]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (TMMF) today held an official ceremony to mark the start of production on May 6, 2013 of its successful Toyota Yaris compact car for export to the United States of America, Canada and Puerto Rico. The model produced is the conventional petrol Yaris and annual export volume will be around 25,000 units on a full-year basis. An additional EUR 10 million has been invested by TMMF to build the Yaris to the specific requirements of the new export market.</p>

<p>From the small Northern French town of Onnaing, near Valenciennes, TMMF will now export its vehicles to more than 40 countries, including destinations like South Africa, Egypt, Canada and the United States of America.</p>

<p>"Building on more than 10 years of experience in high quality car production, this Yaris is another endorsement of TMMF's excellence in manufacturing," said Makoto Sano, President of TMMF.</p>

<p>He added: "We are proud to be recognised as a true player in the Toyota organisation and welcome this new business opportunity to further strengthen TMMF's position as an important exporter in France."</p>

<p>Speaking at the ceremony, Toyota Motor Europe President and CEO Didier Leroy said: "The additional export market is yet another evidence of the success enjoyed by Toyota's manufacturing operations in France."</p>

<p>He added: "There are many reasons to preserve production of compact cars in France but all partners need to work together to maintain TMMF's competitive advantage. In Valenciennes, highly skilled and quality-minded employees that can handle complex production processes, and the proximity of good logistics and supplier networks are also major key success factors."</p>

<p>"With Quebec accounting for 65% of Yaris' Canadian sales, a warm welcome will be assured for this 'Made in France' vehicle," said Seiji Ichii, President and CEO of Toyota Canada Inc.</p>

<p>The Toyota Yaris became the first vehicle ever produced in France to be certified with the new "French Origin Guaranteed" ("Origine France Garantie") label. This certificate was created in order to help customers identify products that have more than 50% of their value manufactured in France. On the occasion of the ceremony at TMMF, Yves J&eacute;go, Member of the French Parliament as well as founder and president of the non-profit organisation Pro France, in charge of promoting the brand "France" and the label "French Origin Guaranteed", officially presented the certificate to TMMF.</p>

<p>The current, third generation Toyota Yaris was launched in Europe in the summer of 2011, followed by the Toyota Yaris Hybrid in June 2012. In an overall declining B-segment, the Yaris model range grew 27% in 2012 compared to 2011, mainly supported by strong sales of the Yaris Hybrid. ]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>The new Yaris Trend special edition makes its debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. On sale from the beginning of 2013, the Trend features unique exterior styling and model-specific interior finishes, textures and colours.</p>

<p>Available with all the main model powertrains, it has been created to attract a new, urban-based, younger group of customers who want their car design to be fashionable and appealing.</p>

<p>The Trend builds on the unique product strengths of the Yaris, making it the smartest choice for city dwellers.</p>

<p>The Yaris has been nicknamed "Piccolo Genio" (Little Genius) since its original launch, which highlights its clever packing. It remains the most compact car in the B-segment, yet still delivers class-leading interior space. The Yaris also has a class-leading turning circle of only 4.7 metres, which makes it highly manoeuvrable in congested city streets or whilst parking.</p>

<p>Reinforcing the superb value for money offered by every model in the range, the Yaris was the first vehicle to offer B-segment customers an affordable advanced multimedia system with the launch, in 2011, of Toyota Touch and Toyota Touch & Go systems.</p>

<p>The Yaris Trend has been styled to highlight the most dynamic elements of the new Yaris range design execution, both reinforcing the unique character of the vehicle and, through an emphasis on horizontal forms, giving a stronger link between the exterior and interior design.</p>

<p><strong>Exterior</strong></p>

<p>To the front, the new Toyota is identified by numerous model-specific styling details. It features chrome elements in the fog light surrounds and headlamps, whilst White versions are equipped with white covers within the headlamp clusters to maintain consistency with the body colour.</p>

<p>In profile, the Yaris Trend features blacked-out B and C glazing pillars and chrome door sills to reinforce the powerful horizontality of the design and create the impression of an enlarged window area.</p>

<p>Additionally design elements reinforcing the vehicle's visual appeal include a chrome door mirror cover, unique bi-tone 16" alloy wheels with machined surfaces and instantly recognisable 'Deco line' surface detailing running back over the bodywork from the front headlamp clusters.</p>

<p>To the rear, the Yaris Trend is equipped with a roof spoiler and hybrid-style, LED lamp clusters.</p>

<p>The Yaris Trend with 'Deco line' will be available in a choice of pure White or Silver exterior colours, specifically chosen to maximise the added visual appeal created by the new design elements. Versions without 'Deco line' are offered in all available exterior colours.</p>

<p><strong>Interior</strong></p>

<p>With strong links to the exterior design theme, the new Trend features a black and white interior with a touch of Ochre which gives the cabin a uniquely clean, pure style and an enhanced sensory experience appropriate to young design-focused urban customers.</p>

<p>The centre console geometry has been changed, with the soft-touch dashboard and upper door panels finished in white to more strongly emphasise the horizontality of the design. The dashboard itself is highlighted by 'Deco line' surface detailing which matches that of the exterior bodywork.</p>

<p>Sensory quality has been improved with a shorter gear lever height and a new, larger shift knob which mirrors the improved tactility of the centre console and adds the greater visual appeal of painted trim elements and Ochre stitching.</p>

<p>The shift knob of versions equipped with Multidrive S transmission also features a white painted insert and Ochre stitching.</p>

<p>Harmonising with both dashboard and gear lever design, the steering wheel also features white gloss switchgear surrounds and Ochre stitching.</p>

<p>The interior's striking, black and white design theme is completed by bold, high-definition front and rear seat finishes unique to the Yaris Trend.</p>

<p>The upper seatback bolsters and headrests are finished in a new, pearl white, leather-look material decorated with Ochre stitching. Matching both the exterior and dashboard design, both front and rear headrests are highlighted by 'Deco line' surface detailing.</p>

<p>The seats' central fabric inserts now include a flock yarn for greater softness. New grey piping matches the change in seat belt colour from black to grey, and complementary black stitching completes the new seat finishes.</p>

]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>Since the European launch of the first Yaris in 1999, each successive generation of the car has been developed in accordance with the key concept: "compact outside while roomy inside". The Yaris quickly became nicknamed Piccolo Genio (Little Genius) &mdash; a testament to the first two generations of a car which, despite an increasingly crowded segment, has consistently set new standards in packaging ingenuity.</p>

<p>The third generation Yaris inherits all the clever packaging DNA of these previous generations, while the exterior showcases the greater appeal of a bolder, more dynamic and elegant design execution befitting a European compact car.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Packaging &mdash; minimal increase in bodyshell size</strong></p>

<p>Overall vehicle length is now 3,885 mm, a limited increase of just 100 mm. With an average car length of 4 meters in the B-segment, the new Yaris remains one of the most compact vehicles in its class. This is reflected in a class-leading turning circle of just 4.7* metres, which makes Toyota's new compact hatchback particularly manoeuvrable in the urban environment.</p>

<p>The width of the new Yaris remains the same, while the wheelbase has been extended by 50 mm. Its height has decreased by 20 mm, giving the car a lower centre of gravity and a more sporting stance. Within its well proportioned form, the design's short front and rear overhangs &mdash; increased by only 35 mm and 15 mm respectively- and prominent wheel arches express stability, agility and dynamism.</p>

<p><strong>Styling &mdash; the new face of the next generation Toyota family</strong></p>

<p>The bold frontal treatment identifies the Yaris as the first vehicle to feature the distinctive new face of the next generation Toyota family. Key to the new frontal styling is a change in the proportions of the upper and lower grilles, with the emphasis now placed on enlarging the latter for a more assertive, masculine look.</p>

<p>Elegantly sculpted to highlight the Toyota badge, a full-width concave shaped upper grille is flanked by new, 'keen'-look headlights. Their slim design incorporates dual lamps and, on some grades, smoke-plated 'eyebrows' to emphasise the new Yaris' bolder, more horizontal front styling.</p>

<p>Within the lower bumper, a strong, protruding centre section houses a large air intake to focus attention on the bottom half of the vehicle, reinforcing the Yaris' low centre of gravity and giving it a more ground-hugging appearance.</p>

<p>Whilst maintaining the model's classic 'Y' pattern graphic, these new frontal styling elements give the Yaris a bolder, more masculine appearance.</p>

<p>In profile, the dynamism of the vehicle is reinforced by the more prominent design of the steeply sloped beltline which has been a key styling cue for each generation of Yaris. The base of the A pillar has also been moved forwards to strengthen the Yaris' stylish, cab-forward silhouette.</p>

<p>Both front and rear three-quarter visibility has been improved through a larger front quarterlight and the elimination of the rear glazing division bar, the latter giving a more dynamic look to the rear glazing. Three-door models feature a thinner, forward-slanting C pillar, further increasing the rear glazing area while awarding the car an even more dynamic stance. A flowing, door cill character line and front and rear aero corner treatments further emphasise the new Yaris' low centre of gravity and elegant, long wheelbase profile.</p>

<p>To the rear, the detailing of the lamp clusters, top-hinged tailgate inset into the bumper and lower bumper treatment are visually interlinked, once again maintaining the model's classic, "Y" pattern graphic.</p>

<p>The smooth flow of the beltline round the rear shoulders, the extended lower bumper and the Coke bottle silhouette combine to give the vehicle a wider more stable stance. And the higher relocation of the license plate beneath a chrome bar garnish within the tailgate brings a more premium quality image to the design execution.</p>

<p>The third generation Yaris features new 15" and 16" alloy wheel designs, and will be available in a choice of 10 exterior colours. Bringing a more colourful palette to the Yaris, five colours are newly adopted by the model range, and two &mdash; Gin Buck Silver and Turquoise- are newly developed.</p>

<p><strong>Aerodynamics &mdash; class-leading drag coefficient of Cd 0.287</strong></p>

<p>Aerodynamic efficiency is fundamental to fuel efficiency, vehicle stability and quiet running, and every element of the new Yaris' bodywork has been styled to optimise airflow and minimise drag.</p>

<p>Sized to optimise powertrain cooling, both upper and lower front grilles have been carefully shaped to smooth the intake of air into the engine bay. The profiles of the front bumper aero corners, bonnet, steeply raked A pillar, door mirrors, roofline, rear spoiler, rear bumper aero corners, and even the rear combination lamps have all been designed to maximise the Yaris' aerodynamic efficiency.</p>

<p>In addition, numerous underbody airflow rectification components have been adopted to create a flat surface, smoothing the flow of air under the new Yaris. These include a front spoiler a full engine undercover front, centre and rear spats and a rear undercover which incorporates National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics-style vertical fins, creating a laminar flow effect to enhance ride stability.</p>

<p><strong>&mdash; Improved Stop & Start system with longer engine shut off and broader operating temperature band</strong></p>
]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>Continuing the successful mix of powertrains featured in the previous generation model range, the new Yaris will be available with a choice of three engines 1.0 and 1.33 litre VVT-i petrol engines and a 1.4 litre D-4D turbodiesel.</p>

<p>The 1.33 litre petrol unit may be mated to Toyota's latest Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), Multidrive S, while an automated manual transmission, MultiMode, is available as an option on 1.4 D-4D diesel versions of the new Yaris.</p>

<p>All three engines benefit from the application of Toyota Optimal Drive, a range of engineering measures designed to maximise performance and driving enjoyment while minimising fuel consumption and CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions.</p>

<p>Toyota Optimal Drive focuses on several key aspects of powertrain development such as lightweight, compact design, enhanced combustion efficiency, low friction components and environmentally friendly technologies. This, combined with weight saving measures and aerodynamic improvements, helps lower fuel consumption and CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions without compromising power and torque levels.</p>

<p>Combining light weight and compact design with the power and torque delivery essential to urban driving, all three engines return highly competitive fuel consumption figures, generate low, tax-efficient CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions and are Euro V compliant.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>1.0 Litre VVT-i petrol engine</strong></p>

<p>A marvel of miniaturisation, Toyota's 3-cylinder, 1.0 litre VVT-i petrol engine led the trend for powertrain downsizing. To this day, it remains a reference for compact, efficient engineering. The lightest unit in its class, it has won successive Engine of the Year awards in the sub-1.0 litre category.</p>

<p>Mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, the latest version of the 998 cc unit generates 51 kW/ 69 DIN hp at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 93 Nm at 3,600 rpm. Fuel consumption has been lowered by 4% to a class-leading 4.8 l/100 km, and CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions have fallen by 7% to 110 g/km.</p>

<p>The 1.0 litre petrol engine is produced in Europe, at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>1.33 Litre Dual VVT-i petrol engine</strong></p>

<p>The 1.33 litre petrol engine is equipped with dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent), Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and a remarkably high compression ratio of 11.5:1. Mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, it generates 73 kW/ 99 DIN hp at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 125 Nm at 4,000 rpm. With a smoothened torque curve, the unit combines strong dynamic performance with fuel economy of just 5.1 l/100 km and CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions of only 118 g/km, when combined with the Multidrive S transmission.</p>

<p>The engine unit is lightweight and compact, with a small bore and long stroke, resulting in a very high power-to-weight ratio. It features a resin-type cylinder head cover and intake manifold, and the intake channel has been streamlined to optimise airflow for improved combustion efficiency.</p>

<p>The adoption of camshaft roller rocker arms, a highly compact oil pump and a reduction in the number of ribs on the auxiliary belt helps minimise engine friction losses, hence improving fuel economy. And control of the Dual VVT-i and EGR systems has been integrated to further enhance combustion efficiency.</p>

<p>Dual VVT-i helps boost response levels across the entire rev range by varying the air-fuel intake and exhaust valve timing to suit the conditions at any given time. In addition to improving torque at low and medium engine speeds, the system also reduces emissions.</p>

<p>EGR reintroduces precise amounts of cooled exhaust gas into the intake system. This not only reduces engine pumping loses through a reduction in intake vacuum pressure, but also lowers engine operating temperatures by 40˚C to minimise the situations where fuel enrichment is necessary to protect the catalytic converter from overheating damage.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Multidrive S transmission</strong></p>

<p>The 1.33 litre petrol engine's optional Multidrive S transmission showcases Toyota's latest Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) technology. It features a manual override, sequential, 7-step mode operable by either the gearshift lever or steering wheel-mounted paddles.</p>

<p>This compact, lightweight CVT system is one of the most fuel efficient automatic transmission in the B-segment petrol, returning 5.1 l/100km.</p>

<p>Multidrive S operates within a wider band of gear ratios than a conventional transmission, allowing for both better acceleration from a standstill and improved fuel efficiency at cruising speeds. Its advanced control systems incorporate Flex Lock-up Control, Flex Start Control, Lock-up Slip Control and Speed Ratio Control to maximise fuel efficiency, minimise noise and enhance the driving experience.</p>

<p>Flex Lock-up Control continuously adjusts the degree of lock-up within the torque converter. This control function optimises the transmission's balance of torque delivery and fuel economy. It allows the engine to deliver the greatest fuel efficiency, whilst minimising vibration at even low vehicle speeds.</p>

<p>When pulling away from a standstill, Flex Start Control lowers the vehicle speed at which torque converter lock-up is possible from 15 to just 10 kilometres per hour. This minimizes torque waste, producing optimum acceleration from lower engine revs for improved fuel economy.</p>

<p>When coasting and under deceleration, Lock-up Slip Control enhances freewheeling efficiency through an expansion of fuel shut off duration. When the vehicle is stationary in D-mode, a neutral control will temporally disengage the transmission from the engine to minimise idling fuel consumption.</p>

<p>The CVT's Speed Ratio Control incorporates a number of systems to not only further improve fuel efficiency but also enhance the driving experience. Uphill/downhill shift control uses information from various vehicle sensors to determine whether the Yaris is travelling up- or downhill. When travelling uphill, speed ratio changes are restricted to achieve smooth operation. If brake pedal use is detected when travelling downhill, the speed ratio is automatically changed to provide appropriate engine braking force.</p>

<p>Engaging the Multidrive S Sport mode brings a closer alignment of engine and vehicle speeds, giving a more linear feel to acceleration in the manner of a conventional manual transmission. The Sport mode enhances acceleration performance and awards the driver a more dynamic driving experience.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Stop & Start system</strong>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Yaris models fitted with the 1.33 litre Dual VVT-i petrol engine may be equipped with an improved version of Toyota's Stop & Start system. The system may be used in conjunction with the optional Multidrive S transmission, delivering fuel consumption of 5.0 l/100km and CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions of only 114 g/km.</p>

<p>Featuring an immediate restart with virtually no engine sound or vibration, the system delivers significant reductions on CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions during urban driving, and can lower fuel consumption by up to 10%, depending on driving conditions.</p>

<p>Stop & Start automatically stops the engine when the car is stationary, and the clutch pedal &mdash;or brake pedal in the case of Multidrive S- is pressed. The engine will automatically restart, within less than half a second, when the same pedal is released.</p>

<p>The system's rapid restart is made possible through the use of the world's first permanently engaged gear mechanism in which the starter motor and flywheel are linked, via a ring gear, by a one way clutch. This high power, maintenance-free system reduces engine start noise levels within the cabin, and seat vibration levels.</p>

<p>A back-up boost converter is incorporated to protect the audio system, meters and ECUs (Electronic Control Units) from a voltage drop caused by the electrical load of the starter motor. The converter boosts the voltage supplied to accessories in compensation for the power consumed by the starter motor.</p>

<p>Now able to function in outside temperatures as low as -15˚C, Toyota's Stop & Start technology also allows for the continued operation of the air-conditioning system. With the air-conditioning in use, the engine will not stop if the desired cabin temperature has not been reached. When that temperature has been reached, the air-conditioner will switch to 'ECO-run', allowing the engine to stop.</p>

<p>The Yaris' improved Stop & Start system has been optimised to allow the engine to remain off for up to half a minute longer than that of its predecessor, even with the air conditioning running. The engine will automatically restart in the event of low battery charge, or if the vehicle begins to move, in the interests of safety.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>1.4 Litre D-4D diesel engine</strong></p>

<p>The 1.4-litre D-4D common rail, intercooled turbodiesel employs the latest piezo-electric technology and is equipped, as standard, with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, it generates 66 kW / 90 DIN hp at 3,800 rpm and maximum torque of 205 Nm at 1,800-2,800 rpm.</p>

<p>Benefiting from high injection pressure of 160 MPa, the piezo-electric injectors can supply larger, more precise volumes of diesel at twice the speed of conventional fuel injectors. Because of their high operating speed, they can deliver multiple injections per combustion cycle, optimising the combustion process for responsive performance, enhanced fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.</p>

<p>The latest version of this durable, reliable diesel engine is equipped with a two-stage oil pressure control system and an LLC (Long-Life Coolant) by-pass system to reduce circulation flow rate under cold conditions, improving warm-up performance and, hence, fuel efficiency. As a result, fuel economy has been lowered by 7% to only 3.9 l/100 km, and CO2 emissions have reduced by 6% to just 103 g/km.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>MultiMode transmission</strong>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Available as an option on 1.4 D-4D diesel versions of the new Yaris, MultiMode is an automated manual transmission with a fully automatic shift mode and no clutch pedal. It offers the driver a choice of two, fully automatic gear change modes or a manual, sequential gear change with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles. When equipped with MultiMode transmission, the 1.4 D-4D Yaris returns fuel consumption of 4.0 l/100km and generates CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions of 105 g/km.</p>

<p>Selecting E (Easy), M (Manual) or R (Reverse) allows the car to 'creep' in the manner of a conventional automatic. In E mode, the car makes automatic gear shifts that will maximise fuel economy. Selecting ES (Easy Sport) mode will delay changing up to a higher rpm, giving a more sporting style of drive.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Eco Driving and Gear Shift Indicators</strong></p>

<p>An Eco Driving Indicator is included in the instrument binnacle of Yaris models equipped with Multidrive S transmission, helping drivers to realise an eco-friendly, low emission-style of motoring. Under Eco driving, the Eco Driving Indicator light will illuminate during accelerator operation in the most fuel efficient zone. When the use of the accelerator exceeds this zone, the Eco light goes out.</p>

<p>On manual models, a Gear Shift Indicator prompts the Yaris driver to shift up or down a gear for maximum fuel efficiency. Monitoring driving conditions, vehicle speed and throttle inputs, the system can help reduce fuel consumption by 0.5-3.0%, depending on driving styles.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[toyota news,2011 yaris]]></category>

<p>Full hybrid technology is unique in being able to achieve these results whilst delivering 100 DIN hp and without requiring the customer to compromise on comfort features such as air-conditioning and automatic transmission, which come as standard with Yaris Hybrid.</p>

<p>It also helps Yaris Hybrid deliver significant levels of zero-emissions operation. The powertrain is optimised to operate in the most efficient mode, eliminating the need for the petrol engine as often as possible.</p>

<p>Toyota's own evaluations illustrate the potential. Taking data from a variety of journey types, it can be seen that the cumulative effect of the full hybrid powertrain leads to high proportions of zero-emissions operation. The sample data in appendix shows an average of 66% of the time and 58% of the distance in the case of 3 journeys undertaken.</p>

<p>Widely accessible pricing will ensure Yaris Hybrid starts the revolution. Pricing across European markets will be in line with, or below, competitor's diesel-engined products, making full hybrid technology available to its largest audience yet.</p>

<p>Pre-sales activity will start in March, with cars appearing in showrooms from the end of May.</p>

<p>Finally, also making its European debut at Geneva, the TOYOTA diji concept offers the ultimate in personalisation. Messages and information can be displayed with the same ease as downloading an app. Moreover, the TOYOTA diji can form a link with surrounding vehicles and infrastructure to offer a truly connected driving experience.</p>

<p>Extensive efforts in research and development means the full hybrid offering keeps true to the original principles of the Yaris: Small Outside, Big Inside.</p>

<p>Yaris Hybrid features the latest advances in HSD technology through downsizing of key hybrid components. For instance, the newly developed 1.5-litre Atkinson Cycle petrol engine is 16.5 kg lighter and 10% more compact than the 1.8-litre unit found in the Auris Hybrid. The smaller, lighter hybrid powertrain helps Toyota's engineers to preserve the interior and boot space of the conventional model.</p>

<p>The new powertrain also promises to offer B-segment customers class leading CO<sub>2</sub>, NOx and particulate emissions, minimised fuel consumption and low cost of ownership benefits overall.</p>

<p>Other key HSD components such as the electric motor, the Power Control Unit (PCU) and the transaxle also underwent weight and size reduction. The electric motor is now 20% more compact while the PCU is 12% smaller than the unit equipped in the Auris Hybrid. Toyota's engineers also shortened the transaxle by 6%, while shedding 11 kg of weight.</p>

<p>Special attention was given to the placement and size of the Nickel Metal Hydride battery and fuel tank to maintain cabin roominess for rear seat passengers and boot space. <p>It combines the ingenious packaging and urban agility of the Yaris model range with the unique driving experience and efficiency of Toyota's full hybrid powertrain, Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD). The new Yaris Hybrid launch marks a new, major step in the company's full hybrid roll-out strategy to Toyota core models in Europe.</p>

<p>The Yaris is Toyota's best-selling core model, with the largest &tilde;Unit in Operational&trade; fleet on European roads. Following the launch of the Auris Hybrid back in 2010, the Yaris Hybrid is Toyota's second core model to feature Full Hybrid technology, and brings this remarkable powertrain to the biggest volume segment in Europe.</p>

<p>The new flagship of the Yaris model range, the Yaris Hybrid features an exclusive, aerodynamically efficient exterior design. Featuring the new design face of the Toyota brand, it combines a new, more assertive Under Priority trapezoid opening frontal design element with the Keen Look design implemented on the front lamps.</p>

<p>The Yaris Hybrid features the first downsizing of Toyota's HSD powertrain. Combining a new, 1.5 litre petrol engine with a lighter, more compact electric motor, transaxle, inverter and battery pack, the new system is 20% lighter than that of an Auris Hybrid.</p>

<p>Thanks to the reduction in size of every key HSD component and both fuel tank and battery installed under the rear seat, the Yaris Hybrid features an identical occupant space and the same 286 litre luggage capacity to that of the conventional models.</p>

<p>The Yaris Hybrid's highly efficient, 74 kW/100 DIN hp powertrain will offer a leading balance of performance and CO<sub>2</sub> emissions in the B-segment, whilst allowing customers to frequently drive in modes that emit zero NOx, PM and CO<sub>2</sub> emissions.</p>

<p>With air conditioning and automatic transmission installed as standard, this high level of efficiency does not mean that customers have to compromise on comfort to achieve class-leading emissions.</p>

<p>Combining striking design, urban agility, functionality and segment-best packaging with the innovation, efficiency and environmental credentials of Toyota's full hybrid technology, it represents the most advanced Yaris yet by Toyota.</p>

]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>The new Yaris Hybrid introduces the first downsizing of Toyota's proven Hybrid Synergy Drive&reg; (HSD) technology. It represents a significant engineering breakthrough in the packaging of the full hybrid powertrain.</p>

<p>The new powertrain has been optimised for installation within the vehicle's compact, extremely efficient packaging design, without detriment to either system quality and performance, or passenger accommodation and load space.</p>

<p>Every key HSD component has been reduced in size and weight, and both the fuel tank and battery are installed under the rear seat. As a result, the Yaris Hybrid maintains identical occupant space and the same 286 litre luggage capacity as that of the standard model.</p>

<p>The downsized full hybrid system combines a 1.5 litre petrol engine unit with a lighter, more compact electric motor, transaxle, inverter and battery pack. The total system weight is 201 kg, 20% (42 kg) less than that of an Auris Hybrid.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Compact, Lower Displacement Petrol Engine</strong></p>

<p>The 1,497 cc, 16 valve, DOHC Atkinson Cycle petrol engine with VVT-i is based on the engine block of the second generation Prius, but has been completely re-engineered. It is 50 mm shorter and 17 kg lighter than the 1.8 litre unit of existing Toyota full hybrid powertrains, equating to a 10% reduction in length and a 17% reduction in weight.</p>

<p>The new engine generates a maximum 55 kW/74 DIN hp at 4,800 rpm and maximum torque of 111 Nm from 3,600 to 4,400 rpm. With a focus on lower emissions and the minimisation of mechanical friction for improved fuel efficiency, some 70% of all engine components are either new or redesigned.</p>

<p>Overall, the thermal efficiency of the Yaris Hybrid petrol engine has been improved by 6% over that of the second generation Prius, contributing to improvements in both fuel efficiency and environmental performance.</p>

<p>Newly adopted engine technologies include a cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, an electric water pump, the elimination of the auxiliary drive belt, a low-friction timing chain, a lightweight, resin-based intake manifold and a compact exhaust manifold.</p>

<p>When used in combined with a cooled EGR system, the Atkinson cycle engine offers significant gains in fuel efficiency and the reduction of emissions.</p>

<p>In the Atkinson cycle, compression and expansion are asymmetrical, and the inlet valves close late, delaying compression. This creates a high expansion ratio for less compression, converting combustion energy to engine power more effectively. As a result, the exhaust temperature is lower than that of conventional engines. The cooled EGR system reintroduces cooled exhaust gas into the intake system, further reducing engine operating temperatures.</p>

<p>Allied to a small, lightweight, multi-function radiator, the adoption of an electric water pump both enhances engine warm-up performance and reduces cooling friction loss, improving fuel efficiency. The elimination of a mechanical pump drive belt reduces friction, further improving fuel economy.</p>

<p>A new, more compact, hybrid-exclusive resin-based intake manifold combines light weight with improved quietness through the reduction of both vibration and noise. And the use of highly efficient, 12-hole atomizing fuel injectors reduces both fuel consumption and emissions.</p>

<p>The exhaust system features a new, low heat capacity, maniverter-type exhaust manifold. By positioning the catalytic converter much closer to the engine exhaust port, it decreases the catalyser warm-up time by 24% and contributes to a marked improvement in emissions during shorter journeys.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Downsized Hybrid Transaxle</strong></p>

<p>Housing the electric motor, generator, power split device and double-motor reduction mechanism in one lightweight, highly compact transmission casing directly comparable in size to that of a conventional gearbox, a new transaxle lies at the heart of the Hybrid Synergy Drive&reg; system.</p>

<p>The use of a smaller E-CVT electric continuously variable transmission and a more compact electric motor effects a 6% reduction in the length of the Yaris Hybrid's hybrid transaxle and an 11 kg weight saving over that of the Auris Hybrid, creating the most compact hybrid transmission yet engineered by Toyota.</p>

<p>Generating an immediate maximum of 45 kW and 169 Nm torque during acceleration, the new electric motor has been made smaller and lighter through the optimisation of the magnet material, and the winding of the coils with flat, rather than round, wire. The motor cooling structure has also been improved, allowing for a smaller, yet more efficient and powerful motor.</p>

<p>The transaxle now incorporates a multifunctional motor reduction gear within the power division mechanism, and a new gear deceleration mechanism abolishes the use of chains.</p>

<p>Gear tooth grinding and shaving technology similar to that used on the Auris Hybrid effects a notable reduction in transmission noise and vibration. This is further lowered by the adoption of a newly designed torsional vibration damper. Its smaller diameter made possible by the use of a three spring structure. The new, lightweight damper helps suppress the transmission of engine vibrations to a minimum level.</p>

<p>The optimisation of lubrication both improves transaxle efficiency and minimises energy losses. A new lubrication mechanism is adopted, in which each gear and bearing is lubricated by combing up the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) with the rotation of the final driven gear and counter driven gear, reducing driving force losses.</p>

<p>The use of a split construction oil catch tank which supplies oil for both the motor/generator and gear lubrication lowers the dynamic oil level, reducing agitation losses.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>More Compact Hybrid Battery</strong></p>

<p>The new, downsized full hybrid powertrain also features a smaller, 144 V nickel-metal hydride battery with a more efficient vehicle electric power management system.</p>

<p>The number of cells has been reduced from the 168 of the current, Auris Hybrid battery to only 120, composed of 20 modules connected in series. This effects a decrease in volume of 20% and a weight saving of 11 kg, allowing for the installation of the new battery entirely under the rear passenger seats, with no intrusion into the cargo loadspace.</p>

<p>In addition to this reduction in size and weight, battery charging efficiency has been improved, and the pack state-of-charge recovery time has been decreased by 67% compared to that of the Auris Hybrid.</p>

<p><strong>New Power Control Unit with Smaller Inverter and Converter</strong></p>

<p>Due to a reduction in hybrid system current and voltage, the system's Power Control Unit has also been made smaller and lighter through the development of a more compact inverter and switching unit.</p>

<p>Smaller and lighter than that fitted to the Auris Hybrid, the new inverter features a newly structured capacitor, reduced energy losses and improved cooling, enhancing fuel efficiency.</p>

<p>By optimising the layout of internal components, the size and weight of the DC-DC converter have also been reduced. And the composition of the noise filter has been revised to enhance unit quietness.</p>

<p>Compared to the Auris Hybrid, unit output current has been reduced from 120 to 80 A and output voltage lowered from 650 to 520 V, saving system energy with no loss of performance or efficiency.</p>

<p><strong>Hybrid System Performance</strong></p>

<p>Combining the power of a 55 kW petrol engine and battery powering the electrical motor, the Yaris Hybrid's highly efficient powertrain generates a maximum 74 kW/100 DIN hp system output. It offers the best balance of performance and fuel consumption/CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions in the B segment.</p>

<p>The Yaris Hybrid will accelerate seamlessly from 0-100 km/h in 11.8 seconds, and on to a maximum speed of 165 km/h. Conversely, it delivers an average fuel consumption of just 3.5 l/100 km and segment-best CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions of only 79 g/km, whilst allowing customers frequent driving in modes that emit zero NO<sub>x</sub>, PM or CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions. Its exceptional fuel efficiency gives the Yaris Hybrid a driving range of 1,000 km on a single tank of fuel.</p>

<p><strong>Hybrid Synergy Drive in Operation</strong></p>

<p>Over the course of any journey, Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive&reg; system operates in several different modes to maximise the Yaris Hybrid's' overall efficiency. At rest, the engine stops automatically to save fuel. Under operating conditions of low engine efficiency such as start up and low to mid-range speeds, the vehicle runs on the electric motor alone, thus eradicating CO<sub>2</sub>, NO<sub>x</sub>&nbsp;and PM emissions.</p>

<p>Under normal driving conditions, power allocation is constantly adjusted between engine and electric motor to combine optimum performance with maximum fuel efficiency.</p>

<p>Via an Electronically Controlled Braking system, the electric motor acts as a high-output generator during deceleration and under braking to effect regenerative braking, optimising energy management in the Hybrid Synergy Drive&reg; system by recovering kinetic energy (normally wasted as heat under braking and deceleration) as electrical energy for storage in the high performance battery.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[toyota news,2011 yaris]]></category>

<p>The new Yaris Hybrid range offers customers outstanding value for money, even without the low-CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;incentives and tax benefits that are available in many markets. It combines an extremely generous standard equipment specification with the added value of Toyota's unique, full hybrid powertrain driving experience.</p>

<p>The Active grade is fitted, as standard, with a smooth E-CVT transmission ideal for the urban environment. An all-electric EV driving mode, a Stop and Start system and a Hill Hold Assist function further reinforce the ease, simplicity and relaxation of the full hybrid powertrain driving style.</p>

<p>Steering wheel-mounted audio and Bluetooth switchgear, front power windows, LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL), driver's seat height adjustment, hybrid-blue stitching to the upholstery, dual zone automatic air conditioning and the Toyota Touch on-board multimedia system are also fitted as standard from the Active grade.</p>

<p>Toyota Touch is a 6.1 inch, full colour, touch screen interface which represents an affordable approach to on-board multimedia systems. It incorporates an AM/FM radio, a CD/MP3 player, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity with a music streaming facility and automatic phonebook synchronisation at each connection.</p>

<p>A USB port allows for the connection of portable music players, with the facility to display iTunes album cover art. In addition, the system incorporates a rear view camera. The image is displayed on the full-colour screen when reverse gear is engaged, to assist with parking manoeuvres.</p>

<p>Specific to the Yaris Hybrid, Toyota Touch also incorporates a Hybrid Energy Monitor which displays the real-time energy flow within the Hybrid Synergy Drive system. Vehicle information displays include remaining fuel range, instant fuel consumption, average fuel consumption per minute over the last 15 minutes and time elapsed since last engine start. The system is available in seven languages - French, English, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Russian.</p>

<p>To the comprehensive standard equipment of the Active grade, the Style grade adds front fog lamps with chrome ring surrounds, smart entry with push start, front armrest and 16'' alloy wheels.</p>

<p>Optional equipment for both Active and Style grades includes privacy glass, an 8-speaker premium sound system, cruise control and a full length panoramic sunroof.</p>

<p>The Yaris Hybrid is equipped, as standard, with seven airbags, an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Corner Stability Control, (CSC), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), offering customers the highest levels of safety. <p><strong>Toyota Touch & Go</strong></p>

<p>Building on Toyota Touch, Toyota Touch & Go equips the new Yaris Hybrid with the best value for money navigation system on the market.</p>

<p>The system includes all the most popular navigation functions, such as advanced traffic coverage, customisable speed limits, speed camera warnings and motorway signposting. It not only offers drivers a choice of the fastest or shortest route to their destination, but also the one with the smallest environmental impact - an 'Ecological' route option.</p>

<p>Using a compatible mobile phone, via Bluetooth, the system offers on-board connectivity to a Google Local Search function &mdash;the largest and most up-to-date search database in the world. Via Google Maps, destinations may be input remotely from home or office, and Points of Interest may be downloaded for entry as destinations.</p>

<p>The installation of Touch & Go also upgrades the multimedia base unit with the addition of an SMS on-screen send/receive function incorporating a contact person image display, and a USB-based photo viewing function.</p>

<p>It combines a new, more aggressive, Under Priority frontal design element - the distinctive new Toyota face design execution, with a Keen Look detailing reinforced by hybrid-specific LED lights.</p>

<p>Flanked by aerodynamically efficient front aero corner treatments, the strong centre section of the lower bumper houses a larger, trapezoidal lower grille optimising engine bay cooling whilst emphasise the new hybrid's ground-hugging stance and low centre of gravity.</p>

<p>A slimmer upper grille, elegantly sculpted to highlight the hybrid-blue Toyota badge, is flanked by slim, Keen Look headlights which emphasise the new hybrid's bold, horizontal front styling. Exclusive to the Yaris Hybrid, the projector-type headlamp unit features standard chrome-plated 'eyebrows' lipped with an LED 'lightguide', and LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL).</p>

<p>In profile, identified by hybrid badging and exclusive wheel designs, the new hybrid shares the stylish, cab-forward silhouette and long wheelbase profile of the standard Yaris. The exterior overall length is only 20 mm longer than the standard Yaris.</p>

<p>To the rear, the hybrid-blue badged tailgate incorporates a new, LED-type high mounted stop light, and clear lens combination lights incorporate a LED tail and stop lamp signature unique to the new Yaris Hybrid.</p>

<p>The Yaris Hybrid is available with a choice of unique 15" and 16" aerodynamic wheels, and a range of eight body colours including a model-specific new Pearl White finish execution.</p>

<p>Toyota pioneered this Pearl White finish, which has required the introduction of a bespoke production process at the TMMF plant where the new hybrid is built. Reinforcing the Yaris Hybrid's uniquely stylish and environmentally-conscientious design credentials, the new colour delivers a cool, high quality image (particularly in sunlight) when the soft, silken lustre of pearl is at its strongest.</p>

<p>On board, Yaris Hybrid customers benefit from a driver-focused cockpit with hybrid-exclusive details and trim finishes.</p>

<p>Silver ring-trimmed three dimensional instrument dials incorporate a hybrid system indicator and feature a combination of white and blue backlighting. The centre console-mounted Toyota Touch system incorporates a hybrid energy monitor illuminated in blue as well as the dual zone air-conditioning.</p>

<p>The dashboard soft-touch pads and front door trims are finished in an exclusive, Ice Grey colour, and blue stitching trims the leather upholstery, steering wheel and hand brake. <p>The Yaris is Toyota's best-selling core model in Europe, with more than 2.5 million units sold. It is the only B-segment car to offer customers the choice of 3 different powertrain types &mdash; full hybrid, diesel or petrol.</p>

<p>Combining the ingenious packaging and urban agility of the Yaris model range with the unique driving experience and efficiency of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive&reg; (HSD), the Yaris Hybrid is a new major step in the company's full hybrid European roll-out strategy.</p>

<p>With low fuel consumption, low environmental impact, strong acceleration, great manoeuvrability and unique EV capabilities, it represents the ultimate urban car.</p>

<p>The new powertrain has been optimised for installation within the vehicle's compact, extremely efficient packaging design, without detriment to either system quality and performance, or passenger accommodation and loadspace. The downsized hybrid system combines a substantially re-engineered 1.5 litre petrol engine with a lighter, more compact electric motor, transaxle, inverter and battery pack.</p>

<p>The highly efficient powertrain offers the best balance of performance and fuel consumption/CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions in the B segment. It delivers an average fuel consumption of just 3.5 l/100 km and segment-best CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions of only 79 g/km, whilst allowing customers frequent, all-electric driving periods that emit no NO<sub>x</sub>, PM or CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions.</p>

<p>With segment-best fuel consumption of 3.1 l/100 km in the urban cycle, the Yaris Hybrid represents the ideal urban mobility choice at a time when fuel prices are reaching peak levels. Internal test data show that a high proportion of journey time and distance can be undertaken with the engine off, representing significant benefits in fuel consumption.</p>

<p>Expected to represent 20% of all Yaris model sales in Europe, the Yaris Hybrid is not a niche model. Rather, it represents a new, unique alternative for demanding urban drivers who expect a new driving and ownership experience from their car.</p>

<p>The Yaris Hybrid combines the tangible benefits of advanced technology, low emissions and unbeatable cost of ownership with a new, uniquely relaxed and quiet driving style. ]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>Originally conceived as a highly compact plant -with limited parts stock and an optimised production line layout contributing to a notably streamlined manufacturing process- Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (TMMF) has been building the Yaris for over a decade.</p>

<p>The Yaris has already established a reputation for outstanding levels of Quality, Durability and Reliability. With the addition of further derivatives including the new Yaris Hybrid, TMMF remains committed to delivering vehicles with the highest levels of built-in quality in the B-segment.</p>

<p>Yaris Hybrid manufacturing has introduced further complexity and new challenges to the assembly process, and increased the range of Yaris models produced on the same line to a record high of 62 varieties at TMMF.</p>

<p>On average, each Yaris requires the assembly of over 2,600 parts, with around 80% of total parts common to the standard Yaris and the Yaris Hybrid. However, there are 400 new, hybrid-specific components, and 40% of all assembly processes for the Yaris Hybrid are either new, or required adaptation. Because of the plant's very compact size, stock management has had to be further optimised, and sequenced delivery organised for a larger number of parts.</p>

<p>Over 4,000 hours of Yaris Hybrid assembly training was provided to TMMF members, with a focus on three key areas: assembly techniques for new on-line parts, part variety recognition amongst components of a similar kind, and the meeting of key quality targets. Specific attention was paid to the inverter assembly, this component being highly sensitive to dust and body intrusion.</p>

<p>Specific safety training in how to handle high voltage parts was provided to some 50 plant members, and new safety procedures resultant from the silent running of vehicles in EV drive mode established. In addition, a new, hybrid-specific, high quality pearl white paint finish was introduced at TMMF for the first time.</p>

<p>Despite these changes, and additional logistic complexities such as sequencing delivery of a higher number of parts, the continuous Kaizen and production line streamlining inherent in the principles of the Toyota Production System have meant that, overall, the Yaris Hybrid takes not much longer to produce than the standard Yaris.</p>

<p>Befitting the Yaris Hybrid's environmental credentials, the TMMF plant itself has seen the recent implementation of numerous environmental initiatives to minimise waste and lower power and water consumption.</p>

<p>Waste production has been reduced by 34% over the last 10 years, and since 2007, 100% of waste is recycled or recovered.</p>

<p>Through Toyota's continuous improvement activities, the plant has also achieved average savings per car of 27% in energy, 67% in water and 48% in VOC (the volatile organic compounds produced through solvent usage) over the same period.</p>

<p>In 2011, 60% of the plant's total water needs were covered by either rainwater &mdash; collected in a specific 6,200 m3 basin, or by recycling used water from production processes at an in-house waste water treatment station.</p>

<p>A 1,020 m2 photovoltaic membrane has been installed on the plant roof, providing half of the electricity needed for the administration building. And the press shop incorporates a 400 m2 solar wall, pre-heating the outside air to save on heating energy and CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions.</p>

<p>Dispensing with the need for packaging materials, all car components are delivered from suppliers to the plant in 400,000 reusable plastic boxes, reused for over 10 years.</p>

<p>With TMUK already assembling the full hybrid Auris, the start of Yaris Hybrid production at TMMF makes Toyota the only manufacturer to have two full hybrid technology production facilities in Europe, reinforcing the company's commitment to local manufacturing of high technology vehicles.</p>

<p>The plant currently manufactures around 1,000 cars a day, corresponding to one new Yaris driving out of the line every 68 seconds. TMMF expects to produce around 200,000 vehicles in 2012, of which 25% hybrid.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[toyota news,2011 yaris]]></category>

<p>The Yaris Hybrid is competitively priced in the segment, comparing particularly favourably against diesel powered vehicles. However, customer convenience is not compromised, with features such as dual auto-air-conditioning, automatic transmission, full electric drive and stop and start fitted as standard across the model range.</p>

<p>Best-in-class CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions of 79 gr/km combined with superior fuel efficiency offer customers exceptionally low running costs and, in many countries, significant tax incentives or benefits.</p>

<p>The Toyota full hybrid consumes only 3.5 l/100 km over the European homologation combined cycle, allowing customers to drive up to 1,000 km on a single tank of fuel. At just 3.1 l/100 km, the urban cycle homologation fuel consumption is the lowest in the segment, contributing to further city driving fuel savings.</p>

<p>The Hybrid Synergy Drive&reg; system has been specifically designed for low maintenance and outstanding durability. The powertrain has been designed with no requirement for the clutch, starter motor, alternator belt and timing belt traditionally used in other vehicles. With no need to either service or replace these parts, customers can realise a saving of around 1,5001 Euro over 100,000 km.</p>

<p>And, thanks to the efficiency of the Yaris Hybrid's Electronically Controlled Braking system (ECB), the brake pads life expectancy can reach 100,000 km.</p>

<p>Combining this component longevity with reduced labour times during servicing, Yaris Hybrid maintenance costs over 100,000 km are expected to be amongst the lowest in the B segment, realising an additional saving of around 1,000 Euro.</p>

<p>Rigorously assessed for performance and durability, and backed up by over 14 years of in-service experience, the full hybrid battery is designed to last the entire life of the car.</p>

<p>The new Yaris Hybrid benefits from a three year/100,000 km warranty, extended to five years/100,000 km on hybrid system components. Warranty data from the Prius and Auris Hybrid has already confirmed the outstanding reliability of the Hybrid Synergy Drive&reg; powertrain.</p>

<p>Hybrid reliability has also been confirmed by the Prius' consistent high ranking in both the JD Power 'Lowest Problems' survey and the T&uuml;V quality report.</p>

<p>Initial residual value forecasts for a 3-year period and 60,000 km already award the Yaris Hybrid best-in-class status in Germany (51%) and UK (41%). <p><strong>Full Hybrid in operation</strong></p>

<p>Recent real world tests with Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain reveal that the Yaris Hybrid zero emissions driving accounts for around 66% of the average commuter journey length and around 58% of the total journey time, with the petrol engine being switched off.</p>

<p>The electric motor's ability to deliver maximum torque from the vehicle acceleration start provides significant benefits during the stop/start driving of urban traffic conditions, combining brisk acceleration from a standstill in near silence with class-leading acceleration under full throttle of 0-50 km/h in only 4 seconds.</p>

<p>The new Yaris Hybrid's seamless, E-CVT electric continuously variable transmission benefits from a new control system to create a more progressive engine rpm increase during vehicle acceleration. Optimised at 70-90% throttle opening, the new system suppresses excessive increases in engine rpm under acceleration, offering drivers a more natural-feeling, linear relationship between vehicle and engine speeds.</p>

<p>Supplementing this enhanced E-CVT transmission, two alternative 'on-demand' drive modes may be selected to further increase driving efficiency, performance and fuel economy.</p>

<p>From start-up and at speeds up to 50 km/h the new Yaris Hybrid automatically operates in EV mode, driving under electric motor power alone. The driver may also select EV mode manually. This unique driving mode is only available to drivers of full hybrid vehicles.</p>

<p>With vehicle range dictated by battery charge, the EV drive mode allows for urban driving with minimal noise and zero CO<sub>2</sub>, NO<sub>x</sub>&nbsp;and PM emissions for up to two kilometres. Because the petrol engine is switched off throughout its operation, the EV drive mode contributes to a significant reduction in the Yaris Hybrid's overall fuel consumption.</p>

<p>In ECO mode, throttle response to aggressive accelerator pedal inputs is reduced and air-conditioning control optimized for improved fuel economy. Depending on driving conditions, the ECO mode can help drivers achieve about 10% reduction in fuel consumption versus the normal mode.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Optimum Weight Distribution for Balanced Driveability</strong>&nbsp;</p>

<p>The extensive use of high-tensile steel within the new Yaris Hybrid's construction not only saves weight, but also offers greater bodyshell rigidity for handling stability. Some 50% by weight of the body is formed in high-tensile steel, allowing for weight reduction with no loss of torsional stiffness.</p>

<p>With an unchanged 2,510 mm length wheelbase, the front overhang has been increased by just 20 mm to accommodate the downsized full hybrid powertrain. With both the fuel tank and the new, more compact hybrid battery located well within the vehicle wheelbase and as low as possible, the new Yaris Hybrid combines a particularly low, 550 mm centre of gravity with 63:37 front/rear weight distribution to deliver well-balanced driveability.</p>

<p><strong>Enhanced Aerodynamics for Class-leading Drag Coefficient</strong></p>

<p>Aerodynamic efficiency is fundamental to fuel efficiency, vehicle stability and quiet running, and every element of the new Yaris Hybrid's bodywork has been styled to optimise airflow and minimise drag.</p>

<p>Sized to optimise hybrid powertrain cooling, both upper and lower front grilles have been carefully shaped to both smooth and minimise the intake of air into the engine bay.</p>

<p>The profiles of the front bumper aero corners, bonnet, steeply raked A pillar, door mirrors, roofline, rear spoiler, rear bumper aero corners, the rear combination lamps and even the wheels have all been designed to maximise the Yaris Hybrid's aerodynamic efficiency.</p>

<p>In addition, numerous underbody airflow rectification components have been adopted to create a flat surface, smoothing the flow of air under the new Yaris Hybrid. These include a front spoiler, a large engine undercover, and front, centre and rear spats. A rear undercover incorporates vertical fins which create a laminar flow effect to enhance ride stability.</p>

<p>As a result, Toyota's new full hybrid boasts a class-leading drag coefficient of just Cd 0.286.</p>

<p><strong>Agile Handling and Responsive Steering</strong></p>

<p>The new Yaris Hybrid shares the standard Yaris' proven combination of MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension. Modifications to both spring and damper rates are optimised based on the new full hybrid's weight distribution.</p>

<p>The independent, MacPherson strut front suspension shares the mass and vibration reduction measures introduced on the standard Yaris, optimising the system's road tracking performance and minimising vibration whilst delivering appropriate ride comfort, driving safety, agility and grip.</p>

<p>The rear torsion beam suspension also benefits from the mass reduction measures and system enhancements introduced on the standard Yaris, once again reducing vibration and enhancing ride comfort, while improving vehicle agility.</p>

<p>The Yaris Hybrid features a quick steering gear ratio of 56 mm/rev to deliver a better steering feel and vehicle response. The bearing rigidity of the rack and pinion gearing reduces friction and system play, further enhancing accuracy and feel. The vehicle has a class-leading turning circle of only 4.7, allowing for great manoeuvrability in congested city streets or whilst parking.</p>

<p><strong>Powerful Regenerative Braking and Low Rolling Resistance Tyres</strong></p>

<p>Incorporating Electronic Brakeforce distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist, Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), the new Yaris Hybrid is equipped with an Electronically Controlled Braking (ECB) system which coordinates the control of both hydraulic and regenerative braking.</p>

<p>The new full hybrid is fitted with ventilated disc brakes to the front and solid, discs to the rear for powerful, progressive and well balanced braking efficiency.</p>

<p>Coordinated control of the hydraulic and regenerative braking systems maximises the regeneration of energy by the electric motor during deceleration and under braking.</p>

<p>Over the last decade, the Yaris has consistently been a strong contributor to the increase in Toyota sales throughout Europe, boosting the brand image and becoming a key pillar of the company's European manufacturing operations.</p>

<p>The new Yaris will compete in the B-segment which -with a 26% share of the total market, equating to some 4 million sales per annum- remains the most important sales arena of the European automotive market. This segment is currently dominated by petrol-engined vehicles, which represent more than two thirds of the mix.</p>

<p>Over the last few years, fragmentation has accelerated within the B-segment, due to the introduction of an increasing diversity of new model types such as the SUV and MPV. Nonetheless, representing 50% of total sales, the hatchback remains the segment's most important bodystyle.</p>

<p>With the continued increase in fuel costs and CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;taxation levels instigating downsizing by customers from other segments, B-segment sales are expected to remain stable in the immediate future.</p>

<p>Praised for its interior roominess, durability, versatility, engine efficiency and ease of driving in the urban environment, the second generation Yaris has played a significant role in Toyota's overall European performance, with sales peaking at 270,000 units per annum.</p>

<p>The new Yaris will consolidate all the strengths of the previous generation vehicle, while offering a more dynamic and sophisticated design execution. It builds on the clever packaging DNA of its predecessors with an even more spacious and practical interior, a clear step-up in sensory quality and a segment breakthrough in affordable multimedia connectivity.</p>

<p>Its fuel-efficient, low emission powertrains and innovative transmissions combine with revised suspension and Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems to offer customers the ideal balance of comfort and the greater agility essential to urban driving.</p>

<p>Quality will remain a key Yaris attribute. Further increasing the built-in quality recently praised in the German 2011 T&uuml;V* report, Toyota Motor Manufacturing France's close involvement with suppliers from the very earliest stages of production will ensure that every component contributes to the overall quality of the vehicle.</p>

<p>Since the European launch of the first Yaris in 1999, each successive generation of the car has been developed in accordance with the key concept: "compact outside while roomy inside". The Yaris quickly became nicknamed Piccolo Genio (Little Genius) &mdash; a testament to the first two generations of a car which, despite an increasingly crowded segment, has consistently set new standards in packaging ingenuity.</p>

<p>The third generation Yaris inherits all the clever packaging DNA of these previous generations, while the exterior showcases the greater appeal of a bolder, more dynamic and elegant design execution befitting a European compact car.</p>

<p><strong>Packaging &mdash; minimal increase in bodyshell size</strong></p>

<p>Overall vehicle length is now 3,885 mm, a limited increase of just 100 mm. With an average car length of 4 meters in the B-segment, the new Yaris remains one of the most compact vehicles in its class. This is reflected in a class-leading turning circle of just 4.7* metres, which makes Toyota's new compact hatchback particularly manoeuvrable in the urban environment.</p>

<p>The width of the new Yaris remains the same, while the wheelbase has been extended by 50 mm. Its height has decreased by 20 mm, giving the car a lower centre of gravity and a more sporting stance. Within its well proportioned form, the design's short front and rear overhangs &mdash; increased by only 35 mm and 15 mm respectively- and prominent wheel arches express stability, agility and dynamism.</p>

<p><strong>Styling &mdash; the new face of the next generation Toyota family</strong></p>

<p>The bold frontal treatment identifies the Yaris as the first vehicle to feature the distinctive new face of the next generation Toyota family. Key to the new frontal styling is a change in the proportions of the upper and lower grilles, with the emphasis now placed on enlarging the latter for a more assertive, masculine look.</p>

<p>Elegantly sculpted to highlight the Toyota badge, a full-width concave shaped upper grille is flanked by new, 'keen'-look headlights. Their slim design incorporates dual lamps and, on some grades, smoke-plated 'eyebrows' to emphasise the new Yaris' bolder, more horizontal front styling.</p>

<p>Within the lower bumper, a strong, protruding centre section houses a large air intake to focus attention on the bottom half of the vehicle, reinforcing the Yaris' low centre of gravity and giving it a more ground-hugging appearance.</p>

<p>Whilst maintaining the model's classic 'Y' pattern graphic, these new frontal styling elements give the Yaris a bolder, more masculine appearance.</p>

<p>In profile, the dynamism of the vehicle is reinforced by the more prominent design of the steeply sloped beltline which has been a key styling cue for each generation of Yaris. The base of the A pillar has also been moved forwards to strengthen the Yaris' stylish, cab-forward silhouette.</p>

<p>Both front and rear three-quarter visibility has been improved through a larger front quarterlight and the elimination of the rear glazing division bar, the latter giving a more dynamic look to the rear glazing. Three-door models feature a thinner, forward-slanting C pillar, further increasing the rear glazing area while awarding the car an even more dynamic stance. A flowing, door cill character line and front and rear aero corner treatments further emphasise the new Yaris' low centre of gravity and elegant, long wheelbase profile.</p>

<p>To the rear, the detailing of the lamp clusters, top-hinged tailgate inset into the bumper and lower bumper treatment are visually interlinked, once again maintaining the model's classic, "Y" pattern graphic.</p>

<p>The smooth flow of the beltline round the rear shoulders, the extended lower bumper and the Coke bottle silhouette combine to give the vehicle a wider more stable stance. And the higher relocation of the license plate beneath a chrome bar garnish within the tailgate brings a more premium quality image to the design execution.</p>

<p>The third generation Yaris features new 15" and 16" alloy wheel designs, and will be available in a choice of 10 exterior colours. Bringing a more colourful palette to the Yaris, five colours are newly adopted by the model range, and two &mdash; Gin Buck Silver and Turquoise- are newly developed.</p>

<p><strong>Aerodynamics &mdash; class-leading drag coefficient of Cd 0.287</strong></p>

<p>Aerodynamic efficiency is fundamental to fuel efficiency, vehicle stability and quiet running, and every element of the new Yaris' bodywork has been styled to optimise airflow and minimise drag.</p>

<p>Sized to optimise powertrain cooling, both upper and lower front grilles have been carefully shaped to smooth the intake of air into the engine bay. The profiles of the front bumper aero corners, bonnet, steeply raked A pillar, door mirrors, roofline, rear spoiler, rear bumper aero corners, and even the rear combination lamps have all been designed to maximise the Yaris' aerodynamic efficiency.</p>

<p>In addition, numerous underbody airflow rectification components have been adopted to create a flat surface, smoothing the flow of air under the new Yaris. These include a front spoiler a full engine undercover front, centre and rear spats and a rear undercover which incorporates National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics-style vertical fins, creating a laminar flow effect to enhance ride stability.</p>

<p>Together, these comprehensive air flow optimisation measures significantly improve the vehicle's aerodynamic efficiency, awarding the Yaris a class-leading drag coefficient of only Cd 0.287.</p>

<p>The key interior design goal for the new Yaris was to create a more driver-focused cockpit with an intuitive layout. The driver's and front passenger's spaces are clearly divided, emphasising a new focus on the driver ergonomics. And perceptions of sensory quality throughout are enhanced through highly tactile, premium quality detailing new to the B-segment.</p>

<p>The incremental saving of space through careful detailing throughout the interior, makes the new Yaris one of the roomiest vehicles in its segment, with class-leading rear seat knee and headroom, as well as segment-best loadspace length and width.</p>

<p><strong>All-new Interior &mdash; enhanced spaciousness and improved sensory quality</strong></p>

<p>Emphasising the breadth of the cabin, the new dashboard design is 125mm wider and 40 mm lower than that of the previous model. Incorporating strong horizontal lines to create a feeling of width, the dashboard is dominated by a sculpted, soft-padded section which flows away from the driver's space into matching, upper door panel pads, heightening the sense of interior spaciousness.</p>

<p>Dashboard and door pad colour is matched to seat upholstery inserts according to the grade structure, reinforcing the high-quality feel of the interior. An overall feeling of spaciousness and light is enhanced by larger front quarterlight glazing.</p>

<p>Perceptions of sensory quality are improved through highly tactile, premium quality detailing. The driver's instruments, Multimedia touch screen and air vents are trimmed with gun metal finish, concave cross-sectioned rings. And all controls and switchgear feature chrome plated convex cross-sections.</p>

<p>Adding a sense of fun, the grain texture of the dashboard and door panels decreases in density from left to right, giving an impression of lateral expansion. And the speaker grilles are finished in a unique bubble motif.</p>

<p>The spaciousness and high sensory quality of the all-new interior is further reinforced through the Yaris' large, all-glass panoramic sunroof. The structure is separated into front and rear sections allowing more flexibility for front and rear occupant to open or close, each fitted with a 20% light transmittance roller shade.</p>

<p><strong>Driver-focused cockpit &mdash; improved adjustability and ergonomic excellence</strong></p>

<p>Unlike previous Yaris generations, the instrument binnacle is now positioned central to the steering wheel. A new, easy-to-read, amber/red backlit combination meter features a large, 120 mm diameter central speedometer. All driver-focused controls and adjacent centre console switchgear are ergonomically located for high visibility with minimum eye movement, and ease of use.</p>

<p>The front seats feature an entirely new framework offering improved body-holding performance and excellent ride comfort. The seat back offers improved lateral hold at waist level, with a more open, relaxed fit at shoulder height. The width of the seat cushion has been increased and the side sections raised for improved holding. The seating surface area has been increased and the front edge of the seat cushion raised to help reduce long-distance fatigue.</p>

<p>In the interests of improved comfort, driver's seat vertical adjustability has been increased by 15 mm to a maximum 60 mm. The seat's 240 mm sliding range remains the same, but the 16, 15 mm adjustment steps have been divided into 24 smaller, 10 mm increments to help secure an ideal driving position. A driver's seat armrest is also available for greater comfort.</p>

<p>Further enhancing driver comfort, the three-spoke, stitched leather steering wheel has a new, more comfortable grip cross-section, enlarged finger rests for a more natural grip, and protrusions on the back of the rim where it connects to the spoke for enhanced grip feel. The steering column rake has been lowered by 3 degrees to 25 degrees to deliver a more engaging driving position. The wheel itself offers 30 mm rake and 40 mm reach adjustment, and features a flat bottom rim section for better knee clearance.</p>

<p><strong>Interior packaging - class-leading passenger and loadspace roominess</strong></p>

<p>Despite its compact exterior dimensions, passenger accommodation aboard the new Yaris has not been compromised. Wheelbase length has been increased by 50 mm and interior width by 30 mm. As a result, though the passenger space length within the bodyshell remains at 1,810 mm, the percentage of interior space available within the overall length of new Yaris has increased by 2% to 65%.</p>

<p>Without compromise to either comfort or safety, both front and rear seatbacks, as well as the tailgate, have been thinned to maximise roominess throughout. The Yaris' front to rear hip point couple distance of 865 mm remains one of the longest in the B-segment. These attributes increase rear passenger legroom by 35 mm to 645 mm, and rear seat knee-room by 30 mm to a class-leading 120 mm. Though the ceiling is 5 mm lower than before, there is no change in the new Yaris' segment-best rear seat headroom.</p>

<p>The front seats of three-door Yaris versions feature an easy entry, walk-in mechanism operated by a lever located on the seat shoulder. The passenger seat simultaneously tilts and slides forwards to allow ease of entry to, and egress from, the rear seats, a full memory function returning the seat to its previous position. The driver's seat mechanism incorporates a recliner memory to return the seat back to its previous angle of recline.</p>

<p>With the tailgate lock and striker mechanism significantly reduced in both size and weight to gain 96 mm in loadspace length, the overall length of the luggage compartment has been increased by 145 mm to a class-leading 710 mm. With the 60:40 split rear seats folded flat, the loadspace length has been increased by 85 mm to 1,500 mm. The loadspace width has also been increased by up to 55 mm, resulting in a segment-best maximum of 1,365 mm.</p>

<p>Overall luggage capacity within the two-tier loadspace has been increased to 286 litres, rising to 768 litres with the split rear seats folded flat. Locating the dual-position deck board on the upper level creates a 633 mm long, 1,006 mm wide and 120 mm deep concealed storage compartment. For ease of loading, the tailgate cill has been lowered by 7 mm to just 660 mm easily the lowest cill height in this class. The tailgate opening has also been widened by 20 mm for greater convenience.</p>

<p><strong>Focus on detail &mdash; for greater comfort and convenience</strong></p>

<p>Every aspect of cabin function detailing has been carefully considered to ensure ease of use and optimised occupant comfort.</p>

<p>The new Yaris features an improved door closing operation. Essential in the urban environment, a new, three step door opening mechanism incorporates 25 and 37 degree intermediate holding positions, whilst the door itself has been made easier to close, with less effort required. High grade model, keyless entry door handles now replace a black push switch with a fully integrated touch sensor mechanism.</p>

<p>A pantograph-type, single front windscreen wiper replaces the twin wipers of the outgoing model. This system improves wiping performance at high vehicle speeds, generates lower wind noise and, through a lower blade height and the use of a fin cover, improves vehicle aerodynamics. Screen-wash is dispensed along the entire length of the blade itself, reducing view obstruction during application.</p>

<p>Fully described in the Grade Structure chapter, the new Yaris may be equipped with Toyota Touch -a new approach to affordable touch screen multimedia systems, and -Toyota Touch & Go &mdash;the best value satellite navigation system on the market.</p>

<p>For the first time, the new Yaris may be equipped with dual-zone automatic air conditioning, and a ventilated glove box mirrors the climate control system settings. Cruise control is available as an option, and a Follow-Me-Home headlight function keeps the low beam lamps illuminated for between 30 and 120 seconds after the vehicle has been locked.</p>

<p>The new Yaris offers occupants the full range of storage compartments essential to everyday family use. There are six drinks holders spaced throughout the cabin (including a 1 litre bottle holder), and 13 other storage spaces, such as a ventilated glove box, secret in-dash document storage, dashboard and centre console bins and trays, front and rear door pockets and a concealed storage compartment beneath the loadspace deck board.</p>

<p><strong>NVH measures &mdash; for a quieter, stress-free interior</strong></p>

<p>The new Yaris benefits from a variety of measures designed to minimise wind, road and engine noise, resulting in a quiet cabin environment.</p>

<p>A Yaris first, a sound insulating acoustic glass windscreen featuring an inner layer of film helps reduce wind, road and engine noise. The optimal placement of air spats, the aerodynamic efficiency of new door mirrors and the new, single wiper blade further reduce wind noise.</p>

<p>Sound-insulating and sound-absorbing materials have been extensively used throughout the bodyshell and interior construction. The transmission of engine compartment noise has been reduced through the application of a high-density insulator to the bonnet, a high-density engine undercover silencer, front wing insulation and, another Yaris first, a cowl insulator.</p>

<p>A front wing protector has been fitted between the wing and the front pillar to further reduce noise transmission to the cabin. Both wheel arch insulation and a lower rocker protector reduce the sound of loose material kicked up from the road surface.</p>

<p>A sound absorbing/insulating dashboard inner silencer further diminishes engine noise within the cabin. Comprehensive cabin noise-inhibiting measures include the use of damping sheets throughout the bodyshell floor, and the application of sound-insulating and &mdash;absorbing materials to the instrument panel, centre console, transmission tunnel, door and luggage compartment trims, headlining, carpeting and loadspace floor.</p>

<p>In addition, the introduction of foam and fixed foam sound insulation materials within the A, B and C pillars as well as the door cill and head sections minimises the transmission of noise through the bodyshell.</p>

<p>Continuing the successful mix of powertrains featured in the previous generation model range, the new Yaris will be available with a choice of three engines 1.0 and 1.33 litre VVT-i petrol engines and a 1.4 litre D-4D turbodiesel.</p>

<p>The 1.33 litre petrol unit may be mated to Toyota's latest Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), Multidrive S, while an automated manual transmission, MultiMode, is available as an option on 1.4 D-4D diesel versions of the new Yaris.</p>

<p>All three engines benefit from the application of Toyota Optimal Drive, a range of engineering measures designed to maximise performance and driving enjoyment while minimising fuel consumption and CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions.</p>

<p>Toyota Optimal Drive focuses on several key aspects of powertrain development such as lightweight, compact design, enhanced combustion efficiency, low friction components and environmentally friendly technologies. This, combined with weight saving measures and aerodynamic improvements, helps lower fuel consumption and CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions without compromising power and torque levels.</p>

<p>Combining light weight and compact design with the power and torque delivery essential to urban driving, all three engines return highly competitive fuel consumption figures, generate low, tax-efficient CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions and are Euro V compliant.</p>

<p><strong>1.0 Litre VVT-i petrol engine</strong></p>

<p>A marvel of miniaturisation, Toyota's 3-cylinder, 1.0 litre VVT-i petrol engine led the trend for powertrain downsizing. To this day, it remains a reference for compact, efficient engineering. The lightest unit in its class, it has won successive Engine of the Year awards in the sub-1.0 litre category.</p>

<p>Mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, the latest version of the 998 cc unit generates 51 kW/ 69 DIN hp at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 93 Nm at 3,600 rpm. Fuel consumption has been lowered by 4% to a class-leading 4.8 l/100 km, and CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions have fallen by 7% to 110 g/km.</p>

<p>The 1.0 litre petrol engine is produced in Europe, at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland.</p>

<p><strong>1.33 Litre Dual VVT-i petrol engine</strong></p>

<p>The 1.33 litre petrol engine is equipped with dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent), Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and a remarkably high compression ratio of 11.5:1. Mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, it generates 73 kW/ 99 DIN hp at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 125 Nm at 4,000 rpm. With a smoothened torque curve, the unit combines strong dynamic performance with fuel economy of just 5.1 l/100 km and CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions of only 118 g/km, when combined with the Multidrive S transmission.</p>

<p>The engine unit is lightweight and compact, with a small bore and long stroke, resulting in a very high power-to-weight ratio. It features a resin-type cylinder head cover and intake manifold, and the intake channel has been streamlined to optimise airflow for improved combustion efficiency.</p>

<p>The adoption of camshaft roller rocker arms, a highly compact oil pump and a reduction in the number of ribs on the auxiliary belt helps minimise engine friction losses, hence improving fuel economy. And control of the Dual VVT-i and EGR systems has been integrated to further enhance combustion efficiency.</p>

<p>Dual VVT-i helps boost response levels across the entire rev range by varying the air-fuel intake and exhaust valve timing to suit the conditions at any given time. In addition to improving torque at low and medium engine speeds, the system also reduces emissions.</p>

<p>EGR reintroduces precise amounts of cooled exhaust gas into the intake system. This not only reduces engine pumping loses through a reduction in intake vacuum pressure, but also lowers engine operating temperatures by 40˚C to minimise the situations where fuel enrichment is necessary to protect the catalytic converter from overheating damage.</p>

<p><strong>Multidrive S transmission</strong></p>

<p>The 1.33 litre petrol engine's optional Multidrive S transmission showcases Toyota's latest Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) technology. It features a manual override, sequential, 7-step mode operable by either the gearshift lever or steering wheel-mounted paddles.</p>

<p>This compact, lightweight CVT system is one of the most fuel efficient automatic transmission in the B-segment petrol, returning 5.1 l/100km.</p>

<p>Multidrive S operates within a wider band of gear ratios than a conventional transmission, allowing for both better acceleration from a standstill and improved fuel efficiency at cruising speeds. Its advanced control systems incorporate Flex Lock-up Control, Flex Start Control, Lock-up Slip Control and Speed Ratio Control to maximise fuel efficiency, minimise noise and enhance the driving experience.</p>

<p>Flex Lock-up Control continuously adjusts the degree of lock-up within the torque converter. This control function optimises the transmission's balance of torque delivery and fuel economy. It allows the engine to deliver the greatest fuel efficiency, whilst minimising vibration at even low vehicle speeds.</p>

<p>When pulling away from a standstill, Flex Start Control lowers the vehicle speed at which torque converter lock-up is possible from 15 to just 10 kilometres per hour. This minimizes torque waste, producing optimum acceleration from lower engine revs for improved fuel economy.</p>

<p>When coasting and under deceleration, Lock-up Slip Control enhances freewheeling efficiency through an expansion of fuel shut off duration. When the vehicle is stationary in D-mode, a neutral control will temporally disengage the transmission from the engine to minimise idling fuel consumption.</p>

<p>The CVT's Speed Ratio Control incorporates a number of systems to not only further improve fuel efficiency but also enhance the driving experience. Uphill/downhill shift control uses information from various vehicle sensors to determine whether the Yaris is travelling up- or downhill. When travelling uphill, speed ratio changes are restricted to achieve smooth operation. If brake pedal use is detected when travelling downhill, the speed ratio is automatically changed to provide appropriate engine braking force.</p>

<p>Engaging the Multidrive S Sport mode brings a closer alignment of engine and vehicle speeds, giving a more linear feel to acceleration in the manner of a conventional manual transmission. The Sport mode enhances acceleration performance and awards the driver a more dynamic driving experience.</p>

<p><strong>Stop & Start system</strong></p>

<p>Yaris models fitted with the 1.33 litre Dual VVT-i petrol engine may be equipped with an improved version of Toyota's Stop & Start system. The system may be used in conjunction with the optional Multidrive S transmission, delivering fuel consumption of 5.0 l/100km and CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions of only 114 g/km.</p>

<p>Featuring an immediate restart with virtually no engine sound or vibration, the system delivers significant reductions on CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions during urban driving, and can lower fuel consumption by up to 10%, depending on driving conditions.</p>

<p>Stop & Start automatically stops the engine when the car is stationary, and the clutch pedal &mdash;or brake pedal in the case of Multidrive S- is pressed. The engine will automatically restart, within less than half a second, when the same pedal is released.</p>

<p>The system's rapid restart is made possible through the use of the world's first permanently engaged gear mechanism in which the starter motor and flywheel are linked, via a ring gear, by a one way clutch. This high power, maintenance-free system reduces engine start noise levels within the cabin, and seat vibration levels.</p>

<p>A back-up boost converter is incorporated to protect the audio system, meters and ECUs (Electronic Control Units) from a voltage drop caused by the electrical load of the starter motor. The converter boosts the voltage supplied to accessories in compensation for the power consumed by the starter motor.</p>

<p>Now able to function in outside temperatures as low as -15˚C, Toyota's Stop & Start technology also allows for the continued operation of the air-conditioning system. With the air-conditioning in use, the engine will not stop if the desired cabin temperature has not been reached. When that temperature has been reached, the air-conditioner will switch to 'ECO-run', allowing the engine to stop.</p>

<p>The Yaris' improved Stop & Start system has been optimised to allow the engine to remain off for up to half a minute longer than that of its predecessor, even with the air conditioning running.</p>

<p>The engine will automatically restart in the event of low battery charge, or if the vehicle begins to move, in the interests of safety.</p>

<p><strong>1.4 Litre D-4D diesel engine</strong></p>

<p>The 1.4-litre D-4D common rail, intercooled turbodiesel employs the latest piezo-electric technology and is equipped, as standard, with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, it generates 66 kW / 90 DIN hp at 3,800 rpm and maximum torque of 205 Nm at 1,800-2,800 rpm.</p>

<p>Benefiting from high injection pressure of 160 MPa, the piezo-electric injectors can supply larger, more precise volumes of diesel at twice the speed of conventional fuel injectors. Because of their high operating speed, they can deliver multiple injections per combustion cycle, optimising the combustion process for responsive performance, enhanced fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.</p>

<p>The latest version of this durable, reliable diesel engine is equipped with a two-stage oil pressure control system and an LLC (Long-Life Coolant) by-pass system to reduce circulation flow rate under cold conditions, improving warm-up performance and, hence, fuel efficiency. As a result, fuel economy has been lowered by 7% to only 3.9 l/100 km, and CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions have reduced by 6% to just 103 g/km.</p>

<p><strong>MultiMode transmission</strong></p>

<p>Available as an option on 1.4 D-4D diesel versions of the new Yaris, MultiMode is an automated manual transmission with a fully automatic shift mode and no clutch pedal. It offers the driver a choice of two, fully automatic gear change modes or a manual, sequential gear change with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles. When equipped with MultiMode transmission, the 1.4 D-4D Yaris returns fuel consumption of 4.0 l/100km and generates CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;emissions of 105 g/km.</p>

<p>Selecting E (Easy), M (Manual) or R (Reverse) allows the car to 'creep' in the manner of a conventional automatic. In E mode, the car makes automatic gear shifts that will maximise fuel economy. Selecting ES (Easy Sport) mode will delay changing up to a higher rpm, giving a more sporting style of drive.</p>

<p><strong>Eco Driving and Gear Shift Indicators</strong></p>

<p>An Eco Driving Indicator is included in the instrument binnacle of Yaris models equipped with Multidrive S transmission, helping drivers to realise an eco-friendly, low emission-style of motoring. Under Eco driving, the Eco Driving Indicator light will illuminate during accelerator operation in the most fuel efficient zone. When the use of the accelerator exceeds this zone, the Eco light goes out.</p>

<p>On manual models, a Gear Shift Indicator prompts the Yaris driver to shift up or down a gear for maximum fuel efficiency. Monitoring driving conditions, vehicle speed and throttle inputs, the system can help reduce fuel consumption by 0.5-3.0%, depending on driving styles.</p>

<p>The new Yaris has been engineered to enhance every aspect of the driving experience, with a particular focus on urban agility and safe, predictable handling.</p>

<p>A new body structure offers improvements in both rigidity and aerodynamic efficiency. The new Yaris features a 15 mm wider front track than its predecessor, and particular focus on weight-saving measures have reduced the unsprung mass of the vehicle to promote greater agility.</p>

<p>The proven combination of MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension has been modified, the Electric Power Steering revised, and both the throttle characteristics and the transmission and differential gear ratios optimised.</p>

<p>In combination, these measures equip the new Yaris with sharper acceleration, greater agility and handling precision, improved stability and yaw response, and enhanced ride comfort.</p>

<p><strong>Body structure &mdash; increased rigidity and enhanced aerodynamics</strong></p>

<p>The extensive use of high-tensile steel within the new Yaris' construction not only saves weight, but also offers greater bodyshell rigidity for handling stability. Some 50% by weight of the new body is formed in high-tensile steel, allowing for a 5kg weight reduction with no loss of torsional stiffness.</p>

<p>Enhancements to the inherent aerodynamic efficiency of the new bodyshell include numerous underbody airflow rectification components which create a flat surface, smoothing the flow of air under the new Yaris. These include a front spoiler a full engine undercover front, centre and rear spats and a rear undercover which incorporates NACA-style vertical fins, creating a laminar flow effect to enhance stability.</p>

<p><strong>Weight saving &mdash; lower unsprung mass to promote greater agility</strong></p>

<p>Despite a small increase in length and an improved safety specification, the new Yaris is, in fact, 20 kg lighter than its predecessor.</p>

<p>The extensive use of high-tensile steel accounts for a 5 kg saving in bodyshell weight, and a new, lightweight rear seat design accounts for another 5 kg. The replacement of numerous steel suspension components with aluminium lowers vehicle weight by a further 3 kg.</p>

<p>Additional weight saving measures include the replacement of copper wiring with aluminium in 53 electrical circuits -effecting a 38% reduction in wiring loom mass, a 30% lighter starter motor, a smaller, lighter tailgate lock and striker mechanism, the adoption of a plastic fuel filler pipe, a plastic turbo air tube on the 1.4 D-4D turbodiesel engine, and a thinner instrument panel construction.</p>

<p>The reduced unsprung mass of the new Yaris promotes greater agility for ease of use in the urban environment.</p>

<p><strong>Suspension &mdash; proven systems tuned for optimum performance</strong></p>

<p>The new Yaris' front suspension is the independent, MacPherson strut system, which delivers high levels of ride comfort, driving safety, agility and grip, and a class-leading turning circle of just 4.7 metres.</p>

<p>In the interests of mass reduction, the revised system replaces the solid anti-roll bar, and steel strut bearing and stabiliser link of the current model with a hollow anti-roll bar, a plastic strut bearing and an aluminium stabiliser link. These weigh reduction measures improve the suspension's road tracking performance.</p>

<p>System performance has been enhanced through the adoption of a shock absorber 'initial valve' to improve damping force response, a rebound spring to reduce roll (in Sport grade models) and a change in lower arm bush characteristics. These revisions combine to reduce vibration and enhance ride smoothness while improving steering feel and yaw response.</p>

<p>To the rear, suspension mass reduction measures include a change of torsion beam inner tube from steel to aluminium and the adoption of a high-tensile material for the coil spring. A change in the torsion beam bush characteristics allied to an increase in spring rate lateral direction has improved the performance of the system, once again reducing vibration and enhancing ride comfort, while improving vehicle agility.</p>

<p><strong>Improved steering feel and response</strong></p>

<p>The new Yaris' Electric Power Steering (EPS) offers variable assistance for maximum urban manoeuvrability combined with optimum weight and feel during high speed driving.</p>

<p>For increased driver involvement, the steering column rake has been lowered by 3 degrees to 25 degrees to deliver a more engaging driving position. To improve steering feel and vehicle response, a quicker steering gear ratio has been adopted, increasing from 50 mm/rev to 56 mm/rev. The bearing rigidity of the rack and pinion gearing has also been improved to reduce friction and system play, further enhancing accuracy and feel.</p>

<p>To maintain ease of steering despite the adoption of a quicker gear ratio, the EPS motor power output has been increased from 55 A to 70 A.</p>

<p><strong>Brakes and tyres</strong></p>

<p>Incorporating Electronic Brakeforce distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist, Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), the new Yaris is equipped with the latest braking and stability systems.</p>

<p>The vehicle is fitted with 258 mm x 22 mm ventilated disc brakes to the front, and solid 278 mm x 9 mm discs or 203 mm drums to the rear. The braking system benefits from the latest generation actuator, a 9" brake booster, stronger servo assistance and a lightweight, highly rigid brake pedal constructed from thin, plasma welded plates, giving an improvement in pedal feel.</p>

<p>Newly developed, fuel efficient tyres offer ultra-low rolling resistance and excellent levels of grip with no impact on stopping distance, while their reduced vertical stiffness further improves ride comfort.</p>

<p>14" wheels are fitted with 175/70R 14 tyres and 15" wheels with and 175/65R 15 tyres. The rolling resistance coefficient of both the 14" and 15" tyres has been reduced, contributing to lower fuel consumption, while the dry mu of the 14" tyre has been increased to improve grip.</p>

<p>As with its predecessors, the new Yaris had been designed to offer the highest levels of active, passive and pedestrian impact safety performance, with the aim of achieving a maximum, 5-star Euro NCAP 2011 safety assessment rating.</p>

<p>The new Yaris has a lightweight yet high rigidity, impact-absorbing body shell of which some 50% by weight is fabricated in high tensile steel. The body has been designed to efficiently disperse front, side and rear collision energy, helping to reduce cabin deformation.</p>

<p>In cases of frontal collision, cabin deformation is suppressed by the absorption and dispersion of impact loads from the front bumper through the front side members, A pillars, rocker panel and underbody structure.</p>

<p>Three specific measures have been adopted to improve side impact performance: High-tensile steel is used for the outer side of the B pillars, roof rails and rockers, and for the upper B pillar door hinges. Bulkheads have been installed inside the rockers to ensure efficient impact load transfer and suppress rocker breakage. And impact energy-absorbing beams have been located within the door structure to mitigate impact force.</p>

<p>To the rear, bumper reinforcements and a crash box absorb the collision energy of a rear impact.</p>

<p><strong>Pedestrian protection performance</strong></p>

<p>The Yaris incorporates numerous features to maximise its pedestrian protection performance. Energy absorbing materials located on the leading edge of the front bumper reinforcement and the bottom end of the bumper help reduce impact energy directed at a pedestrian's legs.</p>

<p>An energy absorbing, pantograph bonnet structure incorporates a crushable cowl louver at its rear edge. The front wings incorporate an impact absorbing installation bracket structure. A low-impact bonnet hinge structure prevents the hinge arm from impacting the body in a collision, and the wiper pivot is mounted on a detachable structure.</p>

<p><strong>Seven SRS airbags</strong></p>

<p>The new Yaris may be equipped with up to seven SRS airbags driver and front passenger airbags, a driver's knee airbag, front side airbags and full-length side curtain shield airbags.</p>

<p>The front passenger side airbag is now fitted with two chambers to offer improved protection. It features larger volume cushions (thorax/abdomen 8 litres, pelvis 4.5 litres) and staggered deployment timing.</p>

<p>The pelvis bag inflates to a higher peak pressure to move the seat occupant out of the impact zone, applying force where body strength is highest. The thorax/abdomen bag inflates fractionally earlier and at a lower speed, tailoring force characteristics to the occupant's thorax and abdomen.</p>

<p>All front and rear seats feature three-point, ELR (Emergency Locking Retractor) seatbelts. The ELR is designed to lock up the seatbelt when excessive load is applied over a preset value. Driver and front passenger seatbelts further benefit from a pre-tensioner and force limiter function. During a collision, the force limiter fractionally reduces seatbelt tension to lower occupant chest impact forces.</p>

<p>The new Yaris is fitted with ISOFIX mountings to ensure the easy and safe installation of child seats. The attachments take the form of two pairs of brackets located at the base of the rear seat squabs. In addition, CRS top tether anchor bars have been fitted to the rear seatback frames for the securing of child seats.</p>

<p><strong>WIL seats</strong></p>

<p>The Yaris is fitted with Whiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) front seats to reduce whiplash injuries during rear end collisions. The revised WIL system features stronger seat frames to absorb higher impact velocities, and a refined head restraint shape to offer a better balance of comfort and protection.</p>

<p>Should a rear impact of sufficient velocity occur, the seat structure allows the occupant's upper body to sink backwards, matching the movement of the upper body to that of the head to reduce the risk of a whiplash injury.</p>

<p><strong>ABS, EBD, BA, TRC and VSC Active Safety Systems</strong></p>

<p>The new Yaris may be fitted with a comprehensive range of active safety systems, including an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC).</p>

<p>EBD works with ABS to ensure that the most effective brake force is applied to each wheel, according to road conditions. By preventing the wheels from locking, EBD helps to maintain sure-footed stability during cornering and braking.</p>

<p>BA identifies the need for, and applies, additional braking force if the driver fails to apply sufficient force during emergency braking, or releases brake pressure too soon.</p>

<p>TRC monitors and controls the amount of power that is applied to the road through the car's wheels. If the system detects that one or more wheels is about to lose traction it instantly determines the best way to restore traction to that wheel, either by decreasing the power being sent to the wheel that is about to spin or, in more extreme cases, momentarily braking the wheel until it regains traction.</p>

<p>VSC is designed to prevent loss of car control when entering a corner too fast or in slippery conditions which might lead to a skid. Via sensors monitoring car body rotation, wheel speed and brake pressure, the system assesses vehicle stability and the proximity of either an understeer or oversteer slide.</p>

<p>The system restores stability by automatically adjusting engine output and applying smoothly modulated braking to the appropriate wheel individually, helping the driver to restore vehicle stability.</p>

<p><strong>Active grade</strong></p>

<p>Offering outstanding value for money, with a high level of interior refinement and an extremely generous standard equipment specification, the Active grade will attract new customers to the Toyota brand and is expected to represent the largest percentage of new Yaris sales.</p>

<p>It features soft touch dashboard and door panel trim, gun metal inserts, steering wheel-mounted audio and Bluetooth switchgear, driver's seat height adjustment, and silver stitching to the leather steering wheel and gear lever surround. A full audio multimedia 6.1'' display interface with Bluetooth and USB/Aux connectivity incorporates a rear view camera, and manual air-conditioning is fitted as standard. With seven airbags, ABS and VSC, the Active grade also offers customers the highest levels of safety.</p>

<p><strong>Style grade</strong></p>

<p>The Style grade targets younger customers, offering the highest levels of standard equipment and the most dynamic, sporting, interior trim. Externally, it features a stiffer suspension set-up, 16" alloy wheels, front fog lamps with chrome surrounds and an integral rear spoiler. The interior includes grade-exclusive colour, trim and driver's instruments, driver and front passenger's seat height adjustment and armrest, and orange stitching for the steering wheel and hand break.</p>

<p><strong>Lounge grade</strong></p>

<p>The Lounge grade has been tailored to appeal to both existing Yaris owners and those downsizing from the C-segment. It features a grade-specific light grey finish for the soft touch dashboard pad and door panels, an exclusive seat trim, driver and front passenger's seat height adjustment and armrest, a newly introduced dual-zone automatic climate control system with ventilated glove box, electric rear windows, alloy wheels and front fog lamps.</p>

<p><strong>Toyota Touch</strong></p>

<p>Reflecting today's highly connected society, on-board multimedia systems are in increasing demand by customers of every automotive segment, regardless of vehicle price or model grade.</p>

<p>These customers require a system which gives centralized, touch screen control of the widest possible range of vehicle functions, as well as connectivity to external devices such as mobile phones and portable music players.</p>

<p>Toyota Touch is a 6.1 inch, full colour, touch screen interface which represents a new approach to affordable, on-board multimedia systems. Fitted, as standard, on the new Yaris from the Active grade, it incorporates AM/FM radio, a CD/MP3 player, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity with a music streaming facility, and automatic phonebook synchronisation at each connection. A USB port allows for the connection of portable music players, with the facility to display iTunes album cover art.</p>

<p>On-screen vehicle information displays include remaining fuel range, instant fuel consumption, average fuel consumption per minute over the last 15 minutes and time elapsed since last engine start. The system is available in the French, English, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Russian languages.</p>

<p>In addition, the system incorporates a rear view camera, fitted as standard. The image is displayed on the Toyota Touch screen when reverse gear is engaged, to assist with parking manoeuvres.</p>

<p><strong>Toyota Touch & Go</strong></p>

<p>Building on the Toyota Touch multimedia base unit, Toyota Touch & Go equips the new Yaris with a navigation system representing the best value for money on the market.</p>

<p>The system includes all the most popular navigation functions, such as advanced traffic coverage, customisable speed limits, speed camera warnings and motorway signposting.</p>

<p>In addition, it not only offers drivers a choice of the fastest or shortest route to their destination, but also the one with the smallest environmental impact - an 'Ecological' route option.</p>

<p>Using a compatible mobile phone, via Bluetooth, the system offers on-board connectivity to a Google Local Search function &mdash;the largest and most up-to-date search database in the world. Via Google Maps, destinations may be input remotely from home or office, and Points of Interest may be downloaded for entry as destinations.</p>

<p>The installation of Touch & Go also upgrades the multimedia base unit with the addition of an SMS on-screen send/receive function incorporating a contact person image display, and a USB-based photo viewing function.</p>

<p>Several Toyota Touch & Go Apps will be available for download from launch, such as fuel price, weather and parking space information. In addition, A specific Facebook App has been developed to allow Yaris owners to stay in touch with the 180 million European Facebook users over the course of their journey.</p>

<p>Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (TMMF) has been building the Yaris for a decade. It remains committed to delivering vehicles with the highest levels of built-in quality in the B-segment.</p>

<p>The Yaris has already established a reputation for outstanding levels of Quality, Durability and Reliability. Such quality can only be assured through its comprehensive integration into every facet of the Toyota manufacturing process.</p>

<p>Development of the new Yaris project at TMMF was based on three key pillars:</p>

<p>> First, the identification of improvement points from each of the current Yaris production areas, and the very early incorporation of these requirements into the development of the new vehicle structure.</p>

<p>> Second, the guarantee of a smooth transfer of the new Yaris assembly operation to plant members through proper training and a review of fundamental skills.</p>

<p>> Third, the continued improvement of built-in quality in the company's manufacturing processes, based on Toyota production System principles.</p>

<p>TMMF engineers were involved in the development of the new Yaris for three years before the start of production &mdash; a year and a half longer than on the previous generation vehicle.</p>

<p>All manufacturing and quality departments sent several engineers to Japan for between 6 to 18 months, to study and further improve the vehicle design. The feedback generated has proved highly beneficial in minimising potential production quality issues.</p>

<p>Key to maintaining built-in quality in the long term, TMMF also focused on ensuring that every part has been designed for more consistent quality over the course of repeated manufacture, allowing for greater control of both fitting accuracy and build quality.</p>

<p>Cross functional Business Reform working groups focusing on design, quality, suppliers and production were also established. Their aim is to review critical process characteristics to guarantee the built-in quality of five critical functions -braking, acceleration, turning, fuel leaks and potential fire starting points. This also further improves quality consciousness from team members, as well as strengthening warranty management and the critical process audit.</p>

<p>The direct involvement of suppliers in the vehicle production preparation process was also essential to ensure the highest possible quality.</p>

<p>This involvement takes the form of numerous diverse activities: Within an intensive supplier development programme, Toyota engineers are based at strategic supplier factories to share knowledge and assist in the achievement of the expected quality standards.</p>

<p>For new parts, Toyota uses Simultaneous Engineering &mdash;the early exchange of part design ideas and manufacturing techniques between the company and the supplier- as well as supplier parts tracking teams -multiple visits to the supplier to ensure quality milestones are achieved- to solve problems well before the start of production.</p>

<p>Immediately prior to the start of new Yaris mass production, every supplier visited TMMF on a regular basis, both before and during assembly trial periods. This allow for extensive discussion, design reviews and trial parts fitting, with the aim of identifying all potential problems.</p>

<p>Overall, a longer project development lead time within the Toyota plant and the early involvement of suppliers in the design process combine to guarantee the earliest possible identification of problems. <p><strong>Style grade</strong></p>

<p>The Style grade targets younger customers, offering the highest levels of standard equipment and the most dynamic, sporting, interior trim. Externally, it features a stiffer suspension set-up, 16" alloy wheels, front fog lamps with chrome surrounds and an integral rear spoiler. The interior includes grade-exclusive colour, trim and driver's instruments, driver and front passenger's seat height adjustment and armrest, and orange stitching for the steering wheel and hand break.</p>

<p><strong>Lounge grade</strong></p>

<p>The Lounge grade has been tailored to appeal to both existing Yaris owners and those downsizing from the C-segment. It features a grade-specific light grey finish for the soft touch dashboard pad and door panels, an exclusive seat trim, driver and front passenger's seat height adjustment and armrest, a newly introduced dual-zone automatic climate control system with ventilated glove box, electric rear windows, alloy wheels and front fog lamps.</p>

<p><strong>Toyota Touch</strong></p>

<p>Reflecting today's highly connected society, on-board multimedia systems are in increasing demand by customers of every automotive segment, regardless of vehicle price or model grade.</p>

<p>These customers require a system which gives centralized, touch screen control of the widest possible range of vehicle functions, as well as connectivity to external devices such as mobile phones and portable music players.</p>

<p>Toyota Touch is a 6.1 inch, full colour, touch screen interface which represents a new approach to affordable, on-board multimedia systems. Fitted, as standard, on the new Yaris from the Active grade, it incorporates AM/FM radio, a CD/MP3 player, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity with a music streaming facility, and automatic phonebook synchronisation at each connection. A USB port allows for the connection of portable music players, with the facility to display iTunes album cover art.</p>

<p>On-screen vehicle information displays include remaining fuel range, instant fuel consumption, average fuel consumption per minute over the last 15 minutes and time elapsed since last engine start. The system is available in the French, English, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Russian languages.</p>

<p>In addition, the system incorporates a rear view camera, fitted as standard. The image is displayed on the Toyota Touch screen when reverse gear is engaged, to assist with parking manoeuvres.</p>

<p><strong>Toyota Touch & Go</strong></p>

<p>Building on the Toyota Touch multimedia base unit, Toyota Touch & Go equips the new Yaris with a navigation system representing the best value for money on the market.</p>

<p>The system includes all the most popular navigation functions, such as advanced traffic coverage, customisable speed limits, speed camera warnings and motorway signposting.</p>

<p>In addition, it not only offers drivers a choice of the fastest or shortest route to their destination, but also the one with the smallest environmental impact - an 'Ecological' route option.</p>

<p>Using a compatible mobile phone, via Bluetooth, the system offers on-board connectivity to a Google Local Search function &mdash;the largest and most up-to-date search database in the world. Via Google Maps, destinations may be input remotely from home or office, and Points of Interest may be downloaded for entry as destinations.</p>

<p>The installation of Touch & Go also upgrades the multimedia base unit with the addition of an SMS on-screen send/receive function incorporating a contact person image display, and a USB-based photo viewing function.</p>

<p>Several Toyota Touch & Go Apps will be available for download from launch, such as fuel price, weather and parking space information. In addition, A specific Facebook App has been developed to allow Yaris owners to stay in touch with the 180 million European Facebook users over the course of their journey.</p>

]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>As with its predecessors, the new Yaris had been designed to offer the highest levels of active, passive and pedestrian impact safety performance, with the aim of achieving a maximum, 5-star Euro NCAP 2011 safety assessment rating.</p>

<p>The new Yaris has a lightweight yet high rigidity, impact-absorbing body shell of which some 50% by weight is fabricated in high tensile steel. The body has been designed to efficiently disperse front, side and rear collision energy, helping to reduce cabin deformation.</p>

<p>In cases of frontal collision, cabin deformation is suppressed by the absorption and dispersion of impact loads from the front bumper through the front side members, A pillars, rocker panel and underbody structure.</p>

<p>Three specific measures have been adopted to improve side impact performance: High-tensile steel is used for the outer side of the B pillars, roof rails and rockers, and for the upper B pillar door hinges. Bulkheads have been installed inside the rockers to ensure efficient impact load transfer and suppress rocker breakage. And impact energy-absorbing beams have been located within the door structure to mitigate impact force.</p>

<p>To the rear, bumper reinforcements and a crash box absorb the collision energy of a rear impact.</p>

<p><strong>Pedestrian protection performance</strong></p>

<p>The Yaris incorporates numerous features to maximise its pedestrian protection performance. Energy absorbing materials located on the leading edge of the front bumper reinforcement and the bottom end of the bumper help reduce impact energy directed at a pedestrian's legs.</p>

<p>An energy absorbing, pantograph bonnet structure incorporates a crushable cowl louver at its rear edge. The front wings incorporate an impact absorbing installation bracket structure. A low-impact bonnet hinge structure prevents the hinge arm from impacting the body in a collision, and the wiper pivot is mounted on a detachable structure.</p>

<p><strong>Seven SRS airbags</strong></p>

<p>The new Yaris may be equipped with up to seven SRS airbags driver and front passenger airbags, a driver's knee airbag, front side airbags and full-length side curtain shield airbags.</p>

<p>The front passenger side airbag is now fitted with two chambers to offer improved protection. It features larger volume cushions (thorax/abdomen 8 litres, pelvis 4.5 litres) and staggered deployment timing.</p>

<p>The pelvis bag inflates to a higher peak pressure to move the seat occupant out of the impact zone, applying force where body strength is highest. The thorax/abdomen bag inflates fractionally earlier and at a lower speed, tailoring force characteristics to the occupant's thorax and abdomen.</p>

<p>All front and rear seats feature three-point, ELR (Emergency Locking Retractor) seatbelts. The ELR is designed to lock up the seatbelt when excessive load is applied over a preset value. Driver and front passenger seatbelts further benefit from a pre-tensioner and force limiter function. During a collision, the force limiter fractionally reduces seatbelt tension to lower occupant chest impact forces.</p>

<p>The new Yaris is fitted with ISOFIX mountings to ensure the easy and safe installation of child seats. The attachments take the form of two pairs of brackets located at the base of the rear seat squabs. In addition, CRS top tether anchor bars have been fitted to the rear seatback frames for the securing of child seats.</p>

<p><strong>WIL seats</strong></p>

<p>The Yaris is fitted with Whiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) front seats to reduce whiplash injuries during rear end collisions. The revised WIL system features stronger seat frames to absorb higher impact velocities, and a refined head restraint shape to offer a better balance of comfort and protection.</p>

<p>Should a rear impact of sufficient velocity occur, the seat structure allows the occupant's upper body to sink backwards, matching the movement of the upper body to that of the head to reduce the risk of a whiplash injury.</p>

<p><strong>ABS, EBD, BA, TRC and VSC Active Safety Systems</strong>&nbsp;</p>

<p>The new Yaris may be fitted with a comprehensive range of active safety systems, including an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC).</p>

<p>EBD works with ABS to ensure that the most effective brake force is applied to each wheel, according to road conditions. By preventing the wheels from locking, EBD helps to maintain sure-footed stability during cornering and braking.</p>

<p>BA identifies the need for, and applies, additional braking force if the driver fails to apply sufficient force during emergency braking, or releases brake pressure too soon.</p>

<p>TRC monitors and controls the amount of power that is applied to the road through the car's wheels. If the system detects that one or more wheels is about to lose traction it instantly determines the best way to restore traction to that wheel, either by decreasing the power being sent to the wheel that is about to spin or, in more extreme cases, momentarily braking the wheel until it regains traction.</p>

<p>VSC is designed to prevent loss of car control when entering a corner too fast or in slippery conditions which might lead to a skid. Via sensors monitoring car body rotation, wheel speed and brake pressure, the system assesses vehicle stability and the proximity of either an understeer or oversteer slide.</p>

<p>The Yaris has already established a reputation for outstanding levels of Quality, Durability and Reliability. Such quality can only be assured through its comprehensive integration into every facet of the Toyota manufacturing process.</p>

<p>Development of the new Yaris project at TMMF was based on three key pillars:</p>

<p>> First, the identification of improvement points from each of the current Yaris production areas, and the very early incorporation of these requirements into the development of the new vehicle structure.</p>

<p>> Second, the guarantee of a smooth transfer of the new Yaris assembly operation to plant members through proper training and a review of fundamental skills.</p>

<p>> Third, the continued improvement of built-in quality in the company's manufacturing processes, based on Toyota production System principles.</p>

<p>TMMF engineers were involved in the development of the new Yaris for three years before the start of production &mdash; a year and a half longer than on the previous generation vehicle.</p>

<p>All manufacturing and quality departments sent several engineers to Japan for between 6 to 18 months, to study and further improve the vehicle design. The feedback generated has proved highly beneficial in minimising potential production quality issues.</p>

<p>Key to maintaining built-in quality in the long term, TMMF also focused on ensuring that every part has been designed for more consistent quality over the course of repeated manufacture, allowing for greater control of both fitting accuracy and build quality.</p>

<p>Cross functional Business Reform working groups focusing on design, quality, suppliers and production were also established. Their aim is to review critical process characteristics to guarantee the built-in quality of five critical functions -braking, acceleration, turning, fuel leaks and potential fire starting points. This also further improves quality consciousness from team members, as well as strengthening warranty management and the critical process audit.</p>

<p>The direct involvement of suppliers in the vehicle production preparation process was also essential to ensure the highest possible quality.</p>

<p>This involvement takes the form of numerous diverse activities: Within an intensive supplier development programme, Toyota engineers are based at strategic supplier factories to share knowledge and assist in the achievement of the expected quality standards.</p>

<p>For new parts, Toyota uses Simultaneous Engineering &mdash;the early exchange of part design ideas and manufacturing techniques between the company and the supplier- as well as supplier parts tracking teams -multiple visits to the supplier to ensure quality milestones are achieved- to solve problems well before the start of production.</p>

<p>Immediately prior to the start of new Yaris mass production, every supplier visited TMMF on a regular basis, both before and during assembly trial periods. This allow for extensive discussion, design reviews and trial parts fitting, with the aim of identifying all potential problems.</p>

<p>Overall, a longer project development lead time within the Toyota plant and the early involvement of suppliers in the design process combine to guarantee the earliest possible identification of problems. The driver's and front passenger's spaces are clearly divided, emphasising a new focus on the driver ergonomics. And perceptions of sensory quality throughout are enhanced through highly tactile, premium quality detailing new to the B-segment. The incremental saving of space through careful detailing throughout the interior, makes the new Yaris one of the roomiest vehicles in its segment, with class-leading rear seat knee and headroom, as well as segment-best loadspace length and width.</p>

<p><strong>All-new Interior &mdash; enhanced spaciousness and improved sensory quality</strong></p>

<p>Emphasising the breadth of the cabin, the new dashboard design is 125mm wider and 40 mm lower than that of the previous model. Incorporating strong horizontal lines to create a feeling of width, the dashboard is dominated by a sculpted, soft-padded section which flows away from the driver's space into matching, upper door panel pads, heightening the sense of interior spaciousness.</p>

<p>Dashboard and door pad colour is matched to seat upholstery inserts according to the grade structure, reinforcing the high-quality feel of the interior. An overall feeling of spaciousness and light is enhanced by larger front quarterlight glazing.</p>

<p>Perceptions of sensory quality are improved through highly tactile, premium quality detailing. The driver's instruments, Multimedia touch screen and air vents are trimmed with gun metal finish, concave cross-sectioned rings. And all controls and switchgear feature chrome plated convex cross-sections.</p>

<p>Adding a sense of fun, the grain texture of the dashboard and door panels decreases in density from left to right, giving an impression of lateral expansion. And the speaker grilles are finished in a unique bubble motif.</p>

<p>The spaciousness and high sensory quality of the all-new interior is further reinforced through the Yaris' large, all-glass panoramic sunroof. The structure is separated into front and rear sections allowing more flexibility for front and rear occupant to open or close, each fitted with a 20% light transmittance roller shade.</p>

<p><strong>Driver-focused cockpit &mdash; improved adjustability and ergonomic excellence</strong></p>

<p>Unlike previous Yaris generations, the instrument binnacle is now positioned central to the steering wheel. A new, easy-to-read, amber/red backlit combination meter features a large, 120 mm diameter central speedometer. All driver-focused controls and adjacent centre console switchgear are ergonomically located for high visibility with minimum eye movement, and ease of use.</p>

<p>The front seats feature an entirely new framework offering improved body-holding performance and excellent ride comfort. The seat back offers improved lateral hold at waist level, with a more open, relaxed fit at shoulder height. The width of the seat cushion has been increased and the side sections raised for improved holding. The seating surface area has been increased and the front edge of the seat cushion raised to help reduce long-distance fatigue.</p>

<p>In the interests of improved comfort, driver's seat vertical adjustability has been increased by 15 mm to a maximum 60 mm. The seat's 240 mm sliding range remains the same, but the 16, 15 mm adjustment steps have been divided into 24 smaller, 10 mm increments to help secure an ideal driving position. A driver's seat armrest is also available for greater comfort.</p>

<p>Further enhancing driver comfort, the three-spoke, stitched leather steering wheel has a new, more comfortable grip cross-section, enlarged finger rests for a more natural grip, and protrusions on the back of the rim where it connects to the spoke for enhanced grip feel. The steering column rake has been lowered by 3 degrees to 25 degrees to deliver a more engaging driving position. The wheel itself offers 30 mm rake and 40 mm reach adjustment, and features a flat bottom rim section for better knee clearance.</p>

<p><strong>Interior packaging - class-leading passenger and loadspace roominess</strong></p>

<p>Despite its compact exterior dimensions, passenger accommodation aboard the new Yaris has not been compromised. Wheelbase length has been increased by 50 mm and interior width by 30 mm. As a result, though the passenger space length within the bodyshell remains at 1,810 mm, the percentage of interior space available within the overall length of new Yaris has increased by 2% to 65%.</p>

<p>Without compromise to either comfort or safety, both front and rear seatbacks, as well as the tailgate, have been thinned to maximise roominess throughout. The Yaris' front to rear hip point couple distance of 865 mm remains one of the longest in the B-segment. These attributes increase rear passenger legroom by 35 mm to 645 mm, and rear seat knee-room by 30 mm to a class-leading 120 mm. Though the ceiling is 5 mm lower than before, there is no change in the new Yaris' segment-best rear seat headroom.</p>

<p>The front seats of three-door Yaris versions feature an easy entry, walk-in mechanism operated by a lever located on the seat shoulder. The passenger seat simultaneously tilts and slides forwards to allow ease of entry to, and egress from, the rear seats, a full memory function returning the seat to its previous position. The driver's seat mechanism incorporates a recliner memory to return the seat back to its previous angle of recline.</p>

<p>With the tailgate lock and striker mechanism significantly reduced in both size and weight to gain 96 mm in loadspace length, the overall length of the luggage compartment has been increased by 145 mm to a class-leading 710 mm. With the 60:40 split rear seats folded flat, the loadspace length has been increased by 85 mm to 1,500 mm. The loadspace width has also been increased by up to 55 mm, resulting in a segment-best maximum of 1,365 mm.</p>

<p>Overall luggage capacity within the two-tier loadspace has been increased to 286 litres, rising to 768 litres with the split rear seats folded flat. Locating the dual-position deck board on the upper level creates a 633 mm long, 1,006 mm wide and 120 mm deep concealed storage compartment. For ease of loading, the tailgate cill has been lowered by 7 mm to just 660 mm easily the lowest cill height in this class. The tailgate opening has also been widened by 20 mm for greater convenience.</p>

<p><strong>Focus on detail &mdash; for greater comfort and convenience</strong></p>

<p>Every aspect of cabin function detailing has been carefully considered to ensure ease of use and optimised occupant comfort.</p>

<p>The new Yaris features an improved door closing operation. Essential in the urban environment, a new, three step door opening mechanism incorporates 25 and 37 degree intermediate holding positions, whilst the door itself has been made easier to close, with less effort required. High grade model, keyless entry door handles now replace a black push switch with a fully integrated touch sensor mechanism.</p>

<p>A pantograph-type, single front windscreen wiper replaces the twin wipers of the outgoing model. This system improves wiping performance at high vehicle speeds, generates lower wind noise and, through a lower blade height and the use of a fin cover, improves vehicle aerodynamics. Screen-wash is dispensed along the entire length of the blade itself, reducing view obstruction during application.</p>

<p>Fully described in the Grade Structure chapter, the new Yaris may be equipped with Toyota Touch -a new approach to affordable touch screen multimedia systems, and -Toyota Touch & Go &mdash;the best value satellite navigation system on the market.</p>

<p>For the first time, the new Yaris may be equipped with dual-zone automatic air conditioning, and a ventilated glove box mirrors the climate control system settings. Cruise control is available as an option, and a Follow-Me-Home headlight function keeps the low beam lamps illuminated for between 30 and 120 seconds after the vehicle has been locked.</p>

<p>The new Yaris offers occupants the full range of storage compartments essential to everyday family use. There are six drinks holders spaced throughout the cabin (including a 1 litre bottle holder), and 13 other storage spaces, such as a ventilated glove box, secret in-dash document storage, dashboard and centre console bins and trays, front and rear door pockets and a concealed storage compartment beneath the loadspace deck board.</p>

<p><strong>NVH measures &mdash; for a quieter, stress-free interior</strong></p>

<p>The new Yaris benefits from a variety of measures designed to minimise wind, road and engine noise, resulting in a quiet cabin environment.</p>

<p>A Yaris first, a sound insulating acoustic glass windscreen featuring an inner layer of film helps reduce wind, road and engine noise. The optimal placement of air spats, the aerodynamic efficiency of new door mirrors and the new, single wiper blade further reduce wind noise.</p>

<p>Sound-insulating and sound-absorbing materials have been extensively used throughout the bodyshell and interior construction. The transmission of engine compartment noise has been reduced through the application of a high-density insulator to the bonnet, a high-density engine undercover silencer, front wing insulation and, another Yaris first, a cowl insulator.</p>

<p>A front wing protector has been fitted between the wing and the front pillar to further reduce noise transmission to the cabin. Both wheel arch insulation and a lower rocker protector reduce the sound of loose material kicked up from the road surface.</p>

<p>A sound absorbing/insulating dashboard inner silencer further diminishes engine noise within the cabin. Comprehensive cabin noise-inhibiting measures include the use of damping sheets throughout the bodyshell floor, and the application of sound-insulating and &mdash;absorbing materials to the instrument panel, centre console, transmission tunnel, door and luggage compartment trims, headlining, carpeting and loadspace floor.</p>

<p>In addition, the introduction of foam and fixed foam sound insulation materials within the A, B and C pillars as well as the door cill and head sections minimises the transmission of noise through the bodyshell.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[toyota news,2011 yaris]]></category>

<p>A new body structure offers improvements in both rigidity and aerodynamic efficiency. The new Yaris features a 15 mm wider front track than its predecessor, and particular focus on weight-saving measures have reduced the unsprung mass of the vehicle to promote greater agility.</p>

<p>The proven combination of MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension has been modified, the Electric Power Steering revised, and both the throttle characteristics and the transmission and differential gear ratios optimised.</p>

<p>In combination, these measures equip the new Yaris with sharper acceleration, greater agility and handling precision, improved stability and yaw response, and enhanced ride comfort.</p>

<p><strong>Body structure &mdash; increased rigidity and enhanced aerodynamics</strong></p>

<p>The extensive use of high-tensile steel within the new Yaris' construction not only saves weight, but also offers greater bodyshell rigidity for handling stability. Some 50% by weight of the new body is formed in high-tensile steel, allowing for a 5kg weight reduction with no loss of torsional stiffness.</p>

<p>Enhancements to the inherent aerodynamic efficiency of the new bodyshell include numerous underbody airflow rectification components which create a flat surface, smoothing the flow of air under the new Yaris. These include a front spoiler a full engine undercover front, centre and rear spats and a rear undercover which incorporates NACA-style vertical fins, creating a laminar flow effect to enhance stability.</p>

<p><strong>Weight saving &mdash; lower unsprung mass to promote greater agility</strong></p>

<p>Despite a small increase in length and an improved safety specification, the new Yaris is, in fact, 20 kg lighter than its predecessor.</p>

<p>The extensive use of high-tensile steel accounts for a 5 kg saving in bodyshell weight, and a new, lightweight rear seat design accounts for another 5 kg. The replacement of numerous steel suspension components with aluminium lowers vehicle weight by a further 3 kg.</p>

<p>Additional weight saving measures include the replacement of copper wiring with aluminium in 53 electrical circuits -effecting a 38% reduction in wiring loom mass, a 30% lighter starter motor, a smaller, lighter tailgate lock and striker mechanism, the adoption of a plastic fuel filler pipe, a plastic turbo air tube on the 1.4 D-4D turbodiesel engine, and a thinner instrument panel construction.</p>

<p>The reduced unsprung mass of the new Yaris promotes greater agility for ease of use in the urban environment.</p>

<p><strong>Suspension &mdash; proven systems tuned for optimum performance</strong></p>

<p>The new Yaris' front suspension is the independent, MacPherson strut system, which delivers high levels of ride comfort, driving safety, agility and grip, and a class-leading turning circle of just 4.7 metres.</p>

<p>In the interests of mass reduction, the revised system replaces the solid anti-roll bar, and steel strut bearing and stabiliser link of the current model with a hollow anti-roll bar, a plastic strut bearing and an aluminium stabiliser link. These weigh reduction measures improve the suspension's road tracking performance.</p>

<p>System performance has been enhanced through the adoption of a shock absorber 'initial valve' to improve damping force response, a rebound spring to reduce roll (in Sport grade models) and a change in lower arm bush characteristics. These revisions combine to reduce vibration and enhance ride smoothness while improving steering feel and yaw response.</p>

<p>To the rear, suspension mass reduction measures include a change of torsion beam inner tube from steel to aluminium and the adoption of a high-tensile material for the coil spring. A change in the torsion beam bush characteristics allied to an increase in spring rate lateral direction has improved the performance of the system, once again reducing vibration and enhancing ride comfort, while improving vehicle agility.</p>

<p><strong>Improved steering feel and response</strong></p>

<p>The new Yaris' Electric Power Steering (EPS) offers variable assistance for maximum urban manoeuvrability combined with optimum weight and feel during high speed driving.</p>

<p>For increased driver involvement, the steering column rake has been lowered by 3 degrees to 25 degrees to deliver a more engaging driving position. To improve steering feel and vehicle response, a quicker steering gear ratio has been adopted, increasing from 50 mm/rev to 56 mm/rev. The bearing rigidity of the rack and pinion gearing has also been improved to reduce friction and system play, further enhancing accuracy and feel.</p>

<p>To maintain ease of steering despite the adoption of a quicker gear ratio, the EPS motor power output has been increased from 55 A to 70 A.</p>

<p><strong>Brakes and tyres</strong></p>

<p>Incorporating Electronic Brakeforce distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist, Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), the new Yaris is equipped with the latest braking and stability systems.</p>

<p>The vehicle is fitted with 258 mm x 22 mm ventilated disc brakes to the front, and solid 278 mm x 9 mm discs or 203 mm drums to the rear. The braking system benefits from the latest generation actuator, a 9" brake booster, stronger servo assistance and a lightweight, highly rigid brake pedal constructed from thin, plasma welded plates, giving an improvement in pedal feel.</p>

<p>Newly developed, fuel efficient tyres offer ultra-low rolling resistance and excellent levels of grip with no impact on stopping distance, while their reduced vertical stiffness further improves ride comfort.</p>

<p>14" wheels are fitted with 175/70R 14 tyres and 15" wheels with and 175/65R 15 tyres. The rolling resistance coefficient of both the 14" and 15" tyres has been reduced, contributing to lower fuel consumption, while the dry mu of the 14" tyre has been increased to improve grip.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[toyota news,2011 yaris]]></category>
