</pp:summary>

Toyota’s new C-HR compact crossover is set to hit the dealerships in late November, but you can see it now in Paris’ Champs Elysées. Equipped with the latest-generation Toyota hybrid powertrain, it’s the star attraction of Le Rendez-Vous Toyota’s ‘Clean Technologies’ show. Three display models allow visitors to take their time discovering its bold styling and state-of-the-art technology. There’s also a demonstration of the Toyota C-HR’s tailor-made JBL sound system.

On display alongside the three C-HRs is the RAV4. Initially launched in 1994 as the forerunner of the compact SUV segment, the latest RAV4 model is now available with a hybrid powertrain. This version accounts for most of the RAV4 sales in France.

Straight from winning the Monte Carlo e-Rally, the hydrogen Mirai is in Toyota’s brand store to illustrate how ‘Clean Technologies’ also work for long journeys. Producing electricity by combining hydrogen and air in its fuel cell and only emitting water, the Mirai achieves a driving range of over 500 km.

The compact battery-driven electric vehicles developed by Toyota for shorter urban journeys, i-ROAD and COMS, are regulars at Le Rendez-Vous Toyota. They have been one of the components of the public transport network around Grenoble since 2014, as part of Cité Lib by Ha:mo’s three-year experimental scheme.

‘Clean Technologies’ are also being put through their paces in competition, as shown by the TS030 Hybrid from the World Endurance Championships – now sporting Toyota Gazoo Racing’s new livery – and the EV P002 full electric racing car developed by Toyota Motorsport GmbH, which set a record on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 2011.

Besides the Toyota C-HR’s JBL demonstration, Le Rendez-Vous Toyota allows plenty of room for activities such as children’s drawing competition Dream Car Art Contest* (now in its 11th year), a reaction game to test your driving reaction times, and a photo booth to share memories of your visit.

Located in Paris at 79 Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris, Le Rendez-Vous Toyota is open from 11:00 am to 08:00 pm from Sunday to Wednesday, and from 11:00 am until 11:00 pm from Thursday to Saturday.

Toyota i-ROAD the agility of a motorcycle, the comfort of a car

Personal Mobility Vehicles are a new form of transportation which offers greater flexibility in the urban environment. They are substantially more comfortable, weatherproof, stable and safe than scooters and motorcycles.

Moreover, they not only share zero emission during operation and low running costs of an electric vehicle, but also the compact dimensions similar to a conventional two-wheeler (most notably width) essential to urban manoeuvrability and easy parking.

More user-friendly, weatherproof design

The design of the Toyota i-ROAD has been further refined over that of the concept vehicle to offer improved visibility, weatherproofing, manoeuvrability and user-friendliness.

To the side, the doors are now equipped with manually operated windows, making the i-ROAD completely weatherproof. This gives the new Toyota PMV a considerable advantage over conventional two-wheelers, allowing it to be driven without either a helmet or specialist outer clothing in all weather conditions.

The rear has been redesigned with a reduced overhang, restyled and repositioned combination lamps, and a small rear window for improved visibility when manoeuvring. The new i-ROAD is finished in a choice of five urban-chic body colours.

On-board, in conjunction with the normal accelerator and brake pedals of any city car, a more conventional, fully-round steering wheel design has been adopted to improve user-friendliness and ease of driving.

Active Lean technology and rear-wheel steering

2,345 mm long, 1,455 mm high, 870 mm wide and with a wheelbase of 1,695 mm, the revised Toyota i-ROAD is 5 mm shorter, 10 mm higher and 20 mm wider than the concept vehicle, and still boasts ultra-compact dimensions.

This equips the PMV with the ability to manoeuvre smoothly along roadsides and narrow alleys, and also makes it possible to park four i-ROADs in a single car parking bay.

The full electric powertrain of the Toyota i-ROAD remains unchanged, featuring a lithium-ion battery providing power to a pair of 1.9 kW electric motors mounted within the front wheels. Combining brisk acceleration with near-silent running, the Toyota PMV has a range of some 50 km*, after which it may be fully recharged from a conventional household power outlet in just three hours.

Key to the higher levels of stability, safety, comfort and enjoyment associated with the Toyota i-ROAD driving experience is Toyota's new, entirely intuitive 'Active Lean' technology.

Operating in conjunction with rear-wheel steering via a conventional steering wheel, the Active Lean system features a lean actuator motor and gearing mounted above the front suspension member, linked via a yoke to the left and right front wheels.

An ECU calculates the required lean based on steering angle, gyro-sensor and vehicle speed information. The system automatically moves the wheels up and down in opposite directions and is able to apply a lean angle to counteract the centrifugal force of cornering.

The system also operates when the i-ROAD is being driven straight ahead on a stepped surface, the lean actuator automatically compensating for changes in the road surface to keep the body level.

Active Lean technology delivers a unique driving experience, with all the enjoyment of two-wheeler riding, exceptional manoeuvrability and a minimum turning circle of just 3.0 metres, yet without the need for the driver to stabilise the vehicle during slow speed manoeuvres, or when stationary.

Because the system obviates the need for the driver to lower his feet to the road surface at any time, the Toyota i-ROAD may be equipped with a safer, weatherproof, closed body construction.

This not only means that the new PMV may be driven without a helmet, but also allows for a more car-like on-board environment, with the potential to benefit from such features as heating, an audio system and Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity.

Three-year real-life test in Grenoble, France

In October 2014, urban transport of the future will become a reality in the French city of Grenoble.

A partnership formed between the City of Grenoble, Grenoble-Alpes Métropole, EDF, Sodetrel, Toyota and Citélib will conduct a 3-year trial targeting an increase in the efficiency and effectiveness of public transport systems (trams, buses, trains) through their interconnectivity with full electric Personal Mobility Vehicles.

This real-life test will allow commuters in Grenoble to drive the first or last few kilometres of their trip in a PMV, whilst using public transport for the majority of their journey. This will not only increase flexibility and time-saving, but also contribute to reduced traffic congestion and improved air quality in city centres.

Connected to Grenoble's public transport IT infrastructure, this trial scheme will complement the city's current car-sharing service by allowing users to pick up a PMV at one location and drop it off at another.

By bringing together their respective competencies, the project partners aim to offer Grenoble an innovative service which will allow a thorough, real-life evaluation of the potential of this new form of mobility.

Toyota's role in this new partnership will be to provide 35 i-ROAD PMVs as part of a total fleet of 70 ultra-compact, all-electric Toyota vehicles. All vehicles may be charged at one of over 100 charging points, spread around 30 new charging stations located close to public transport stops throughout the city.

Participants in this visionary car-sharing scheme will be able to make use of two dedicated smartphone apps. One includes an intelligent route planner designed to help users reach their destination via the most efficient route and transport method, based on real-time traffic congestion information, public transport schedules and the other offers availability of PMVs. Via this app, users will also be able to submit reservations for an available PMV.

toyota news,2014 paris,2013 concept i-road

The limited trials, which aim to gauge the effectiveness of the electric vehicle in everyday situations in urban areas, will run from March 24 through early June.

The i-Road offers a novel riding experience, combining the convenience of a motorcycle with the comfort and stability of a car. The i-Road to be used in the consumer trial in Tokyo is based on the model shown as a concept at the 43rd Tokyo Motor Show 2013, but is now available in five colors and features improved visibility, ease-of-use and maneuverability.

Toyota will provide ten vehicles to approximately 20 test participants, ranging from members of the general public to trend and industry experts. Feedback will be collected concerning driving feel, user satisfaction, ease-of-use in urban areas, and impact on destination choices.

In addition to the upcoming trial in Tokyo, the i-Road has been trialed on public roads in Toyota City since early March as part of "Ha:mo"1, Toyota's urban traffic system created to explore the possibility of realizing a low-carbon society in which mobility is enhanced by technology. Toyota will continue to conduct research into ultra-compact electric vehicles for optimal short-distance travel within urban areas.

</pp:summary>

The TOYOTA i-ROAD Personal Mobility Vehicle (PMV) —a new form of transportation offering greater flexibility in the urban environment- makes its World Premiere at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

Offering a comfortable, enclosed environment for two occupants seated in tandem, the compact TOYOTA i-ROAD Electric Vehicle (EV) features unique, 'Active Lean' technology to provide a safe, intuitive and enjoyable, helmet-free driving experience over a range of up to 50 km* on a single charge.

Committed to reducing energy consumption and the environmental burden attached to transportation, Toyota has been researching and implementing environmentally-friendly mobility solutions for over 40 years in the quest for the ultimate range of eco cars, designed to suit every user profile.

Through the adaption of its Hybrid Synergy Drive® technology for use in Hybrid Vehicles (HV), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV), Electric Vehicles (EV) and Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCV), Toyota is paving the way for several types of eco car to coexist in the future.

Whilst HVs, PHEVs and FCVs are ideal for mainstream use over mid to long distances, Toyota believes in the feasibility of EVs as a primary mode of urban transportation for shorter distances. Toyota has more than 10 years experience in the research and development of PMVs.

PMV users require a vehicle that is more comfortable, more weatherproof and safer than a two-wheeler, yet still offers the benefits of low running costs, and the compact dimensions (most notably width) to facilitate the easy parking and urban manoeuvrability associated with two-wheelers such as scooters and motorcycles.

2,350 mm long, 1,445 mm height and with a wheelbase of 1,700 mm, the ultra-compact, three-wheeled TOYOTA i-ROAD's key dimension is a width of only 850 mm, about the same as that of a conventional two-wheeler. This not only equips the TOYOTA i-ROAD with the latter's ability to manoeuvre freely through even the most congested traffic, but also makes it possible to park four of the new Toyota PMVs in a single car parking bay.

The TOYOTA i-ROAD's zero-emission, all-electric powertrain features a lithium-ion battery providing power to a pair of 2 kW electric motors mounted within the front wheels. Combining brisk acceleration with near-silent running, the new Toyota PMV has a range of some 50 km[1], after which it may be fully recharged from a conventional household power outlet in just three hours.

Key to the higher levels of stability, safety, comfort and enjoyment associated with the TOYOTA i-ROAD driving experience is Toyota's new, entirely intuitive 'Active Lean' technology.

The system features a lean actuator motor and gearing mounted above the front suspension member, linked via a yoke to the right and left front wheels. An ECU calculates the required lean based on steering angle, gyro-sensor and vehicle speed information. And the system automatically moves the wheels up and down in opposite directions, applying lean angle to counteract the centrifugal force of cornering.

Offering a minimum turning circle of just 3.0 metres, the system also operates when the Toyota PMV is being driven straight ahead on a stepped surface, the lean actuator automatically compensating for changes in the road surface to keep the body level.

Requiring no specialised driving skills to operate, the Active Lean system offers a unique driving experience with all the enjoyment of two-wheeler riding and without the need for the driver to stabilise the vehicle himself during slow speed manoeuvres, or when stationary.

Because the Active Lean system obviates the need for the driver to lower his feet to the road surface at any time, the TOYOTA i-ROAD may be equipped with a safer, weatherproof, closed body construction.

This not only means that the new Toyota PMV may be driven without a helmet, but also allows for a more car-like on-board environment with the potential to benefit from such features as lighting, heating, an audio system and Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity.

Toyota envisages the TOYOTA i-ROAD's all-electric individual mobility concept playing a significant role in the reduction of both congestion and air pollution within the urban environment.

With commuters using either public transport or conventional private vehicles to travel to urban perimeter transportation hubs, they then transfer to the TOYOTA i-ROAD to complete their journeys and move within the city centre.

Its compact dimensions, manoeuvrability, easy parking, rapid charging and availability in either open or enclosed cabin format make the new Toyota PMV an ideal urban transportation solution designed to reduce both inner city congestion and CO2, NOx and particulate emissions without compromising individual freedom of mobility.
