Available throughout Europe from February next year, the 2016 Verso model range will be available with a choice of 1.6 D-4D diesel, or 1.6L and 1.8L Valvematic petrol engines.

Toyota Safety Sense

Processing information provided by a compact, windscreen head-mounted unit housing both a laser and a camera, Toyota Safety Sense helps prevent or mitigate collisions across a wide range of traffic situations.

Between speeds of approximately 10 km/h and 80 km/h, the Pre-Collision System detects vehicles in front and reduces the risk of hitting them from behind. When there is a possibility of a collision it prompts the driver to brake with an audible and visual alert.

PCS also primes the brake system to deliver extra stopping force when the driver presses the brake pedal. If the driver fails to react in time, the system automatically applies the brakes, reducing speed by approximately 30 km/h[2] or even bringing the car to a complete stop, in order to prevent the collision or mitigate the force of impact.

Lane Departure Alert monitors lane markings and helps prevent accidents and head-on collisions caused by leaving lanes. If the vehicle starts to deviate from the lane without the indicators having been engaged, LDA warns the driver with an audible and visual alert.

Automatic High Beam helps ensure excellent forward visibility during night-time driving. It detects both the headlights of oncoming vehicles and the tail lights of preceding vehicles, automatically switching between high and low beams to avoid dazzling other drivers. By using high beams more frequently the system enables earlier detection of pedestrians and obstacles.

Thanks to the Toyota Safety Sense system reducing the risk of being involved in traffic accidents, drivers of the 2016 Verso may benefit from lower insurance costs[3] or a more advantageous insurance reclassification3.

</pp:summary>

Starting from a strong base

Launched in 2013, the current Verso was developed exclusively for the European market.

The company’s first full-scale project to incorporate European-based Product Planning, Design, R&D and Purchasing from inception, Verso was designed, engineered and built entirely under the leadership of Toyota Motor Europe.

Styled at ED2, Toyota’s European design centre in France, and with over 470 changed parts (60% visible, 40% related to driving dynamics and NVH), the current Verso represented a comprehensive model mid-lifecycle upgrade for Toyota in Europe.

Tailored to meet the increasingly varied demands of today’s MPV customer, the stylish, comfortable and flexible Verso range represents outstanding value for money. Within compact exterior dimensions, it boasts exceptional roominess with one of the best seat coupledistances in its class and the true multi-purpose vehicle versatility of the company’s Easy Flat seating system.

Since the initial launch of the Verso in 2002, cumulative sales have risen to over 700,000 units. Built exclusively at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey, the current Verso has sold some 40,000 units since its launch in 2013, increasing the company’s C-MPV segment share to 4.6%.

New 1.6 D-4D, new features

The enhanced 2014 Verso features an expanded engine line-up which introduces a new 1.6 litre D-4D turbodiesel. The exterior benefits from a new bronze colour and new, 16” and 17” alloy wheel designs. The interior has been enhanced with new trim and detailing. And the company’s range of affordable multimedia systems, Toyota Touch® 2, has been comprehensively upgraded.

Driving performance

• New 112 DIN hp 1.6 litre D-4D turbodiesel offers fast throttle response

and linear torque build-up over a wide rev range

• First adoption of Stop & Start system in Verso

• CO2 emissions of 119 g/km

• Expanded choice of powertrains: 4 diesel and 2 petrol engines

New 1.6 D-4D

The 2014 Verso features an expanded line-up which introduces a new 1.6 D-4D (Direct injection – 4-stroke Diesel) engine to the range for the first time.

Diesel engine sales continue to dominate the European market in the C-MPV segment, and 1.6 litre variants currently account for over 50% of sales.

The engine for the 1.6 D-4D is sourced from the BMW Group, and is mated to a Toyota 6-speed gearbox. 20 kg lighter than the 2.0 D-4D powerplant, this Euro 5 compliant engine develops 112 DIN hp/82 kW at 4,000 rpm and 270 Nm of torque from 1,750 to 2,250 rpm. It accelerates the Verso from 0-100 km/h in 12.7 seconds, and on to a top speed of 185 km/h.

The engine delivers an 8% improvement in fuel efficiency over the 2.0 D-4D unit, equating to fuel consumption of 4.5 l/100 km in the combined homologation cycle. Simultaneously, CO2 emissions have reduced from 129 to only 119 g/km.

These figures are supported by the first ever adoption of a Stop & Start system in the Verso range, in accordance with the principles of the Toyota Optimal Drive philosophy.

Several engineering challenges were key to the successful integration of the new 1.6 D-4D engine. All electrical interfaces were redesigned, and a newly-developed dual-mass flywheel was fitted to optimise noise and vibration.

New engine mounts offer particularly low vibration characteristics, especially under Stop & Start operation, minimising Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) and offering quiet running at cruising speeds.

The engine itself has been tuned to deliver a fast throttle response throughout the rev range. It generates good initial response at low rpm, then, as turbo boost develops, provides a linear torque build-up. The availability of torque has also been stretched, so the engine will happily rev beyond 3,000 rpm without running out of breath.

With ride quality already assured on the existing Verso, spring settings have been modified for the new 1.6 D-4D version to replicate the same levels of body control and ride comfort.

The addition of the 1.6 D-4D unit to the model range increases the engine line-up to a choice of 6 powerplants –150 DIN hp and 177 DIN hp versions of the 2.2 D-CAT diesel, a 124 DIN hp 2.0 D-4D diesel, the new 112 DIN hp 1.6 D-4D, and a choice of 1.6, 132 DIN hp and 1.8, 147 DIN hp Valvematic petrol engines.

Interview

Gerald Killmann, Vice President R&D2 at Toyota’s R&D centre in Belgium, discusses the new diesel, key development goals, the main project challenges, and the R&D required to develop a true Toyota D-4D engine.

Why did you decide to source an engine, rather than to develop a 1.6 diesel from scratch?

Considering that diesel sales for passenger cars are mainly concentrated in Europe, and that a new diesel engine requires significant development work, we came to the conclusion that in this instance, the best solution was to cooperate with another OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) rather than develop a unit ourselves.

The next step was to fix the selection criteria. We went looking for candidate engines that delivered our required level of performance – torque, power, fuel consumption. And of course, we also had to take into account whether the geometry was compatible with our car.

But the engine hardware wasn’t our only driver – we also wanted to find a partner that is, like us, a technically oriented company, and which thinks in similar ways to us.

So, all in all, the BMW Group turned out to be the ideal partner for us.

What was Toyota’s development on this engine?

The engine is maybe the most interlinked component in a car – it interacts with a huge number of systems. In this case, we developed a host of new elements: a new dual-mass flywheel, an adapted gearbox housing, new engine mounts, new electronic interfaces…

When you install an engine in a car, it is not only a mechanical, but also an electrical marriage.

This matching of electronics was a major task, because the engine controlunit contains elements from both partners in this project, and they all needed to be integrated to the car’s electronic system through our interfaces.

External components of the unit were adapted to meet our geometrical requirements. And, to cope with the thermal stress that comes from powering a relatively large and potentially heavily loaded car, air flow through the engine compartment was optimised.

Has the use of a Toyota gearbox primarily to do with the packaging?

No. The key point was that we started with a very good car. We wanted to preserve as many elements as possible, and only change what was really necessary.

What were your main targets when adding this engine to the line-up?

First of all, being a family car, an MPV has to remain comfortable to drive. On the other hand, based on the vehicles that were already on the road with this engine, we recognised its dynamic performance. So we wanted to bring a combination of these key aspects to our car.

With a low displacement engine in a relatively big car, it’s essential that the engine delivers. So that was one of the key engineering targets. We had to make sure that torque was available from low revs, but also that it was spread over a wide rev band.

This ‘stretchiness’ was one of our key goals – it allows the driver to stay in the same gear for longer, at higher rpm during acceleration, without getting the feeling that the engine runs out of steam.

A second item was fast engine response, delivering sufficient torque even before the turbo cuts in. And not just a fast response but also a natural torque build-up, so it doesn’t feel like small engine… small engine… small engine… and then suddenly the turbo comes in with a whoosh. Rather, we wanted a more natural, linear torque build-up.

As a result, the driver gets access to very decent performance, without upsetting the comfort of his passengers with sudden bursts of acceleration as he goes through the gears – important in a family car!

The target on NVH was to be as good as the 2.0 D-4D and, in some areas, perform even better.

And of course, one of the key objectives was efficiency. We managed to cut back CO2 emissions by 8%, from 129 to 119 g/km, compared to the 2.0 D-4D engine. And due to the smaller engine size and the adoption of a Stop & Start-system, the fuel consumption advantage is noticeable, especially in urban conditions.

How was Toyota quality guaranteed?

The car is engineered like any other Toyota. The engine was subjected to all our durability tests, even though it comes from another OEM. From the R&D viewpoint it’s just a different engine manufacturer supplying the unit, but our standards don’t change.

We have checked that it complies with all our durability requirements, and we have done all necessary component re-development and testing.

What elements are you most proud of?

Our goal was to ensure that the 1.6 D-4D version would deliver improved CO2 without sacrificing comfort, driving pleasure and real-world usability. Three elements contribute to achieving that:

Firstly, we managed to control the transmission of engine vibrations into the body very well. Especially under Stop & Start operation, I’m extremely happy with the level we achieved.

Secondly, the response of the engine, the linear torque build-up and the high torque availability over a wide rpm range. Often with a diesel, once beyond 2,700-2,800 rpm, the torque decrease hits you like a barrier. The 1.6 D-4D, on the other hand, allows you to happily continue well beyond 3,000 rpm, almost like a petrol engine. As a driver, it is nice to have that option, especially when you have to pull into heavy traffic and need power to catch up with the traffic flow.

Thirdly, we’ve also worked on gear ratio selection to combine dynamic performance with good fuel consumption and low noise levels at motorway-speeds. That’s why we made 6th a highway cruising gear, while lower gears like 2nd and 3rd are designed to give good acceleration, using the stretchiness of this high revving engine.

Design

• Choice of 10 exterior colours, including new Avantgarde Bronze

• New bold 17” alloy wheel with a darker, smoked silver design

• Introduction of 2 new seat upholstery choices: Dark Grey fabric with silver stitching and Light Grey fabric with leather side bolsters

• New Tyre Pressure Warning System and gear shift lever design

The Verso combines the Toyota MPV’s trademark, dual-zone styling with the company’s Under Priority design language and Keen Look styling elements. A 2013 mid-life redesign has brought an increase in dynamism and desirability to the model range.

2014 Verso

Building on the existing range of 10 exterior colours and 16” and 17” alloy wheels, the 2014 Verso introduces a new Avantgarde Bronze paint, a new 7-spoke 16” alloy wheel and a bold, 5-spoke 17” alloy design with a darker, smoked silver finish.

On board, the 2014 Verso interior features a more tactile gear shift lever design, the addition of a Tyre Pressure Warning System (TPWS) to the standard equipment list, and the availability of new seat upholstery -a Dark Grey fabric with 3D-effect silver stitching and a Light Grey fabric with leather side bolsters.

New colours and equipment

Interview

Mehmet Kilic, Senior Project Manager at Toyota’s R&D centre in Belgium, discusses the Verso’s uniquely European DNA, the significance of the exterior and interior design changes to the 2014 Verso, and the role of ED2 (Toyota’s European design studio) in the creation of the new designs.

What makes the Verso unique?

First of all, its interior modularity and its ease of use, which is very important in the MPV segment. If we look at the profile of our main customers, they’re very family oriented and have a lot of sporting and social activities going on… So they need flexible seating and loadspace.

Then, there is the styling. We have tried to introduce dynamism to a segment which traditionally favours rather static and boxy design.

So in summary, Verso is a stylish and modular family car. It is also one of the most compact 7-seat MPVs. When we ask our customers, this is one of their key buying reasons. They like the compactness, especially for city use, in combination with the maximized interior space.

How is Verso a ‘full European’ car?

Well, if we go element by element… More than 95% of Verso customers areEuropeans… There actually is no Japanese Verso, and the equivalent in China looks nothing like this - it was launched two years before the current European car.

From a manufacturing perspective, about 95% of all parts are produced locally. Secondly, for the last three years, all R&D activities have taken place within Europe. So we are now kind of independent from the Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan; the leadership is here in Europe. That also goes for the styling, and the product planning. All have been completely localised for the last three years. In all, some 350 to 400 local staff were involved in this project.

So Verso is made for Europeans, in Europe, by Europeans.

Why are you now launching this new 2014 Verso, just one year after the model’s comprehensive mid-lifecycle upgrade?

This is a ‘Model Year’ car. With the Model Year concept, we want to introduce newness and freshness to the product every 12 months to keep the profile of the car as high as possible in the market. This is the first time we have applied this concept to Verso.

And, again, this idea is tailored completely to the European market. Typically, a Model Year would introduce visual newness, and perhaps some new equipment. But this 2014 Verso goes a bit beyond that, because we’re introducing a new engine as well, which constitutes a wider choice, and gives us better access to the heart of the segment.

The Model Year concept also allows us to make product improvements. A simple example: this time, we are also changing the shift knob to a more tactile design. It is a part that the driver touches 100,000 times a year. If we can introduce a softer leather, better ergonomics… Let’s not wait for the next generation to come… Let’s do that now.

How did you decide which elements to update for the 2014 Verso?

After the 2013 facelift, we continued to refine a second colour interior that we had been working on. With this 2014 model we are introducing that lighter interior, which should not only attract families but also fleet and business customers. These drivers spend many hours a day in their cars, so a lighter, brighter interior really makes a difference. It may also be seen as more prestigious.

We also have two new alloy wheels, a 16” and a 17”. The 17” is quite robust looking … It’s bold and the colour is not a standard silver, but a darker, smoked colour.

When you put these different elements together with the new bronze exterior body colour, the Skyview panoramic roof and privacy glass –along with the new 1.6 diesel engine and upgraded multimedia systems, you end up with a new and very attractive package.

What was the involvement of ED2 in the creation of the new designs?

They are one of our most significant partners in product development, especially for a job like this. A car has 2,000 parts and we are only changing 1% to 5% of them, so you aim for maximum impact from those changes.

The exterior colour is the number one element from a communication perspective, so that’s where ED2 comes in: Which colours to select; why; what are the market trends; how will they stand the test of time?

We wanted to offer the features and functions of premium systems at an accessible price, so that as many customers as possible can benefit. Furthermore, we wanted a much closer integration of Toyota Touch® 2 with the car, expanding its use to display many vehicle functions.

We’ve kept the system cost down because we don’t integrate a communication module imbedded in the car. Instead we use the customer’s mobile phone as a sort of modem to connect to the internet. This also avoids the need for a second data-subscription.

Previously we were a little concerned at using the phone as a connection device, but actually it works pretty well. If you have to connect your Bluetooth for your hands-free and music anyway, it simply becomes part of the same process.

And we’ve really simplified the process of going on-line with this next generation system too. We have wireless connection, so you simply set up your phone as a Wi-Fi hot spot and then log into that via the car.

What is new on Toyota Touch® 2?

First, we wanted to increase the quality of the screen to give a much sharper and brighter image.

All the menu screens have been redesigned as well, with the help of ED2. We felt the need to involve them because on-board multimedia systems are becoming increasingly important to customers, and we value their design direction on such a significant piece of equipment.

The screens now have a much deeper, 3D effect and feature a ‘boat floor’ motif running through the designs, which helps to give visual consistency between the different screens.

We also have a new range of connected services, using partners who are leaders in their respective areas, such as TomTom for traffic services and Google for search related functions. And, provided they have a compatible phone, users can use MirrorLink to replicate their smartphone display on the vehicle screen, and even operate their phone from there.

What is Toyota Online?

With the Toyota Online function of Toyota Touch® 2 with Go and Toyota Touch® 2 with Go Plus, you have access to a number of online services which provide the driver with peace of mind.

Via TomTom HD Traffic you receive real-time traffic updates about any incidents or congestion along your route, and, if necessary, the system provides detour options.

Online Local Search is an additional POI database enhanced by an online search function. So it allows you to find any type of place of interest more easily via Google and TomTom places.

You can also activate apps to keep you informed on available parking spaces, fuel costs and the weather forecast. We also offer a Twitter app and ‘Glass of Water’, which is sort of a game to encourage more economical driving in a fun but non-distracting way.

Last, but certainly not least, Toyota is the first mainstream brand to offer Google Street View and Panoramio services.

Google Street View is very helpful for familiarising yourself with your destination before you arrive. You can see what the surrounding area is like, and even where you might park the car.

And Panoramio goes one step further. It provides user-uploaded images of city landmarks and places of interest. So if you’re on holiday with the car, you can check on the map for any POI, view a full image of it and then let the navigation system guide you there.

Do the Toyota Touch® 2 systems use Google Maps?

No, because that runs online and to use it you have to be connected all the time… For cross border travel, your 3G bill would become astronomical!

That’s why we use a hard drive system, which also has the benefit of being able to be very much more tailored for the car, and won’t desert you if you drive through a tunnel... The only thing you need connectivity for is traffic information, and that doesn’t even have to be 3G.

How do you ensure that your customers can cope with the growing complexity of HMI systems?

With the increase of functions, having a clear and easy-to-use HMI (Human-Machine Interface) is paramount. So in the development of the Toyota Touch® 2 range, a lot of our time and effort has gone into that.

For example, we have increased the number of languages for the voice recognition system, which we have otherwise kept as simple as possible. Many systems incorporate things you can do much more quickly with the buttons. Our philosophy is different: we’ve focused on three key commands. No matter what menu you’re in, you can set a navigation destination, play any music track from your iPod or phone, and dial any number or ask for any contact by name, in just one sentence. This also improves road safety.

The Toyota Touch® 2 systems have been designed to be as user-friendly as possible in many other ways too. For instance, if you type in a destination address, the system will react to the very first letter with a background suggestion, starting with the largest cities first.

We’ve also improved our customer portal on http://my.toyota.eu. Users can now manage their subscriptions and map updates on the website more easily. It even allows you to be in contact with your car online.

For example, if you’re researching a destination on Google Maps, you can simply right click and send it directly to your car’s navigation system. That’s extremely convenient.

Can older systems be upgraded to the latest software?

To a certain extent, yes. You can update maps every 6 months, and if there are software developments we also provide updates. You just download the latest version to a USB-stick and then plug that into the car to update the Toyota Touch® 2 software.

Over the lifetime of the first generation system we introduced new features, apps and software for customers to install. We offer support for each system for at least 10 years, so if you buy a second hand car you can still make upgrades that the previous owner did not.

And, of course, we’ll be doing the same thing for this new system.

2014 verso,2013 verso

</pp:summary>

New 1.6 D-4D

The 2014 Verso features an expanded line-up which introduces a new 1.6 D-4D (Direct injection — 4-stroke Diesel) engine to the range for the first time.

The addition of the 1.6 D-4D unit to the model range increases the engine line-up to a choice of 6 powerplants —150 DIN hp and 177 DIN hp versions of the 2.2 D-CAT diesel, a 124 DIN hp 2.0 D-4D diesel, the new 112 DIN hp 1.6 D-4D, and a choice of 1.6, 132 DIN hp and 1.8, 147 DIN hp Valvematic petrol engines.

Interview

Gerald Killmann, Vice President RandD2 at Toyota's RandD centre in Belgium, discusses the new diesel, key development goals, the main project challenges, and the RandD required to develop a true Toyota D-4D engine.

We went looking for candidate engines that delivered our required level of performance — torque, power, fuel consumption. And of course, we also had to take into account whether the geometry was compatible with our car.

But the engine hardware wasn't our only driver — we also wanted to find a partner that is, like us, a technically oriented company, and which thinks in similar ways to us.

So, all in all, the BMW Group turned out to be the ideal partner for us.

What was Toyota's development on this engine?

The engine is maybe the most interlinked component in a car — it interacts with a huge number of systems. In this case, we developed a host of new elements: a new dual-mass flywheel, an adapted gearbox housing, new engine mounts, new electronic interfaces…

When you install an engine in a car, it is not only a mechanical, but also an electrical marriage.

This matching of electronics was a major task, because the engine control unit contains elements from both partners in this project, and they all needed to be integrated to the car's electronic system through our interfaces.

With a low displacement engine in a relatively big car, it's essential that the engine delivers. So that was one of the key engineering targets. We had to make sure that torque was available from low revs, but also that it was spread over a wide rev band.

This 'stretchiness' was one of our key goals — it allows the driver to stay in the same gear for longer, at higher rpm during acceleration, without getting the feeling that the engine runs out of steam.

A second item was fast engine response, delivering sufficient torque even before the turbo cuts in. And not just a fast response but also a natural torque build-up, so it doesn't feel like small engine… small engine… small engine… and then suddenly the turbo comes in with a whoosh. Rather, we wanted a more natural, linear torque build-up.

As a result, the driver gets access to very decent performance, without upsetting the comfort of his passengers with sudden bursts of acceleration as he goes through the gears — important in a family car!

From the RandD viewpoint it's just a different engine manufacturer supplying the unit, but our standards don't change.

Especially under Stop & Start operation, I'm extremely happy with the level we achieved.

Thirdly, we've also worked on gear ratio selection to combine dynamic performance with good fuel consumption and low noise levels at motorway-speeds. That's why we made 6th a highway cruising gear, while lower gears like 2nd and 3rd are designed to give good acceleration, using the stretchiness of this high revving engine.

toyota news,2013 verso

Interview

Mehmet Kilic, Senior Project Manager at Toyota's RandD centre in Belgium, discusses the Verso's uniquely European DNA, the significance of the exterior and interior design changes to the 2014 Verso, and the role of ED2 (Toyota's European design studio) in the creation of the new designs.

What makes the Verso unique?

First of all, its interior modularity and its ease of use, which is very important in the MPV segment. If we look at the profile of our main customers, they're very family oriented and have a lot of sporting and social activities going on… So they need flexible seating and loadspace.

How is Verso a 'full European' car?

Well, if we go element by element… More than 95% of Verso customers are Europeans… There actually is no Japanese Verso, and the equivalent in China looks nothing like this - it was launched two years before the current European car.

From a manufacturing perspective, about 95% of all parts are produced locally. Secondly, for the last three years, all RandD activities have taken place within Europe. So we are now kind of independent from the Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan the leadership is here in Europe. That also goes for the styling, and the product planning. All have been completely localised for the last three years. In all, some 350 to 400 local staff were involved in this project.

So Verso is made for Europeans, in Europe, by Europeans.

Why are you now launching this new 2014 Verso, just one year after the model's comprehensive mid-lifecycle upgrade?

This is a 'Model Year' car.

But this 2014 Verso goes a bit beyond that, because we're introducing a new engine as well, which constitutes a wider choice, and gives us better access to the heart of the segment.

The Model Year concept also allows us to make product improvements. A simple example: this time, we are also changing the shift knob to a more tactile design. It is a part that the driver touches 100,000 times a year. If we can introduce a softer leather, better ergonomics… Let's not wait for the next generation to come… Let's do that now.

We also have two new alloy wheels, a 16" and a 17". The 17" is quite robust looking … It's bold and the colour is not a standard silver, but a darker, smoked colour.

When you put these different elements together with the new bronze exterior body colour, the Skyview panoramic roof and privacy glass —along with the new 1.6 diesel engine and upgraded multimedia systems, you end up with a new and very attractive package.

What was the involvement of ED2 in the creation of the new designs?

They are one of our most significant partners in product development, especially for a job like this. A car has 2,000 parts and we are only changing 1% to 5% of them, so you aim for maximum impact from those changes.

The exterior colour is the number one element from a communication perspective, so that's where ED2 comes in: Which colours to select why what are the market trends how will they stand the test of time?

This isn't just an automotive issue… It applies to any product. Take the Pearl White body colour that we used to launch the 2013 Verso you can see similar colours on smartphones, PCs, TVs… There's a clear trend. Grasping that trend and making sure our products fit in, that's the expertise ED2 brings to a project such as this one.

toyota news,2013 verso

Fitted as standard in the 2014 Verso from Active grade, Toyota Touch® 2 is an upgraded version of Toyota's affordable touch-screen multimedia system.

Via a 6.1" full colour touch screen interface, it incorporates AM/FM radio with an optional DAB/DAB+/DMB-A receiver, a CD/MP3 player, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity with a music streaming facility, and a USB port for the connection of portable music players, with the facility to display iPod album cover art.

A rear view camera is fitted as standard, helping drivers to manoeuvre in confined spaces.

The enhanced Toyota Touch® 2 system features redesigned screens with a deeper, 3D effect. Image resolution has been increased by a factor of four from 400 x 240 to 800 x 480, giving a much brighter, sharper image.

The screen menu has been expanded to incorporate more vehicle information content, such as air-conditioning settings, and the screen now supports 'drag and flick' control for easy, intuitive operation.

Toyota Touch® 2 is 'MirrorLink'-ready, which enables users to connect compatible smartphones and then operate them entirely from the system's touch screen.

The optional DAB radio has now been fully integrated, and incorporates an 'FM Link' facility which automatically switches to the corresponding FM station should the DAB signal fail.

Toyota Touch® 2 with Go

The Toyota Touch® 2 with Go offers customers an enhanced, full map navigation system which represents the best value for money on the market. The system was developed specifically with European customers in mind.

Available in 20 languages, it includes all the most popular navigation functions, such as customisable speed limits, speed camera warnings, automatic zoom, motorway signposting and junction view at motorway intersections. The map zoom function is now more easily controlled by a simple rotary button.

Advanced traffic coverage, now located on the map itself, takes the form of a 'traffic bar' showing the driver any congestion ahead, and what delay to expect.

Via the Toyota Online function, the system offers on-board connectivity to an expanded range of services including Toyota Real Time Traffic powered by TomTom, Google Street View, Panoramio and Google Local Search —the largest and most up-to-date search database in the world.

Toyota's improved customer portal also allows users to be in contact with their vehicles online. For instance, via Google Maps, destinations may be input remotely from home or office, and Points of Interest (POI) may be downloaded for entry as destinations.

Further system access to Toyota Online content includes a Touch 2 with Go Apps function which offers several applications, including fuel prices, weather and parking space information.

The installation of Touch 2 with Go also upgrades the multimedia base unit to incorporate a contact person image display.

Toyota Touch® 2 with Go has been designed specifically to be both affordable and flexible. The system can be easily upgraded with the newest functions, updated maps and the latest Apps, as they become available.

Toyota Touch® 2 with Go Plus

When upgraded to Touch 2 with Go Plus, the touch-screen multimedia system comes equipped with 3D city models, landmark graphics and a 'text-to-speech' message readout facility.

The system will display emails and calendars depending on Bluetooth mobile phone compatibility. It also features a 'Play More like This' function. This smart music recognition system can automatically provide playlist recommendations to suit your mood a safe and easy way to manage music on the move.

Touch 2 with Go Plus supports Wi-Fi connectivity. Users set up their smartphones as a Wi-Fi hotspot for connection to the system's online functions.

With the number of languages now increased to 15, the Advanced Voice Recognition function has been designed for the simplest possible operation whilst driving. Focusing on three key tasks, it allows the driver to input a full destination, make a phone call, or to pick a specific song from a connected iPod with a single voice command.

Toyota Touch® 2 With Go Plus includes three years free map and software updating.

Interview

Sigi Killemaes, Manager Multimedia Systems and Telematics at Toyota's RandD centre in Belgium, discusses the philosophy behind the Toyota Touch® 2 concept, and the integration of premium features at an affordable price.

What is the philosophy behind the Toyota Touch® 2 multimedia systems?

The concept is built around what we call affordable innovation. We wanted to offer the features and functions of premium systems at an accessible price, so that as many customers as possible can benefit. Furthermore, we wanted a much closer integration of Toyota Touch® 2 with the car, expanding its use to display many vehicle functions.

We've kept the system cost down because we don't integrate a communication module imbedded in the car. Instead we use the customer's mobile phone as a sort of modem to connect to the internet. This also avoids the need for a second data-subscription.

Previously we were a little concerned at using the phone as a connection device, but actually it works pretty well. If you have to connect your Bluetooth for your hands-free and music anyway, it simply becomes part of the same process.

And we've really simplified the process of going on-line with this next generation system too.

The screens now have a much deeper, 3D effect and feature a 'boat floor' motif running through the designs, which helps to give visual consistency between the different screens.

We also offer a Twitter app and 'Glass of Water', which is sort of a game to encourage more economical driving in a fun but non-distracting way.

So if you're on holiday with the car, you can check on the map for any POI, view a full image of it and then let the navigation system guide you there.

Do the Toyota Touch® 2 systems use Google Maps?

No, because that runs online and to use it you have to be connected all the time… For cross border travel, your 3G bill would become astronomical!

That's why we use a hard drive system, which also has the benefit of being able to be very much more tailored for the car, and won't desert you if you drive through a tunnel... The only thing you need connectivity for is traffic information, and that doesn't even have to be 3G.

Our philosophy is different: we've focused on three key commands. No matter what menu you're in, you can set a navigation destination, play any music track from your iPod or phone, and dial any number or ask for any contact by name, in just one sentence. This also improves road safety.

The Toyota Touch® 2 systems have been designed to be as user-friendly as possible in many other ways too. For instance, if you type in a destination address, the system will react to the very first letter with a background suggestion, starting with the largest cities first.

We've also improved our customer portal on http://my.toyota.eu. Users can now manage their subscriptions and map updates on the website more easily. It even allows you to be in contact with your car online.

For example, if you're researching a destination on Google Maps, you can simply right click and send it directly to your car's navigation system. That's extremely convenient.

And, of course, we'll be doing the same thing for this new system.

toyota news,2013 verso

</pp:summary>

Starting from a strong base

Launched in 2013, the current Verso was developed exclusively for the European market.

The company's first full-scale project to incorporate European-based Product Planning, Design, RandD and Purchasing from inception, Verso was designed, engineered and built entirely under the leadership of Toyota Motor Europe.

Styled at ED2, Toyota's European design centre in France, and with over 470 changed parts (60% visible, 40% related to driving dynamics and NVH), the current Verso represented a comprehensive model mid-lifecycle upgrade for Toyota in Europe.

Tailored to meet the increasingly varied demands of today's MPV customer, the stylish, comfortable and flexible Verso range represents outstanding value for money. Within compact exterior dimensions, it boasts exceptional roominess with one of the best seat couple

distances in its class and the true multi-purpose vehicle versatility of the company's Easy Flat seating system.

Since the initial launch of the Verso in 2002, cumulative sales have risen to over 700,000 units. Built exclusively at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey, the current Verso has sold some 40,000 units since its launch in 2013, increasing the company's C-MPV segment share to 4.6%.

New 1.6 D-4D, new features

The enhanced 2014 Verso features an expanded engine line-up which introduces a new 1.6 litre D-4D turbodiesel. The exterior benefits from a new bronze colour and new, 16" and 17" alloy wheel designs. The interior has been enhanced with new trim and detailing. And the company's range of affordable multimedia systems, Toyota Touch® 2, has been comprehensively upgraded.

Driving performance

&bull New 112 DIN hp 1.6 litre D-4D turbodiesel offers fast throttle response and linear torque build-up over a wide rev range

&bull First adoption of Stop & Start system in Verso

&bull CO2 emissions of 119 g/km

&bull Expanded choice of powertrains: 4 diesel and 2 petrol engines

New 1.6 D-4D

The 2014 Verso features an expanded line-up which introduces a new 1.6 D-4D (Direct injection — 4-stroke Diesel) engine to the range for the first time.

From the RandD viewpoint it's just a different engine manufacturer supplying the unit, but our standards don't change.

Especially under Stop & Start operation, I'm extremely happy with the level we achieved.

Design

&bull Choice of 10 exterior colours, including new Avantgarde Bronze

&bull New bold 17" alloy wheel with a darker, smoked silver design

&bull Introduction of 2 new seat upholstery choices: Dark Grey fabric with silver stitching and Light Grey fabric with leather side bolsters

&bull New Tyre Pressure Warning System and gear shift lever design

The Verso combines the Toyota MPV's trademark, dual-zone styling with the company's Under Priority design language and Keen Look styling elements. A 2013 mid-life redesign has brought an increase in dynamism and desirability to the model range.

2014 Verso

Building on the existing range of 10 exterior colours and 16" and 17" alloy wheels, the 2014 Verso introduces a new Avantgarde Bronze paint, a new 7-spoke 16" alloy wheel and a bold, 5-spoke 17" alloy design with a darker, smoked silver finish.

Toyota Touch® 2

The screens now have a much deeper, 3D effect and feature a 'boat floor' motif running through the designs, which helps to give visual consistency between the different screens.

We also offer a Twitter app and 'Glass of Water', which is sort of a game to encourage more economical driving in a fun but non-distracting way.

And, of course, we'll be doing the same thing for this new system.

toyota news,2013 verso

</pp:summary>

Within compact exterior dimensions, it boasts exceptional roominess with one of the best seat couple distances in its class and the true multi-purpose vehicle versatility of the company's Easy Flat seating system.

Since the initial launch of the Verso in 2002, cumulative sales have risen to over 700,000 units. Built exclusively at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey, the current Verso has sold some 37,000 units since its launch in 2013, increasing the company's C-MPV segment share to 4.8%.

New 1.6D-4D, new features

The enhanced 2014 Verso features an expanded engine line-up which introduces a new 1.6 litre D-4D turbodiesel. The exterior benefits from a new bronze colour and new, 16" and 17" alloy wheel designs. The interior has been enhanced with new trim and detailing. And the company's range of affordable multimedia systems, Toyota Touch® 2, has been comprehensively upgraded.

DRIVING PERFORMANCE

New 112 DIN hp 1.6 litre D-4D turbodiesel offers fast throttle response and linear torque build-up over a wide rev range

First adoption of Stop & Start system in Verso

CO2 emissions of 119 g/km

Expanded choice of powertrains: 4 diesel and 2 petrol engines

New 1.6 D-4D

The 2014 Verso features an expanded line-up which introduces a new 1.6 D-4D (Direct injection — 4-stroke Diesel) engine to the range for the first time.

DESIGN

Choice of 10 exterior colours, including new Avantgarde Bronze

New bold 17" alloy wheel with a darker, smoked silver design

Introduction of 2 new seat upholstery choices: Dark Grey fabric with silver stitching and Light Grey fabric with leather side bolsters

New Tyre Pressure Warning System and gear shift lever design

The Verso combines the Toyota MPV's trademark, dual-zone styling with the company's Under Priority design language and Keen Look styling elements. A 2013 mid-life redesign has brought an increase in dynamism and desirability to the model range.

2014 Verso

Building on the existing range of 10 exterior colours and 16" and 17" alloy wheels, the 2014 Verso introduces a new Avantgarde Bronze paint, a new 7-spoke 16" alloy wheel and a bold, 5-spoke 17" alloy design with a darker, smoked silver finish.

Didier Leroy, Senior Managing Officer of Toyota Motor Corporation, and President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe (TME), said: "At Toyota, we believe that tackling environmental challenges facing our industry will require more than one single approach. Hybrid is at the core of our strategy towards sustainable mobility, but we also see a role for clean diesel in Europe. Working together with an industry leader like the BMW Group allows us to benefit from economies of scale to reduce development costs as well as improve our time-to-market."

TME's Belgium-based Technical Centre led the development of the Verso 1.6 D-4D, ensuring a seamless match between the engine and the Toyota gearbox and vehicle electronics, while safeguarding the comfort and dynamic performance of the original Verso. Several components were newly developed, ranging from engine mounts over a dual mass flywheel, a new gearbox housing and gearing and a Stop-and-Start system to further improve efficiency and reduce emissions.

Production of the Verso 1.6 D-4D will commence in January 2014 at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey in Adapazari, Turkey — the sole production facility of the Verso range which also produces the latest generation Toyota Corolla.

Sourcing diesel engines fits within a wider collaboration between the BMW Group and Toyota, under which the companies announced plans to:

Co-develop a fuel-cell system

Conduct a feasibility study for the joint development of a sports car platform

Work together on creating lightweight vehicle body technologies

Undertake joint research into lithium-air batteries

Tailored to meet the increasingly varied demands of today's MPV customer, every previous version of the Verso has been developed exclusively for the European market. Launched in 2002, the first generation model sold 100,289 units. Second generation Verso of 2004 achieved sales of 410,236 units, and the third generation model has sold 144,638 units since its launch in 2009.

Each successive generation has combined Toyota's legendary Quality, Durability and Reliability with outstanding value for money, exceptional roominess within compact exterior dimensions, and the true multi-purpose vehicle practicality and versatility of the company's Easy Flat seating system.

Building on these highly-prized core attributes, the new Verso targets several key areas for improvement, offering customers greater levels of style, dynamism, comfort and desirability to make it a compelling, no-compromise compact C-segment MPV choice.

It features Toyota's bold new design language with a clear family identity, improved interior quality and styling, a revised 2.0 D-4D engine with better torque delivery and lower CO2 emissions, lower NVH levels, and enhanced driving dynamics for improved ride comfort and a more responsive, engaging and enjoyable drive.

</pp:summary>

The new Verso represents a fresh, more powerful and sophisticated interpretation of the third generation Toyota MPV's distinctive, dual-zone styling, bringing an increase in dynamism and desirability to the design.

New, more aggressive and attractive front and rear styling, places the emphasis on width rather than height whilst, in profile, the new Verso retains the dynamic, full-length character line which delineates the bonnet and cabin from the chassis and rear loadspace.

To the front, the new Verso features the company's striking Under Priority design language and Keen Look styling elements, hallmarking it as the latest model in the Toyota family line-up, with a strong visual connection to the company's other core European models.

The Under Priority design features a large, trapezoidal lower grille set within a redesigned front bumper, and a smaller upper grille running full width between the new headlamps.

Dominated by a new, larger Toyota badge which is set lower than its predecessor, the upper grille features a central, chrome-plated horizontal trim bar which is visually extended into the headlamp clusters to accentuate the width of the new Verso.

Narrower and more aggressively styled, the headlamp clusters themselves incorporate Daytime Running Lights (DRLs). Higher grade models are equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps and LED DRLs.

The large lower grille is flanked by integral foglamps with chrome surround detailing. It features a piano black paint finish, twin chrome strips and a full-width, aerodynamics-enhancing, body-coloured lip spoiler, once again accentuating the width of the new Verso and emphasising its broad, planted stance.

In profile, the new Verso retains the model's trademark, dual-zone styling. This is clearly expressed by a strong character line which flows from the leading edge of the front bumper, rising through the lower edge of the doors before sweeping upwards through the C-pillar to define the roof-mounted spoiler.

The classic Verso profile is enhanced through smaller, more dynamic and aerodynamically efficient, foldable door mirrors featuring integrated turn signal lights, and a choice of two new alloy wheels. The 17" alloys share the design of their predecessor but feature a new, darker finish, whilst the new 16" alloys have a machine faced finish.

To the rear, a new bumper design incorporates an integral low level diffuser, emphasising the width and stability of the new model. The rear lamp clusters feature colour changes to the centre lens, and, on the boot lid, the Toyota badge is emphasised through the application of a chrome rear license plate garnish.

The new Verso will be available in a choice of 11 exterior colours, of which three are new Pearl White, Vivid Blue and Marine Blue.

Upgraded Interior Design with Improved Sensory Quality

The new Verso interior builds on the family-oriented versatility, ease of use, ergonomic efficiency and durability of its predecessor. Extensive revisions are designed to harmonise instrumentation and switchgear, and enhance both perceived and real cabin quality through new finishes and trim detailing.

The 'Smart Wave Dynamism' of the dashboard design -which lifts the cabin styling above the conventional functionality of a traditional MPV- has been retained. The design incorporates advanced switchgear ergonomics, and places the gear lever as close as possible to the steering wheel. The powerful, vertical definition of the centre console separates the focused functionality of the driver's zone from the relaxed comfort of the front passenger's zone.

The two zones are interconnected by a crisp 'wave' line running the full width of the fascia, which houses the driver's instrument binnacle. The binnacle, containing cylindrical speedometer and rev' counter dials, is offset to maximise the driver's view of the road ahead whilst still remaining within his field of vision.

The new Verso interior features the extensive use of new trim detailing and a softer feeling, satin black paint finish to enhance perceived cabin quality throughout. The upper glove box is now finished in soft touch material and the steering wheel is clad in Nappa leather.

Warm satin chrome trim highlights have been applied to the driver's instrument surrounds, the instrument binnacle hood rim, the air vents, instrument panel, gear shift bezel and door assist grips. The door handle itself is now finished in a new, satin black coating.

The presentation of instrumentation and switchgear has been harmonised through more consistent lighting and font sizing. The driver's meters are now back-lit in white for improved clarity and legibility, whilst the air conditioning dials and display, and all switchgear including window switches are illuminated in a deep orange for legibility without excessive distraction after dark.

A new rheostat switch allows for the simultaneous adjustment of both combination meter and all switchgear illumination, giving consistency to backlighting brightness and intensity throughout the interior.

Live (entry) and Active (mid) grade models feature a range of new seat fabrics — black with blue detailing for the Live grade and black with white accents with a 3D effect for Active grade models. Seat bolster support has been improved on all grades, the bolsters themselves finished in a smoother, more durable lamination.

Lounge (high) grade models are equipped with leather seat bolsters with double stitching, and a leather door trim and centre armrest finish. The Verso Lounge grade is also equipped with Smart Entry & Push Start, whilst other grades are available with a folding jack knife key.

A 2,340 mm by 1,280 mm, full-length Skyview panoramic roof is available, bringing significantly more light to the new interior and greatly enhancing perceptions of cabin spaciousness.

Exceptional Interior Roominess and Versatile Packaging

At 4,460 mm, the new Verso is just 20 mm longer than its predecessor, the redesigned front and rear of the vehicle accounting for increases in length of 15 mm and 5 mm respectively.

Despite its compact packaging, the new Verso offers exceptional interior roominess. It shares the previous model's long, 2,780 mm wheelbase, and boasts a best-in-class, 975 mm couple distance between the first and second row of seats.

The Toyota Easy Flat seating system offers true MPV flexibility, with 32 different seating permutations. Providing individual seats in both second and third rows which may be folded flat without headrest removal, second row seats with a sliding range of 195 mm, and reclining third row seatbacks, it is acknowledged as one of the most practical, flexible and intuitive seating designs available.

Completely flat with second and third row seats folded, the new Verso's loadspace is 1,575 mm long and 1,430 mm wide. With all three seating rows in place, the luggage volume measures 155 litres. With the third row seats folded, it rises to 440 litres.

The Trunk Management system, located beneath the rear loadspace of 5-seat models, is ideal for storing valuable items out of view and also provides storage for the luggage tonneau cover when not in use. Its capacity varies according to the choice of a temporary spare tyre or a tyre repair kit.

Seven-seat models equipped with a space-saver spare tyre offer an 11 litres storage box, whilst those featuring a tyre repair kit stowed in a tool box under the third row seats offer additional capacity sufficient to store three 6-pack cases of 1.5 litre plastic bottles.

As befits a true Multi-Purpose Vehicle, the new Verso offers a comprehensive range of storage compartments, including a twin compartment glovebox featuring a cooled upper section large enough to hold a 1.5 litre bottle and an 8.2 litre lower section.

It also has a spacious centre console box, generous door pockets, seat back storage beneath aviation-style, fold out tables with integral cupholders, a drawer beneath the front passenger seat, second row underfloor storage, an overhead console and driver and passenger pockets for mobile phone and MP3 player storage.

Lower NVH for Improved Cabin Quietness

The new Verso features upgraded cabin NVH measures. The dash silencer has been redesigned with improved sound damping between the engine bay and cabin, maximising engine sound absorption and wind noise insulation.

The new 2.0 D-4D diesel unit has also been made more quiet by a reduction in combustion noise.

Wind noise has simultaneously been reduced through better sound damping on the A-pillar, the adoption of a smaller, more aerodynamic door mirror design and improved sealing on all door corners.

In combination, these measures have resulted in a perceptibly quieter on-board environment. The cabin articulation index has improved from 0.76 to 0.83, further enhancing occupant comfort and promoting a greater sense of well-being in every seating position.

toyota news,2013 verso

Improved Electric Power Steering feel and response for a more confident, reassuring drive

Enhanced aerodynamics for high speed stability, reduced wind noise and improved fuel economy

</pp:summary>

The stability and ride comfort of a conventional passenger car are fundamental dynamic attributes of the C-MPV segment, and the Verso is already appreciated for its high level of stability and the confidence it inspires in its drivers.

In the new Verso, Toyota's engineers have focused on revisions to the vehicle's body rigidity, suspension and Electric Power Steering (EPS) to combine these essential attributes with improved ride comfort, greater body control and, most significantly, improved steering feel and response for more agile, engaging handling.

Revised Suspension set-up for Improved Ride Comfort

Both the front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension systems have been redeveloped. Damper and valve settings have been changed to combine stable handling with maximum ride comfort for all vehicle occupants.

Improved Steering Feel and Response

Improvements to steering feel and response have been achieved through both bodyshell rigidity enhancements and revisions to the Electric Power Steering itself.

Body rigidity has been improved through the addition of extra welding points to the tailgate opening surround and rear door pillar. And the front suspension system features new bracing and reinforcements. The increases in bodyshell and suspension mounting rigidity improve body control and the fidelity of the suspension geometry and, hence, the speed and accuracy of steering response.

In conjunction with these improvements in body control and suspension fidelity, the EPS control software has been revised. The result is an improvement in steering precision, linear response and feel the improved accuracy and feedback giving Verso drivers a stronger sense of connection to the road surface for greater confidence behind the wheel.

Enhanced Aerodynamics

Benefitting from a new frontal design and smaller door mirrors, the new Verso's overall aerodynamic performance has been improved by 5-10%. This has resulted in increased fuel efficiency, better NVH, a more comfortable ride and increased vehicle stability.

From the outset, wind tunnel analysis focused on harmonising the bodywork design, making the use of secondary, add-on aerodynamic trim components unnecessary.

Particular attention has been paid to the flow of air beneath the MPV. A smooth underfloor with engine, fuel tank and rear floor covers, wheel spats and a wing-shaped vertical fin to the rear all contribute to the streamlining of the airflow, the control of vertical body movement and the optimisation of both front and rear lift coefficients. The result is a flatter straight line ride, a more controlled yaw response, and enhanced rear stability.

Combining with these aerodynamic enhancements, 17" low rolling resistance tyres are available to further improve the new Verso's fuel efficiency.

toyota news,2013 verso

</pp:summary>

The new Verso will be equipped with a choice of five engines, all benefitting from the new frontal design's improved aerodynamic efficiency and the availability of low rolling resistance 17" tyres.

As a result, and with no loss of performance, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have decreased across the entire engine range, the latter from between 4 and 10 g/km.

The range comprises a substantially revised 124 DIN hp 2.0 litre D-4D diesel, 150 DIN hp and 177 DIN hp versions of a 2.2 litre D-CAT diesel, and a choice of 1.6 litre, 132 DIN hp and 1.8 litre, 147 DIN hp Valvematic petrol engines. All engines also benefit from the wide ranging advanced technologies and internal improvement programmes of Toyota Optimal Drive.

The 2.2 litre 150 DIN hp D-CAT diesel is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, the 177 DIN hp variant to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The CO2 emissions of the former have been lowered by 9 g/km to 169 g/km, and those of the latter by 6 g/km to 153 g/km.

Simultaneously, the average fuel consumption of the 150 DIN hp engine has been lowered to 6.4 l/100 km, and that of the 177 DIN hp unit to 5.8 l/100 km.

Both the 1.6 litre and 1.8 litre Valvematic petrol engines are equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. Both engines' CO2 emissions have been lowered by 4 g/km, to 154 and 158 g/km respectively. The average fuel consumption of the 1.6 litre engine has been reduced to 6.6 l/100 km, and that of the 1.8 litre unit to 6.8 l/100 km.

The 1.8 litre unit may also be equipped with a revised automatic Multidrive transmission which now incorporates a more 'stepped' gear shift feel, with engine revs building in a manner more closely linked to vehicle acceleration.

Revised 2.0 Litre D-4D Diesel Engine

In recognition of the 2.0 litre diesel powertrain's popularity within the C-MPV segment, representing some 47% of the mix, Toyota has extensively revised its 124 DIN hp 2.0 litre D-4D turbodiesel, which complies with Euro 5 emissions regulations and now comes standard with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

Mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, the unit has been revised to improve torque delivery at low rpm and reduce combustion noise. CO2 emissions have been lowered by 10 g/km to 129 g/km, and fuel consumption has fallen by 0.4 l/100 km to only 4.9 l/100 km.

The unit features a new variable nozzle turbocharger with a lower friction bearing system and an electric actuator, and the torque characteristics of each gear have been adjusted. As a result, maximum torque of 310 Nm is now available 200 rpm earlier and across a wider rev band, from 1,600-2,400 rpm, offering a marked improvement in higher gear throttle response.

CO2 emission-reducing lubrication and cooling circuit improvements include a 2-stage pressure oil pump with improved oil jet, an optimised water pump with a reduced flow rate, and a twin-chamber oil pan to improve engine warming speeds. Exhaust emissions are further lowered through a new glow plug control strategy and improvements to the construction and coating of the DPF.

The use of a resin cylinder head cover, oil cooler bracket and water pipe reduce engine weight by 5 kg. The reduction of friction through the adoption of a low friction vacuum pump, a low friction timing chain and low viscosity oil further enhance fuel efficiency. And combustion improvement through a new piston bowl shape and the new glow strategy has perceptibly lowered engine NVH.Overall, generating higher torque at lower revs, the engine is quieter and torque delivery has become more linear.

As an option, the towing capacity of Verso 2.0 D4D models can be increased by 200 kg, to 1,500 kg.

toyota news,2013 verso

</pp:summary>

A showcase for the company's European design and engineering capabilities, the new Toyota Verso makes its world debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. Together with the new Auris and Auris Touring Sports wagon, it represents part of the renewed C-segment product offensive for Toyota in Europe.

Building on the versatility, practicality and roominess of the current generation model, the new Verso brings greater levels of style, dynamism and comfort to the range. It features Toyota's new design language with a clear family identity, an improved interior, a revised 2.0 D-4D engine with lower CO2 emissions, and enhanced driving dynamics and NVH levels.

With over 470 changed parts, the new Verso represents a comprehensive mid-lifecycle model upgrade for Toyota in Europe.

Integral to Toyota's C-segment rejuvenation, the new Verso has been planned, designed, engineered and built under the leadership of Toyota Motor Europe. This is the company's first full-scale project to incorporate European-based Product Planning, Design, R & D and Purchasing from concept planning onwards, as part of Toyota's regional strategy.

Built exclusively at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey, the new Verso is expected to sell around 50,000 units in 2013, giving the company an approximate 5% segment share.

New Toyota Frontal Design Treatment

The new Verso represents a fresh, more powerful and sophisticated interpretation of the third generation Toyota MPV's distinctive, dual-zone styling. It retains the dynamic, full-length character line which delineates the bonnet and cabin from the chassis and rear loadspace in profile.

To the front, the new Verso features the company's striking Under Priority design language and Keen Look styling elements, hallmarking it as the latest model in the Toyota family line-up. The attractive new front and rear styling has been designed to reduce the perception of height whilst placing an emphasis on width and length.

Narrower and more aggressively styled, the headlamp clusters themselves incorporate new LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) and come with High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps on the Lounge (High) grade.

The large lower grille is flanked by integral foglamps with chrome surround detailing. It features a piano black paint finish, twin chrome strips and a full-width, body-coloured lip spoiler, once again accentuating the width of the new Verso and emphasising its broad, planted stance.

In profile, the new Verso retains the model's trademark, dual-zone styling. This is clearly expressed by a strong character line which flows from the leading edge of the front bumper, rising through the lower edge of the doors before sweeping upwards through the C pillar to define the roof-mounted spoiler.

The Verso profile is enhanced through smaller, more dynamic, foldable door mirrors featuring integrated turn signal lights, and a choice of two new alloy wheels. The 17" alloys share the design of their predecessor but feature a new, darker finish, whilst the new 16" alloys now have a machine faced finished.

To the rear, a new bumper design incorporates an integral low level diffuser, emphasising the width and stability of the new model. The rear lamp clusters feature colour changes to the centre and outer lenses, and, on the boot lid, the Toyota badge is emphasised through the application of a rear license plate garnish

The new Verso will be available in a choice of 11 exterior colours, of which three are new Pearl White, Vivid Blue and Solid Blue.

Upgraded Interior Design with Improved Sensory Quality

The new Verso interior features the extensive use of new trim detailing and a softer feeling, satin black paint finish to enhance perceived cabin quality throughout. The upper glove box is now finished in soft touch material, and the door trim, armrest and steering wheel are clad in Nappa leather.

Warm satin chrome trim highlights have been applied to the driver's instrument surrounds, the instrument binnacle hood rim, the air vents, instrument panel, gear shift bezel and door assist grips. The door handle itself is now finished in a new, two-layer paint coating.

Live (Entry) and Active (Mid) grade models feature a range of new seat fabrics — black and blue / turquoise for the Live level and black and white with a 3D effect for Active grade models. Seat bolster support has been improved on all grades, the bolsters themselves finished in a smoother more durable lamination.

Lounge grade models are equipped with leather bolsters with double stitching to match that of the door trim centre armrest. The Verso Lounge grade is also equipped with Smart Entry & Push Start whilst other grades are available with a folding jack knife key.

Despite its highly compact packaging, the Verso offers exceptional interior roominess, and boasts a best-in-class 975 mm couple distance between the first and second row of seats.

The Toyota Easy Flat-7 seating system offers true MPV flexibility, with 32 different seating permutations. Providing individual seats in both second and third rows, and a second row seat sliding range of 195 mm, it is acknowledged as one of the most practical, flexible and intuitive seating designs available.

Completely flat with second and third row seats folded, the new Verso's loadspace is 1,575 mm long and 1,430 mm wide. With all three seating rows in place, the luggage volume measures 155 litres. With the third row seats folded, it rises to 440 litres.

The Trunk Management system, located beneath the rear loadspace, is ideal for storing valuable items out of view. Its capacity varies according to five or seven seat usage, and the choice of a temporary spare tyre or a tyre repair kit. This space also provides storage for the luggage tonneau cover when not in use.

A 2,340 mm by 1,280 mm, full-length Skyview panoramic sunroof is available, bringing significantly more light to the new interior and greatly enhancing perceptions of cabin spaciousness.

Three Grade Line-up with Improved Standard Equipment

The new Verso carries over the three grade strategy of its predecessor. However, with an enhanced interior and an increase in standard equipment for each grade, it now represents even better value for money.

Live grade model standard equipment now includes front foglamps, a Follow Me Home headlamp function and the addition of heating and integrated turn signal lights to the electrically adjustable door mirrors.

To the already comprehensive Live grade, Active grade adds electrically folding door mirrors, a piano black paint finish front license garnish, chrome lower grille trim, chrome foglamp surrounds, a height adjustable front passenger seat, two-tone 16" machine faced alloy wheels and Toyota Touch, which incorporates a back monitor camera.

Lounge grade adds leather seat bolsters, armrest and door trim with double stitching. It features Smart Entry with push start, dual zone automatic air-conditioning, a Sensor Pack, rear side mirror sunshades, 17'' alloy wheels and High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps.

Toyota Touch, a 6.1 inch, full colour, touch-screen interface which represents a new approach to affordable, on-board multimedia systems, is now fitted as standard in the new Verso from the Active grade.

Building on the multimedia base unit, Toyota Touch & Go Plus equips the new Verso with an optional navigation system. Available with DAB/DAB+/DMB digital radio, the premium quality Toyota Touch Pro adds numerous advanced features including 3D city modelling, an on-line Points Of Interest search facility.

A comprehensive range of options includes a Sensor Pack with automatic wiper and headlamp operation and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a Skyview panoramic roof and High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps with integral LED DRLs.

A new option pack has been created with fleet customers in mind, which includes a leather steering wheel, cruise control and Toyota Touch.

The new Verso is equipped with a comprehensive range of active, passive and pedestrian safety features. With the launch of the current generation model in 2009, it achieved a maximum, 5-star Euro NCAP crash test rating.

Powertrains

The new Verso will be equipped with a choice of five engines, all benefitting from the wide ranging advanced technologies and internal improvement programmes of Toyota Optimal Drive. All engines' CO2 emissions of the New Verso have been lowered.

Mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, the 126 DIN hp 2.0 litre D-4D diesel has been revised to improve torque delivery at low rpm and reduce combustion noise. Simultaneously, CO2 emissions have been lowered below 130 g/km.

A 2.2 litre D-CAT diesel developing 177 DIN hp is available, mated to a choice of either 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions.

As an option, the towing capacity of the Verso 2.0 D-4D model has been increased by 200 kg, to 1,500 kg.

A choice of 1.6 litre, 132 DIN hp and 1.8 litre, 147 DIN hp Valvematic petrol engines will also be available, both equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. The latter may also be equipped with a revised automatic Mutidrive transmission which now incorporates a more 'stepped' gear shift feel, with engine revs building in a manner more closely linked to vehicle acceleration.

Driving Dynamics

The Verso has been designed to offer all the stability and ride comfort of a conventional passenger car. Revisions to the driving dynamics of the new Verso equip it with even greater body control and more agile handling.

Body rigidity has been improved through the addition of extra welding points. The front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension has been tuned for greater ride comfort, and the electric power steering revised to improve steering feel and feedback.

Occupant comfort has also been enhanced through the reduction of interior noise levels. Sound damping on the A pillar and the introduction of smaller, more aerodynamic door mirrors has reduced wind noise. And engine noise has been lowered by a reduction in combustion noise and improved sound damping between the engine bay and cabin.

toyota news,2013 verso

Representing a key step in Toyota's product offensive in the European C-segment, the new Auris reflects Toyota's determination to engineer more appealing, dynamically engaging cars.

It offers a bolder and more confident design, a higher quality interior, improved driving dynamics and further efficiency enhancements to its powertrain line-up — including the market-leading technology of its flagship, full hybrid model.

Reinforcing Toyota's commitment to bring leading technology to the widest possible audience, the new Auris Hybrid will be available from launch and is expected to account for around 1/3rd of all new Auris sales in Europe.

Installed in the lighter, more aerodynamic new Auris, the revised full hybrid powertrain will deliver class leading efficiency of over 1.5 PS for every g/km of CO2 emitted.

New Auris Touring Sports

The new Toyota Auris Touring Sports adds the popular wagon body style to the model range's comprehensive choice of powertrains. Wagon variants currently represent 25% of the mainstream C-segment sales mix, and the new Touring Sports will be stylish addition to the Auris range and the first wagon in the segment available with a full hybrid powertrain alongside petrol and diesel engines. Combining versatility and dynamic design without compromising loadspace or luggage capacity through clever packaging, the new Auris Hybrid Touring Sports represents a further diversification of Toyota's reknowned full hybrid technology.

New Verso

Integral to Toyota's C-segment product offensive, the new Verso is a showcase for the company's European design and engineering capabilities. The new Verso features Toyota's new design language with a clear family identity, an improved interior, a revised 2.0 D-4D engine with improved performance and lower CO2 emissions, and enhanced driving dynamics and reduced NVH levels.

Yaris Trend

The new Yaris Trend features unique exterior styling and model-specific interior finishes, textures and colours to attract young, urban-based, design-focused customers.

TRD Performance Line Accessories for GT86

A range of GT86-specific, TRD (Toyota Racing Development) aerodynamic- and performance-enhancing parts is now available throughout Europe for the first time. A GT86 equipped with TRD Performance Line accessories showcases the comprehensive range of exterior, interior and mechanical components available. TRD parts are not grouped into packages, and are each available individually.

GT86 Racing Simulator

Designed to perform just like actual car on a race circuit, the GT86 Racing Simulator is a fusion between a real Toyota GT86 and an advanced computer simulation system. The driver steers, shifts, brakes and accelerates the GT86 using the original controls. The simulator then uses a state-of-the-art motion system to respond to driver input and deliver an un-paralleled realistic driving experience. The windshield is a Full HD monitor for the drivers and a Lucas Arts THX Surround system is used to supply sound from the racetrack.
