The battery pack originates from Toyota’s electric vehicle development and enables significantly faster charging. Plug-in charging with a DC 50kW onboard charger – a rare feature for a D-segment SUV – can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in as little as 30 minutes depending on conditions. Charging at home or with standard public chargers is also quicker due to a new 11 kW AC charger which is twice as fast as the previous version, replenishing the battery in as little as three hours.

The new battery pack combines with an improved front motor – which now delivers 150 kW, a 16 kW increase – to achieve powerful acceleration. Intelligent all-wheel drive (AWD-i) specification boasts class-leading total power output of 304 DIN hp, contributing to an exhilarating 0-100 km/h time of 5.8 seconds.

As well as creating a more exciting drive, the new battery pack maintains reliable and consistent performance, even in tough conditions, thanks to improved cooling solutions. Its thermal management system switches automatically between coolant circuits depending on the operating conditions, keeping the battery at the ideal temperature to maintain optimum efficiency. It also ensures peak performance even when charging in cold conditions.

As well as performance and charging advancements, the new generation of plug-in hybrid system also contributes to enhanced driving dynamics via a lower centre of gravity and increased body rigidity, achieved thanks to the battery’s under-floor location. This has been accomplished by incorporating the DC converter into the power control unit (PCU), which has been downsized and integrated into the transaxle.

The all-new plug-in hybrid RAV4 uses its 100 km* (WLTP combined) of electric range smartly with the help of geo-fencing technology, which automatically optimises EV driving to be ready for whatever the journey brings. By combining real-time road and traffic data from cloud navigation with insights into a driver’s routine routes and driving style, the system can automatically switch between hybrid and electric modes to optimise range. If the destination is in a low emission zone, or requires travel through one, geo-fencing ensures sufficient charge to do so entirely in EV mode.

A front-wheel-drive (FWD) configuration is introduced on a plug-in hybrid RAV4 for the first time, making enhanced electrification even more accessible. It delivers 268 DIN hp of power.

In full hybrid specification, the all-new RAV4 also benefits from Toyota’s latest technology. Inside, a stylish black interior is intended to encourage focus on the road ahead. It features discreet GR logos and emotive red accents, including on the steering wheel and knee pads as well as the synthetic leather and suede seat, which is exclusive to the GR SPORT version.

Advanced software enables new safety technology

The Arene software development platform in the all-new RAV4 represents the beginning of a new era of software-defined vehicles in which advanced digital technology creates new opportunities to enhance safety and contribute to Toyota’s ultimate goal of eliminating all accidents.

Arene enables the latest Toyota T-Mate systems, including a new generation of Toyota Safety Sense, which is introduced for the very first time. This delivers a more comprehensive suite of safety and driver assistance tools as standard, performing faster than ever before.

Front Cross Traffic Alert is a new feature for the all-new RAV4. It protects the vehicle from crossing traffic at busy junctions, by detecting vehicles passing in front and issuing a visual alert before activating an audible warning if a high risk of collision is anticipated. It complements the new Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) – which alerts the driver to any vehicles they might not have seen in their side mirrors – to provide drivers with an even more comprehensive awareness of their surroundings. The BSM now also includes the new Rear Vehicle Approach Indicator, which is designed to reduce driving stress, especially on highways. When activated, it issues an audible alert when a vehicle is approaching at speed from behind, allowing time for the driver to react safely.

The new and more advanced Lane Change Assist now helps drivers to change lanes safely and conveniently during highway driving. When the driver activates the turn signal, the system ensures the manoeuvre is safe by checking whether a vehicle is present in the blind spot before steering assist automatically completes the intended lane change. Lane Change Assist functions when Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Tracing Assist are activated.

The Pre-Collision System has been upgraded by expanding head-on collision detection and improving recognition of obstacles, bicycles and motorbikes. It works by alerting the driver with audio and visual warnings, and braking assistance. If the driver is unable to slow in time, the brakes automatically engage to prevent or mitigate a collision. In the event of an impact triggering airbag deployment, the new Secondary Collision Brake automatically brings the car to a gradual stop, in case the driver is unable to do so.

The remote-controlled Advanced Park function brings more convenience by allowing the driver to control parking from a smartphone while standing outside the car. For added safety, if the user removes their finger from the device, the vehicle stops immediately. Manual parking is also simpler than ever thanks to the improved Panoramic View Monitor, which now includes a three-dimensional image to provide a more complete view of the area immediately around the vehicle.

Over the air software updates enable Toyota Safety Sense to remain up to date with latest functionalities and improvements

An all-new digital experience

The latest RAV4 marks the debut of the latest multimedia system, which is faster and more compact as part of the all-new digital ecosystem powered by Arene, which creates a seamless digital in-car experience.

A higher quality of information can be displayed via clear visuals, Google Points of Interest, and real-time navigation details such as speed cameras and Low Emission Zones (LEZ) alerts to assist the driver in respecting environmental regulations. The integration of the navigation map combined with the three-dimensional lane assistance in the driver’s 12.3” combimeter reduces potential distractions and makes directions easier to follow.

A new 12.9" home screen concept, designed with European customers in mind, gives drivers all relevant information in one view. Its intuitive, user-friendly design – with customisable shortcuts, a quick settings menu and data privacy features – makes personalising and navigating the in-car digital environment easier than ever. The digital cockpit experience is enhanced by a responsive and precise voice assistant that can handle navigation, media, in-car temperature, and vehicle control. It is a vehicle that delivers an unmatched combination of power and environmental efficiency in its class.

Its introduction strengthens and extends the appeal of the RAV4, the model which created the market for recreational SUVs and which has amassed more than 10 million worldwide sales.

Toyota has applied its leading hybrid technology expertise to create the RAV4 Plug-in, producing a vehicle that is not only powerful, but which also outperforms all its rivals in terms of low emissions and fuel economy. The model’s final homologation data indicates 22 g/m CO2 and 1.0 l/100km (Combined WLTP cycle).

RAV4 operates as an authentic electric vehicle: EV running is its default mode, in which it can cover around up to 98 km in urban driving (City WLTP cycle) on a full battery charge, comfortably more than the average European daily commute, and reach speeds of 135 km/h, with no intervention from the hybrid powertrain.

When extra engine power is needed, the capability of the 2.5-litre Dynamic Force powerplant ensures efficiency remains class-leading. Battery charging is simple and safe, and can be accomplished in 2.5 hours using a 230 V/32 A connection. As standard, owners can use the MyT app to schedule and monitor battery charging remotely and also operate the air conditioning system to warm up or cool the cabin before setting off.

Beyond its sophisticated and effective powertrain technology, the RAV4 Plug-in retains all the qualities that have made the fifth generation RAV4 so successful since its launch in late 2018. This includes the dynamic benefits of the low centre of gravity and high body rigidity inherent in the Toyota GA-K vehicle platform. It also comes as standard with AWD-i intelligent all-wheel drive.

The RAV4 Plug-in is a complementary model to the RAV4 Hybrid, consolidating Toyota’s electrification programme.

1. PERFORMANCE AND TECHNOLOGY

With the new RAV4 Plug-in, Toyota has created a vehicle with a dual DNA: one that has strong and genuine EV capabilities but which can also operate with highly efficient hybrid electric power.

Toyota has drawn on its experience of engineering two generations of the Prius Plug-in and has adopted an incremental approach to add extra performance to the efficiency of the plug-in technology. This has produced what is the most powerful model in the RAV4 range and one which delivers best-in-class performance in its segment in terms of EV driving range, CO2 emissions and fuel efficiency.

For the Prius Plug-in, the focus was on extending the EV driving range by using a larger high-voltage battery with the established 53 kW electric motor from the hybrid model. By contrast, RAV4 uses a more powerful motor together with a larger battery and inverter to gain significantly more drive power as well as the ability to cover much greater distances and travel at high speeds in EV mode.

Maximum output for the full powertrain, including the 2.5-litre Dynamic Force hybrid engine, is 306 DIN hp/225 kW – 38% more than the RAV4 Hybrid – enabling 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.0 seconds – 2.1 seconds faster than the hybrid. Drivability is improved, for example with 50% more power available at 60 km/h.

In EV mode, performance is comparable to a 2.0-litre petrol model, with 0-100 km/h acceleration in 10 seconds.

2.5-litre Dynamic Force engine

The RAV4 Plug-in’s hybrid engine is a higher output version of the 2.5-litre Dynamic Force unit featured in the hybrid model, benefiting from the higher electric power to return more power and an improved torque curve.

The 2,487 cm3, four-cylinder, 16-valve DOHC Atkinson cycle powerplant features Dual VVT-i intelligent intake (electrically controlled) and exhaust valve timing and D-4S direct/indirect fuel injection with multi-hole injectors. The long, 103.4 mm stroke and the high 14.0:1 compression ratio help gain higher output and fuel efficiency. Maximum power of 185 DIN hp/136 kW is delivered at 6,000 rpm compared to RAV4 Hybrid’s 178 DIN hp/131 kW at 5,700 rpm.

The hybrid system operates an automatic warm-up phase to help protect the petrol engine against excessive wear that might occur if it is called on to make regular cold starts when the vehicle is running at motorway speeds. Power is limited, then progressively increased. The driver is alerted to the warm-up status by the engine icon showing blue in the hybrid energy flow display.

New hybrid system

The new hybrid system delivers a class-leading combination of power and efficiency. With maximum output of 306 DIN hp/225 kW, the RAV4 Plug-in is the most powerful model in the RAV4 range and Toyota’s most powerful hybrid. At the same time, its efficiency is remarkable, with significant improvements on the levels achieved by the RAV4 Hybrid.

It is also unique in its class in offering an authentic EV drive. In fact, EV mode is the default: the hybrid engine will not intervene, giving the driver the freedom to cover around 75 km (WLTP cycle) and achieve speeds of up to 135 km/h – suitable for highway driving – with zero fuel consumption and zero tailpipe emissions. And under City WLTP cycle driving, the EV range can reach 98 km.

Depending of the battery state of charge (SOC), the vehicle will automatically switch to highly efficient hybrid operation. This is a key benefit derived from basing the plug-in system on Toyota’s highly efficient hybrid technology.

Hybrid system upgrades

Toyota has developed a more powerful hybrid system for the RAV4 Plug-in, using the compact and lightweight components of the fourth generation hybrid technology featured in the RAV Hybrid, with detailed changes to optimise performance in the context of a plug-in hybrid vehicle.

There is a new lithium-ion battery, with energy capacity increased to 18.1 kWh. It contains 96 cells and has a rated voltage of 355.2 V. An increased current allows for more power: maximum output is thus significantly higher than from the unit in the RAV4 Hybrid.

The battery is located beneath the vehicle floor, which helps lower the centre of gravity and avoids intrusion in the load space or cabin. The cells are cooled using refrigerant from the vehicle’s air conditioning system, which also helps maintain the car’s EV performance.

There is a specific change to the power control unit, too. Adding a boost converter has increased the current so that more power can be drawn from the high-voltage battery. The DC-DC converter has been made smaller, quieter and more efficient, and has better cooling performance. It is positioned beneath the rear sets, taking up less cabin space.

The front electric motor produces 134 kW (compared to 88 kW in RAV4 Hybrid); the rear motor’s output is unchanged at 40 kW. With increased support from the electric motor, the hybrid engine is able to run at low revs. This contributes to the RAV4 Plug-in’s superior noise and vibration levels (further details below).

Drive modes

The RAV4 Plug-in has four different operating modes for its plug-in hybrid system:

EV (electric vehicle) mode – the default mode

HV (hybrid vehicle) mode

Auto HV/EV mode

Charging mode

It operates by default as an electric vehicle (EV), running in EV priority mode, and will continue to run purely on its electric power, even with hard use of the accelerator pedal. When the limit of EV driving range is reached in EV mode, the vehicle automatically switches to HV mode.

The driver has the flexibility of using HV mode to start their journey, switching to EV driving to maximise efficiency when necessary, for example, when entering an urban area.

In Auto EV/HV mode, the hybrid system will automatically come into play when extra power is required, for example under sharp, sudden acceleration, EV mode being restored immediately after.

Battery charging mode helps restore the level of battery charge when the level is too low for EV operation, drawing power generation by the engine.

The sequential shiftmatic system allows the driver to use the paddle shifts on the steering wheel to gain engine braking. Further assistance is provided by Deceleration Assist Control which automatically increase drive motor deceleration torque when downhill braking is detected. This makes for a smoother drive with less use of the brakes.

Acceleration performance

The power of the plug-in hybrid system delivers a strong feeling of acceleration when driving in HV mode or auto EV/HV mode. The engine’s responsiveness and the higher output from the high-voltage battery give quick performance, with nought to 100 km/h covered in just six seconds.

The control system determines whether the driver wants a smooth, linear increase in speed, or immediate, peak response. In Sport mode, the non-linear performance gives a feeling of more immediate response to increase the level of driving pleasure.

Noise, vibration and quietness

Numerous measures have been taken to reduce noise and vibration levels experienced in the cabin and achieve quiet performance from the plug-in hybrid system.

For example, the transaxle is designed so there is less resonance from the gears. The gears themselves have polished tooth surfaces for smoother and quieter operation. A damper system reduces shock and rattle on start-up, as well as fluctuations in torque in constant-speed driving.

As explained in the Performance and Technology section above, there is less noise from the hybrid engine as it can run at lower revs compared to the RAV4 Hybrid. Noise and vibration are also suppressed by additional insulation in the wing linings and front pillars and the use of acoustic glass for the windscreen and front side windows.

Air conditioning system with heat pump

The RAV4 Plug-in’s air conditioning system operates with efficiency while still ensuring cabin comfort, even when the vehicle is in EV mode.

It uses a pump that draws thermal energy from the air outside the car to heat the cabin, so running the air conditioning has less impact on the car’s EV driving range.

The system’s efficient design includes S-FLOW control which directs heating and ventilation only to seats which are occupied – driver, front passenger and the rear seats. Performance is adjusted according to the temperature selected, the ambient temperature, cabin temperature and the amount of sunlight. Power is also saved with an “off” setting for the dehumidifier, disabling the function when it would have no effect on window misting, odours or cabin comfort.

2. DRIVING PLEASURE

The RAV4 Plug-in’s dynamic character builds on the essential strengths of its GA-K platform by taking advantage of an even lower centre of gravity.

The platform is already notable for the low centre of gravity it secures for the RAV4 Hybrid, but thanks to the lay-out of the powertrain and, in particular, the location of the high-voltage battery beneath the floor, the centre of gravity has been lowered. This strengthens the vehicle’s handling and stability and adds to its fun-to-drive quality.

The GA-K platform also adds the benefits of light weight and high body rigidity, underpinning the RAV4’s “confident and natural” drive. It takes uneven surfaces in its stride, communicating stability, and responds naturally to the driver’s inputs.

The RAV4 Plug-in uses the same double wishbone rear suspension as the hybrid model, tuned for ride comfort. Because of the low centre of gravity and high body rigidity, the suspension does not have to be made stiffer to achieve the desired dynamic performance.

Intelligent electric all-wheel drive

All versions of the RAV4 Plug-in are equipped with AWD-i, Toyota’s intelligent electric all-wheel drive system, as featured on the RAV4 Hybrid. Compact and lightweight, AWD-i uses a 40 kW electric motor on the rear axle, giving the car the all-wheel drive performance expected of an SUV, but with superior fuel efficiency compared to a mechanical system. It operates equally when the vehicle is in its default EV mode, or when running in HV mode, with support when required from the hybrid engine.

The front/rear torque ratio is automatically optimised according to driving conditions, giving better handling and stability in slippery conditions and off-road driving, keeping the plug-in hybrid faithful to the RAV4’s essential “drive on any road” character.

Trail Mode

The RAV4 Plug-in reinforces its all-wheel drive performance with Trail Mode, an automatic locking system for the limited-slip differential that the driver can engage using a dashboard control. This ensures the best possible grip on slippery and loose surfaces and can help the driver negotiate more challenging off-road conditions. For example, if one wheel loses contact with the ground, Trail Mode will brake the spinning wheel and direct drive torque to the grounded wheel to gain traction, while also automatically adjusting the throttle response and transmission shift pattern.

Drive modes

The driver can switch between NORMAL, ECO and SPORT driving modes, adjusting throttle performance to suit their preference, or the driving conditions (SPORT mode adapts both the car’s acceleration and deceleration). This selection can be made in any of the four hybrid modes, as detailed in the Performance and Technology chapter above.

3. DESIGN AND PACKAGING

Toyota has ensured that the RAV4 Plug-in’s new hybrid system is packaged without compromising comfort, space and utility in both the cabin and the load compartment.

The new model shares the same external dimensions as the RAV4 Hybrid and its powertrain is designed so that it does not intrude into the cabin. There is just a small decrease in the load space capacity, with the floor being raised by 35 mm. At 520 litres, the volume remains competitive with other models in the segment.

The boot floor is flat and has an additional storage space for the charging cable beneath the deck board. The load surface remains flat when the rear seats (divided 60:40) are folded, and a flush joint with the rear finish plate makes it easy to slide heavy items into place.

With no awkward intrusions in the side of the load area, the space is practical for carrying large items. There is room for four golf bags or two 77-litre suitcases. Towing capacity is a maximum 1.5 tonnes with a braked trailer, and there is no reduction in the size of the fuel tank, its 55-litre capacity giving the vehicle an exceptional cruising range.

Exterior design

Externally, only a few small details distinguish the RAV4 Plug-in from its hybrid sibling, reflecting its “refined sports” character. There is a metal-look finish to the lower front moulding and rear garnish above the licence plate, dark chrome detailing in the headlight units and a dark plating finish for the front grille. The rear skid plate is painted black. The charging point is concealed beneath a flap on the rear right-wing.

The RAV4 Plug-in can be fitted with larger, 19-inch wheels and larger tyres. Standard on Style grade, these have a five-double-spoke design with a contrast bright machined and black finish. The Mid grade’s 18-inch rims have a machined/dark grey five-spoke design.

The introduction of the plug-in model introduces a new body colour to the RAV4 Range, Emotional Red.

Interior design

The spacious cabin is fitted with sports seats, upholstered in dark grey cloth with contrast red stitching in the Mid grade model. The Style version has a striking two-tone red and dark grey combination of fabric and synthetic leather as standard, with the option of genuine leather with horizontal red quilting in the seatbacks and a contrast vertical red ribbon detail in the shoulder section.

The front seats have integrated heating and power adjustment and lumbar support for the driver’s seat as standard. The rear seats are also heated and the front seat ventilation and power adjustment for the front passenger seat are standard on Style+ grade.

In the combimeter in the driver’s instrument display, the water temperature indicator has been replaced with a battery level display. Specific plug-in hybrid vehicle content has also been added to the multi-information display.

In other respects, the quality and convenience of the fifth generation RAV4 is preserved, including excellent all-round vision for the driver. The GA-K platform allows for a low hip point on the driver’s seat, contributing the sense of connection with vehicle and an engaging driving experience. A generous range of seat and steering wheel adjustment makes it easy for drivers to find just the right position at the wheel.

Access to the rear seats is made easy with wide-opening rear doors and a reduced distance between the hip point and sill. Spacious footwells and air vents add to the comfort.

Equipment features

The RAV4 Plug-in introduces new equipment features and options that meet the demands of today’s customers for more sophisticated connectivity, comfort and convenience.

Notably, a 230 V/150 W power outlet is provided as standard. This can be used to power mobile devices, without having to worry about the impact on battery performance – for example running speakers for a tailgate party. Home electric appliances of 150 W or less can also be connected, for example in an emergency during a domestic power outage. There are also 12V sockets in the cabin and load space and Aux/USB sockets for connecting smartphones and music players.

Other standard features include the latest Toyota multimedia system, with smartphone integration using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and illuminated power switches in the door panels. The key fob includes a remote control for the vehicle’s air conditioning system, operated via the MyT app. Full details are given in the Connected Car chapter below.

The Style grade version of the RAV4 Plug-in has a nine-inch display audio mounted prominently on the centre console (an option for the Mid grade) and 19-inch alloy wheels. A colour head-up display is available for both model grades.

Toyota Safety Sense

As standard, the new RAV4 Plug-in benefits from the latest generation Toyota Safety Sense active safety and driver assistance systems. Designed to reduce the risk of some of the most common accidents, they alert the driver to hazards and, if necessary, provide braking and steering support to help avoid an impact, or reduce the severity if a collision is unavoidable.

In addition to detecting vehicles on the road ahead, the Pre-Collision System (PCS) can also recognise pedestrians in both day and night-time driving, and cyclists during daylight. The Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) is also more sophisticated in its operation, working with the Road Sign Assist (RSA) to automatically reset vehicle speed in line with changes in the speed limit.

The combination of Lane Departure Alert and Lane Tracing Assist helps keep the RAV4 centred in its traffic lane, providing a sound alert or steering wheel vibration if it detects deviation without the turn indicators being used, then applying steering assistance if necessary to help return the vehicle to its correct path. Recognition and control performance have been improved so that assistance is also provided through gentle bends, as well as on straight highway sections. As well as lane markings on the road surface, Lane Departure Alert can also recognise road margins.

4. SAFE AND EFFICIENT CHARGING OPTIONS

Ease of charging is a key concern for any electric vehicle. Toyota RAV4 Plug-in provides safe and efficient options that allow a full battery recharge in just two-and-a-half hours.

The vehicle is equipped with an on-board fast-charger that can support up to 6.6 kW. without compromising the battery’s durability. As standard, it is supplied with a 7.5 m Type 2 Mode 2 cable for connection to 10 A home power supply, which enables a recharge in 7.5 hours.

The charging socket on the vehicle is located on the rear right wing with a flap that automatically locks and unlocks with the vehicle doors. The inlet has heat protection and an indicator light to show when charging is in progress and completed.

For optimum speed of recharging and safety, Toyota recommends the combination of a Type 2 Mode 3 32 A cable and a wallbox unit. With this compact, integrated set-up, recharging can be accomplished in about 2.5 hours, with no impact on the customer’s domestic power supply.

Toyota will also be making a “connected” wallbox system available that can be used by customers with different cars, identified by RFiD card recognition. The unit’s connectivity will also link to services such as billing and charging history, and enable remote software updates, via the MyT app.

The design of these Toyota products is future-proofed. They are all 22 kW units that will be able to serve vehicles introduced with more powerful on-board chargers.

5. A CONNECTED CAR

The RAV4 Plug-in is the first Toyota model to give the driver remote control of vehicle functions, including the air conditioning system, via the MyT customers’ app.

Toyota’s research confirms that customers choosing to buy plug-in hybrid electric vehicles expect app-based access to their vehicle, and it has made remote functions for battery management, charging and on-board comfort part of the RAV4 Plug-in’s standard specification.

Remote charging control

The owner can schedule the charging time for the vehicle, for example setting the start time to take advantage of off-peak energy tariffs.

The MyT app also allows them to check the status of the vehicle’s battery, the current driving range and the time remaining for complete charge, information that’s particularly useful when the vehicle is connected to a public charging point. Alerts can be received to warn of a low battery charge level or any problems with the charging process.

Comfort control

The new system also allows the owner to start the car’s heating or ventilation before they get behind the wheel. A defrost setting can clear screens and warm the car so no time is wasted when leaving the house; likewise, the cabin can be cooled down ready for departure on a hot day.

The system will run for up to 20 minutes, so operation can be synchronised with the time the owner wants to begin their journey.

These functions are in addition to established MyT app services, such as sending navigation destinations to the vehicle, car-to-door directions for the last part of a journey, find-my-car location; and driving analytics. Toyota will be rolling out further services in the future to increase the connected quality of its vehicles, true to its ambition to help provide mobility for all.

toyota news,2020 rav4plug-in,RAV4,ToyotaRAV4,2019 rav4,2016 rav4,2013 rav4,2010 rav4,2006 rav4,2023 rav4,RAV4 2010

Building on RAV4’s success as a pioneer of hybrid power among SUVs, Toyota is now ready to extend the benefits of the technology with the introduction of the new RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, a new flagship vehicle for its hybrid line-up that promises to be not only more powerful but also more emissions and fuel-efficient than any other in its class.

This first plug-in hybrid-electric version of the RAV4 draws on more than 20 years of Toyota leadership in hybrid powertrain technology. It will sit at the pinnacle of the fifth generation RAV4 range, a model that has reaffirmed its historic status as one of Europe’s most popular SUVs with more than 130,000 customer orders since its launch early in 2019, including more than 115,000 hybrids (Western Europe).

The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid will offer customers a best-of-both-worlds solution. It features Toyota’s latest hybrid-electric vehicle technology, with higher power and better driving dynamics, and also has a genuine pure electric EV driving capability, free from concerns about driving range or the need to stop to recharge the battery.

Performance and efficiency

With the experience of developing two generations of its Prius Plug-in Hybrid model, Toyota is well-equipped to produce an effective new powertrain for the RAV4. With full system output of 306 DIN hp/225 kW*, it has the potential to deliver acceleration from rest to 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds*, outperforming any of its conventionally powered rivals. Moreover, it is also on course to deliver best-in-class CO2 emissions and fuel economy: Toyota’s pre-homologation, WLTP-standard data indicates CO2 output of less than 29 g/km*. These levels are unmatched by any current D-segment plug-in hybrid AWD SUV.

The new RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid is constructed on Toyota’s GA-K platform, with added dynamic benefits achieved by locating the hybrid battery beneath the floor. It is also equipped as standard with the Toyota’s AWD-i intelligent electric all-wheel drive system.

Toyota has harnessed the boost in performance electric power can deliver to achieve a significant increase in output compared to the standard RAV4 Hybrid. It has developed a new, high-capacity lithium-ion battery and added an enhanced boost converter to the hybrid system’s power control unit. The 2.5-litre Hybrid Dynamic Force petrol engine is based on the unit featured in the regular RAV4 Hybrid, with improvements to meet the performance requirements of the plug-in hybrid system.

The result is not just rapid off-the-line acceleration: the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid has a greater driving range in electric EV mode, with zero petrol consumption and exhaust emissions.

With four driving modes available, the driver can switch seamlessly from hybrid to pure EV driving. This new EV mode enables the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid to cover more than 65 km* on electric power alone (battery charge and driving conditions permitting), further than any competitor plug-in hybrid SUV and beyond the 50 km average European daily commuting distance. Moreover, speeds up to 135 km/h can be reached without any intervention of the internal combustion engine, even under full acceleration.

Intelligent hybrid battery packaging

The compact dimensions of the lithium-ion battery allow it to be contained entirely beneath the vehicle floor. With minimal intrusion in the load space, cargo capacity is a generous 520 litres. The battery’s location low in the vehicle also helps give the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid a low centre of gravity, enhancing handling stability and ride comfort.

High-efficiency heat pump air conditioning

In its scrutiny of every detail that can contribute to the overall efficient performance of the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, Toyota adopted the heat pump air conditioning system it introduced as a world-first in the current, second generation Prius Plug-in Hybrid, adapting it specifically for use in the new SUV with a hot water circuit – the same as that used in the RAV4 Hybrid. In addition, the battery is cooled by the refrigerant of the air conditioning system.

This system is far more efficient than engine heating or high-powered electric heaters, absorbing heat from the air outside the vehicle to warm the cabin.

Refined Sport design

Styling details for the exterior and the cabin demonstrate a more Refined Sport look for the mid-size SUV. At the front there is a dark plating for the dedicated grille mesh and frame and headlight extensions, together with a new metallic finish on the lower bumper moulding that emphasises the width and strength of the vehicle’s stance. New 18 and 19-inch wheel designs combine contrasting bright machined and grey or black finishes, while at the rear there is a metal-like finish for the garnish beneath the screen and black plating for the under-run.

In the cabin the focus is on new upholstery designs with a sporty feel, with ribbed patterns with contrast red detailing. Quilted black leather seats will also be available with a striking red ribbon detail. The centre console features a nine-inch multimedia touchscreen display – the largest in any RAV4 model – for clear and easy control of the car’s entertainment, information and connectivity functions.

Premium equipment specifications

Equipment specifications reflect the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid’s flagship status. According to grade, features and options will include 19-inch alloy wheels, heated front and rear seats, a 230 V power outlet in the cabin, a bi-tone exterior paint finish, power tailgate with hands-free kick sensor, panoramic roof, head-up display, nine-inch display audio system and the latest Toyota multimedia package with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

Sales schedule

The new RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid will be introduced during the second half of 2020, with on-sale dates to be determined according to country/market.

* Provisional figures subject to final homologation

toyota news,2020 rav4plug-in,Kenshiki,RAV4,2023 rav4,2019 rav4,2016 rav4,2013 rav4,2010 rav4,2006 rav4,ToyotaRAV4

Today, we are again the pioneer in innovation by creating a unique offer in the European C-SUV market.

The new RAV4 Hybrid All Wheel Drive (AWD) represents the next dimension to Toyota's feel good driving with Hybrid technology. Combining a 2.5 petrol engine with a hybrid unit and an additional electric motor to drive the rear axle, the new model brings hybrid power to the RAV4 range.

The electronic AWD provides increased safety and stability on slippery surfaces and enables a towing capacity of 1,650 kg. Easy and safe towing is ensured thanks to Trailer Sway Control system.

The reveal of the Hybrid variant coincides with the introduction of the new RAV4 which features a new exterior styling, an enhanced interior and increased levels of technology and safety equipment.

The new frontal design gives the new RAV4 a stronger road presence, and now incorporates full LED headlights. To the side, a new rocker panel has been implemented for a more flowing appeal to the side of the vehicle. At the rear, the combination lamps have been redesigned for a more sophisticated look while the bumper's new design adds visual emphasis to the vehicle's road stance.

Onboard, the sensory quality of the cabin has been significantly enhanced through the adoption of new combi-metres, featuring a full colour TFT-screen, and soft-touch materials.

The level of technological equipment has been further increased with the new 360° Panoramic View Monitor. This system visualises obstacles which, using conventional rear- or front-view camera's, would be in blind spots and helps the driver while manoeuvring by providing a live 360° view of what is around the vehicle.

The safety equipment of the new RAV4 also receives a significant upgrade thanks to the addition of Toyota Safety Sense. In addition to Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA), Auto High Beam (AHB) and Road Sign Assist (RSA), which will be launched on the new Auris and new Avensis next month, the new RAV4 will also feature Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and a Pre-Collision System (PCS) with two significant enhancements.

Firstly, for potential collisions with vehicles, PCS operates at an expanded relative speed range of between 10 km/h and the vehicle's top speed, and can reduce speed by approximately 40 km/h[1]. Secondly, the system is also able to detect potential collisions with pedestrians, in the event of which automated braking operates at relative speeds of between 10 to 80 km/h, and can reduce vehicle speed by approximately 30 km/h[2].

The New RAV4 will be available as from December while new RAV4 Hybrid AWD will arrive to European showrooms in early 2016.

The introduction of a new Hybrid powertrain -which combines power, refinement and ease-of driving with the benefit of low emissions- is a new dimension to Toyota Hybrid's feel good driving, and will bring the new RAV4 back to the top of its segment.

[1] Results achieved during testing using a vehicle travelling at 40 km/h and a stationary vehicle system operation depends on driving environment (incl. road and weather) and vehicle circumstances.

Once upon a time, the Toyota RAV4

<pp:caseid>327054</pp:caseid>

When the first generation RAV4 was revealed at Geneva Motor Show in March 1994, it heralded a new era for 4x4s. Sales started in Japan in May and throughout Europe, Africa, Australia and Latin America in June. Initial production estimates were 4,500 sales a month. But, when 8,000 orders were received in the first month, production volumes were doubled. The first Recreational Active Vehicle with 4 wheel-drive paved the way for the SUV segment that hasn't stopped to grow since.

Launched as a compact, 3-door model, the first "Urban 4WD" was quite different to a traditional 4x4. It featured a relatively small 2.0 litre engine mounted transversally within a monocoque bodyshell, and all-round independent suspension. At 3.69 m long, it was shorter than today's B-segment vehicles. This was a truly pioneering new car.

The starting idea

It was the RAV-FOUR concept car at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show that first indicated Toyota's direction to create a compact 4WD model. This showcar was no more than a design study, lacking the detail required for an actual development model. But it was welcomed by unanimous enthusiasm from the public and eventually in March 1991 the project was given the green light, and the actual development of the first RAV4 began.

A new approach but a difficult birth

But at that time, for Chief Engineer Masakatsu Nonaka, it was not easy to convince the other Toyota departments that it would be possible to create a mass production car that should be sold in a segment that so far did not exist. This was at a time when the phrase "Sports Utility Vehicle" was still unknown and there were many within Toyota who simply could not conceive such a compact 4x4. At one point, the development even stalled due to internal resistance. The development team was about to give up when support from an unexpected direction breathed new life into the project.

It was the Japanese and European Sales Division that came to the rescue. Being in close contact with the market, they felt that the time was right for this type of car. Jointly, they pushed the project back on the tracks and they were proven right: shortly after its launch, the RAV4 has been soon recognized as a trendsetter for its fresh and excellent driving performance.

From a niche model to a global car

Toyota can rightfully claim to have created the compact SUV market with the launch of its first Recreational Active Vehicle with 4 Wheel-Drive (RAV4) in 1994. That year, Toyota sold 53,000 units of his RAV4. Multiplied by 2 the year after, the figure has been tripled in 1995 and steadily grown generation after generation. In 2013, the number of sales should represent 10 times the sales result of 1994.

In total, more than 5 million RAV4 have been sold in the world of which more than 1.3 million in Europe. And more than 90% of those are still on the road today.

However, competition also increased over these 20 years: in 2010 there were 10 different models in the compact SUV segment today there are 19 to choose from.

The compact SUV segment is one of the few still growing in Europe, with sales increasing by some 36% between 2008 and 2013. In 2013, Western European segment sales totalled 848,000 units, with a further 387,000 vehicles sold in Russia.

The Fourth Generation RAV4

Since 1994, the segment has not only grown, it has also changed and matured. Where the early customers often used to buy compact SUVs as an alternative to sporty hatchbacks or coupés, today's growth of the SUV market is fuelled by families looking for a more fun and fashionable alternative to MPVs and estates.

Whilst keeping the design and fun-to-drive aspects of the first generation of RAV4, the fourth generation has evolved to capture that trend.

Existing RAV4 customers from Europe, China and North America were interviewed to understand what they most appreciated about Toyota's compact SUV. They cited good manoeuvrability, ease of access linked to an elevated view of the road, ingenious packaging, versatility, and reassuring capability, even in tough conditions.

The new RAV4 reflects this stronger emphasis on family use without sacrificing any of the model's core values -manoeuvrability, versatility, an elevated view of the road and accomplished on- and off-road capabilities.

Rather, it offers customers stronger, more sophisticated and dynamic styling, refined, premium-quality interior design, greater cabin room and loadspace capacity, and enhanced comfort, versatility and safety.

Equipped with new powertrains, the new RAV4 combines the widest engine line-up yet offered with an average reduction in CO2 emissions of 11% across the entire model range compared to the previous generation.

In conjunction with a new, more focused driving position, retuned front and rear suspension systems, revised Electric Power Steering and a newly developed Sport mode for its advanced, all-wheel drive, Integrated Dynamic Drive System, the new RAV4 delivers greater stability and agility on both wet and dry roads for a more engaging driving experience.

This is particularly true in Sport Mode when the cornering control increases rear wheel torque distribution up to 10% by detecting the steering angle. Yaw-rate feedback control then precisely adjusts the rear wheel torque depending on the vehicle yaw-rate. As a result the 4th generation RAV4 is more at ease than ever on daily roads, whilst remaining as competent as always off-road.

Upgraded equipment and new technology, including Toyota Touch 2 and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) system

</pp:summary>

Launched in 2013, the fourth generation of Toyota's classic compact SUV responded to evolving C-SUV customer requirements with more sophisticated styling, premium quality interior design, further enhancements to its all-wheel drive capabilities and a more engaging drive.

Now, the 2014 RAV4 model range further strengthens its position at the heart of the C-SUV market with an expanded all-wheel drive powertrain line-up, new exterior and interior colour and trim designs, enhanced equipment levels and new technology.

New 2.0 D-4D powertrain with All-Wheel Drive

A new all-wheel drive version of the RAV4 combines the Euro 5 compliant 2.0 litre D-4D turbodiesel with the Integrated Dynamic Drive System, Toyota's advanced all-wheel drive technology.

The Integrated Dynamic Drive System is a sophisticated, high-speed interactive management system which coordinates control of the RAV4's Dynamic Torque Control AWD, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems to enhance performance, handling and safety under all driving conditions.

Using information from various sensors (speed, steering angle, and yaw rate), the Dynamic Torque Control AWD system continuously controls the torque transfer between the front and rear wheels via an electromagnetically controlled coupling positioned in front of the rear differential.

Front to rear torque distribution can vary from 100:0 to 50:50, with front-wheel drive (100:0) automatically engaged under normal driving conditions to improve fuel consumption.

For off-road driving, the system incorporates an AWD Lock button. This allows drivers to lock torque distribution in a fixed, 50:50 ratio to speeds up to 40 km/h. Above this speed, the system automatically revers to Normal mode.

Mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, the 1,998 cc engine develops 124 hp / 91 kW at 6,000 rpm, and 310 Nm of torque between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm. The powertrain generates CO2 emissions of just 136 g/km[1].

New Exterior and Interior Colour and Trim Designs

The 2014 RAV4 will be available in a new, prestigious Dark Brown Metallic body colour. A striking new, angular, 10-spoke 18" alloy wheel design combines machine faced and painted finishes, whilst a range of 18" wheel designs is now available for front-wheel drive models.

The interior may now be finished in a choice of 4 colour schemes: Black, Grey, Terracotta and new Beige. The Black fabric and Grey leather interior designs have been retained.

The revised Terracotta design showcases a black background highlighted by a contrasting Terracotta finish to the main dashboard panel, central door panels, and the side bolsters of both the seat bases and backrests, for a more sophisticated appearance.

A brand new Beige colour scheme features two-tone, premium quality leather seats and a leather finish to the main dashboard panel and central door panels.

Upgraded Equipment and new Technology

The 2014 RAV4 is further enhanced by equipment upgrades, the availability of new technology and an expanded options list.

A multimedia upgrade incorporates Toyota Touch 2, an updated system featuring a new, 6" full colour WVGA touch screen with improved resolution, a new Drag and Flick function, and six additional languages.

Smart Entry and Start is now available as an option on Active grade models, in conjunction with a power-operated tailgate. An 8 channel, 9 speaker, 440 Watt JBL Premium sound system is now available as an option on Lounge grade models. And a new Geneva 'Premium' Pack -available with or without leather upholstery- adds a rear under-run and a chrome finish on the side sills and the tailgate.

Both safety and driver convenience are further enhanced by the availability of a new Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) system.

The RCTA system employs the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) radar to alert the driver backing out of a parking space to approaching vehicles which may not be visible in either the rear view monitor or door mirrors. When approaching vehicles are detected, the system flashes the indicator lights on the door mirrors and also sounds a warning buzzer.

The 4th generation of Toyota's pioneering compact SUV makes its European debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show

All-new, sophisticated, dynamic and strong exterior design with signature Toyota design elements

New interior design with best in class roominess, increased comfort and superior luggage capacity to meet the needs of active families

Enhanced powertrain range with improved performance and reduced fuel consumption and emissions

New Integrated Dynamic Drive System to improve on-road dynamic performance and deliver a more engaging driving experience

Higher safety levels with new technologies and a 5-Star Euro NCAP 2013 rating

Toyota created the compact SUV market with the launch of its first Recreational Active Vehicle with 4 Wheel-Drive (RAV4) in 1994. Since then, three generations of RAV4 have sold more than 4.5 million units, of which European markets have accounted for over 1.2 million sales.

Making its European debut at the 2013 Geneva motor show, the new, fourth generation RAV4 reflects the stronger emphasis placed on family use by the compact-SUV market, without sacrificing any of the model's core values.

Rather, it offers customers more distinctive, sophisticated styling, refined, premium-quality interior design, further enhancements to its all-wheel drive capabilities and a more engaging drive.

Design and Packaging

Longer (+205[1] mm), wider (+30 mm) but lower (-25 mm) than its predecessor, the fourth generation of Toyota's compact, versatile SUV showcases an all new silhouette that emphasizes its versatility, roominess and improved dynamic capabilities.

The all-new exterior combines the sophisticated, stylish signature elements of the new Toyota frontal design language with clean, frill-free aesthetics and the muscular image of durability expected from a vehicle with its class-leading four-wheel drive credentials.

The new face of Toyota combines the company's Under Priority grille design with Keen Look headlamp and LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) detailing to give the new SUV a powerful, more dynamic and agile-looking road presence.

Combining a spacious, comfortable cabin with a cockpit-like driver's environment, the all-new interior design build's on the RAV4's inherent practicality with greater roominess, higher quality finishes and a more focused, engaging SUV driving experience.

In keeping with the more cockpit-like driver's environment, the driving position of the new RAV4 has been extensively revised for improved ergonomics, greater comfort, better forward visibility and a more engaging driving experience.

The driver's seat hip point has been lowered by 5 mm and downward seat height adjustment range has been increased by 15 mm to 30 mm. The steering wheel angle has been lowered by 2.3 degrees and it is now closer to the driver by up to 38 mm.

With a front to rear seat couple distance now a best-in-class 970 mm, roominess in the rear seats is now one of the outstanding features of the model. The 60:40 split folding rear seat has been made more comfortable, benefitting from a rise in cushion surface angle of 2 degrees and revised side bolsters for improved support.

The RAV4 retains all the practical, flexible versatility its customers have come to expect from the compact SUV. The rear seats can be folded down flush with the loadspace floor without the need to remove any seat cushions or headrests.

The rear seats may be split 60:40 for maximum flexibility and each section can be reclined independently.

The length of the loadspace has increased to 1,025 mm, raising luggage capacity to 547 litres. Undertray storage has also increased by 51 litres from 49 to 100 litres (with tyre repair kit).

The side-hung tailgate has been replaced by a top-hinged version, which may be equipped with power operation. At 645 mm (with repair kit or temporary tyre), the new tailgate opening boasts a remarkable low loadspace lip height, as well as a wide aperture of 1,158 mm.

Powertrains

Featuring two new engines - a 2.0 litre D-4D diesel for the Western European market and a 2.5 litre VVT-i petrol unit for the Russian market- and with a 2.2 litre D-4D diesel engine now available in Russia for the first time, the new RAV4's comprehensive engine range offers an unmatched balance between outstanding, front- and four-wheel drive performance and class-leading CO2 emissions in all petrol and diesel variants.

The Western European powertrain line up now comprises a 151 DIN hp (111 kW) 2.0 litre Valvematic petrol engine, a new 124 DIN hp (91 kW) 2.0 litre D-4D diesel, and a powerful 150 DIN hp (110 kW) 2.2 litre D-4D diesel engine.

Every engine in this new line-up benefits from reductions in CO2 emissions, averaging some 11% across the West European powerplant range.

Of particular note, the 2.0 litre D-4D diesel, front-wheel drive derivative new to the RAV4 range is equipped with Toyota's Stop & Start System technology, reducing CO2 emission to only 127 g/km.

All markets except Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Caucasus

Driving Performance

Successive generations of RAV4 have established a reputation for their ride comfort, ease of driving, manoeuvrability and reassuring capabilities on even the most challenging of road surfaces.

In conjunction with a new, more comfortable and focused driving position, the new RAV4 builds on these key SUV attributes with retuned front and rear suspension systems, revised Electric Power Steering, and a New Integrated Dynamic Drive System with all-new Sport mode function.

In combination, these developments give the new RAV4 greater stability and agility on both wet and dry roads, offering customers a confidence-inspiring, more intuitive and engaging driving experience.

The Integrated Dynamic Drive System is a sophisticated, high-speed interactive management system which coordinates control of the RAV4's new Dynamic Torque Control AWD, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems to enhance the compact SUV's performance, handling and safety.

The Dynamic Torque Control AWD system now automatically transfers torque to the rear wheels not only when the front wheels are beginning to spin on slippery surfaces (as in the third generation RAV4), but also when the system detects understeer during cornering on-road. As a result, the overall agility and driving performance of the vehicle is enhanced during both on- and off-road driving.

When Sport mode is selected, torque transfer to the rear wheels begins even before understeer develops. From the moment the steering wheel is turned, the Dynamic Torque Control AWD System operates a pre-torque control, automatically introducing a 90:10 front/rear torque distribution to help cornering force by transferring traction torque to rear.

</pp:summary>

Successive generations of RAV4 have established a reputation for their ride comfort, ease of driving, manoeuvrability and reassuring capabilities on challenging road surfaces.

In conjunction with a new, more comfortable and focused driving position, the new RAV4 builds on these key attributes, retuned front and rear suspension systems, revised Electric Power Steering, and a newly developed Sport mode for its advanced, all-wheel drive, Integrated Dynamic Drive System.

In combination, these developments give the new RAV4 greater stability and agility on both wet and dry roads, offering customers a confidence-inspiring, more intuitive and engaging driving experience.

The new RAV4 is also available with both Down-hill Assist and Hill Start Assist Control. Fitted as standard to all vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, Down-hill Assist Control automatically regulates gear selection, engine speed and the individual wheel braking capabilities of the ABS system to help the driver maintain a constant speed during both on- and off-road descents.

Bodyshell Construction

The adoption of high and ultra-high tensile steel in the construction of the bodyshell allows for the use of thinner sheet with no loss of strength, thus reducing weight to enhance fuel efficiency.

It has been used more widely throughout the new RAV4, including in such strategic locations as the reinforcement of the front cowl attached to the A pillars, the rear axle braces and the rear suspension coil spring upper supports.

Body rigidity has been improved through an increase in the number of spot welding points around both front and back door openings, enhancing yaw and steering response.

Retuned Front and Rear Suspension Systems

The new RAV4 shares the MacPherson strut front and lightweight trailing arm double wishbone rear suspension of its predecessor. However, both systems have been revised to optimise ride comfort whilst enhancing steering feel.

The spring rate of the front suspension has been revised. The increased rigidity of the front suspension member stabilizer bracket promotes a smoother steering feel when cornering. Contributing to both enhanced steering feel and improved ride comfort, friction in the inner structure of the shock absorber has been reduced, the characteristics of the stabiliser bushes have been optimised, and friction within them reduced through the use of a fluorine coating.

Similar measures have been adopted for the rear suspension system. The spring rate has been revised, and the diameter of the stabiliser bars increased to optimise the front/rear distribution of roll rigidity. The rear shock absorber and stabiliser bushes benefit from the same revisions as those made to the front suspension.

Revised Electric Power Steering

Both the installation and the ECU control of the Electric Power Steering (EPS) have been revised to combine a more comfortable driving position with improved steering precision and feel.

The steering column has been tilted downward by 1 degree, and the installation angle of the new steering wheel has been changed from 27.6 to 25.3 degrees, moving it closer to the driver.

The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and EPS have been integrated to reduce vehicle weight, and the adoption of a resin-coat intermediate shaft and revised software compliance has improved steering precision and feel.

Integrated Dynamic Drive System

The new RAV4 is available with either front-wheel drive or the Integrated Dynamic Drive System, an upgraded version of Toyota's advanced all-wheel drive technology featuring a new Sport mode.

The Integrated Dynamic Drive System is a sophisticated, high-speed interactive management system which coordinates control of the RAV4's Dynamic Torque Control AWD, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems to enhance the compact SUV's performance, handling and safety.

Using information from various sensors (speed, steering angle and yaw rate), the Dynamic Torque Control AWD system continuously controls the torque transfer between the front and rear wheels via an electromagnetically controlled coupling positioned in front of the rear differential.

Front to rear torque distribution can vary from 100:0 to 50:50, with front-wheel drive (100:0) automatically engaged under normal driving conditions to improve fuel consumption.

In normal mode -when neither Sport mode nor Lock mode are activated- torque transfer to the rear wheels now takes place not only when the front wheels are beginning to spin on slippery surfaces (as in the third generation RAV4) but also when the system detects understeer during cornering on road. As a result, the overall agility and driving performance of the vehicle is enhanced during both on- and off-road driving.

When the new Sport mode is selected, torque transfer to the rear wheels begins even before understeer develops. From the moment the steering wheel is turned, the Dynamic Torque Control AWD System operates a newly developed pre-torque control, automatically introducing a 90:10 front/rear torque distribution to help cornering force by transferring traction torque to rear.

If actual understeer develops, torque transfer to the rear wheels is automatically increased by up to 50% through a new yaw rate feedback control, to provide front tyres with improved lateral grip.

As well as activating the 'Dynamic' behaviour of the system's front to rear torque transfer, the new Sport mode also decreases the RAV4's power steering assistance by 20% and, depending on version, sharpens throttle response and offers higher revs for a more dynamic, sporting driving experience.

For off-road driving, the system incorporates an AWD Lock button. This allows drivers to lock torque distribution in a fixed, 50:50 ratio at speeds up to 40 km/h. Above this speed, the system automatically reverts to Normal mode.

From Integrated Active Drive System to Integrated Dynamic Drive System

The third generation RAV4 used Integrated Active Drive System, in which torque control was managed by an Active Torque Control 4WD system. The new RAV4 now uses a Dynamic Torque Control AWD System.

Compared to the third generation car, the new RAV4 keeps the following functions:

- Starting Control: traction performance when starting on snowy or muddy roads is ensured by increasing the rear torque distribution up to 50%. At speed above 25 km/h, the driving control switches to normal driving control.- Normal driving control: on highways or urban roads, the rear torque distribution is reduced to 0% to enhance fuel efficiency. When detecting slippery roads in which wheel skidding occurs, torque control is immediately activated to ensure driving stability.- VSC co-operative control: When the front wheels skid and the vehicle runs outside the driver's intended path, EPS assists for the turning direction (by creating a torque in the steering wheel in order to show to the driver the right manoeuvre to do ), and torque is distributed to the rear wheels.- Braking control: AWD is cancelled to enhance the effects of ABS a and the VSC System.- Lock mode control: when the driver pushes the LOCK mode switch. 50% of torque is transmitted to each axle to enhance escape performance in situations such as when the vehicle is stuck.

The new function added on top of these 5 control modes is:

- Cornering control: Yaw rate feedback control is used to adapt rear wheel torque to assist cornering performance by generating optimal drive force distribution and balancing the load between front/rear wheels. With Sport mode, from the first steering input, 10% of the torque is directed to the rear wheels at the start of the corner which can increase to a maximum of 50% during cornering to ensure driving stability and a fun to drive experience.

Thanks to cornering control, Sport mode helps the driver to maintain his intended trajectory and, at the end, have more enjoyable driving experience.

toyota news,2013 rav4

Substantial NVH reduction measures through new Engine Bay Barrier design concept for better cabin quietness

Comprehensive safety features targeting 5-star Euro NCAP rating

New RAV4 may also be equipped with three new technologies: Automatic High Beam, Lane Departure Alert and Blind Spot Monitor systems

</pp:summary>

Low NVH measures

The new RAV4 incorporates a substantial range of measures to suppress the transmission of noise and vibration into the cabin, resulting in increased quietness for all occupants.

Under a new engine bay barrier design concept, extensive improvements have been made to the sound proofing qualities of the dashboard, dashboard inner and outer silencers, the cowl insulator and the bonnet insulator, reducing the transmission of engine noise to the cabin.

Additional sound-proofing materials have been optimally positioned throughout the new RAV4. They include foamed material introduced within cabin pillars, as well as the door sill and head sections, to minimise the transmission of noise through the bodyshell. Both a spray-application underfloor damping material and front and rear fender liners reduce the transmission of noise.

Noise has been reduced by the adoption of an acoustic windscreen which features an additional layer of acoustic film to reduce noise transmission. The aerodynamic shaping of the door mirrors further reduces wind noise.

Various measures have been also been adopted to reduce the transmission of vibration to the cabin. Body panels that generate noise have been identified and fitted with vibration damping materials, front and rear suspension mounting points have been stiffened, and the shape of the steering knuckles optimised to improve the vibration characteristics of the front suspension and reduce road noise.

SAFETY

The new RAV4 builds on the high standards of occupant safety and pedestrian impact protection evolved over three generations of the compact Toyota SUV, with even higher levels of active and passive safety.

With an impact absorbing, multi-load-path body construction designed to help provide occupant protection, the new RAV4 has been engineered to achieve a 5-Star rating in the 2013 Euro NCAP crash test programme.

The new Toyota SUV is equipped with a new, whiplash injury reducing seat design, and 7 airbags are fitted as standard, including a driver's knee airbag and twin-chamber front seat side airbags.

Active safety systems include ABS with EBD, BA, VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) and TRC (Traction Control), and all-wheel drive models are equipped, as standard, with VSC+, which integrates VSC and the vehicle's Electric Power Steering (EPS)

The new RAV4 may also be equipped with three new technologies —an Automatic High Beam system, a Lane Departure Alert system and a Blind Spot Monitor system- further raising standards of safety and driver convenience.

Automatic High Beam system

The Automatic High Beam system employs a camera to monitor the road ahead and automatically switches the headlamps from high to low beam when it detects either a preceding or oncoming vehicle.

Lane Departure Alert system

The Lane Departure Alert system employs a lane recognition camera sensor mounted at the head of the windscreen to determine if the vehicle is unintentionally leaving its lane. The system then alerts the driver via an audible warning buzzer and a flashing line icon in the multi-information display.

Blind Spot Monitor system

The Blind Spot Monitor system notifies drivers of a vehicle travelling in an adjacent lane in their blind spot by illuminating the relevant indicator mounted in the outer door mirror surface. The system uses radar sensors mounted on both sides of the rear of the new RAV4, which monitor the blind area of the driver. If the turn signal lamp switch is in operation, the indicator will flash at fixed intervals to alert the driver.

toyota news,2013 rav4

2.0 Litre D-4D Diesel Engine

Equipped with a compact, variable nozzle turbocharger, the new, 4-cylinder 1,998 cc diesel engine develops 124 DIN hp (91 kW) at 3,600 rpm and generates a maximum 310 Nm of torque from 1,600 to 2,400 rpm, 300 Nm of which is available at only 1,400 rpm.

Mated to a 6-speed manual transmission with front-wheel drive, it equips the new RAV4 with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 10.5 seconds and a maximum speed of 180 km/h.

The engine has been specifically developed to be highly fuel efficient, and incorporates numerous measures to reduce friction, weight and energy consumption.

It features an oil pump which uses an electronically-controlled variable hydraulic pressure system to reduce engine friction and enhance fuel efficiency. The oil pan itself is of a twin tank design which warms the oil more quickly, further improving fuel efficiency. The timing chain design combines light weight with low friction further contributing to fuel efficiency. And both the cylinder head cover and oil cooler bracket are fabricated in resin to save weight.

The adoption of Toyota's Stop & Start system has a further, marked impact on fuel efficiency and emissions control, lowering average fuel consumption to only 4.9 l/100 km, and reducing CO2 emissions to just 127 g/km.

2.2 Litre D-4D Diesel Engine

The powerful, 4-cylinder 2,231 cc D-4D diesel engine features a variable nozzle turbocharger and a common-rail fuel injection system with piezo injectors. A TCCS (Toyota Computer Controlled System) incorporates a 32-bit processor for accurate, simultaneous control of fuel injection, injection timing, fuel pressure, glow relay and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR).

The unit develops 150 DIN hp (110 kW) at 3,600 rpm and maximum torque of 340 Nm at between 2,000 and 2,800 rpm. It may be mated to a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive.

The adoption of scissor-driven, two-axle balance shafts and a resin cylinder head cover suppress engine vibration and reduce noise. The use of an aluminium cylinder block and the integration of the water and oil pumps within an aluminium chain cover offer significant weight reduction. And a roller rocker arm with built-in needle bearings significantly reduces friction to enhance fuel economy.

As a result, the fuel consumption and emissions of engines fitted with a manual transmission have reduced by 7.5% to 5.6 l/100 km and 147 g/km respectively, whilst those of automatic versions have reduced by 7% to 6.6 l/100 km and 173 g/km.

2.0 Litre Valvematic Petrol Engine

The lightweight, compact, 4-cylinder 1,987 cc, 16 valve petrol engine develops 151 DIN hp (111 kW) at 6,200 rpm. Maximum torque of 195 Nm is generated at 4,000 rpm.

The unit is equipped with Valvematic —Toyota's continuously variable intake valve lift mechanism, Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent), a variable length intake manifold system and a variable output oil pump. These highly efficient, lightweight and clean-emission technologies increase power output whilst reducing fuel consumption and emissions, and minimising noise and vibration.

The engine may be mated to a choice of 6-speed manual or Multidrive S transmissions, and all-wheel drive.

Fuel consumption and emissions have been reduced by some 6%, the former returning 7.2 l/100 km and generation CO2 emissions of 167 g/km, the latter identical fuel consumption and emissions of 166 g/km.

TRANSMISSIONS

The new RAV4 offers customers a choice of 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic and Multidrive S transmissions.

6-speed Manual Transmissions

Two 6-speed manual transmissions are available —one for the 2.0 litre petrol engine, the other for the 2.0 and 2.2 litre D-4D diesel units. The latter is fitted with a triple cone synchroniser for 1st to 3rd gears, and a double cone synchroniser for 4th gear, reducing the shift force required to give a smoother gear change.

6-speed Automatic Transmission

Available with the 2.2 litre D-4D diesel engine, the 6-speed Super ECT (Electronically Controlled Transaxle) automatic transmission is designed to combine high driving performance with low fuel consumption.

Combining steering wheel-mounted paddle shift override with Auto, Manual and Sport modes, the transmission features AI (Artificial Intelligence)-SHIFT Control, which automatically changes shift patterns in response to driving behaviour and road conditions.

It is also equipped with complete lock-up control in 2nd gear and above, enabling changes in engine output to be transmitted directly to the transaxle as with a manual gearbox and blipping downshift control for a smoother, more engaging driving experience an Manual and Sport modes.

Multidrive S Transmission

Multidrive S is Toyota's highly-advanced Continuously Variable Transmission system. Delivering an infinite number of ratios through two cone-shaped pulleys and a high-strength steel belt, Multidrive S offers an incredibly smooth, seamless driving experience.

Because the Multidrive S transmission maintains the most efficient engine rpm at any given vehicle speed, it combines low cruising-speed noise with low CO2 emission and high fuel efficiency, yet can also maintain the ideal ratio to deliver peak engine power for maximum performance.

A 'Sport' button selects a more responsive, power-maximising ratio, delivering a more engaging driving experience. Multidrive S also features a sequential, manual 7-speed mode, with gear selection performed either by the gear shift lever of steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts. With the gearshift lever in the 'D' position, drivers can also use the paddle shifts to temporarily override the automatic mode.

toyota news,2013 rav4

</pp:summary>

Sophisticated, Dynamic and Strong Exterior Design

205 mm longer than its predecessor (without spare wheel carrier on the rear gate) at 4,570 mm overall, the fourth generation of Toyota's compact, versatile SUV showcases an all-new silhouette that emphasises its versatility, roominess, sporting character and improved dynamic capabilities.

The new model is 25 mm lower than the third generation RAV4, 30 mm wider, boasts a significant, 100 mm increase in wheelbase length, yet still delivers a class-leading turning circle of only 10.6 metres, ensuring good manoeuvrability and ease to drive in urban traffic.

The all-new exterior combines the sophisticated, stylish signature elements of the new Toyota frontal design language with clean, aesthetics and the muscular image of durability expected from a vehicle with its class-leading four-wheel drive credentials.

The new face of Toyota combines the company's Under Priority grille design with Keen Look headlamp and LED Daytime Running Light (DRL) detailing to give the new SUV a powerful, more dynamic and agile-looking road presence.

The Under Priority design features a large, trapezoidal lower opening within the front bumper, and a smaller upper grille running full width between the new headlamps.

Projecting forward from the centre of the sweeping bonnet line, the Toyota badge dominates the upper grille, which features a central, chrome-plated horizontal trim bar visually extended into the headlamp clusters to accentuate the width of the vehicle.

The horizontal, chrome—plated trim bar flows into an 'eyebrow' form within narrow, purposeful headlamp clusters, combining with new, LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) and projector lamps positioned at the very extremities of the vehicle to create the distinctive Toyota Keen Look glare and a unique visual signature for the new RAV4.

Flanked by integral foglamp housings, the trapezoidal form of the large lower bumper opening is emphasised by a contrasting black resin finish.

In profile, the new RAV4 inherits the combination of space-efficient packaging, rising belt-line and distinctive silhouette that has hallmarked successive generations of Toyota's compact SUV.

Above a more pronounced belt-line, blacked out B and C pillars emphasise the lengthened glasshouse and the vehicle's interior roominess. Below, the contrast of convex body surfacing and sharply concave treatment to the pronounced wheel arches and door sills brings added dynamism and strength to the new RAV4 silhouette.

To the rear, the cabin tapers strongly inwards, contrasting with the width of the lower body and creating muscular shoulders over the rear wheel arches to emphasis the vehicle's, stable, planted stance.

The increased strength of the belt-line and wheel arch shoulder at the rear of the car is further emphasised by a new rear combination lamp design which is generated by the proportions of the rear shoulder and flows around the corner of the vehicle to underscore the tailgate glazing.

Topped with an integral roof spoiler, the new tailgate itself is now top-hinged, and the rear gate mounted spare wheel has been removed to complete the new RAV4's cleaner, more aerodynamically efficient design.

The vehicle may be equipped with a choice of 17" or 18" wheels.

The new RAV4 will be available in a choice of nine body colours, including 3 new to the model range: Greyish Blue, Green and Black.

Improved Aerodynamic Performance

The new RAV4 has been styled using an 'Air Management' design approach for improved aerodynamics. This results in greater handling stability and enhanced fuel efficiency.

Front and rear aerocorners, and aerodynamically optimised wheel caps and door mirrors minimise turbulence and stabilise airflow along the sides of the body. Based on advanced, Formula 1 technology, 'Sakana' fins located on the door mirror bases and rear combination lamps accelerate airflow along the body, enhancing vehicle stability and control.

The cabin has been tapered towards the rear, and the angles of the rear screen, roofline and its integral spoiler have been optimised to stabilise airflow over the upper body, further minimising turbulence and reducing drag.

Cabin quietness- and stability-enhancing air management measures to the underbody are equally comprehensive. They include front and rear wheel spats, an engine undercover, numerous floor undercovers, a fuel tank protector, rear suspension lower arm covers and a rear undercover.

In conjunction with the new RAV4's reduced frontal projection, these aerodynamic improvements to several aspects of the bodyshell have lowered the vehicle's coefficient of drag to just Cd 0.31.

Innovative, Higher Quality Interior Design

Combining a spacious, comfortable cabin with a cockpit-like driver's environment, the all-new interior design builds on the RAV4's inherent practicality with greater roominess, higher quality finishes and a more focused, engaging SUV driving experience.

The dynamic, bold architecture of the new dashboard features powerful, upper and lower horizontal beams which emphasise the new cabin's spacious, open atmosphere. Rooted in the transmission tunnel, a curved, metal-finish spar interrupts the horizontal beams to frame the driver's instrument binnacle, steering wheel and footwell, reinforcing the new RAV4 interior's more driver-focused credentials.

The clean, sophisticated elegance of the new design is further strengthened by the use of high quality materials, soft padding in many areas of occupant contact, crisp trim finishes and new colours throughout.

The leading edge of the upper dashboard horizontal beam is trimmed with a metallic finish, whilst the lower beam takes the form of a sweeping, soft padded, synthetic leather clad panel, matched by identical treatment to the upper door panels.

Silver painted trim accents highlight the driver's instruments, air vents, centre console instruments and gear lever, and both door switch panels and the transmission tunnel are finished with simulated carbon-fibre panels.

All instrument and switchgear back-lighting is now a Clear Blue colour a crisp, cool after-dark illumination which brings sophistication and a powerful visual consistency to the new interior.

Based on a 'colour block' concept that has evolved from the current two-tone design, the instrument panel ornamentation, door trim and seats have been designed using colour combinations that highlight the shape and material of each element to bring greater strength and dynamism to the appearance of the interior.

Focused, Ergonomic Driving Position

In keeping with the more cockpit-like driver's environment, the driving position of the new RAV4 has been extensively revised for improved ergonomics, greater comfort, better forward visibility and a more engaging driving experience.

The driver's seat hip point has been lowered by 5 mm and downward seat height adjustment range has been increased by 15 mm to 30 mm. The steering wheel angle has been lowered by 2.3 degrees, and reach adjustment towards the driver increased by up to 38 mm.

The increased seat height adjustment range allows not only to reach a lower and more engaging driving position, but also, at the driver's choice, a higher driving position that improves the front visibility.

Combining greater comfort and holding performance with increased adjustability, the seat itself features a cushion contact area increase of 20 mm, a cushion angle raised by 2 degrees with the side bolster positioned relatively higher for improved support, a seatback contact area increase of 30 mm and taller, thicker side bolsters for improved lateral support.

Sports seats, fitted as standard on mid and high grades models, offer even greater levels of support.

Furthermore, the visible length of the bonnet has increased by 170 mm, enhancing driver visibility during low speed manoeuvring. The A pillars have been repositioned to a more outward location, increasing the driver's forward field of vision by 3 degrees, and the cross-sectional width of the pillars themselves has been reduced by 8%.

Greater Space and Versatility

Though retaining the compact exterior dimensions essential to manoeuvrability, the new RAV4's overall increase in length of 205 mm (vs short wheel base without spare wheel carrier on the rear gate) and its increase in wheelbase length of 100 mm equip it with significant additional interior space, bringing passenger roominess and loadspace up to a par with larger, D segment vehicles.

The front to rear seat couple distance has increased up to a best-in-class 970 mm. This, allied to a new, thinner front seatback design, makes generous rear seat accommodation one of the outstanding attributes of the new model.

The 60:40 split folding rear seats themselves have been made more comfortable, benefitting from a rise in cushion surface angle of 2 degrees and revised side bolsters for improved support.

The rear seats can be folded down almost flush with the loadspace floor without the need to remove any seat cushions or headrests.

The rear seats may be split 60:40 for maximum flexibility and each section can be reclined independently.

The length of the loadspace has increased to 1,025 mm, raising luggage capacity to 547 litres. Undertray storage has also increased by 51 litres from 49 to 100 litres (for versions equipped with a tyre repair kit).

The side-hung tailgate has been replaced by a top-hinged version, which may be equipped with power operation. At 645 mm (with repair kit or space-saver tyre), the new tailgate opening boasts a remarkable low loadspace lip height, as well as a wide aperture of 1,158 mm.

toyota news,2013 rav4

Toyota can rightfully claim to have created the compact SUV market with the launch of its first Recreational Active Vehicle with 4 Wheel-Drive (RAV4) in 1994.

Launched as a compact (3.695 m), 3-door model, the first "Urban 4WD" was quite different to a traditional 4x4. It featured a relatively small, 2.0 litre engine mounted transversally within a monocoque bodyshell, and all-round independent suspension. The compact SUV market was born.

Today, the compact SUV segment is one of the few still growing in Europe, with sales increasing by some 18% between 2008 and 2012. In 2011, Western European segment sales totalled 772,346 units, with a further 265,647 vehicles sold in Russia.

In 2010, there were 10 different models in the compact SUV segment, there are now 19 to choose from.

Available in over 150 countries, three generations of RAV4 have sold more than 4.5 million units since 1994, of which European markets have accounted for over 1.2 million sales.

The New, Fourth Generation RAV4

The fundamental design features accounting for the RAV4's success remain equally relevant to this fourth generation model.

Existing RAV4 customers from Europe, China and North America were interviewed to determine that which they most appreciated about Toyota's compact SUV. They cited good manoeuvrability, ease of access allied to an elevated view of the road, ingenious packaging, versatility, and reassuring capability, even in tough conditions.

As with previous model generations over the last 18 years, the new RAV4 has been developed to fully respond to the evolving customer requirements of the core compact SUV market —mature, active lifestyle families with a growing demand for space and versatility.

Equipped with new powertrains, the new RAV4 combines the widest engine line-up yet offered with an average reduction in CO2 emissions of 11% across the entire model range.

In conjunction with a new, more focused driving position, retuned front and rear suspension systems, revised Electric Power Steering and a newly developed Sport mode for its advanced, all-wheel drive, Integrated Dynamic Drive System give the new RAV4 greater stability and agility on both wet and dry roads for a more engaging driving experience.

toyota news,2013 rav4

INTRODUCTION: Pioneering a new segment

Toyota is proud to claim to have created the compact SUV market with the launch of its first Recreational Active Vehicle with 4 Wheel-Drive (RAV4) in 1994.

Launched as a compact (3.69 m), 3-door model, the first "Urban 4WD" was quite different to a traditional 4x4. It featured a relatively small, 2.0 litre engine mounted transversally within a monocoque bodyshell, and all-round independent suspension. The compact SUV market was born. Today, there are some 20 different models in the segment.

Available in over 150 countries, three generations of RAV4 have sold more than 4.5 million units since 1994, of which European markets have accounted for over 1.2 million sales.

The fundamental design features accounting for this success remain equally relevant for this fourth generation model. As for the last 18 years with previous model generations, the new RAV4 has been developed to fully respond to the evolving customer requirements of the core C-SUV market: active lifestyle families with a growing demand for space and versatility.

The new RAV4 reflects this stronger emphasis on family use building on its segment creating core values. The new RAV4 offers customers distinctive, sophisticated styling, refined, premium-quality interior design, a new Integrated Dynamic Drive System and an engaging drive with fuel efficient powertrains.

DESIGN

Sophisticated Exterior Design

Longer (+205* mm), wider (+30 mm) but lower (-25 mm) than its predecessor, the fourth generation of Toyota's compact, versatile SUV showcases an all new silhouette that emphasizes its versatility, roominess and improved dynamic capabilities.

The all-new exterior combines the sophisticated, stylish signature elements of the new Toyota frontal design language with clean, frill-free aesthetics and the muscular image of durability expected from a vehicle with its class-leading four-wheel drive credentials.

The black resin finish flows from the bottom corners of the lower bumper opening in the form of a tough, durable skirt around the base of the entire vehicle, including the wheel arches, providing off-road protection to the bodyshell and further emphasising the new SUV's muscular posture.

In profile, the new RAV4 inherits the combination of space-efficient packaging, rising belt-line and distinctive silhouette that has hallmarked successive generations of Toyota's compact SUV.

Above a more pronounced belt-line, blacked out B and C pillars emphasise the lengthened glasshouse and an increase in the vehicle's interior roominess. Below, the contrast of convex body surfacing and sharply concave treatment to the pronounced wheel arches and door cills brings added dynamism and strength to the new RAV4 silhouette.

Topped with an integral roof spoiler, the new tailgate itself is now top-hinged, and the spare wheel has been removed to complete the new RAV4's cleaner, more aerodynamically efficient design.

The new RAV4 will be available in a choice of nine body colours, including 3 new to the model range: Greyish Blue M.M., Moss Green and Black M.M.

Innovative, Higher Quality Interior Design

Combining a spacious, comfortable cabin with a cockpit-like driver's environment, the all-new interior design build's on the RAV4's inherent practicality with greater roominess, higher quality finishes and a more focused, engaging SUV driving experience.

Horizontal-lined design is used on the instrument panel in order to emphasize strength and wide-front design.

The dynamic, bold architecture of the new dashboard features powerful, upper and lower horizontal beams interrupted by a curved, metal-finish spar. Rooted in the transmission tunnel, the spar frames the driver's new instrument binnacle, steering wheel and footwell to reinforce the new RAV4 interior's more driver-focused credentials.

The clean, sophisticated elegance of the new design is further strengthened by the use of high quality materials, soft padding in many areas of occupant contact, crisp trim finishes and new colours throughout. Extended use of leather on the instrument panel contributes to emphasise the high quality feeling of the cabin.

All instrument and switchgear back-lighting is now a Clear Blue colour a crisp, cool after-dark illumination which brings sophistication and a powerful visual consistency to the new interior.

Focused, Ergonomic Driving Position

With cockpit-like driver's environment, the driving position of the new RAV4 has been designed for excellent ergonomics, greater comfort, better forward visibility and a more engaging driving experience.

The driver's seat hip point has been lowered by 5 mm, the seat height adjustment range increased by 15 mm and the steering wheel angle lowered by 2.3 degrees.

At the same time, the driver's forward visibility has been improved. The A pillars have been repositioned to a more outward location, increasing the driver's forward field of vision by 3 degrees, and the cross-sectional width of the pillars themselves has been reduced by 8%.

Greater Space and Versatility

Though retaining the compact exterior dimensions essential to manoeuvrability, the new RAV4's overall length of 4.57 m and its wheel base length of 2660 mm equip it with significant additional interior space, bringing passenger roominess and loadspace up to a par with larger, D segment vehicles.

With a front to rear seat couple distance, now a best-in-class 970 mm, and a new thinner front seatback design, space at rear seats has been increased.

The 60:40 split folding rear seats have been made more comfortable, benefitting from an increase in cushion surface angle of 2 degrees and higher side bolsters for improved support.

Thanks to Toyota's unique, easy flat seating system, the RAV4 retains all the practical, flexible versatility its customers have come to expect from the compact SUV.

The rear seats may be split 60:40 for maximum flexibility and each section can be reclined independently.

The length of the loadspace has been increased, raising luggage capacity to 547 litres. Undertray storage has also increased by 49 litres from 51 to 100 litres.

The side-hung tailgate has been replaced by a top-hinged version, which may be equipped with power operation. At 645 mm, the new tailgate opening boasts the lowest loadspace lip height in its class, as well as a wide aperture of 1335 mm.

POWERTRAINS

Featuring two new powerplants -a 2.0 litre diesel for the Western European market and a 2.5 litre petrol unit for the Russian market- and with a 2.2 litre diesel engine now available in Russia for the first time, the new RAV4's comprehensive engine range offers an unmatched balance between outstanding, front- and four-wheel drive performance and class-leading CO2 emissions in all petrol and diesel variants.

Western European Engine Line-up

The Western European powertrain line up now comprises a 151 DIN hp 2.0 litre petrol engine, a new 124 DIN hp 2.0 litre diesel, and a powerful 150 DIN hp 2.2 litre D-4D diesel engine.

Every engine in this new line-up benefits from reductions in CO2 emissions, averaging some 12% across the powerplant range.

Of particular note, the 2.0 litre diesel, front-wheel drive derivative new to the RAV4 range is equipped with Toyota's Stop & Start technology, reducing CO2 emission to only 127 g/km.

In combination, these developments award the new RAV4 greater stability and agility on both wet and dry roads, offering customers a confidence-inspiring, more intuitive and engaging driving experience.

The new RAV4 is also available with both Down-hill Assist and Hill Start Assist Control. Fitted as standard to all vehicles equipped with automatic transmission and particularly useful during icy or snowy descents, Down-hill Assist Control automatically regulates gear selection, engine speed and the individual wheel braking capabilities of the ABS system to help the driver maintain skid-free control of the vehicle on slippery descents.

Integrated Dynamic Drive System

The Integrated Dynamic Drive System is a sophisticated, high-speed interactive management system which coordinates control of the RAV4's new Dynamic Torque Control 4WD, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems to enhance the compact SUV's performance, handling and safety.

The new Dynamic Torque Control 4WD system continuously monitors and controls the torque transfer between the front and rear wheels via an electromagnetically controlled coupling positioned in front of the rear differential.

Front to rear torque distribution can vary from 100:0 to 50:50, with front-wheel drive (100:0) automatically engaged under normal driving conditions to improve fuel consumption.

The Dynamic Torque Control 4WD system uses information sent from various sensors (speed, steering angle, throttle angle and yaw rate) to automatically govern the transmission of torque to the rear wheels, as required.

In Normal mode -when neither Sport mode nor Lock mode are activated- torque transfer to the rear wheels will take place not only when the slip is detected (as in thethird generation RAV4), but also when the system detects understeer during cornering on-road. As a result, the overall agility and driving performance of the new RAV4 is enhanced during both on- and off-road driving.

When all new Sport mode (standard on AWD models) is selected, torque transfer to the rear wheels will start from the moment the steering wheel is turned. The new Dynamic Torque Control AWD System, with the feedback from driver steering input, will adjust automatically a 90:10 front/rear torque distribution to reduce the load on the front tyres.

If later, an actual understeer develops, torque transfer to the rear wheels is automatically increased by up to 50%, further reducing front tyre loading to provide improved lateral grip.

As well as activating the 'Dynamic' behaviour of the system's front to rear torque transfer, the new Sport mode also modifies the RAV4's power steering, throttle and transmissions decreasing power steering assistance, sharpening throttle response and offering higher revs', automatic and CVT gearbox management, for a more dynamic, sporting driving experience.

For off-road driving, the system incorporates a 4WD Lock button. This allows drivers to lock torque distribution in a fixed, 50/50 ratio at speeds up to 40 km/h.

SAFETY AND TECHNOLOGY

The new RAV4 builds on the very highest standards of occupant safety and pedestrian impact protection evolved over three generations of the compact Toyota SUV, with even higher levels of active and passive safety.

With a new, high rigidity, multi-path impact load body designed to provide optimum occupant and pedestrian impact protection, the new RAV4 has been engineered to achieve a 5-Star rating in the gruelling, 2013 Euro NCAP crash test programme.

The new Toyota SUV is equipped with a new anti-whiplash seat design, and 7 airbags are fitted as standard, including a driver's knee airbag and twin-chamber front seat side airbags.

The Blind Spot Warning system notifies drivers of a vehicle travelling in an adjacent lane in their blind spot by illuminating the relevant indicator mounted in the outer door mirror surface. The system uses radar sensors mounted on both sides of the rear of the new RAV4, which monitor the blind area of the driver. If the turn signal lamp switch is in operation, the indicator will flash at fixed intervals to alert the driver.
