversteers in reaction to an emergency. Practically this means that in an extreme situation, the driver may sense some torque movement on the steering wheel in a given direction to compensate the under- /oversteer and so can further enhance the adjustment made by the VSC itself.</p>

<p>Together with the optional High-Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-xenon headlamps, comes the Adaptive Front-light System (AFS). By measuring the speed of the vehicle and steering wheel rotation, it predicts which area in front of the vehicle it has to light and adjusts headlamps in accordance, for instance as the car corners in the dark. To compensate for heavy load at the rear of the car, it automatically lowers the angle of the beam before starting. While driving you benefit from the dynamic headlamp levelling, which means that it compensates for heavy braking and acceleration by adjusting the headlamp angle.</p>

<p>As standard, the new Avensis comes with emergency brake signal. This is introduced in an effort to avoid rear end collisions by automatically activating flashing brake lights during emergency braking.</p>

<p>A new Pre-Crash Safety (PCS) system is also optionally available exclusively on the 2.2-litre D-4D 6-speed automatic transmission Premium grade to predict possible collisions and take action to reduce damage, should an impact occur while driving. It gives a warning to the driver if danger is sensed ahead. If the system detects an unavoidable crash, it automatically activates the seatbelt pre-tensioners and applies full brake force to lessen the impact of the crash.</p>

<p>Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) works in tandem with the Pre-Crash Safety (PCS) system, as it uses the same advanced technology. ACC enables the vehicle to maintain a set distance to the vehicle ahead, even if that vehicle varies its speed. Once the road ahead is clear, ACC automatically returns to the originally specified cruising speed.</p>

<p>To complete the list of new advanced safety specifications available for the all-new Avensis, the Pre-Crash Safety (PCS) system comes with Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA). These systems help to prevent unintended lane-changes by giving an audible warning and applying a corrective steering wheel torque to keep you in lane.</p>

<p>The all-new Avensis has reduced NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) considerably and Toyota&rsquo;s advanced lightweight insulation material has contributed to lower the interior noise level by a significant 5 dB. The new model is one of the quietest in the D-segment and close to the D-premium segment level. Along with engineering a stiff chassis, and leading-edge aerodynamics this has been achieved by carefully optimizing the location of materials, without adding unnecessary weight by over-using insulation. This helps to maintain a reasonable weight of the vehicle, and hence bring CO<sub>2</sub> emissions to a lower level.</p>

<p>Avensis enjoys an excellent and well-earned reputation for Quality, Durability and Reliability (QDR). It has scored high in independent customer satisfaction surveys &ndash; like JD Power customer satisfaction. And it has won numerous accolades from motoring magazines and motoring organisations, such as Best in Segment from ADAC, Europe&rsquo;s biggest automobile club.</p>

<p>The all-new Avensis, as a European core model, will continue to be built at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK plant in Burnaston with their built-in quality assurance based on the world-famous Toyota Production System. The Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK plant in Deeside will supply the 1.6 and 1.8 Valvematic engines while the Toyota Motor Industries Poland (TMIP) plant will supply 2.0 and 2.2 D-4D engines. The Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland (TMMP) plant will provide the TMUK plant with the new 6-speed manual transmission.</p>

<p>Keeping the Takashi Yamamoto&rsquo;s &ldquo;cutting edge of D-segment&rdquo; statement in mind, the level of advanced technology available on the 4 equipment grade levels of the third generation Avensis fully reflects a cutting edge positioning.</p>

<p>The entry Avensis-grade level is well specified, with standard equipment such as manual air-conditioning, front power windows and a MP3-compatible radio/CD audio system featuring 6-speaker. The centre cluster and console is offered in a black metallic finish. 16-inch steel wheels come as standard and Steering assist Vehicle Stability Control (VSC+) with Traction Control (TRC) is available either standard or optional depending on market to enhance driving dynamics and safety.</p>

<p>The Sol grade model has an impressive array of equipment. Automatic dual zone air-conditioning is standard, featuring left and right independent temperature controls, allowing separate temperature regulation for the driver and front seat passengers. Leather steering wheel and gear shift add to the quality feeling. Outside there are 16-inch alloys, front fog lamps and sensors to automatically switch on headlamps when ambient light falls, and wipers at the first drops of rain.</p>

<p>There is a boot-through feature in the centre of the rear seats for stowage of long objects as skis, while the wagon features optional cargo space rails and hooks to secure cargos safely.</p>

<p>Cruise control with speed limiter and a full-map touch-screen (6,5&rdquo;) navigation with Bluetooth connectivity (for cellular phone and audio streaming) are available. Power-folding mirrors and electrochromatic (auto-dimming) rear-view mirror is also an option on this grade.</p>

<p>Unique Takesumi-inspired graphics adorn the centre console of the Executive grade. The back window of the sedan has a sunshade, while the wagon benefits from privacy glass. It offers a Smart Entry and push start system, which detects the presence of an electronic &lsquo;key&rsquo; within a range of about 1m from the car. A touch-sensor on the back of the driver&rsquo;s door handle allows the door to be opened and the car can be then started using the push button on the instrument panel. When locking the car, you simply slide your finger over the seamlessly integrated touch sensor on top of the door handle. 17-inch alloys come as standard.</p>

<p>The Executive grade also offers an optional full-map touch-screen (7&rdquo;) navigation with Multimedia-pack, which includes Bluetooth connectivity for cellular phone and audio streaming, an 11-speaker Premium Audio system, a 10 GB HDD music server and a rear parking camera. A leather luxury pack with electrically adjustable seats with 2 memory settings is also available. This pack also includes electrical tilt and telescopic steering wheel with 2 memory settings.</p>

<p>High-Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-xenon headlamps with Adaptive Front light System (AFS), panoramic roof on the wagon and rear parking sensors are other optional specifications.</p>

<p>Outside, the striking 18-inch alloys accentuate the Premium grade&rsquo;s flowing side profile. It comes as standard with the Luxury pack which includes the high quality leather seats in a choice of black or in a combination of grey and beige and an electrical tilt and telescopic steering wheel. Also standard are the High-Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-xenon headlamps with Adaptive Front light System (AFS), rear parking sensors, back and rear side window sunshades for the sedan and the panoramic roof and privacy glass for the wagon. The only remaining options on the premium flagship are the full-map touch-screen (7&rdquo;) navigation with Multimedia-pack and exclusively for the 2.2-litre D-4D 6-speed automatic transmission, the Pre-Crash Safety (PSC) system, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and the Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) systems.</p>

<h2><strong>A new kind of urban all-roader</strong></h2>

<p>Demand for fuel-efficient urban vehicles, that are just as at home on winding mountain roads as they are in the city, is growing strongly. However, Europe&rsquo;s urban customers are very demanding too. They want individual looks; they want cars that do not take up too much space in the city. And, ever increasingly, they want cars with a small carbon footprint.</p>

<p>The scene is therefore set for a new kind of urban all-roader, and the timing perfect for the world premiere of the new Toyota Urban Cruiser 1.4 D-4D All Wheel Drive at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. Since the preview of its breakthrough design at Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, the Urban Cruiser production model has been eagerly awaited.</p>

<p>Its compact but rugged looks make it the perfect new challenger in the urban all-roader market. As the Urban Cruiser Chief Engineer, Kosuke Shibahara, explains, &ldquo;With class-leading low emissions, the Urban Cruiser provides an ideal solution to the growing customer demand for flexible, yet socially responsible vehicles. The Urban Cruiser represents a new form of recreation vehicle with its distinctive personality and responsible All Wheel Drive performance. With many countries starting to introduce CO<sub>2</sub> based taxation on vehicles, there&rsquo;s never been a better time to launch an urban car that&rsquo;s enjoyable to drive, both in and out of the city, yet with exceptionally low CO<sub>2</sub> emissions&rdquo;.</p>

<p>The Urban Cruiser will go on sale in May 2009. Full year sales objectives are forecasted above 30,000 units with an All Wheel Drive mix of approximately 50%.</p>

<h2>&nbsp;</h2>

<h2><strong>Rugged good looks in a compact package</strong></h2>

<p>On view in Paris for the first time, the interior of the Urban Cruiser is quite unlike any B-segment vehicle on the road today.</p>

<p>Designed by ED<sup>2</sup> &ndash; Toyota&rsquo;s advanced design studio in the South of France &ndash; the interior concept captivates all the senses, with a heady mix of sophisticated materials and innovative packaging.</p>

<p>Sitting in the driving seat, the eye is drawn instantly to a unique radar-style instrument design. Directly centred in front of the driver, the Toyota-designed concentric dial features both speedometer and tachometer needles within the same circle. This allows the strength and size of the instrument console to dominate the display, with more room on either side for easy-to-read indicators, such as drive monitor and gear shift indicator lamp.</p>

<p>The &lsquo;floating&rsquo; silver centre cluster is another innovative design feature. Its gentle cascading curves make it appear to float above the centre console, while ergonomically housing a range of functions and displays.</p>

<p>The seat design underscores the silver-accented sporty design of the cockpit. Attention to design detail is apparent throughout the interior, highlighting its sophisticated feel by the quality of each material surface.</p>

<p>Despite its compact overall length of 3,930 mm, Urban Cruiser&rsquo;s clever packaging ensures a large amount of interior space &ndash; plenty for five passengers and ample luggage space. Side by side shoulder room is also generous, while the car&rsquo;s front-to-rear occupant spacing gives ample legroom to rear seat passengers.</p>

<p>A long 2,460 mm wheelbase and short overhangs helps maximise overall interior space, giving class-leading cargo capacity of 314 litres or 749 litres with rear seats folded down.</p>

<p>The new Urban Cruiser is designed to appeal to the city driver. It presents a rugged, muscular appearance &ndash; yet has the contemporary five-door practicality and compact size of an urban car. Even though it displays a strong, athletic presence, it is less than 4 metres in length and only 1,725 mm wide. Overall height is low at just 1,540 mm, yet a high &lsquo;hip-point&rsquo; enables a commanding driving position.</p>

<p>From the front, the large upper grille and black underguard create a tough, sporty image. Headlamps reach around and outwards into the wings, emphasising the dynamic, highly individual styling. <p><span>At the Frankfurt Motor Show, Toyota presents a vision of an ultra compact, yet highly specified and modern urban car with the unveiling of a new small car concept in a revolutionary design.</span></p>

<p><span>Toyota also uses the Frankfurt Motor Show to showcase the latest updates in some of its most popular models in Europe.</span></p>

The new Yaris 1.0-litre will showcase Yaris intelligent technology for smart urban driving, with its economical and easy-to-drive style.</span></p>

<p><span>Indeed, when Toyota unveiled the first Prius, in 1997, it already had decades of background research when it started investigating the feasibility of using gas turbines to power an electric drive system for cars back in 1965. The system was actually displayed in a Toyota Sports 800 gas turbine hybrid at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1977 that promoted the philosophy: performance with respect for the environment.</span></p>

<p><span>It is still the same philosophy being followed today with Toyota&rsquo;s award winning Hybrid Synergy Drive&reg;.</span></p>

<p><span>From launch, Prius was an immediate commercial and critical success; the most technically advanced production car in the world and placing Toyota as a world leader in low emissions and hybrid technology. In the space of three years Prius gathered no less than 20 prestigious awards including the 1997 Japanese Car of the Year.</span></p>

<p><span>Launched in Europe in 2001, Prius moved into the second generation with Hybrid Synergy Drive&reg; in 2003 and was further revised at the start of 2006 to offer a fresh face and improved interior comfort and quality. At the same time, sharper driving dynamics were introduced with a series of chassis, suspension and steering enhancements.</span></p>

<p><span>Since launch, more than 750,000 Prius models (May YTD) have been sold worldwide and more than 66,000 are on the roads in Europe. Rising fuel prices and increasing environmental awareness plus, to a certain extent, preferential tax and city driving incentives are facilitating the change.</span></p>

<p><span>But customers who switch to Prius are not just doing it for lifestyle reasons; they are also extremely satisfied with their choice and the driving pleasure it offers. Toyota Prius has just topped the 2007 JD Power Customer Satisfaction survey in the UK and France, and the current generation Prius was named European Car of the Year 2005.</span></p>

<p><span>Prius has won the ADAC Eco-Test in Germany in 2004 and 2005, and in 2007, the 1.5-litre petrol engine of the Prius Hybrid Synergy Drive&reg; was named &ldquo;International Engine of the Year&rdquo; and &ldquo;Best New Engine&rdquo; in the International Engine of the Year awards. For the last four consecutive years, it has also won the &ldquo;Best Fuel Economy&rdquo; award.</span></p>

<p><span>Research shows that around 20% of customers switching to Prius have previously owned a luxury car. They are attracted by the environmental benefits of Prius but do not want to sacrifice performance or driving pleasure. Instead, they embrace the new technology and have high expectations of comfort and safety which Prius must satisfy.</span></p>

<p><span>Over the past 10 years, Toyota Prius has been continuously improved and refined. This process has ensured Prius offers not just reduced harmful emissions but also excellent driving dynamics and driving pleasure.</span></p>

<p><span>Today, the current Prius matches the performance of many conventional family cars with a top speed of and 0- acceleration in 10.9 seconds. Meanwhile Hybrid Synergy Drive&reg; technology achieves exhaust emissions that are among the cleanest in the world.</span></p>

<p><span>The first generation Prius, with the Toyota Hybrid System (THS), showed a level of improvement for carbon dioxide emissions of around 20% compared to conventional powertrains. For the second generation Prius, with Hybrid Synergy Drive&reg;, these emissions have again further fallen by 15%, from 120 g/km down to 104 g/km.</span></p>

<p><span>The latest generation Prius produces about 55% less CO2 and nearly half the nitrous oxides and hydrocarbons of other cars of comparable size equipped with modern standard exhaust treatment systems. Compared with an average D-segment cars on the market, driving a Prius can save up to one tonne of CO2 emissions per year (calculation based on the combined EC cycle, with annual driving distance). The official fuel consumption on the EC combined cycle is 4.3 l/100km. And, when it does eventually reach the end of its useful life, owners can be confident that Prius is 90% recyclable.</span></p>

<p><span>World-leading aerodynamics play a significant role in helping improve fuel consumption, reduce wind noise and allow increased performance. The reduced frontal area of Prius means it cuts through the air more efficiently and the car&rsquo;s smooth underbody reduces overall drag and resistance.</span></p>

<p><span>The Prius features a class leading aerodynamic drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.26 resulting in excellent high speed stability and quietness.</span></p>

<p><span>The Prius can furthermore run on electric motor only at a low speed and up to two kilometres distance, offering a completely silent driving experience.</span></p>

<p><span>Suspension and chassis refinements as recent as 2006 have been designed to improve driving pleasure still further while also enhancing ride comfort and high speed stability. The developments have focused on specific areas of chassis stiffness to improve dynamic stability, suspension tuning for better ride comfort and steering control for increased response and feel.</span></p>

<p>The Toyota Prius is now clearly established as the world&rsquo;s best selling hybrid car and it has been a sales success since its launch in Japan in 1997. Approximately 450,000 cars have been sold worldwide since that date and production capacity has recently been expanded further to cope with worldwide demand. Moreover, in order to satisfy demand in China, the production of Prius in this country has started at the end of last year, in Changchun City.</p>

<p>The newly improved Toyota Prius will be instantly recognisable by the fresh exterior design which creates a more refined appearance.</p>

<p>The front grille has been redesigned, featuring now a chrome insert, and a new front spoiler both improves the aerodynamics at high speed and helps create a more distinctive look.</p>

<p>The headlamps have been subtly restyled to create a more flowing look. Smoked clear coating has been applied to the headlamp extension while an inner lens has been added below the turn indicator lamp.</p>

<p>At the rear, chrome-plate mouldings have been utilised in the lamp structure and a white background to the stop lamp replaces the current black to add to the appeal.</p>

<p>This latest Prius will be available with a choice of eight exterior body colours with four new tones added (Ultra Silver, Barcelona Red, Opal Green and Ash Grey).</p>

<h2><strong>Qualitative improvements inside</strong></h2>

<p>Throughout the interior of the newly improved Toyota Prius there have been significant enhancements to trim and finish to create a more refined environment.</p>

<p><em>The main surfaces of the instrument panel reveal a new, softer texture and a darker colour. This finish is extended to the upper door trims, front and rear. The seats&rsquo; fabric colour is new and its stitching patterns have been simplified.</em></p>

<p>For the ultimate comfort, genuine leather seats and a leather trimmed steering wheel become available. As an integrated part of the package, the centre console box is also leather (synthetic) trimmed.</p>

<p>Rear seat passengers will find additional comfort in the improved Prius. The seat width and main portion of the seat back have been increased in width by 50 mm and a redesigned rear seat cushion has lowered the hip-point by 6 mm.</p>

<p>These design changes will increase hip space for rear seat passengers while also increasing headroom.</p>

<h2><strong>Sharper driving dynamics</strong></h2>

<p>In comparison with the model introduced in 2004, the newly improved Prius benefits from modifications focused on specific areas like chassis stiffness, to improve stability, suspension tuning to improve ride comfort and steering control to enhance response and feel. There have also been some aerodynamic changes to increase high-speed stability.</p>

<p>Chassis stiffness has been increased by the addition of reinforcement plates, notably around the rear cross member mounting, and by modifying parts such as the rear side and cross members.</p>

<p>In the rear suspension, the toe-correction bushings have been retuned for better compliance and the shock absorbers changed to give better ride comfort.</p>

<p>The electric power steering ECU settings have been modified in order to provide better steering feel and a number of changes made to stiffen the steering mounts to create more precise reaction. These changes include fitting stiffer alloy wheels which will react more precisely to directional changes.</p>

<p>The underbody aerodynamics have been improved by the fitment of a different engine undercover, the new front lip spoiler and new rear tyre spats to aid airflow around the rear wheels and tyres.</p>

<p>As one of the most sophisticated passenger cars available today, the Toyota Prius is also a showcase for advanced technologies. This newly improved version offers new state-of-the-art features, which not only demonstrate this principle but also enhance the driving experience.</p>

<p>The highlight is the Intelligent Park Assist (IPA) system, another world-first available in Prius &ndash; is unique and simple to operate, allowing the driver to select the target parking spot and then control the speed, while the car steers itself.</p>

<p>The system is designed to assist the driver in both parallel and &lsquo;rear-on&rsquo; parking situations and is activated by the IPA button on the dashboard. The driver then selects the target parking spot on the touch-sensitive viewing screen and the IPA sets the vehicle in motion, selecting the correct steering angle for each step of the process. The driver retains control of the speed of the vehicle through the brake pedal, deciding when to stop.</p>

<p>IPA is a simple system which takes signals from the electric power steering, yaw rate, acceleration and wheel angle sensors, the skid control ECU and the hybrid system&rsquo;s ECU.</p>

<p><em>If the driver prefers not to use IPA, there is also the more conventional Toyota Park Assist system which relies on a new, more compact rear camera to show images in the viewing screen. Superimposed on these images are colour-coded guidelines which show the predicted path of the Prius as it is reversed into the available space.</em></p>

<p>Also available with the newly improved Prius is the most sophisticated DVD-based satellite navigation system in the segment.</p>

<p>The navigation system is voice activated in three languages (English, French and German) for functions including phone control, audio, navigation and air conditioning. Route guidance is provided in 10 languages including, for the first time, Norwegian and Portuguese.</p>

<p>Improved map graphics now feature three-dimensional icons for points of interest and major landmarks.</p>

<p>For the first time in Prius, this system features RDS-TMC (Radio Data System &ndash; Traffic Message Channel) for countries with the appropriate infrastructure. This is a dynamic, real time route guidance feature that monitors traffic congestion on route and suggests alternatives if bad traffic conditions build up.</p>

<p>Furthermore, the new navigation system features a completely new ECU, delivering 65% faster calculation speed.</p>

<p>The newly improved Prius is fitted with a totally new audio head unit with a digital filter on the radio tuner to improve reception and the capability to play CDs with MP3 and WMA files.</p>

<p>Its DSP amplifier features Live Acoustic System, which utilises digital acoustic effects to improve sound quality. These include TruBass (which extends bass sounds in the frequency range between 100 Hz and 200 Hz to produce an effect similar to a sub-woofer) and Focus (which emphasises sound around the 8 kHz frequency and makes passengers think the sound is coming from the front of the car, rather than speakers in the doors).</p>

<p>There is an auxiliary socket in the centre console for connecting portable devices, such as an iPod or other MP3 player, to the audio system.</p>

<p>The audio unit also features Automatic Sound Leveliser, which adjusts volume and equaliser settings, to compensate for an increase in cabin noise due to speed.</p>

<p>Toyota is using the Geneva Motor Show to showcase its concept for a compact, rugged mini SUV that could bring a fresh approach to the segment.</p>

<p>The Urban Cruiser draws heavily on Toyota&rsquo;s heritage in Sports Utility Vehicles through the legendary Land Cruiser range, the best-selling RAV4 and the tough Hilux. It has styling cues typical of Toyota SUVs but also adds its own dynamic flair to bring a more rugged originality to the mini SUV segment.</p>

<p>The Urban Cruiser is a product of ED2, Toyota&rsquo;s European styling studio in the south of France and is the work of chief designer Elvio d&rsquo;Aprile. He worked with Porsche and Pininfarina before joining Toyota in Japan in 1994 and then moved to ED2 when it opened in 2000. Elvio was also the chief designer of the Corolla Verso, a vehicle frequently praised by its dynamic and robust design.</p>

The Urban Cruiser concept is the car that will allow them to freely express their personality.&rdquo;</em></p>

<p><em>&ldquo;The Urban Cruiser breaks with conventionality by bringing something different to the mini SUV segment. It is more dynamic, but also rugged and brings the special Toyota SUV flair.&rdquo;</em></p>

<p>The Urban Cruiser is the latest Toyota to be created under the Vibrant Clarity design philosophy which now underpins all the latest Toyota creations. By working to the Vibrant Clarity discipline, Toyota aims to bring the two elements of successful design, form and function, together under one package.</p>

<p>Therefore, Vibrant Clarity combines two elements: Vibrant form, which stands for dynamism and energy, plus Clarity of function which calls for more rational values such as simplicity and logic.</p>

<h2><strong>Fresh, robust exterior</strong></h2>

<p>The Urban Cruiser concept clearly demonstrates design similarities with other models in the Toyota range and draws on the company&rsquo;s long established heritage in SUVs. It shows the quality inherent in all Toyota design while adding the fresh and robust look that this segment demands.</p>

<p>The Toyota SUV heritage is most evident in the extensive use of a trapezoidal design element that is now in the front bumper, the grille and lower door panels. This creates a dynamic feeling but also suggests protection.</p>

<p>Furthermore, the trapezoidal form can also be found on the side window, evoking a Toyota design cue reminiscent of several other models, like AYGO, Corolla Hatchback, Corolla Verso, the new RAV4 and others.</p>

<p>The massive wheel arches are also intended to emphasise the SUV character. They converge towards the car&rsquo;s geometric centre in order to provide a compact and agile shape while disguising the relatively long wheelbase &ndash; itself designed to create maximum interior space.</p>

<p>You can see all the elements of the Vibrant Clarity design philosophy in Urban Cruiser. These are defined within the four principles of P.A.S.S. (Proportion, Architecture, Surface, Special touch).</p>

<p><em><strong>&bull; Proportion:</strong> the long cabin &ndash; offering excellent interior space &ndash; combines with short, powerful overhangs to create an effect of perfect imbalance. This results in a massive, but dynamic body proportion.<strong>&bull; Architecture:</strong> when viewed from above, there is a pronounced V-shape to the front &ndash; created by the dominant front and rear wheel arches which stand out from the bodyshell.<strong>&bull; Surface:</strong> the extensive use of trapezoidal design is distinctive in the front bumper shape and the freeform surface of the lower door panels.<strong>&bull; Special touch:</strong> The crispness of the overall exterior design is completed by sharply sliced surfaces that can be found in the front and rear bumpers.</em></p>

<p>In addition to these distinguishing elements, the Urban Cruiser makes a significant break from the conventional with the use of satin finish exterior body paint rather than the common gloss.</p>

<h2><strong>Fashion-led interior</strong></h2>

<p>Just as the exterior design of Urban Cruiser breaks from the conventional, the interior adopts a new approach too. Here the designer wanted to move away from the traditional car interior design and focus on examples outside the car industry, such as modern furniture.</p>

<p>It is the work of Yi Yeong Jae, the Korean designer who also created the Toyota Motor Triathlon Race Car, shown one year ago, at this same motor show.</p>

<p><em>&ldquo;I was inspired by the designs of modern, fashionable furniture,&rdquo; says Yi Yeong Jae. &ldquo;The interior design consists of several different surfaces which are treated as different, independent layers.</em> <em>This is the case with the seats, the door panels and the dashboard.&rdquo;</em></p>

<p>There is a feeling of spaciousness inside Urban Cruiser which is in keeping with its roomy but compact concept. The seats adopt a thin, elegant design that is both space saving and comfortable. The materials are modern with a premium quality and show some of the characteristics of nylon.</p>

<p>Special features of the interior design include the door handles &ndash; created to facilitate use &ndash; and the navigation screen which is viewed through a transparent curved panel integrated into the centre console.</p>

The Fine-T was developed based on this vision. In addition to an advanced fuel cell system that assures excellent environmental performance, the Fine-T offers unprecedented maneuverability by utilizing a four-wheel independent, large-angle steering system with an in-wheel electric motor in each wheel, while creating an environment that extends hospitality to all aboard. Toyota&rsquo;s FCHVs have now attained another stage in their ongoing evolution.</em></p>

This is expressed in a compact, new &ldquo;one-form silhouette&rdquo; design that changes its appearance depending on the viewing angle. To achieve this revolutionary, highly efficient package, the compact fuel-cell unit has been installed under the floor and there is in-wheel motor drive for all four wheels. This gives the Fine-T the cabin space of an Avensis within the approximate exterior dimensions of a Yaris. The vehicle is designed for the next-generation active family user who appreciates high-tech as part of a smart lifestyle.</em></p>

<p><em>The interior seeks to create a sense of spaciousness and envelopment at the same time, based on the key idea of making high-tech warm and friendly to people. This is reflected in the driver&rsquo;s seat area, too, which features a low instrument panel incorporating a large multi-information display, assuring a good, broad view. To further enhance the calm and relaxed atmosphere of the interior, we employed variable lighting intensity to produce a calming effect over the instrument panel and door trim. The Fine-T demonstrates the awesome space-efficiency and hospitality that are possible in an FCHV.</em></p>

<p>The Fine-T extends warm hospitality to users by alleviating the effort of getting in and out. As the gull-wing doors open, the driver&rsquo;s seat rotates outward to assist in boarding.</p>

<p>Once the user is seated, the seat glides back automatically to the driving position. When ready to leave the vehicle, pressing a button sets the seat to the exiting position, and the user can simply stand up to get out. The drive-by-wire steering system stows away automatically when preparing to exit the vehicle.</p>

<h2><strong>Advanced fuel cell hybrid system</strong></h2>

<p><em>Toyota&rsquo;s state-of-the-art fuel cell hybrid system demonstrates how close we can come to having zero effect on the environment. Hydrogen supplied from Toyota-built, 70 MPa (approx. 700 atmospheres) storage tanks reacts chemically with oxygen (from the air) to produce electricity in the company&rsquo;s proprietary fuel cell stack (the Toyota FC Stack), which, like the vehicle&rsquo;s storage battery (when needed), drives the electric motors that power the vehicle. A power control unit efficiently manages the power sources (the fuel cell stack and storage battery).</em></p>

<p>To fit its compact dimensions, the Fine-T employs a downsized, higher-performance new Toyota FC Stack configuration. This fuel cell stack adopts a new alloy catalyst, which allows a dramatic reduction in the amount of precious metals used. These units are mounted beneath the vehicle floor, thereby creating more cabin space, while yielding a radically low center-of-gravity and low inertia moment, which contribute to an exhilarating driving experience and help enable large steering angles.</p>

<p>The Fine-T enhances the fun of mobility while offering a major advance in handling convenience when driving on narrow roads and during parking. Supporting this maneuverability are an independent four-wheel large-angle steering system and independent four-wheel drive using in-wheel motors with integrated drive power and wheel turning-angle control.</p>

<p><em>These drive systems contribute to a distinctively low center of gravity and low moment of inertia, yielding an extremely stable feel, achieving an excellent balance of driving pleasure and stability. The result is exhilarating driving performance that exceeds expectations for a passenger car.</em></p>

<p><em>In addition, a drive-by-wire system connects the driver&rsquo;s controls to actuators that operate vehicle functions, providing an unprecedented degree of freedom in vehicle navigation. In front-axle/rear-axle turning mode, the vehicle can be turned around from the front or rear. This maneuvering capability is particularly handy for parallel parking, both when entering and exiting inline parking spots. In directional change mode, continuously variable steering of the front and rear wheels allows a change of direction of almost the entire length of the vehicle in four directions. This enables U-turns on dead-end streets and when coming out of inline parking spots. On-the-spot turning mode, as the name suggests, allows 360-degree turning on the vertical axis.</em></p>

<p>The Fine-T employs peripheral monitoring video cameras and a large display to support freedom of vehicle movement and reinforce active safety functions. A front-view camera is installed above the license plate and a rear-view camera below the Toyota badge at the back of the vehicle. Side cameras are located at the door handle position on the left and right doors. Combined, these video cameras monitor the entire periphery of the vehicle for obstacles. A large display on the instrument panel shows views of both sides of the vehicle. The central area of the display contains an obstacle recognition screen.</p>

<p>The display helps extend visibility to areas around the vehicle the driver cannot normally see.</p>

<h2><strong>Adopting &ldquo;carbon-neutral&rdquo; materials</strong></h2>

<p>With the aim of controlling the increase of atmospheric CO2 (the cause of global warming), the Fine-T&rsquo;s interior employs a substantial volume of plant-sourced materials.</p>

<p>Plants are considered &ldquo;carbon-neutral&rdquo; because they absorb CO2 in photosynthesis, so even if they are burned, the net amount of CO2 stays the same over the entire life cycle.</p>

<p>With the Fine-T, Toyota pursued the possibilities of using carbon-neutral materials over a wide range of interior fittings, processing polylactic acid (PLA*), obtained from sugar cane, as well as Kenaf and other plant fiber into a variety of textures for door trim, suede-like ceiling material, seat nets and floor mats.</p>

<p>While striving for technological advances and innovations, Toyota seeks to expand dreams of mobility and future possibilities based on research into people&rsquo;s changing lifestyles and values.</p>

<p>The &ldquo;p.o.d&rdquo;, exhibited in 2001, was a vehicle that could express emotional states, almost like a family member or friend.</p>

<p>This demonstrated how, thanks to state-of-the-art information technology, personal mobility vehicles could take on human-like emotional and learning behaviors. Following the &ldquo;PM&rdquo; of 2003, the &ldquo;i-unit&rdquo; Toyota exhibited at EXPO 2005 AICHI (Exposition of Global Harmony) was a personal mobility vehicle that used the smallest amount of energy required to transport one person. It also offered freedom of movement for the individual, and greater possibilities for humankind, thereby making it truly environmentally compatible.</p>

<p><em>Our latest in this series of personal mobility vehicles is the i-swing. With its small, flexible body, the i-swing fits right into a person&rsquo;s living space. The i-swing also exhibits human-like freedom of movement and can be customized almost like choosing an outfit. Through two-way communication employing a range of advanced devices, this new form of mobility allows more individual expression and deeper social interaction, going far beyond the capabilities of conventional vehicles.</em></p>

<p>Employing technology cultivated in robotics research and development, the i-swing goes beyond our view of the car as a means of transport to open up a whole range of possibilities for self-expression. Never before has the vehicle evolved so close to the individual.</p>

<p><em>Through personal mobility, the i-swing will enhance the enjoyment of individual interactions in our everyday lives. No longer is the future far away - it&rsquo;s already here.</em></p>

<h2><strong>Exterior design</strong></h2>

<p>The vehicle body &mdash; which feels more like you are wearing it than riding in it &mdash; is styled less as a &ldquo;car&rdquo; than as a new living form. When seated in the &ldquo;minimum-size open-face body&rdquo; of the i-swing, eye-level is about the same as when standing, allowing unhindered conversation with people met along the way. The body is constructed of shock-absorbing, low-rebound polyurethane and the exterior surface is partly covered with fabric as a measure against making people feel oppressed in crowded situations.</p>

<p><em>The fabric on the i-swing&rsquo;s exterior surface can be detached and changed. This allows for customization of the vehicle according to, say, the seasons of the year. In addition, the frontal door, which opens and closes in sections, and triangular back panel have an embedded full color LED display matrix. The user can personalize the display by installing self-crafted video and still picture images or those downloaded from the Internet. Like wearing a favorite outfit, this enables coordination to suit the user&rsquo;s mood or to match the time, place and occasion.</em></p>

<h2><strong>Driving dynamics</strong></h2>

<p><em>The i-swing offers two driving modes: two-wheel and three-wheel. The two-wheel mode allows for confident and safe driving while moving among people in the city. The three-wheel mode provides highly maneuverable performance on the same roads as regular traffic. Vehicle control changes according to the mode, assuring high levels of both ride comfort and dynamic performance.</em></p>

<p>The three-wheeler runs on two rear-drive wheels and one steerable front wheel, with the left and right rear wheels moving up and down independently. During acceleration and deceleration, the entire vehicle body tilts forward and backward shifting the center of gravity.</p>

<p>When turning left and right, the vehicle body tilts inwards so that the pressure on the driver is always applied downward along the body axis.</p>

<p>Although a high center of gravity and extremely short tread and wheelbase would normally make stable movement difficult in a machine like the I-swing, the position of the center of gravity and the balance of weight on each wheel, as well as motive power, are controlled automatically, much like the movement of a human body when running, turning and stopping.</p>

<p>The result is excellent dynamic performance and a natural ride feel.</p>

<p>During three-wheel driving, the i-swing operating system offers two modes to match the driver&rsquo;s operational skill and purpose.</p>

<p><em>In &ldquo;Comfort Mode&rdquo;, two linked joysticks alone are used. Vehicle attitude (center-of-gravity position) and front-wheel steering, as well as rear wheel left/right drive power, are optimally controlled simply by pushing a joystick in the intended direction of travel. This makes driving easy and pleasant for anyone. Lifting the joystick diagonally forward switches the i-swing to &ldquo;Active Mode&rdquo;. At the same time, the driver assumes a forward-inclined attitude to facilitate agile movements. The joystick sensitivity increases and at the same time, foot pedals can control the vehicle attitude. The driver keeps assuming the optimal posture for the next movement, skilfully accelerating, braking and turning in a series of driving actions that feels much like skiing.</em></p>

<p>With suitable training, drivers can even put in a performance that resembles dancing.</p>

<p><em>With the front wheel stowed away between the two rear wheels, the i-swing goes into two-wheel driving mode, using a gyrosensor for inverted control. One can switch to this driving mode when the i-swing is standing still or moving at low speed. As in three-wheel driving mode, operating the joystick moves the I-swing forward/backward as the center of gravity shifts forward and backward under optimal control, while turning is accomplished by rotational speed difference between the left and right wheels.</em></p>

<p><em>The driver&rsquo;s head is located centrally with respect to the vehicle axle. So when turning on the spot, the movement feels natural, just like turning your own body around. When stationary, the controller maintains the center of gravity above the center of the vehicle axle, so even if the driver significantly shifts position, the vehicle remains more or less stationary as long as there is no joystick operation. The driver&rsquo;s posture also remains constant, even when the vehicle is traveling up and down gradients.</em></p>

<p>When two i-swings are brought together, they can travel side by side with one i-swing becoming the master vehicle. Joystick inputs on the master vehicle are transmitted through short-range communications to the second vehicle, which mimics the master&rsquo;s movements. Since the two vehicles travel by operating the master vehicle alone, the driver of the second vehicle enjoys the same relationship to the actual driver as someone in the passenger seat of a conventional car.</p>

<h2><strong>Artificial Intelligence communication</strong></h2>

<p>The i-swing uses A.I. (artificial intelligence) technology to communicate with the driver. This takes the form of a virtual character, which appears in pop-up displays at left and right shoulder level, and changes depending on the driver&rsquo;s personality. Even after leaving the vehicle, driver and vehicle remain linked by mobile phone or personal computer.</p>

<p>A.I. allows the vehicle to learn the driver&rsquo;s behavior patterns, and to select pertinent information based on this learning, either from memory or the Internet, for communication with the driver at a particular time and place.</p>

<p>Thanks to A.I., the i-swing has the potential to make our lives in the real world more enjoyable and fulfilling.</p>

<p>&nbsp; <strong>The third-generation Toyota RAV4</strong></p>

<h2><strong>Redefining the standard in compact SUVs</strong></h2>

<p>The all-new Toyota RAV4 is setting fresh benchmarks in the compact Sports Utility Vehicle segment with the introduction of premium levels of driving performance, quality, passenger comfort and equipment.</p>

<p><em>The new RAV4 is the third generation of a model that is a best seller in Europe and a worldwide success for Toyota. At launch, in 1994, the Toyota RAV4 established the popularity of compact sports utility vehicles and more than 2 million RAV4s have been sold since then. More than 655,000 RAV4s have been sold in Europe alone (by end-year &rsquo;05).</em></p>

<p>The RAV4 has been completely redesigned for 2006, taking into account modern customer expectations. Its primary role will be to confirm Toyota as the leading carmaker in the SUV-compact segment.</p>

<h2><strong>Designed for modern life</strong></h2>

<p><em>Each generation of RAV4 has followed the same ground-breaking design cues that created the compact SUV market &ndash; combining versatility, design and outstanding driving dynamics. The all-new third generation Toyota RAV4 continues this pioneering spirit but, in response to modern customer demands, adds significantly more premium quality, increased interior space and an intelligent, flexible interior package.</em></p>

<p>The new Toyota RAV4 is 145 mm longer (4,395mm &ndash; 4315mm without backdoor spare wheel) than the current generation, with a significantly increased wheelbase (+70 mm) and rear overhang. This allows greatly improved passenger comfort; the cabin length (1,820mm) has been increased by 85mm with the couple distance between front and rear seats increased by 55 mm.</p>

<p>The width is also increased (by 80mm) and increased shoulder space allows the front seats to be set further apart, again improving comfort. Height remains below that of many competitors, emphasising the sleek, squat styling and premium passenger car driving performance of the RAV4. But the rear seat headroom has been improved, allowing the new RAV4 to seat five adults in comfort.</p>

<p>And, despite the lengthened wheelbase, a lower turning circle of 5.1 meters has been achieved &ndash; well below many rival vehicles.</p>

<p>The precision of the interior structure underlines the premium quality of the new RAV4. The elimination of any break lines, the tight panel gaps and the matching of surface levels all contribute to the perceived quality of the vehicle and are a tribute to its engineering excellence.</p>

<p>The interior volume has been increased to 3,822 litres, an increase of 13% on the outgoing model. This is most noticeable in the luggage compartment, the rear passenger headroom and the shoulder room.</p>

<p>The newly developed rear suspension with the shock absorbers positioned diagonally under the floor results in a 230mm increase in the luggage room width.</p>

<p><em>Customers for the Toyota RAV4 enjoy an active lifestyle, often needing to adapt their vehicle to the demands of a growing family. Here the new RAV4 will offer a unique feature that most clearly expresses its practicality and modularity: the Toyota Easy Flat seating system.</em></p>

<p>Using one of two one-touch levers, easily accessible from the rear tailgate, the rear seats can be folded down into the rear floor space to leave an &lsquo;easy-flat&lsquo; luggage space without the need to remove any seat cushions or headrests.</p>

<p>The rear seats can also split (60:40) for maximum flexibility and can recline on an individual basis. They can slide backwards and forwards over 165mm to greatly enhance passenger comfort or increase luggage capacity. The flat boot floor also offers additional, underfloor storage space for increased security &ndash; and the rear luggage cover can be stowed here when not in use.</p>

<p>The three, hi-tech analogue Optitron meters dominate the instrument panel and give a premium, sporty image. The multi-information display offers a wide range of customisable function setting options including six languages1 and metric or imperial units.</p>

<p>Standard equipment on all models includes air-conditioning (manual or dual automatic on high grade) and a six-speaker radio/CD unit (with 6 CD-changer on high grade) which has been adapted for MP3 file playback.</p>

<p>A dual-zone, fully automatic climate control system, with adjustable pollen removal, is available; while many owners will want to upgrade to the full map DVD navigation system with Bluetooth compatibility and touch screen.</p>

<p>The all-new RAV4 offers a choice of three engines and two drive-trains &ndash; allowing customers to balance outright performance with excellent fuel consumption and low emissions.</p>

<p>Headlining this engine line-up is the remarkable D-4D 180 engine which is the most powerful diesel in the compact SUV sector. Available in the premium RAV4 X, it enables customers to enjoy a top speed of 200km/h and acceleration to 100 km/h in 9.3 seconds while achieving combined fuel consumption of 7.0 litres/100km.</p>

<p>The D-4D 180 is not only powerful, but clean - thanks to Toyota&rsquo;s advanced and unique Toyota D-CAT (Diesel Clean Advanced Technology), an emissions control technology which reduces NOx and particulate emissions at the same time.</p>

<p>Equally impressive are the other two engines available across the RAV4 range: the D-4D 135 diesel and the latest development of the 2.0 VVT-i petrol.</p>

<p><em>Like the D-4D 180, the D-4D 135 uses 32-bit processor technology for accurate and optimum control of main engine functions, leading to enhanced engine efficiency. With maximum power output of 100kW (136 DIN hp) this engine allows the new RAV4 to reach a top speed of 180 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.5 seconds.</em></p>

<p>Maximum torque of 310 Nm over the engine range of 2,000 rpm to 2,800 rpm gives excellent mid-gear acceleration and flexible driving performance while preserving remarkable fuel economy. The Toyota RAV4 D-4D 135 combined fuel consumption is 6.6 litres/100km.</p>

<p>The new Toyota RAV4 with 2.2-litre D-4D engines will come as standard with the latest Toyota six-speed manual transmission which boasts smooth, quick and precise gear-change.</p>

<p>For customers who prefer the smooth power delivery of a petrol engine, the new RAV4 is available with the latest development of the 2.0-litre VVT-i. In the new RAV4, the engine develops 112 kW (152 DIN hp) at 6,000 rpm and has maximum torque available of 194 Nm at 4,000rpm.</p>

<p>Equipped with this engine, the RAV4 (with five speed manual transmission) is capable of a maximum speed of 185 km/h and will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.6 seconds. Fuel consumption is 8.6 litres/100km.</p>

<p>The new RAV4 2.0-litre VVT-i is available with the option of an advanced four-speed automatic gearbox.</p>

<p>The Integrated Active Drive System is unique to the new Toyota RAV4 and another world first for this segment. It takes a set of individual technologies and combines them into a complete package via high-speed CAN communications.</p>

<p>The three elements of Integrated Active Drive System are the Active Torque Control 4WD system, the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and the Electric Power Steering (EPS). The interaction of all these systems allows for real-time control that responds to driver operation and vehicle behaviour resulting in enhanced running, turning and stopping performance.</p>

<p><em>The elements of Integrated Active Drive come together to provide remarkable stability and vehicle control under all conditions. These could include:</em></p>

<p>&bull; adjustment of the engine output to reduce wheel spin&bull; braking of individual wheels to reduce wheel spin&bull; steering torque assist to help driver input correct steering angle&bull; torque transfer between front and rear wheels to improve stability</p>

<p>The new Toyota RAV4 sets out to deliver excellent driving pleasure &ndash; not just through its active performance but also through its chassis and suspension design.</p>

<p>A key factor in this driving pleasure is the all-new front and rear suspension, designed to optimise handling and enhance stability while, at the same time, offering excellent standards of passenger comfort and ride.</p>

<p><em>The front suspension utilises an enhanced McPherson strut design that has been engineered for significant weight reduction and improved passenger comfort. This has resulted in a complete redesign from the lower arm to the coils springs and shock absorbers.</em></p>

<p><em>The rear suspension is unique to RAV4 and utilises a newly-developed independent double wishbone and trailing arm. This gives excellent vehicle stability in straight line with roll-stiffness optimised for good performance under cornering.</em></p>

<p>The new RAV4 uses a high response, mechanical rack and pinion with a newly-developed electric power steering (EPS) system resulting in easy but precise steering effort and excellent steering response.</p>

<p>Specific measures include the development of a new impact-absorbing chassis with minimal cabin deformation in the event of an accident and a comprehensive SRS airbag package including, for the first time in this segment, driver&rsquo;s knee airbag.</p>

<p><em>There has also been a particular emphasis on management of pedestrian safety to minimise injuries in the event of a collision with a pedestrian. The bonnet itself has been redesigned to be a deformable structure and the area around the bonnet lock features crash-absorbing reinforcements and a crumple zone. The lock itself has been moved further back, away from the likely area of pedestrian impact. Energy absorbing zones have been incorporated into the front section of the new RAV4 and, at the rear edge of the bonnet, the cowl has an open cross-section structure that allows its underside to crumple.</em></p>

<p>The RAV4 X will be instantly recognisable thanks to its unique and striking exterior styling to create a premium look.
