It is a vehicle that delivers an unmatched combination of power and environmental efficiency in its class.</span></p><p><span>Its introduction strengthens and extends the appeal of the RAV4, the model which created the market for recreational SUVs and which has amassed more than 10 million worldwide sales.</span></p><p><span>Toyota has applied its leading hybrid technology expertise to create the RAV4 Plug-in, producing a vehicle that is not only powerful, but which also outperforms all its rivals in terms of low emissions and fuel economy. The model’s final homologation data indicates 22 g/m CO<sub>2</sub> and 1.0 l/100km (Combined WLTP cycle).</span></p><p><span>RAV4 operates as an authentic electric vehicle: EV running is its default mode, in which it can cover around up to 98 km in urban driving (City WLTP cycle) on a full battery charge, comfortably more than the average European daily commute, and reach speeds of 135 km/h, with no intervention from the hybrid powertrain.</span></p><p><span>When extra engine power is needed, the capability of the 2.5-litre Dynamic Force powerplant ensures efficiency remains class-leading. Battery charging is simple and safe, and can be accomplished in 2.5 hours using a 230 V/32 A connection. As standard, owners can use the MyT app to schedule and monitor battery charging remotely and also operate the air conditioning system to warm up or cool the cabin before setting off.</span></p><p><span>Beyond its sophisticated and effective powertrain technology, the RAV4 Plug-in retains all the qualities that have made the fifth generation RAV4 so successful since its launch in late 2018. This includes the dynamic benefits of the low centre of gravity and high body rigidity inherent in the Toyota GA-K vehicle platform. It also comes as standard with AWD-i intelligent all-wheel drive.</span></p><p><span>The RAV4 Plug-in is a complementary model to the RAV4 Hybrid, consolidating Toyota’s electrification programme.</span></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><span>1. PERFORMANCE AND TECHNOLOGY</span></p><p><span>With the new RAV4 Plug-in, Toyota has created a vehicle with a dual DNA: one that has strong and genuine EV capabilities but which can also operate with highly efficient hybrid electric power.</span></p><p><span>Toyota has drawn on its experience of engineering two generations of the Prius Plug-in and has adopted an incremental approach to add extra performance to the efficiency of the plug-in technology. This has produced what is the most powerful model in the RAV4 range and one which delivers best-in-class performance in its segment in terms of EV driving range, CO<sub>2</sub> emissions and fuel efficiency.</span></p><p><span>For the Prius Plug-in, the focus was on extending the EV driving range by using a larger high-voltage battery with the established 53 kW electric motor from the hybrid model. By contrast, RAV4 uses a more powerful motor together with a larger battery and inverter to gain significantly more drive power as well as the ability to cover much greater distances and travel at high speeds in EV mode.</span></p><p><span>Maximum output for the full powertrain, including the 2.5-litre Dynamic Force hybrid engine, is 306 DIN hp/225 kW – 38% more than the RAV4 Hybrid – enabling 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.0 seconds – 2.1 seconds faster than the hybrid. Drivability is improved, for example with 50% more power available at 60 km/h.</span></p><p><span>In EV mode, performance is comparable to a 2.0-litre petrol model, with 0-100 km/h acceleration in 10 seconds.</span></p><p><span><strong>2.5-litre Dynamic Force engine</strong></span></p><p><span>The RAV4 Plug-in’s hybrid engine is a higher output version of the 2.5-litre Dynamic Force unit featured in the hybrid model, benefiting from the higher electric power to return more power and an improved torque curve.</span></p><p><span>The 2,487 cm<sup>3</sup>, four-cylinder, 16-valve DOHC Atkinson cycle powerplant features Dual VVT-i intelligent intake (electrically controlled) and exhaust valve timing and D-4S direct/indirect fuel injection with multi-hole injectors. The long, 103.4 mm stroke and the high 14.0:1 compression ratio help gain higher output and fuel efficiency. Maximum power of 185 DIN hp/136 kW is delivered at 6,000 rpm compared to RAV4 Hybrid’s 178 DIN hp/131 kW at 5,700 rpm.</span></p><p><span>The hybrid system operates an automatic warm-up phase to help protect the petrol engine against excessive wear that might occur if it is called on to make regular cold starts when the vehicle is running at motorway speeds. Power is limited, then progressively increased. The driver is alerted to the warm-up status by the engine icon showing blue in the hybrid energy flow display.</span></p><p><span><strong>New hybrid system</strong></span></p><p><span>The new hybrid system delivers a class-leading combination of power and efficiency. With maximum output of 306 DIN hp/225 kW, the RAV4 Plug-in is the most powerful model in the RAV4 range and Toyota’s most powerful hybrid. At the same time, its efficiency is remarkable, with significant improvements on the levels achieved by the RAV4 Hybrid.</span></p><p><span>It is also unique in its class in offering an authentic EV drive. In fact, EV mode is the default: the hybrid engine will not intervene, giving the driver the freedom to cover around 75 km (WLTP cycle) and achieve speeds of up to 135 km/h – suitable for highway driving – with zero fuel consumption and zero tailpipe emissions. And under City WLTP cycle driving, the EV range can reach 98 km.</span></p><p><span>Depending of the battery state of charge (SOC), the vehicle will automatically switch to highly efficient hybrid operation. This is a key benefit derived from basing the plug-in system on Toyota’s highly efficient hybrid technology.</span></p><p><span><strong>Hybrid system upgrades</strong></span></p><p><span>Toyota has developed a more powerful hybrid system for the RAV4 Plug-in, using the compact and lightweight components of the fourth generation hybrid technology featured in the RAV Hybrid, with detailed changes to optimise performance in the context of a plug-in hybrid vehicle.</span></p><p><span>There is a new lithium-ion battery, with energy capacity increased to 18.1 kWh. It contains 96 cells and has a rated voltage of 355.2 V. An increased current allows for more power: maximum output is thus significantly higher than from the unit in the RAV4 Hybrid.</span></p><p><span>The battery is located beneath the vehicle floor, which helps lower the centre of gravity and avoids intrusion in the load space or cabin. The cells are cooled using refrigerant from the vehicle’s air conditioning system, which also helps maintain the car’s EV performance.</span></p><p><span>There is a specific change to the power control unit, too. Adding a boost converter has increased the current so that more power can be drawn from the high-voltage battery. The DC-DC converter has been made smaller, quieter and more efficient, and has better cooling performance. It is positioned beneath the rear sets, taking up less cabin space.</span></p><p><span>The front electric motor produces 134 kW (compared to 88 kW in RAV4 Hybrid); the rear motor’s output is unchanged at 40 kW. With increased support from the electric motor, the hybrid engine is able to run at low revs. This contributes to the RAV4 Plug-in’s superior noise and vibration levels (further details below).</span></p><p><span><strong>Drive modes</strong></span></p><p><span>The RAV4 Plug-in has four different operating modes for its plug-in hybrid system:</span></p><ul><li><span>EV (electric vehicle) mode – the default mode</span></li><li><span>HV (hybrid vehicle) mode</span></li><li><span>Auto HV/EV mode</span></li><li><span>Charging mode</span></li></ul><p><span>It operates by default as an electric vehicle (EV), running in EV priority mode, and will continue to run purely on its electric power, even with hard use of the accelerator pedal. When the limit of EV driving range is reached in EV mode, the vehicle automatically switches to HV mode.</span></p><p><span>The driver has the flexibility of using HV mode to start their journey, switching to EV driving to maximise efficiency when necessary, for example, when entering an urban area.</span></p><p><span>In Auto EV/HV mode, the hybrid system will automatically come into play when extra power is required, for example under sharp, sudden acceleration, EV mode being restored immediately after.</span></p><p><span>Battery charging mode helps restore the level of battery charge when the level is too low for EV operation, drawing power generation by the engine.</span></p><p><span>The sequential shiftmatic system allows the driver to use the paddle shifts on the steering wheel to gain engine braking. Further assistance is provided by Deceleration Assist Control which automatically increase drive motor deceleration torque when downhill braking is detected. This makes for a smoother drive with less use of the brakes.</span></p><p><span><strong>Acceleration performance</strong></span></p><p><span>The power of the plug-in hybrid system delivers a strong feeling of acceleration when driving in HV mode or auto EV/HV mode. The engine’s responsiveness and the higher output from the high-voltage battery give quick performance, with nought to 100 km/h covered in just six seconds.</span></p><p><span>The control system determines whether the driver wants a smooth, linear increase in speed, or immediate, peak response. In Sport mode, the non-linear performance gives a feeling of more immediate response to increase the level of driving pleasure.</span></p><p><span><strong>Noise, vibration and quietness</strong></span></p><p><span>Numerous measures have been taken to reduce noise and vibration levels experienced in the cabin and achieve quiet performance from the plug-in hybrid system.</span></p><p><span>For example, the transaxle is designed so there is less resonance from the gears. The gears themselves have polished tooth surfaces for smoother and quieter operation. A damper system reduces shock and rattle on start-up, as well as fluctuations in torque in constant-speed driving.</span></p><p><span>As explained in the Performance and Technology section above, there is less noise from the hybrid engine as it can run at lower revs compared to the RAV4 Hybrid. Noise and vibration are also suppressed by additional insulation in the wing linings and front pillars and the use of acoustic glass for the windscreen and front side windows.</span></p><p><span><strong>Air conditioning system with heat pump</strong></span></p><p><span>The RAV4 Plug-in’s air conditioning system operates with efficiency while still ensuring cabin comfort, even when the vehicle is in EV mode.</span></p><p><span>It uses a pump that draws thermal energy from the air outside the car to heat the cabin, so running the air conditioning has less impact on the car’s EV driving range.</span></p><p><span>The system’s efficient design includes S-FLOW control which directs heating and ventilation only to seats which are occupied – driver, front passenger and the rear seats. Performance is adjusted according to the temperature selected, the ambient temperature, cabin temperature and the amount of sunlight. Power is also saved with an “off” setting for the dehumidifier, disabling the function when it would have no effect on window misting, odours or cabin comfort.</span></p><p><span>2. DRIVING PLEASURE</span></p><p><span>The RAV4 Plug-in’s dynamic character builds on the essential strengths of its GA-K platform by taking advantage of an even lower centre of gravity.</span></p><p><span>The platform is already notable for the low centre of gravity it secures for the RAV4 Hybrid, but thanks to the lay-out of the powertrain and, in particular, the location of the high-voltage battery beneath the floor, the centre of gravity has been lowered. This strengthens the vehicle’s handling and stability and adds to its fun-to-drive quality.</span></p><p><span>The GA-K platform also adds the benefits of light weight and high body rigidity, underpinning the RAV4’s “confident and natural” drive. It takes uneven surfaces in its stride, communicating stability, and responds naturally to the driver’s inputs.</span></p><p><span>The RAV4 Plug-in uses the same double wishbone rear suspension as the hybrid model, tuned for ride comfort. Because of the low centre of gravity and high body rigidity, the suspension does not have to be made stiffer to achieve the desired dynamic performance.</span></p><p><span><strong>Intelligent electric all-wheel drive</strong></span></p><p><span>All versions of the RAV4 Plug-in are equipped with AWD-i, Toyota’s intelligent electric all-wheel drive system, as featured on the RAV4 Hybrid. Compact and lightweight, AWD-i uses a 40 kW electric motor on the rear axle, giving the car the all-wheel drive performance expected of an SUV, but with superior fuel efficiency compared to a mechanical system. It operates equally when the vehicle is in its default EV mode, or when running in HV mode, with support when required from the hybrid engine.</span></p><p><span>The front/rear torque ratio is automatically optimised according to driving conditions, giving better handling and stability in slippery conditions and off-road driving, keeping the plug-in hybrid faithful to the RAV4’s essential “drive on any road” character.</span></p><p><span><strong>Trail Mode</strong></span></p><p><span>The RAV4 Plug-in reinforces its all-wheel drive performance with Trail Mode, an automatic locking system for the limited-slip differential that the driver can engage using a dashboard control. This ensures the best possible grip on slippery and loose surfaces and can help the driver negotiate more challenging off-road conditions. For example, if one wheel loses contact with the ground, Trail Mode will brake the spinning wheel and direct drive torque to the grounded wheel to gain traction, while also automatically adjusting the throttle response and transmission shift pattern.</span></p><p><span><strong>Drive modes</strong></span></p><p><span>The driver can switch between NORMAL, ECO and SPORT driving modes, adjusting throttle performance to suit their preference, or the driving conditions (SPORT mode adapts both the car’s acceleration and deceleration). This selection can be made in any of the four hybrid modes, as detailed in the Performance and Technology chapter above.</span></p><p><span>3. DESIGN AND PACKAGING</span></p><p><span>Toyota has ensured that the RAV4 Plug-in’s new hybrid system is packaged without compromising comfort, space and utility in both the cabin and the load compartment.</span></p><p><span>The new model shares the same external dimensions as the RAV4 Hybrid and its powertrain is designed so that it does not intrude into the cabin. There is just a small decrease in the load space capacity, with the floor being raised by 35 mm. At 520 litres, the volume remains competitive with other models in the segment.</span></p><p><span>The boot floor is flat and has an additional storage space for the charging cable beneath the deck board. The load surface remains flat when the rear seats (divided 60:40) are folded, and a flush joint with the rear finish plate makes it easy to slide heavy items into place.</span></p><p><span>With no awkward intrusions in the side of the load area, the space is practical for carrying large items. There is room for four golf bags or two 77-litre suitcases. Towing capacity is a maximum 1.5 tonnes with a braked trailer, and there is no reduction in the size of the fuel tank, its 55-litre capacity giving the vehicle an exceptional cruising range.</span></p><p><span><strong>Exterior design</strong></span></p><p><span>Externally, only a few small details distinguish the RAV4 Plug-in from its hybrid sibling, reflecting its “refined sports” character. There is a metal-look finish to the lower front moulding and rear garnish above the licence plate, dark chrome detailing in the headlight units and a dark plating finish for the front grille. The rear skid plate is painted black. The charging point is concealed beneath a flap on the rear right-wing.</span></p><p><span>The RAV4 Plug-in can be fitted with larger, 19-inch wheels and larger tyres. Standard on Style grade, these have a five-double-spoke design with a contrast bright machined and black finish. The Mid grade’s 18-inch rims have a machined/dark grey five-spoke design.</span></p><p><span>The introduction of the plug-in model introduces a new body colour to the RAV4 Range, Emotional Red.</span></p><p><span><strong>Interior design</strong></span></p><p><span>The spacious cabin is fitted with sports seats, upholstered in dark grey cloth with contrast red stitching in the Mid grade model. The Style version has a striking two-tone red and dark grey combination of fabric and synthetic leather as standard, with the option of genuine leather with horizontal red quilting in the seatbacks and a contrast vertical red ribbon detail in the shoulder section.</span></p><p><span>The front seats have integrated heating and power adjustment and lumbar support for the driver’s seat as standard. The rear seats are also heated and the front seat ventilation and power adjustment for the front passenger seat are standard on Style+ grade.</span></p><p><span>In the combimeter in the driver’s instrument display, the water temperature indicator has been replaced with a battery level display. Specific plug-in hybrid vehicle content has also been added to the multi-information display.</span></p><p><span>In other respects, the quality and convenience of the fifth generation RAV4 is preserved, including excellent all-round vision for the driver. The GA-K platform allows for a low hip point on the driver’s seat, contributing the sense of connection with vehicle and an engaging driving experience. A generous range of seat and steering wheel adjustment makes it easy for drivers to find just the right position at the wheel.</span></p><p><span>Access to the rear seats is made easy with wide-opening rear doors and a reduced distance between the hip point and sill. Spacious footwells and air vents add to the comfort.</span></p><p><span><strong>Equipment features</strong></span></p><p><span>The RAV4 Plug-in introduces new equipment features and options that meet the demands of today’s customers for more sophisticated connectivity, comfort and convenience.</span></p><p><span>Notably, a 230 V/150 W power outlet is provided as standard. This can be used to power mobile devices, without having to worry about the impact on battery performance – for example running speakers for a tailgate party. Home electric appliances of 150 W or less can also be connected, for example in an emergency during a domestic power outage. There are also 12V sockets in the cabin and load space and Aux/USB sockets for connecting smartphones and music players.</span></p><p><span>Other standard features include the latest Toyota multimedia system, with smartphone integration using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and illuminated power switches in the door panels. The key fob includes a remote control for the vehicle’s air conditioning system, operated via the MyT app. Full details are given in the Connected Car chapter below.</span></p><p><span>The Style grade version of the RAV4 Plug-in has a nine-inch display audio mounted prominently on the centre console (an option for the Mid grade) and 19-inch alloy wheels. A colour head-up display is available for both model grades.</span></p><p><span><strong>Toyota Safety Sense</strong></span></p><p><span>As standard, the new RAV4 Plug-in benefits from the latest generation Toyota Safety Sense active safety and driver assistance systems. Designed to reduce the risk of some of the most common accidents, they alert the driver to hazards and, if necessary, provide braking and steering support to help avoid an impact, or reduce the severity if a collision is unavoidable.</span></p><p><span>In addition to detecting vehicles on the road ahead, the Pre-Collision System (PCS) can also recognise pedestrians in both day and night-time driving, and cyclists during daylight. The Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) is also more sophisticated in its operation, working with the Road Sign Assist (RSA) to automatically reset vehicle speed in line with changes in the speed limit.</span></p><p><span>The combination of Lane Departure Alert and Lane Tracing Assist helps keep the RAV4 centred in its traffic lane, providing a sound alert or steering wheel vibration if it detects deviation without the turn indicators being used, then applying steering assistance if necessary to help return the vehicle to its correct path. Recognition and control performance have been improved so that assistance is also provided through gentle bends, as well as on straight highway sections. As well as lane markings on the road surface, Lane Departure Alert can also recognise road margins.</span></p><p><span>4. SAFE AND EFFICIENT CHARGING OPTIONS</span></p><p><span>Ease of charging is a key concern for any electric vehicle. Toyota RAV4 Plug-in provides safe and efficient options that allow a full battery recharge in just two-and-a-half hours.</span></p><p><span>The vehicle is equipped with an on-board fast-charger that can support up to 6.6 kW. without compromising the battery’s durability. As standard, it is supplied with a 7.5 m Type 2 Mode 2 cable for connection to 10 A home power supply, which enables a recharge in 7.5 hours.</span></p><p><span>The charging socket on the vehicle is located on the rear right wing with a flap that automatically locks and unlocks with the vehicle doors. The inlet has heat protection and an indicator light to show when charging is in progress and completed.</span></p><p><span>For optimum speed of recharging and safety, Toyota recommends the combination of a Type 2 Mode 3 32 A cable and a wallbox unit. With this compact, integrated set-up, recharging can be accomplished in about 2.5 hours, with no impact on the customer’s domestic power supply.</span></p><p><span>Toyota will also be making a “connected” wallbox system available that can be used by customers with different cars, identified by RFiD card recognition. The unit’s connectivity will also link to services such as billing and charging history, and enable remote software updates, via the MyT app.</span></p><p><span>The design of these Toyota products is future-proofed. They are all 22 kW units that will be able to serve vehicles introduced with more powerful on-board chargers.</span></p><p><span>5. A CONNECTED CAR</span></p><p><span>The RAV4 Plug-in is the first Toyota model to give the driver remote control of vehicle functions, including the air conditioning system, via the MyT customers’ app.</span></p><p><span>Toyota’s research confirms that customers choosing to buy plug-in hybrid electric vehicles expect app-based access to their vehicle, and it has made remote functions for battery management, charging and on-board comfort part of the RAV4 Plug-in’s standard specification.</span></p><p><span><strong>Remote charging control</strong></span></p><p><span>The owner can schedule the charging time for the vehicle, for example setting the start time to take advantage of off-peak energy tariffs.</span></p><p><span>The MyT app also allows them to check the status of the vehicle’s battery, the current driving range and the time remaining for complete charge, information that’s particularly useful when the vehicle is connected to a public charging point. Alerts can be received to warn of a low battery charge level or any problems with the charging process.</span></p><p><span><strong>Comfort control</strong></span></p><p><span>The new system also allows the owner to start the car’s heating or ventilation before they get behind the wheel. A defrost setting can clear screens and warm the car so no time is wasted when leaving the house; likewise, the cabin can be cooled down ready for departure on a hot day.</span></p><p><span>The system will run for up to 20 minutes, so operation can be synchronised with the time the owner wants to begin their journey.</span></p><p><span>These functions are in addition to established MyT app services, such as sending navigation destinations to the vehicle, car-to-door directions for the last part of a journey, find-my-car location; and driving analytics. Building on RAV4’s success as a pioneer of hybrid power among SUVs, Toyota is now ready to extend the benefits of the technology with the introduction of the new RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, a new flagship vehicle for its hybrid line-up that promises to be not only more powerful but also more emissions and fuel-efficient than any other in its class.</p><p>This first plug-in hybrid-electric version of the RAV4 draws on more than 20 years of Toyota leadership in hybrid powertrain technology. It features Toyota’s latest hybrid-electric vehicle technology, with higher power and better driving dynamics, and also has a genuine pure electric EV driving capability, free from concerns about driving range or the need to stop to recharge the battery.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Performance and efficiency</strong></p><p>With the experience of developing two generations of its Prius Plug-in Hybrid model, Toyota is well-equipped to produce an effective new powertrain for the RAV4. With full system output of 306 DIN hp/225 kW*, it has the potential to deliver acceleration from rest to 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds*, outperforming any of its conventionally powered rivals. Moreover, it is also on course to deliver best-in-class CO<sub>2</sub> emissions and fuel economy: Toyota’s pre-homologation, WLTP-standard data indicates CO<sub>2</sub> output of less than 29 g/km*. These levels are unmatched by any current D-segment plug-in hybrid AWD SUV.</p><p>The new RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid is constructed on Toyota’s GA-K platform, with added dynamic benefits achieved by locating the hybrid battery beneath the floor. It is also equipped as standard with the Toyota’s AWD-i intelligent electric all-wheel drive system.</p><p>Toyota has harnessed the boost in performance electric power can deliver to achieve a significant increase in output compared to the standard RAV4 Hybrid. It has developed a new, high-capacity lithium-ion battery and added an enhanced boost converter to the hybrid system’s power control unit. The 2.5-litre Hybrid Dynamic Force petrol engine is based on the unit featured in the regular RAV4 Hybrid, with improvements to meet the performance requirements of the plug-in hybrid system.</p><p>The result is not just rapid off-the-line acceleration: the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid has a greater driving range in electric EV mode, with zero petrol consumption and exhaust emissions.</p><p>With four driving modes available, the driver can switch seamlessly from hybrid to pure EV driving. This new EV mode enables the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid to cover more than 65 km* on electric power alone (battery charge and driving conditions permitting), further than any competitor plug-in hybrid SUV and beyond the 50 km average European daily commuting distance. Moreover, speeds up to 135 km/h can be reached without any intervention of the internal combustion engine, even under full acceleration.</p><p>Intelligent hybrid battery packaging</p><p>The compact dimensions of the lithium-ion battery allow it to be contained entirely beneath the vehicle floor. With minimal intrusion in the load space, cargo capacity is a generous 520 litres. The battery’s location low in the vehicle also helps give the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid a low centre of gravity, enhancing handling stability and ride comfort.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>High-efficiency heat pump air conditioning</strong></p><p>In its scrutiny of every detail that can contribute to the overall efficient performance of the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, Toyota adopted the heat pump air conditioning system it introduced as a world-first in the current, second generation Prius Plug-in Hybrid, adapting it specifically for use in the new SUV with a hot water circuit – the same as that used in the RAV4 Hybrid. In addition, the battery is cooled by the refrigerant of the air conditioning system.</p><p>This system is far more efficient than engine heating or high-powered electric heaters, absorbing heat from the air outside the vehicle to warm the cabin.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Refined Sport design</strong></p><p>Styling details for the exterior and the cabin demonstrate a more Refined Sport look for the mid-size SUV. At the front there is a dark plating for the dedicated grille mesh and frame and headlight extensions, together with a new metallic finish on the lower bumper moulding that emphasises the width and strength of the vehicle’s stance. New 18 and 19-inch wheel designs combine contrasting bright machined and grey or black finishes, while at the rear there is a metal-like finish for the garnish beneath the screen and black plating for the under-run.</p><p>In the cabin the focus is on new upholstery designs with a sporty feel, with ribbed patterns with contrast red detailing. Quilted black leather seats will also be available with a striking red ribbon detail. The centre console features a nine-inch multimedia touchscreen display – the largest in any RAV4 model – for clear and easy control of the car’s entertainment, information and connectivity functions.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Premium equipment specifications</strong></p><p>Equipment specifications reflect the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid’s flagship status. <p><span>Indeed, when Toyota unveiled the first Prius, in 1997, it already had decades of background research when it started investigating the feasibility of using gas turbines to power an electric drive system for cars back in 1965. The system was actually displayed in a Toyota Sports 800 gas turbine hybrid at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1977 that promoted the philosophy: performance with respect for the environment.</span></p>

<p><span>From launch, Prius was an immediate commercial and critical success; the most technically advanced production car in the world and placing Toyota as a world leader in low emissions and hybrid technology. In the space of three years Prius gathered no less than 20 prestigious awards including the 1997 Japanese Car of the Year.</span></p>

<p><span>Launched in Europe in 2001, Prius moved into the second generation with Hybrid Synergy Drive&reg; in 2003 and was further revised at the start of 2006 to offer a fresh face and improved interior comfort and quality. At the same time, sharper driving dynamics were introduced with a series of chassis, suspension and steering enhancements.</span></p>

<p><span>Since launch, more than 750,000 Prius models (May YTD) have been sold worldwide and more than 66,000 are on the roads in Europe. Rising fuel prices and increasing environmental awareness plus, to a certain extent, preferential tax and city driving incentives are facilitating the change.</span></p>

<p><span>But customers who switch to Prius are not just doing it for lifestyle reasons; they are also extremely satisfied with their choice and the driving pleasure it offers. Toyota Prius has just topped the 2007 JD Power Customer Satisfaction survey in the UK and France, and the current generation Prius was named European Car of the Year 2005.</span></p>

<p><span>Prius has won the ADAC Eco-Test in Germany in 2004 and 2005, and in 2007, the 1.5-litre petrol engine of the Prius Hybrid Synergy Drive&reg; was named &ldquo;International Engine of the Year&rdquo; and &ldquo;Best New Engine&rdquo; in the International Engine of the Year awards. For the last four consecutive years, it has also won the &ldquo;Best Fuel Economy&rdquo; award.</span></p>

<p><span>Research shows that around 20% of customers switching to Prius have previously owned a luxury car. They are attracted by the environmental benefits of Prius but do not want to sacrifice performance or driving pleasure. Instead, they embrace the new technology and have high expectations of comfort and safety which Prius must satisfy.</span></p>

<p><span>Over the past 10 years, Toyota Prius has been continuously improved and refined. This process has ensured Prius offers not just reduced harmful emissions but also excellent driving dynamics and driving pleasure.</span></p>

<p><span>Today, the current Prius matches the performance of many conventional family cars with a top speed of and 0- acceleration in 10.9 seconds. Meanwhile Hybrid Synergy Drive&reg; technology achieves exhaust emissions that are among the cleanest in the world.</span></p>

<p><span>The first generation Prius, with the Toyota Hybrid System (THS), showed a level of improvement for carbon dioxide emissions of around 20% compared to conventional powertrains. For the second generation Prius, with Hybrid Synergy Drive&reg;, these emissions have again further fallen by 15%, from 120 g/km down to 104 g/km.</span></p>

<p><span>The latest generation Prius produces about 55% less CO2 and nearly half the nitrous oxides and hydrocarbons of other cars of comparable size equipped with modern standard exhaust treatment systems. Compared with an average D-segment cars on the market, driving a Prius can save up to one tonne of CO2 emissions per year (calculation based on the combined EC cycle, with annual driving distance). The official fuel consumption on the EC combined cycle is 4.3 l/100km. And, when it does eventually reach the end of its useful life, owners can be confident that Prius is 90% recyclable.</span></p>

<p><span>World-leading aerodynamics play a significant role in helping improve fuel consumption, reduce wind noise and allow increased performance. The reduced frontal area of Prius means it cuts through the air more efficiently and the car&rsquo;s smooth underbody reduces overall drag and resistance.</span></p>

<p><span>The Prius features a class leading aerodynamic drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.26 resulting in excellent high speed stability and quietness.</span></p>

<p><span>The Prius can furthermore run on electric motor only at a low speed and up to two kilometres distance, offering a completely silent driving experience.</span></p>

<p><span>Suspension and chassis refinements as recent as 2006 have been designed to improve driving pleasure still further while also enhancing ride comfort and high speed stability. The developments have focused on specific areas of chassis stiffness to improve dynamic stability, suspension tuning for better ride comfort and steering control for increased response and feel.</span></p>

<p><span>For the ultimate comfort, a high quality leather trim package is available with genuine leather seats and a leather trimmed steering wheel. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and brake assist are standard equipment, along with VSC+, a stability control system that co-ordinates with steering torque assist.</span></p>

<p>The Toyota Prius is now clearly established as the world&rsquo;s best selling hybrid car and it has been a sales success since its launch in Japan in 1997. Approximately 450,000 cars have been sold worldwide since that date and production capacity has recently been expanded further to cope with worldwide demand. Moreover, in order to satisfy demand in China, the production of Prius in this country has started at the end of last year, in Changchun City.</p>

<p>The newly improved Toyota Prius will be instantly recognisable by the fresh exterior design which creates a more refined appearance.</p>

<p>The front grille has been redesigned, featuring now a chrome insert, and a new front spoiler both improves the aerodynamics at high speed and helps create a more distinctive look.</p>

<p>The headlamps have been subtly restyled to create a more flowing look. Smoked clear coating has been applied to the headlamp extension while an inner lens has been added below the turn indicator lamp.</p>

<p>At the rear, chrome-plate mouldings have been utilised in the lamp structure and a white background to the stop lamp replaces the current black to add to the appeal.</p>

<p>This latest Prius will be available with a choice of eight exterior body colours with four new tones added (Ultra Silver, Barcelona Red, Opal Green and Ash Grey).</p>

<p>Throughout the interior of the newly improved Toyota Prius there have been significant enhancements to trim and finish to create a more refined environment.</p>

<p><em>The main surfaces of the instrument panel reveal a new, softer texture and a darker colour. This finish is extended to the upper door trims, front and rear. The seats&rsquo; fabric colour is new and its stitching patterns have been simplified.</em></p>

<p>For the ultimate comfort, genuine leather seats and a leather trimmed steering wheel become available. As an integrated part of the package, the centre console box is also leather (synthetic) trimmed.</p>

<p>Rear seat passengers will find additional comfort in the improved Prius. The seat width and main portion of the seat back have been increased in width by 50 mm and a redesigned rear seat cushion has lowered the hip-point by 6 mm.</p>

<p>These design changes will increase hip space for rear seat passengers while also increasing headroom.</p>

<p>In comparison with the model introduced in 2004, the newly improved Prius benefits from modifications focused on specific areas like chassis stiffness, to improve stability, suspension tuning to improve ride comfort and steering control to enhance response and feel. There have also been some aerodynamic changes to increase high-speed stability.</p>

<p>Chassis stiffness has been increased by the addition of reinforcement plates, notably around the rear cross member mounting, and by modifying parts such as the rear side and cross members.</p>

<p>In the rear suspension, the toe-correction bushings have been retuned for better compliance and the shock absorbers changed to give better ride comfort.</p>

<p>The electric power steering ECU settings have been modified in order to provide better steering feel and a number of changes made to stiffen the steering mounts to create more precise reaction. These changes include fitting stiffer alloy wheels which will react more precisely to directional changes.</p>

<p>The underbody aerodynamics have been improved by the fitment of a different engine undercover, the new front lip spoiler and new rear tyre spats to aid airflow around the rear wheels and tyres.</p>

<p>As one of the most sophisticated passenger cars available today, the Toyota Prius is also a showcase for advanced technologies. This newly improved version offers new state-of-the-art features, which not only demonstrate this principle but also enhance the driving experience.</p>

<p>The highlight is the Intelligent Park Assist (IPA) system, another world-first available in Prius &ndash; is unique and simple to operate, allowing the driver to select the target parking spot and then control the speed, while the car steers itself.</p>

<p>The system is designed to assist the driver in both parallel and &lsquo;rear-on&rsquo; parking situations and is activated by the IPA button on the dashboard. The driver then selects the target parking spot on the touch-sensitive viewing screen and the IPA sets the vehicle in motion, selecting the correct steering angle for each step of the process. The driver retains control of the speed of the vehicle through the brake pedal, deciding when to stop.</p>

<p>IPA is a simple system which takes signals from the electric power steering, yaw rate, acceleration and wheel angle sensors, the skid control ECU and the hybrid system&rsquo;s ECU.</p>

<p><em>If the driver prefers not to use IPA, there is also the more conventional Toyota Park Assist system which relies on a new, more compact rear camera to show images in the viewing screen. Superimposed on these images are colour-coded guidelines which show the predicted path of the Prius as it is reversed into the available space.</em></p>

<p>Also available with the newly improved Prius is the most sophisticated DVD-based satellite navigation system in the segment.</p>

<p>The navigation system is voice activated in three languages (English, French and German) for functions including phone control, audio, navigation and air conditioning. Route guidance is provided in 10 languages including, for the first time, Norwegian and Portuguese.</p>

<p>Improved map graphics now feature three-dimensional icons for points of interest and major landmarks.</p>

<p>For the first time in Prius, this system features RDS-TMC (Radio Data System &ndash; Traffic Message Channel) for countries with the appropriate infrastructure. This is a dynamic, real time route guidance feature that monitors traffic congestion on route and suggests alternatives if bad traffic conditions build up.</p>

<p>Furthermore, the new navigation system features a completely new ECU, delivering 65% faster calculation speed.</p>

<p>The newly improved Prius is fitted with a totally new audio head unit with a digital filter on the radio tuner to improve reception and the capability to play CDs with MP3 and WMA files.</p>

<p>Its DSP amplifier features Live Acoustic System, which utilises digital acoustic effects to improve sound quality. These include TruBass (which extends bass sounds in the frequency range between 100 Hz and 200 Hz to produce an effect similar to a sub-woofer) and Focus (which emphasises sound around the 8 kHz frequency and makes passengers think the sound is coming from the front of the car, rather than speakers in the doors).</p>

<p>There is an auxiliary socket in the centre console for connecting portable devices, such as an iPod or other MP3 player, to the audio system.</p>

<p>The audio unit also features Automatic Sound Leveliser, which adjusts volume and equaliser settings, to compensate for an increase in cabin noise due to speed.</p>

<p>Toyota is using the Geneva Motor Show to showcase its concept for a compact, rugged mini SUV that could bring a fresh approach to the segment.</p>

<p>The Urban Cruiser draws heavily on Toyota&rsquo;s heritage in Sports Utility Vehicles through the legendary Land Cruiser range, the best-selling RAV4 and the tough Hilux. It has styling cues typical of Toyota SUVs but also adds its own dynamic flair to bring a more rugged originality to the mini SUV segment.</p>

<p>The Urban Cruiser is a product of ED2, Toyota&rsquo;s European styling studio in the south of France and is the work of chief designer Elvio d&rsquo;Aprile. He worked with Porsche and Pininfarina before joining Toyota in Japan in 1994 and then moved to ED2 when it opened in 2000. Elvio was also the chief designer of the Corolla Verso, a vehicle frequently praised by its dynamic and robust design.</p>

<p><em>&ldquo;Typical customers in the mini SUV segment are urban individualists&rdquo;, says Elvio d&rsquo;Aprile.</em> <em>&ldquo;They are seeking a rugged look within a compact body and want to stand out, and above, the crowd. The Urban Cruiser concept is the car that will allow them to freely express their personality.&rdquo;</em></p>

<p><em>&ldquo;The Urban Cruiser breaks with conventionality by bringing something different to the mini SUV segment. It is more dynamic, but also rugged and brings the special Toyota SUV flair.&rdquo;</em></p>

<p>The Urban Cruiser is the latest Toyota to be created under the Vibrant Clarity design philosophy which now underpins all the latest Toyota creations. By working to the Vibrant Clarity discipline, Toyota aims to bring the two elements of successful design, form and function, together under one package.</p>

<p>Therefore, Vibrant Clarity combines two elements: Vibrant form, which stands for dynamism and energy, plus Clarity of function which calls for more rational values such as simplicity and logic.</p>

<h2><strong>Fresh, robust exterior</strong></h2>

<p>The Urban Cruiser concept clearly demonstrates design similarities with other models in the Toyota range and draws on the company&rsquo;s long established heritage in SUVs. It shows the quality inherent in all Toyota design while adding the fresh and robust look that this segment demands.</p>

<p>The Toyota SUV heritage is most evident in the extensive use of a trapezoidal design element that is now in the front bumper, the grille and lower door panels. This creates a dynamic feeling but also suggests protection.</p>

<p>Furthermore, the trapezoidal form can also be found on the side window, evoking a Toyota design cue reminiscent of several other models, like AYGO, Corolla Hatchback, Corolla Verso, the new RAV4 and others.</p>

<p>The massive wheel arches are also intended to emphasise the SUV character. They converge towards the car&rsquo;s geometric centre in order to provide a compact and agile shape while disguising the relatively long wheelbase &ndash; itself designed to create maximum interior space.</p>

<p>You can see all the elements of the Vibrant Clarity design philosophy in Urban Cruiser. These are defined within the four principles of P.A.S.S. (Proportion, Architecture, Surface, Special touch).</p>

<p><em><strong>&bull; Proportion:</strong> the long cabin &ndash; offering excellent interior space &ndash; combines with short, powerful overhangs to create an effect of perfect imbalance. This results in a massive, but dynamic body proportion.<strong>&bull; Architecture:</strong> when viewed from above, there is a pronounced V-shape to the front &ndash; created by the dominant front and rear wheel arches which stand out from the bodyshell.<strong>&bull; Surface:</strong> the extensive use of trapezoidal design is distinctive in the front bumper shape and the freeform surface of the lower door panels.<strong>&bull; Special touch:</strong> The crispness of the overall exterior design is completed by sharply sliced surfaces that can be found in the front and rear bumpers.</em></p>

<p>In addition to these distinguishing elements, the Urban Cruiser makes a significant break from the conventional with the use of satin finish exterior body paint rather than the common gloss.</p>

<h2><strong>Fashion-led interior</strong></h2>

<p>Just as the exterior design of Urban Cruiser breaks from the conventional, the interior adopts a new approach too. Here the designer wanted to move away from the traditional car interior design and focus on examples outside the car industry, such as modern furniture.</p>

<p>It is the work of Yi Yeong Jae, the Korean designer who also created the Toyota Motor Triathlon Race Car, shown one year ago, at this same motor show.</p>

<p><em>&ldquo;I was inspired by the designs of modern, fashionable furniture,&rdquo; says Yi Yeong Jae. &ldquo;The interior design consists of several different surfaces which are treated as different, independent layers.</em> <em>This is the case with the seats, the door panels and the dashboard.&rdquo;</em></p>

<p>There is a feeling of spaciousness inside Urban Cruiser which is in keeping with its roomy but compact concept. The seats adopt a thin, elegant design that is both space saving and comfortable. The materials are modern with a premium quality and show some of the characteristics of nylon.</p>

<p>Special features of the interior design include the door handles &ndash; created to facilitate use &ndash; and the navigation screen which is viewed through a transparent curved panel integrated into the centre console.</p>

<p><em>The interior seeks to create a sense of spaciousness and envelopment at the same time, based on the key idea of making high-tech warm and friendly to people. This is reflected in the driver&rsquo;s seat area, too, which features a low instrument panel incorporating a large multi-information display, assuring a good, broad view. To further enhance the calm and relaxed atmosphere of the interior, we employed variable lighting intensity to produce a calming effect over the instrument panel and door trim. The Fine-T demonstrates the awesome space-efficiency and hospitality that are possible in an FCHV.</em></p>

<p>The Fine-T extends warm hospitality to users by alleviating the effort of getting in and out. As the gull-wing doors open, the driver&rsquo;s seat rotates outward to assist in boarding.</p>

<p>Once the user is seated, the seat glides back automatically to the driving position. When ready to leave the vehicle, pressing a button sets the seat to the exiting position, and the user can simply stand up to get out. The drive-by-wire steering system stows away automatically when preparing to exit the vehicle.</p>

<h2><strong>Advanced fuel cell hybrid system</strong></h2>

<p><em>Toyota&rsquo;s state-of-the-art fuel cell hybrid system demonstrates how close we can come to having zero effect on the environment. Hydrogen supplied from Toyota-built, 70 MPa (approx. 700 atmospheres) storage tanks reacts chemically with oxygen (from the air) to produce electricity in the company&rsquo;s proprietary fuel cell stack (the Toyota FC Stack), which, like the vehicle&rsquo;s storage battery (when needed), drives the electric motors that power the vehicle. A power control unit efficiently manages the power sources (the fuel cell stack and storage battery).</em></p>

<p>To fit its compact dimensions, the Fine-T employs a downsized, higher-performance new Toyota FC Stack configuration. This fuel cell stack adopts a new alloy catalyst, which allows a dramatic reduction in the amount of precious metals used. These units are mounted beneath the vehicle floor, thereby creating more cabin space, while yielding a radically low center-of-gravity and low inertia moment, which contribute to an exhilarating driving experience and help enable large steering angles.</p>

<h2><strong>Unparalled manoeuvrability</strong></h2>

<p>The Fine-T enhances the fun of mobility while offering a major advance in handling convenience when driving on narrow roads and during parking. Supporting this maneuverability are an independent four-wheel large-angle steering system and independent four-wheel drive using in-wheel motors with integrated drive power and wheel turning-angle control.</p>

<p><em>These drive systems contribute to a distinctively low center of gravity and low moment of inertia, yielding an extremely stable feel, achieving an excellent balance of driving pleasure and stability. The result is exhilarating driving performance that exceeds expectations for a passenger car.</em></p>

<p><em>In addition, a drive-by-wire system connects the driver&rsquo;s controls to actuators that operate vehicle functions, providing an unprecedented degree of freedom in vehicle navigation. In front-axle/rear-axle turning mode, the vehicle can be turned around from the front or rear. This maneuvering capability is particularly handy for parallel parking, both when entering and exiting inline parking spots. In directional change mode, continuously variable steering of the front and rear wheels allows a change of direction of almost the entire length of the vehicle in four directions. This enables U-turns on dead-end streets and when coming out of inline parking spots. On-the-spot turning mode, as the name suggests, allows 360-degree turning on the vertical axis.</em></p>

<p>The Fine-T employs peripheral monitoring video cameras and a large display to support freedom of vehicle movement and reinforce active safety functions. A front-view camera is installed above the license plate and a rear-view camera below the Toyota badge at the back of the vehicle. Side cameras are located at the door handle position on the left and right doors. Combined, these video cameras monitor the entire periphery of the vehicle for obstacles. A large display on the instrument panel shows views of both sides of the vehicle. The central area of the display contains an obstacle recognition screen.</p>

<p>The display helps extend visibility to areas around the vehicle the driver cannot normally see.</p>

<h2><strong>Adopting &ldquo;carbon-neutral&rdquo; materials</strong></h2>

<p>With the aim of controlling the increase of atmospheric CO2 (the cause of global warming), the Fine-T&rsquo;s interior employs a substantial volume of plant-sourced materials.</p>

<p>Plants are considered &ldquo;carbon-neutral&rdquo; because they absorb CO2 in photosynthesis, so even if they are burned, the net amount of CO2 stays the same over the entire life cycle.</p>

<p>With the Fine-T, Toyota pursued the possibilities of using carbon-neutral materials over a wide range of interior fittings, processing polylactic acid (PLA*), obtained from sugar cane, as well as Kenaf and other plant fiber into a variety of textures for door trim, suede-like ceiling material, seat nets and floor mats.</p>

<p>The &ldquo;p.o.d&rdquo;, exhibited in 2001, was a vehicle that could express emotional states, almost like a family member or friend.</p>

<p>This demonstrated how, thanks to state-of-the-art information technology, personal mobility vehicles could take on human-like emotional and learning behaviors. Following the &ldquo;PM&rdquo; of 2003, the &ldquo;i-unit&rdquo; Toyota exhibited at EXPO 2005 AICHI (Exposition of Global Harmony) was a personal mobility vehicle that used the smallest amount of energy required to transport one person. It also offered freedom of movement for the individual, and greater possibilities for humankind, thereby making it truly environmentally compatible.</p>

<p><em>Our latest in this series of personal mobility vehicles is the i-swing. With its small, flexible body, the i-swing fits right into a person&rsquo;s living space. The i-swing also exhibits human-like freedom of movement and can be customized almost like choosing an outfit. Through two-way communication employing a range of advanced devices, this new form of mobility allows more individual expression and deeper social interaction, going far beyond the capabilities of conventional vehicles.</em></p>

The body is constructed of shock-absorbing, low-rebound polyurethane and the exterior surface is partly covered with fabric as a measure against making people feel oppressed in crowded situations.</p>

Vehicle control changes according to the mode, assuring high levels of both ride comfort and dynamic performance.</em></p>

<p>The three-wheeler runs on two rear-drive wheels and one steerable front wheel, with the left and right rear wheels moving up and down independently. During acceleration and deceleration, the entire vehicle body tilts forward and backward shifting the center of gravity.</p>

<p>When turning left and right, the vehicle body tilts inwards so that the pressure on the driver is always applied downward along the body axis.</p>

<p>Although a high center of gravity and extremely short tread and wheelbase would normally make stable movement difficult in a machine like the I-swing, the position of the center of gravity and the balance of weight on each wheel, as well as motive power, are controlled automatically, much like the movement of a human body when running, turning and stopping.</p>

<p>The result is excellent dynamic performance and a natural ride feel.</p>

<p>During three-wheel driving, the i-swing operating system offers two modes to match the driver&rsquo;s operational skill and purpose.</p>

<p><em>In &ldquo;Comfort Mode&rdquo;, two linked joysticks alone are used. Vehicle attitude (center-of-gravity position) and front-wheel steering, as well as rear wheel left/right drive power, are optimally controlled simply by pushing a joystick in the intended direction of travel. This makes driving easy and pleasant for anyone. Lifting the joystick diagonally forward switches the i-swing to &ldquo;Active Mode&rdquo;. At the same time, the driver assumes a forward-inclined attitude to facilitate agile movements. The joystick sensitivity increases and at the same time, foot pedals can control the vehicle attitude. The driver keeps assuming the optimal posture for the next movement, skilfully accelerating, braking and turning in a series of driving actions that feels much like skiing.</em></p>

<p>With suitable training, drivers can even put in a performance that resembles dancing.</p>

<p><em>With the front wheel stowed away between the two rear wheels, the i-swing goes into two-wheel driving mode, using a gyrosensor for inverted control. One can switch to this driving mode when the i-swing is standing still or moving at low speed. As in three-wheel driving mode, operating the joystick moves the I-swing forward/backward as the center of gravity shifts forward and backward under optimal control, while turning is accomplished by rotational speed difference between the left and right wheels.</em></p>

<p><em>The driver&rsquo;s head is located centrally with respect to the vehicle axle. So when turning on the spot, the movement feels natural, just like turning your own body around. When stationary, the controller maintains the center of gravity above the center of the vehicle axle, so even if the driver significantly shifts position, the vehicle remains more or less stationary as long as there is no joystick operation. The driver&rsquo;s posture also remains constant, even when the vehicle is traveling up and down gradients.</em></p>

<p>When two i-swings are brought together, they can travel side by side with one i-swing becoming the master vehicle. Joystick inputs on the master vehicle are transmitted through short-range communications to the second vehicle, which mimics the master&rsquo;s movements. Since the two vehicles travel by operating the master vehicle alone, the driver of the second vehicle enjoys the same relationship to the actual driver as someone in the passenger seat of a conventional car.</p>

<h2><strong>Artificial Intelligence communication</strong></h2>

<p>The i-swing uses A.I. (artificial intelligence) technology to communicate with the driver. This takes the form of a virtual character, which appears in pop-up displays at left and right shoulder level, and changes depending on the driver&rsquo;s personality. Even after leaving the vehicle, driver and vehicle remain linked by mobile phone or personal computer.</p>

<p>A.I. allows the vehicle to learn the driver&rsquo;s behavior patterns, and to select pertinent information based on this learning, either from memory or the Internet, for communication with the driver at a particular time and place.</p>

<p>Thanks to A.I., the i-swing has the potential to make our lives in the real world more enjoyable and fulfilling.</p>

<p>&nbsp; <strong>The third-generation Toyota RAV4</strong></p>

<h2><strong>Redefining the standard in compact SUVs</strong></h2>

<p>The all-new Toyota RAV4 is setting fresh benchmarks in the compact Sports Utility Vehicle segment with the introduction of premium levels of driving performance, quality, passenger comfort and equipment.</p>

<p><em>The new RAV4 is the third generation of a model that is a best seller in Europe and a worldwide success for Toyota. At launch, in 1994, the Toyota RAV4 established the popularity of compact sports utility vehicles and more than 2 million RAV4s have been sold since then. More than 655,000 RAV4s have been sold in Europe alone (by end-year &rsquo;05).</em></p>

<p>The RAV4 has been completely redesigned for 2006, taking into account modern customer expectations. Its primary role will be to confirm Toyota as the leading carmaker in the SUV-compact segment.</p>

<h2><strong>Designed for modern life</strong></h2>

The all-new third generation Toyota RAV4 continues this pioneering spirit but, in response to modern customer demands, adds significantly more premium quality, increased interior space and an intelligent, flexible interior package.</em></p>

<p>The new Toyota RAV4 is 145 mm longer (4,395mm &ndash; 4315mm without backdoor spare wheel) than the current generation, with a significantly increased wheelbase (+70 mm) and rear overhang. This allows greatly improved passenger comfort; the cabin length (1,820mm) has been increased by 85mm with the couple distance between front and rear seats increased by 55 mm.</p>

<p>The width is also increased (by 80mm) and increased shoulder space allows the front seats to be set further apart, again improving comfort. Height remains below that of many competitors, emphasising the sleek, squat styling and premium passenger car driving performance of the RAV4. But the rear seat headroom has been improved, allowing the new RAV4 to seat five adults in comfort.</p>

<p>And, despite the lengthened wheelbase, a lower turning circle of 5.1 meters has been achieved &ndash; well below many rival vehicles.</p>

<p>The precision of the interior structure underlines the premium quality of the new RAV4. The elimination of any break lines, the tight panel gaps and the matching of surface levels all contribute to the perceived quality of the vehicle and are a tribute to its engineering excellence.</p>

<p>The interior volume has been increased to 3,822 litres, an increase of 13% on the outgoing model. This is most noticeable in the luggage compartment, the rear passenger headroom and the shoulder room.</p>

<p>The newly developed rear suspension with the shock absorbers positioned diagonally under the floor results in a 230mm increase in the luggage room width.</p>

<p><em>Customers for the Toyota RAV4 enjoy an active lifestyle, often needing to adapt their vehicle to the demands of a growing family. Here the new RAV4 will offer a unique feature that most clearly expresses its practicality and modularity: the Toyota Easy Flat seating system.</em></p>

<p>Using one of two one-touch levers, easily accessible from the rear tailgate, the rear seats can be folded down into the rear floor space to leave an &lsquo;easy-flat&lsquo; luggage space without the need to remove any seat cushions or headrests.</p>

<p>The rear seats can also split (60:40) for maximum flexibility and can recline on an individual basis. They can slide backwards and forwards over 165mm to greatly enhance passenger comfort or increase luggage capacity. The flat boot floor also offers additional, underfloor storage space for increased security &ndash; and the rear luggage cover can be stowed here when not in use.</p>

<p>The three, hi-tech analogue Optitron meters dominate the instrument panel and give a premium, sporty image. The multi-information display offers a wide range of customisable function setting options including six languages1 and metric or imperial units.</p>

<p>Standard equipment on all models includes air-conditioning (manual or dual automatic on high grade) and a six-speaker radio/CD unit (with 6 CD-changer on high grade) which has been adapted for MP3 file playback.</p>

<p>A dual-zone, fully automatic climate control system, with adjustable pollen removal, is available; while many owners will want to upgrade to the full map DVD navigation system with Bluetooth compatibility and touch screen.</p>

<p>Headlining this engine line-up is the remarkable D-4D 180 engine which is the most powerful diesel in the compact SUV sector. Available in the premium RAV4 X, it enables customers to enjoy a top speed of 200km/h and acceleration to 100 km/h in 9.3 seconds while achieving combined fuel consumption of 7.0 litres/100km.</p>

<p>The D-4D 180 is not only powerful, but clean - thanks to Toyota&rsquo;s advanced and unique Toyota D-CAT (Diesel Clean Advanced Technology), an emissions control technology which reduces NOx and particulate emissions at the same time.</p>

<p>Equally impressive are the other two engines available across the RAV4 range: the D-4D 135 diesel and the latest development of the 2.0 VVT-i petrol.</p>

<p><em>Like the D-4D 180, the D-4D 135 uses 32-bit processor technology for accurate and optimum control of main engine functions, leading to enhanced engine efficiency. With maximum power output of 100kW (136 DIN hp) this engine allows the new RAV4 to reach a top speed of 180 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.5 seconds.</em></p>

<p>Maximum torque of 310 Nm over the engine range of 2,000 rpm to 2,800 rpm gives excellent mid-gear acceleration and flexible driving performance while preserving remarkable fuel economy. The Toyota RAV4 D-4D 135 combined fuel consumption is 6.6 litres/100km.</p>

<p>The new Toyota RAV4 with 2.2-litre D-4D engines will come as standard with the latest Toyota six-speed manual transmission which boasts smooth, quick and precise gear-change.</p>

<p>For customers who prefer the smooth power delivery of a petrol engine, the new RAV4 is available with the latest development of the 2.0-litre VVT-i. In the new RAV4, the engine develops 112 kW (152 DIN hp) at 6,000 rpm and has maximum torque available of 194 Nm at 4,000rpm.</p>

<p>Equipped with this engine, the RAV4 (with five speed manual transmission) is capable of a maximum speed of 185 km/h and will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.6 seconds. Fuel consumption is 8.6 litres/100km.</p>

<p>The new RAV4 2.0-litre VVT-i is available with the option of an advanced four-speed automatic gearbox.</p>

<p>A key factor in this driving pleasure is the all-new front and rear suspension, designed to optimise handling and enhance stability while, at the same time, offering excellent standards of passenger comfort and ride.</p>

<p><em>The front suspension utilises an enhanced McPherson strut design that has been engineered for significant weight reduction and improved passenger comfort. This has resulted in a complete redesign from the lower arm to the coils springs and shock absorbers.</em></p>

<p><em>The rear suspension is unique to RAV4 and utilises a newly-developed independent double wishbone and trailing arm. This gives excellent vehicle stability in straight line with roll-stiffness optimised for good performance under cornering.</em></p>

<p>The new RAV4 uses a high response, mechanical rack and pinion with a newly-developed electric power steering (EPS) system resulting in easy but precise steering effort and excellent steering response.</p>

<p><em>There has also been a particular emphasis on management of pedestrian safety to minimise injuries in the event of a collision with a pedestrian. The bonnet itself has been redesigned to be a deformable structure and the area around the bonnet lock features crash-absorbing reinforcements and a crumple zone. The lock itself has been moved further back, away from the likely area of pedestrian impact. Energy absorbing zones have been incorporated into the front section of the new RAV4 and, at the rear edge of the bonnet, the cowl has an open cross-section structure that allows its underside to crumple.</em></p>

<p><span>The all-new Toyota RAV4 will set new benchmarks in the compact Sports Utility Vehicle segment with the introduction of premium levels of driving performance, quality, passenger comfort and equipment to this market.</span></p>

<p><i><span>The new RAV4 is the third generation of a model that is a best seller in Europe and a worldwide success for Toyota.</span> <span>At launch, in 1994, the Toyota RAV4 established the popularity of compact sports utility vehicles and more than 1.8 million RAV4s have been sold since then.</span> <span>More than 655,000 RAV4s have been sold in Europe alone (by end-year &rsquo;05).</span></i></p>

<p><span>The RAV4 has been completely redesigned for 2006, taking into account modern customer expectations. Its primary role will be to confirm Toyota as the leading carmaker in the SUV-compact segment.</span></p>
