]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>The all-new Toyota C-HR has secured the top five-star rating in independent Euro NCAP safety testing. On top of offering excellent occupant protection in case of an accident, the model also obtained very good results in active safety.</p>

<p>The C-HR achieved an excellent 95 per cent score for overall adult occupant protection; 77 per cent for child occupants; 76 per cent for pedestrian protection performance; and 78 per cent for safety assist performance.</p>

<p>In its report, Euro NCAP commended the new C-HR for its good result in the frontal offset test and for achieving maximum points in both the side barrier test and the more severe side pole impact.</p>

<p>The Toyota C-HR&rsquo;s crash test performance reflects the fundamental strength of its Toyota New Global Architecture-based platform and body, which make good use of strategic reinforcements and use of high-strength steels to absorb and channel impact forces away from the cabin.</p>

<p>As part of Toyota&rsquo;s commitment to democratise advanced safety equipment, Toyota Safety Sense is fitted as standard across the full C-HR range. This safety pack includes a Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Recognition, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with steering control, Automatic High Beam (AHB) and Road Sign Assist<a href="#_ftn1"><sup><sup>[1]</sup></sup></a> (RSA).</p>

<p>The C-HR&rsquo;s Pre-Collision System scored maximum points in the tests at low, city speeds, with collisions being avoided at all test speeds. Also at highway speeds, Toyota Safety Sense revealed good performance. When approaching a slower-moving car, collision was avoided at all test</p>

<p>speeds. And when approaching a stationary car, or a decelerating car, collision was avoided in most cases and mitigated in others.</p>

<p>The system&rsquo;s Pedestrian Recognition function also showed good performance as collisions with the pedestrian target were avoided in all low speed tests and, at higher speed tests, the impact was avoided or mitigated.</p>

<p>&ldquo;These very good safety results, particularly in active safety, show that Toyota C-HR has much more to offer than an outstanding style. Our aim was to make C-HR dynamically fun and safe to drive&rdquo;, says Karl Schlicht, Toyota Motor Europe EVP for Sales. &ldquo;Safety is and will remain very important in our product development. Toyota Safety Sense is a major step towards safer cars and it is now rolled-out to our entire line-up, including its standardization on the new 2017 Toyota Yaris&rdquo;, concludes Karl.</p>

<p>Last night, actress and model Milla Jovovich starred alongside acast of talented faces from across Europe, in the world&rsquo;s first drive through immersivetheatre experience.</p>

<p>The seven-scene interactive production - entitled &lsquo;The Night That Flows&rsquo; - was staged within the immense space of The Printworks in London. The experience saw 100 guests immersed inthe story of one amazing fictional night as it unfolded across five European cities, including Berlin, Milan, Paris, Barcelona and London.</p>

<p>The story, narrated throughout by Milla Jovovich, centred around guests finding their perfect flow and took inspiration from the &lsquo;flowing&rsquo; design of the new Toyota C-HR - created to look like it is always moving, even when at a standstill.</p>

<p>Participants were thrust into the limelight as part of the event, taking centre-stage in the live multi-sensory performance and interacting with a variety of different characters as they made their way through the myriad of scenes.</p>

<p>Each scene brought with it unexpected twists and exciting scenarios, all inspired by key features of the car - from the dynamic drive and stylish diamond design, to the sophisticated interior and JBL concert hall sound system.</p>

<p>The journey began in Berlin, where guests were transported through the streets of the city in the C-HR using innovative projection footage captured at the Berlin International Festival of Light.</p>

<p>From Berlin, guests flowed seamlessly into Milan where they experienced their very own taste of a high fashion catwalk, complete with paparazzi. Following their catwalk moment, guests were led by Fabio Attanasio, Italian fashion designer and founder of &lsquo;The Bespoke Dudes&rsquo;, and Italian model Giorgia Palmas, into the backstage preparations of an Italian fashion show. Completely enclosed in a mirrored space, the C-HR became the star of the unique fashion show, revolving a full 360 degrees so that every angle of the car&rsquo;s dynamic design and elegantly integrated detail was exposed.</p>

<p>Propelled into a Parisian casino, guests joined an excitable crowd gathered around a roulette table, as French croupier Etienne Pradier invited them to take part in a game of chance. No sooner had they placed their bets on the roulette table, they were greeted by French rally driver Guerlain Chicherit, who led them in an exhilarating drive around a giant projected roulette table, showcasing the car&rsquo;s driving dynamics, fluid motion and controlled responses.</p>

<p>Travelling through to the next city, Barcelona, guests were surrounded by a flash-mob style club scene, with Spanish DJ Cuartero leading the crowd as the soundtrack played out over the C-HR&rsquo;s JBL sound system.</p>

<p>The journey concluded with guests arriving in a London bar, where they were greeted by the innovative mixologist duo, Alex Kratena and Simone Caporale and joined by Milla herself.</p>

<p>The event was created by a team comprised of some of the world&rsquo;s finest theatrical and technical design talent, all brought together under The Department's Creative Directors Jonny Grant and Hamish Jenkinson, with Jessica Rees Middleton as Executive Producer.</p>

<p>Speaking about the event, Milla Jovovich said: &ldquo;I was thrilled to be asked to be a part of this event - I love that immersive theatre takes everyone on a completely unique journey and that no one experience is the same. It&rsquo;s something I&rsquo;ve always wanted to do, so when Toyota approached me with the idea, I was intrigued and knew I had to be a part of it. The C-HR is a completely new concept for Toyota - rooted in style and quality. It&rsquo;s a beautiful looking car and incredibly stylish inside. The brand is always looking for &lsquo;a better way&rsquo; to design or do things &ndash; and I&rsquo;m a huge fan of that philosophy. Bringing everything to life was a creative challenge, but we found our flow eventually&hellip;and we hope everyone who came to the event left feeling inspired to find their perfect flow too&rdquo;</p>

<p>Jan Verhaegen, Manager Brand and Marketing Communications at Toyota Europe said: &ldquo;The C-HR is a completely new concept for the Toyota brand and totally different to anything we&rsquo;ve ever created before. Over the span of 24 hours, these visual storytellers each made their way through Madrid with a Toyota C-HR in search of the perfect shot. The result is a collection of 24 images, each capturing the design of the car in a highly personal and creative way.</p>

]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>Toyota&rsquo;s new C-HR compact crossover is set to hit the dealerships in late November, but you can see it now in Paris&rsquo; Champs Elys&eacute;es. Equipped with the latest-generation Toyota hybrid powertrain, it&rsquo;s the star attraction of Le Rendez-Vous Toyota&rsquo;s &lsquo;Clean Technologies&rsquo; show. Three display models allow visitors to take their time discovering its bold styling and state-of-the-art technology. There&rsquo;s also a demonstration of the Toyota C-HR&rsquo;s tailor-made JBL sound system.</p>

<p>On display alongside the three C-HRs is the RAV4. Initially launched in 1994 as the forerunner of the compact SUV segment, the latest RAV4 model is now available with a hybrid powertrain. This version accounts for most of the RAV4 sales in France.</p>

<p>Straight from winning the Monte Carlo e-Rally, the hydrogen Mirai is in Toyota&rsquo;s brand store to illustrate how &lsquo;Clean Technologies&rsquo; also work for long journeys. Producing electricity by combining hydrogen and air in its fuel cell and only emitting water, the Mirai achieves a driving range of over 500 km.</p>

<p>The compact battery-driven electric vehicles developed by Toyota for shorter urban journeys, i-ROAD and COMS, are regulars at Le Rendez-Vous Toyota. They have been one of the components of the public transport network around Grenoble since 2014, as part of Cit&eacute; Lib by Ha:mo&rsquo;s three-year experimental scheme.</p>

<p>&lsquo;Clean Technologies&rsquo; are also being put through their paces in competition, as shown by the TS030 Hybrid from the World Endurance Championships &ndash; now sporting Toyota Gazoo Racing&rsquo;s new livery &ndash; and the EV P002 full electric racing car developed by Toyota Motorsport GmbH, which set a record on the N&uuml;rburgring Nordschleife in 2011.</p>

<p>Besides the Toyota C-HR&rsquo;s JBL demonstration, Le Rendez-Vous Toyota allows plenty of room for activities such as children&rsquo;s drawing competition Dream Car Art Contest* (now in its 11<sup>th</sup> year), a reaction game to test your driving reaction times, and a photo booth to share memories of your visit.</p>

<p>With the C-HR, Toyota targets a clear and singular customer profile. Predominantly driven by emotional considerations, these customers want individuality, and to be the first to try new experiences and products. <p>Inspired by what he learned from meeting with these customers, C-HR Chief Engineer Hiroyuki Koba focused persistently on their requirements throughout the development process, setting high demands for design and perceived quality.</p>

<p><strong>A NEW DESIGN DIRECTION FOR THE CROSSOVER SEGMENT</strong></p>

<p>The all-new Toyota C-HR introduces a distinctive styling that brings newfound dynamism and sensuality to the crossover market, combining a coupe-like upper body with the powerful underpinnings of an SUV.</p>

<p><strong>4,360 mm long,</strong> 1,795 mm wide, 1,555 mm high (Hybrid) and with a 2,640 mm wheelbase, the production vehicle remains remarkably true to the concept car&rsquo;s exterior which was first shown at the Paris Motorshow in 2014, and which registered extremely well with target customers.</p>

<p>Under the concept of &ldquo;Sensual Speed-Cross&rdquo;, and featuring a diamond architectural theme with wheel arches projecting prominently at all four corners to emphasise the new crossover&rsquo;s strength and rigidity, the C-HR modulated structure combines a powerful lower body and raised ground clearance with the slim and sleek cabin profile of a coupe.</p>

<p>Viewed from any angle, the C-HR&rsquo;s combination of facetted gemstone-like shapes with fluid surfaces and elegantly integrated detailing create a delicate balance of precision and sensuality.</p>

<p>The front represents a further development of Toyota&rsquo;s Under Priority and Keen Look design identity. The slender upper grille flows from the Toyota badge into the sleek, aggressive wing extremities of the headlamp clusters and wraps fully around the front corners of the vehicle.</p>

<p>The movement of the blacked out rocker panel towards the front and rear wheels, along with the shoulder axis that runs through to the front and rear, emphasise the fast-looking, &lsquo;lift-up&rsquo; feel of the thin body.</p>

<p>The C-HR&rsquo;s coupe-like styling is further enhanced by disguised rear door handles integrated within the C pillar and, essential to the representation of speed within the design, the powerful projection of the sweeping roofline into a large, highly aerodynamic, skeletal frame rear spoiler.</p>

<p>To the rear, the strongly tapered cabin integrates a top-hinged tailgate giving access to the loadspace that can accommodate luggage for 5 people. This contrasts with the pronounced flaring of the wheel arches, which give the new crossover a wide and extremely powerful stance.</p>

<p>Standing proud of the tapering body work, prominent rear light clusters may also be equipped with LED lamp technology to give the rear view of the C-HR an equally expressive visual signature.</p>

<p><strong>SOPHISTICATED INTERIOR DESIGN WITH OUTSTANDING SENSORY QUALITY</strong></p>

<p>A new departure for Toyota, the interior styling represents a new &lsquo;Sensual Tech&rsquo; design concept combining high-tech functionality with a sensual and fashionable style. It embodies a driver focused area within an airy, expansive cabin space.</p>

<p><strong>The warm,</strong> welcoming ambiance of an airy, expansive cabin space was created by the seamless layered architecture of the instrument panel that continues through to the door trim with a stylish ornamentation and a piano black panel. It offers a contrast between sensual surfacing and crisp lines to deliver a fresh, yet comfortable environment.</p>

<p>The driver oriented area incorporates innovative details and intuitive, approachable high technology. All operating switchgear, and an 8&rdquo; display audio touch-screen featuring a redesigned and improved HMI (Human Machine Interface) with Toyota&rsquo;s Multimedia &rsquo;16 navigation platform and enhanced connected services are slightly oriented towards the driver.</p>

<p>In conjunction with the asymmetrical centre console design, this brings all controls within easy reach of the driver, whilst still allowing front passenger access to the relevant switchgear.</p>

<p>Because the touch-screen stands proud of the instrument panel rather than being enclosed by it, the upper dashboard is considerably lower in depth, further helping driver visibility.</p>

<p>A unique new two-tiered front seat design combines a slender, sporting upper section with a more strongly bolstered and supportive lower area, these differences emphasised through the use of differing tones, textures and patterns within the upholstery.</p>

<p>Targeting class-leading sensory quality (SQ), and knowing that C-HR customers will also have competitors from premium brands on their shopping list, the C-HR interior represents the earliest involvement yet of Toyota&rsquo;s European SQ team in the design process.</p>

<p>Working closely with the headquarters design team to maintain the original interior styling concept, the SQ team have focused painstakingly on component quality, and the consistency of grain, texture, shape, colour and illumination in every element, even the stitch groove radii of the seats.</p>

<p>Reinforcing the link between interior and exterior design, many switches use a similar shape, reflecting the diamond motif of the exterior body shell. The same diamond theme is also visible in the door trim pattern, the headliner, the JBL speaker grilles and tweeter shape, and even the needles of the driver&rsquo;s analogue instrument dials.</p>

<p>A carefully considered choice of finishes is essential to the harmonious, consistent, one-piece look of the new interior. There are three main surface finishes &ndash; leather-like for all background surfaces, a smooth Nappa grain for all touching surfaces and technical grain for all functional elements such as switchgear.</p>

<p>Decorative elements are finished in high quality piano black and satin silver trim, and the clear blue instrument and switchgear illumination has been carefully fine-tuned to ensure consistency of hue, even on adjacent reflective surfaces of differing colours.</p>

<p>This outstanding new interior design is available in a choice of three colour schemes: Dark Grey, Black/Blue and Black/Brown.</p>

<p><strong>EQUIPMENT LEVELS TO SUIT THE MOST DEMANDING CUSTOMERS</strong></p>

<p>Reflecting the demands of its target customer, the Toyota C-HR can be equipped with a wide variety of features.</p>

<p><strong>As part of Toyota&rsquo;s</strong> commitment to democratise advanced safety equipment, Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the range. The system includes a Pre-Collision System (including Pedestrian Recognition), Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with steering control, Automatic High Beam and Road Sign Assist<sup>1</sup>.</p>

<p>Top-of-the-range customers will be able to specify heated seats, a smart entry system, privacy glass, bespoke upholstery including part-leather seats, Toyota&rsquo;s revolutionary S-IPA system (Simple Intelligent Park Assist), 18&rdquo; alloy wheels and Bi-tone metallic paintwork.</p>

<p><strong>TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE</strong></p>

<p>Toyota Safety Sense helps to reduce the risk of a collision and delivers additional benefits by making life easier for the driver and reducing fatigue.</p>

<p><strong>Pre-Collision system</strong></p>

<p>At speed ranges of between 10 km/h and the vehicle&rsquo;s top speed this system uses a front-mounted monocular camera sensor and millimeter-wave radar sensor to detect vehicles and pedestrians on the road ahead. If it calculates a risk of a collision, it automatically warns the driver with a buzzer and alert in the multi-information display. At the same time the Pre-Collision Brake Assist engages to provide extra braking force the moment the brake pedal is pressed. If the system determines that the possibility of a frontal collision with a vehicle or pedestrian is extremely high, the brakes are automatically applied to help avoid the collision or help reduce the impact of the collision.</p>

<p>Toyota&rsquo;s improvement of the technology has enabled it to recognize and react to the presence of pedestrians as well as vehicles and to function across a wider range of speeds.</p>

<p><strong>Adaptive Cruise Control</strong></p>

<p>The Toyota C-HR&rsquo;s Adaptive Cruise Control with Full Speed Range Following Function makes use of the same millimeter-wave radar as the Pre-Collision system to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, slowing the car to a standstill if necessary and accelerating smoothly back to the pre-selected cruising speed once the way is clear.</p>

<p><strong>Lane Departure Alert</strong></p>

<p>Lane Departure Alert uses the camera on the windscreen to track the vehicle&rsquo;s course between lane markings painted on the road surface. If it judges that the Toyota C-HR is about to move out of its lane without the turn indicator being used, the system sounds a buzzer and lights up a warning on the multi-information display. If the vehicle is still moving outside the lane, it will apply light steering force to assist the driver to bring the vehicle back on course.</p>

<p><strong>Automatic High Beam</strong></p>

<p>Automatic High Beam uses the same windscreen-mounted camera as the Lane Departure Alert. This recognizes the lights of oncoming vehicles or traffic ahead, automatically switching the headlights to low beam to avoid dazzling other road users and returning them to high beam as soon as the road is clear, maximizing night-time illumination and the driver&rsquo;s field of vision.</p>

<p><strong>Road Sign Assist</strong></p>

<p>Road Sign Assist uses the front camera to recognize principal highway/motorway warning and command signs. These are then repeated on the multi-information display, reducing the risk of the driver not being aware of speed limits, lane closures and other important information.</p>

<p><strong>Advanced safety and driver assistance systems</strong></p>

<p>The Toyota C-HR is available with additional systems that support safer driving by giving the driver better real-time information about the area immediately around the car, including a Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.</p>

<p>The Blind Spot Monitor uses radar sensors mounted on the rear corners of the vehicle to detect nearby vehicles in adjacent lanes as they move into the driver&rsquo;s blind spot. The driver is alerted to their presence by LED warning indicators in the door mirror on the appropriate side of the car. The LED indicators will remain illuminated as long as the vehicle remains in the blind spot. If the driver operates the turn indicators, intending to move into path of the vehicle, the LEDs will flash rapidly to draw further attention to the hazard.</p>

<p>The same radars are used to provide the Rear Cross Traffic Alert, monitoring approaching traffic from either side as the vehicle is reversed out of a parking space and warning the driver if any vehicles are detected.</p>

<p><strong>Simple Intelligent Parking Assist system</strong></p>

<p>The Toyota C-HR offers Toyota&rsquo;s new Simple Intelligent Parking Assist (S-IPA) system, which uses an array of sensors to identify viable parking spaces and surrounding objects. Improvements to the technology allow it to work in parking spaces up to 22 per cent smaller than previously.</p>

<p>The driver stops the car next to the parking space and pushes a single button to engage S-IPA, which guides the car to the correct position for reverse maneuvering into the space. This system was developed to utilize the corner sensors for the parking assist.</p>

<p><strong>CONCERT HALL SOUND</strong></p>

<p>Recognizing the importance that the Toyota C-HR target customer attaches to the quality of the in-car entertainment system, the car can be equipped with a tailor-made JBL premium audio system comprising an 8-channel, 576 Watt stereo amplifier and 9-speakers, including two newly patented acoustic JBL wave guides, known as horn tweeters. It provides the ultimate sound reproduction in the C-crossover segment.</p>

<p>Because various elements of the interior such as the windows and upholstery, as well as the rigidity of the body structure surrounding each speaker, can have a significant impact on system sound quality, the system is the result of particularly close collaboration between JBL and Toyota&rsquo;s engineers from early in the design process.</p>

<p>An in-depth customer analysis was taken into account for the system design and resulted in the orientation of the speaker layout and the use of a precisely integrated, A pillar-mounted horn tweeter -a JBL system signature- to deliver crisp, clear sound.</p>

<p>As well the two 25 mm horn tweeters and acoustic wave guides, the system further features two 80 mm wide-dispersion units and two 17 cm sub-woofers in the front of the C-HR, and, in the rear, two 15 cm full-range speakers and a 19 cm sub-woofer in a dedicated, 10-litre, ported enclosure in the boot.</p>

<p>Available in combination with the navigation option, the JBL premium audio system also incorporates lossless audio encoding.</p>

<p>The partnership between Toyota and JBL started in 1996 and has been successfully expanded since that time. Trusted by music professionals, JBL audio systems are used in major concert halls, venues and stadiums throughout the world (80% of live concerts, 70% of all recording studios and 90% of all THX-certified movie theatres).</p>

<p>Quality is the common focus of both companies, which has resulted in the all-new, uncompromised premium audio system specifically tailored for the C-HR.</p>

<p><strong>STATE OF THE ART POWERTRAINS</strong></p>

<p>The Toyota C-HR is equipped with an engine-range that is designed to deliver exactly the fluent, engaging driving behaviour that its customers are looking for. This is most powerfully expressed by the segment-unique, range-topping, full hybrid version, the intrinsic characteristics of which guarantee a smooth, jolt-free ride.</p>

<p><strong>Fitted with the latest-generation</strong> hybrid power plant, the Toyota C-HR generates CO<sub>2</sub> emissions as low as 82 g/km &ndash; a figure unrivalled within its segment &ndash; and returns combined fuel consumption of only 3.6 l/100 km.</p>

<p>Delivering 90 kW/122 DIN hp, this new hybrid powertrain is not only more efficient and lighter than the previous system, but also offers sharper performance. Detailed design changes to the engine have resulted in a thermal efficiency of 40% &ndash; a world-beating performance for a petrol unit.</p>

<p>Other hybrid system components have been made lighter and smaller, and have been repositioned for optimum packaging, further contributing to the car&rsquo;s low centre of gravity.</p>

<p>This new hybrid powertrain offers the response and the fluidity of a dynamic driving style that particularly suits the Toyota C-HR&rsquo;s dynamic design philosophy.</p>

<p>The Toyota C-HR is also available with a new 1.2 litre turbo engine, which debuted in the Auris. Delivering 85 kW/116 DIN hp and 185 Nm of torque, this unit generates CO<sub>2</sub> emission from 125 g/km and returns combined fuel consumption from 5.5 l/100 km. It may be mated to either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a Continuously Variable Transmission. CVT equipped versions are available with either front- or all-wheel drive.</p>

<p>And finally, a 2-litre 144 DIN hp/107 kW, 188 Nm CVT-only model will be available for certain markets (Ukraine and Caucasus).</p>

<p><strong>NEW HYBRID SYSTEM</strong></p>

<p>The Toyota C-HR is equipped with the new generation of Toyota&rsquo;s signature hybrid powertrain.</p>

<p>Toyota has focused its efforts on making this next generation of hybrids even easier and more intuitive to drive. The system has been set up so that it gives a natural, immediate, but smooth response to any accelerator pedal input. Refined and confident, it delivers the right level of performance.</p>

<p>But of course, fuel economy has been improved as well, as demonstrated in new Toyota C-HR&rsquo;s combined cycle economy starting from just 3.6 l/100 km. The new hybrid system comes in a more compact package that is lighter in weight and lower in cost. It reflects significant advances in battery, electric motor and petrol engine technologies.</p>

<p>The new hybrid battery offers higher energy density. Whilst its total power was maintained, its size could be reduced by 10%. And what&rsquo;s more, it can now absorb 28% more energy in the same amount of time, which means that it charges faster than before. The electric motors are smaller in size, yet also provide a better power-to-weight ratio. And the thermal efficiency of the petrol engine reaches more than 40 per cent, a world&rsquo;s best for a petrol unit.</p>

<p><strong>Improved petrol engine</strong></p>

<p>The Toyota C-HR&rsquo;s hybrid system features a 1.8-litre VVT-i Atkinson cycle petrol engine. Compared to the third generation Prius, the unit has been completely re-engineered to deliver significantly better fuel economy. The gas flow, combustion, cooling and knock control have all been improved and much more effective use is made of exhaust gas recirculation.</p>

<p>Toyota has developed a heat recovery system that uses spent exhaust gas to speed the warming up of engine coolant. This means fuel can be saved because the hybrid system is able to stop the engine earlier and more often when it isn&rsquo;t needed to power the vehicle. The engine is also helped to reach its optimum operating temperature more quickly thanks to a new dual-passage cooling system that can reduce the volume of coolant flowing into the engine, when required. This helps improving efficiency during cold weather.</p>

<p>Further work has been done to reduce energy losses, particularly through eliminating friction. Measures include the use of thin-section, resin-coated connecting rod bearings and a low-friction camshaft chain. Friction created by the piston skirts, rotating parts and oil pump has been reduced and a new electric water pump has helped cut the level of losses.</p>

<p>Conical &ldquo;beehive&rdquo;-type springs have been adopted to reduce the valvetrain load. And, to ensure comprehensive improvement, the entire engine underwent CAE analysis to achieve the best rigidity and to reduce noise and vibration.</p>

<p>The intake and exhaust systems came under particular scrutiny, resulting in an engine that enjoys better breathing, air filtration, packaging efficiency, reliability and quietness. The air filter has been made smaller and reduced in height, which helped the designers bring down the line of the hood. The new intake system has a resonator that creates less noise at noticeable frequencies and the intake duct is made of a porous material that suppresses resonance.</p>

<p>A fresh air inlet duct has been added to make sure ample air volume is obtained at motorway speeds and a clever air/fluid separating structure has been added to keep water and snow from mixing with the intake air. Should the fresh air duct fill with water or snow, a secondary inlet serves as the air intake.</p>

<p>A thinner silencer secures optimum performance and noise reduction, while also improving the underbody aerodynamics and avoiding any intrusion on the space available in the trunk.</p>

<p>The engine block has V-shaped drilled paths that reduce losses in water jacket pressure. There is also a new water jacket spacer which helps control cylinder wall temperatures in the combustion chamber, reducing friction and preventing engine knock, which in turn supports optimum ignition timing.</p>

<p>Engine cooling has been improved with a new cooling module structure and attachment, and a redesign that accommodates a lower hood line and helps reduce the car&rsquo;s centre of gravity. There is a new grille shutter behind the radiator which automatically closes when full airflow isn&rsquo;t required, improving aerodynamic performance and saving fuel.</p>

<p>While engine cooling helps improve anti-knock performance, it can lead to an increase in cooling heat loss. To help counter this, Toyota engineers have developed a new water jacket spacer to control temperature on the surface of the cylinder. This keeps engine oil warmer with lower viscosity and reduces the temperature fluctuation. This helps reduce friction and allows more engine torque to be generated. At the top end of the temperature scale it reduces temperatures in the combustion chamber.</p>

<p>The engine&rsquo;s maximum output of 98 DIN hp/72 kW is delivered at 5,200 rpm, with peak torque of 142 Nm at 3,600 rpm.</p>

<p><strong>World-best thermal efficiency</strong></p>

<p>Thermal efficiency is a measurement of how well an engine converts the energy available in its fuel into usable energy to power the vehicle.</p>

<p>As a result of the large-volume exhaust gas recirculation system, improvements in combustion efficiency and innovative ways of managing heat and reducing friction, the new engine has a maximum 40 per cent thermal efficiency, the highest level in the world for a mass-produced petrol engine. This surpasses the 37 per cent of the first Prius&rsquo; 1.5-litre unit and the 38.5 per cent level of the 1.8-litre engine in the third generation Prius.</p>

<p><strong>Improved exhaust gas recirculation</strong></p>

<p>The exhaust gas recirculation system has an EGR cooler which lowers the temperature of the gas being circulated, thereby reducing the temperature of the intake mixture and reducing risk of engine knock. This allows ignition timing to be fully optimized, which contributes to better thermal efficiency.</p>

<p><strong>Multi-shaft transaxle &ndash; a hybrid first</strong></p>

<p>The new generation hybrid system has a redesigned transaxle that offers more efficient performance and packaging and reduced weight. A gear train with the two electric motor-generators placed on multiple axes has been adopted to shorten the overall length by 47 mm compared to the previous generation hybrid system.</p>

<p>The transaxle houses four components: two electric motor-generators (MG1 and MG2); a single planetary gear; and a reduction gear to the final drive. MG1 serves primarily as a generator, converting any surplus power from the petrol engine into electricity, which can be stored in the HV battery. It also serves as the engine&rsquo;s starter motor. MG2 is the electric drive motor, which also acts as a generator when the car is in regenerative braking mode. It drives the car from start-up, at low speed and in EV (electric vehicle) mode and is the sole propulsion method when the vehicle is in reverse.</p>

<p><strong>Improved hybrid software</strong></p>

<p>Updates to the hybrid system software allow the Toyota C-HR to draw more on its electric drivetrain, allowing it to accelerate in a low engine rev range. It also has permitted the speed range of the electric motor (the range in which the electric motor can be used exclusively) to be increased by 60 per cent, compared to the third generation Prius. This means there is less dependency on the petrol engine at higher speeds, improving fuel economy.</p>

<p><strong>Smaller, better electric motors</strong></p>

<p>The two motor-generators are all-new and are smaller and lighter than before to suit the new multi-shaft transaxle design, with no negative affect on fuel economy.</p>

<p>Higher motor speed and new forced water-convection cooling in place of air cooling improve the efficiency of the electric-drive motor (MG2), which delivers 53 kW of power and 163 Nm of torque.</p>

<p><strong>Fully redesigned power control unit</strong></p>

<p>The power control unit (PCU) has been totally redesigned, resulting in a 33 per cent reduction in size, a six per cent weight saving and a 20 per cent reduction in electrical losses.</p>

<p>The PCU is the multi-purpose electrical heart of the vehicle, housing the inverter/voltage booster, a DC/DC converter for auxiliary power and the electronic control for the motor-generators.</p>

<p>In place of a belt-driven alternator the Toyota C-HR uses a DC/DC converter to recharge the 12-volt auxiliary battery by using the HV battery energy.</p>

<p><strong>Nickel-metal Hydride HV battery</strong></p>

<p>The nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery is more compact, and is located entirely beneath the rear seats, avoiding any intrusion in the load space. It has increased cooling efficiency and a wider regeneration range.</p>

<p><strong>1.2T ENGINE: GOOD PERFORMANCE AND LOW CONSUMPTION</strong></p>

<p>The 1.2T engine uses advanced technologies that allow the engine to change from the Otto-cycle to the Atkinson cycle under low loads, it has vertical vortex high tumble air flow intake ports, an exhaust manifold integrated in the cylinder-head and advanced heat management. To this, the 1.2T adds a direct injection system, as well as a water-cooled turbo and heat-exchanger. Furthermore, the VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing &ndash; intelligent) system known from the Aygo and Yaris 1.0 engine, is upgraded to a VVT-iW (Variable Valve Timing - intelligent Wide) system, which allows even more flexibility in the valve-timing.</p>

<p>The combination of these technologies results in outstanding performance and efficiency. For a displacement of 1.197cm<sup>3</sup>, the engine delivers 116 DIN hp (85kW) and a constant torque of 185 Nm between 1.500 and 4.000 rpm. It will push the Toyota C-HR from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.9 seconds and the top speed is set at 190 km/h. All of this is achieved despite a strong focus on fuel consumption and CO<sub>2</sub> &ndash; the car achieves 5.5/100 km on the combined cycle, and delivers just 125g/km of CO<sub>2</sub>.</p>

<p><strong>Advanced heat management</strong></p>

<p>The key to achieving outstanding fuel consumption without compromising performance, is to apply a higher compression. But generally, as the compression increases, so does the risk of uncontrolled combustion, also known as knocking.</p>

<p>The 1.2T&rsquo;s high compression ratio of 10:1 was made possible thanks to the adoption of a series of key technologies that improve control over the combustion process. That way, the risk of knocking could be avoided.</p>

<p>First of all, the intake ports have been designed to generate a more intense flow and a &lsquo;vertical vortex&rsquo;, and also the shape of the piston has been optimized to improve in-cylinder turbulence. As a result, fuel and intake air mix faster, and a more homogeneous mixture is formed. This leads to a higher combustion speed &ndash; which helps prevent knocking.</p>

<p>Advanced heat-management is in itself a great way to improve fuel economy, but it is also another way of reducing the risk of knocking. The engine was designed in such a way, that the temperature of each individual part can be optimized. For example, the bottom of the pistons is cooled by oil-jets and the cooling of the cylinder head is separated from that of the engine block. This allows to reduce the temperature in the combustion chamber, whilst keeping the block itself hot enough to reduce friction.</p>

<p>Direct injection contributes as well, as it helps to dissipate the heat in the combustion chamber. And the charge air passes through the intercooler, which uses an independent low temperature cooling circuit.</p>

<p><strong>Low-end torque and quick response</strong></p>

<p>A low-inertia turbocharger, the VVT-iW valve system and the D-4T direct injection system work hand in hand to ensure excellent torque delivery from the lowest engine speeds. Together with the limited volume intake system, this ensures an immediate response to the accelerator pedal.</p>

<p>The injection system has been newly developed for the 1.2T engine. Compact in design, it is perfect for utilisation in a small displacement engine. It allows multiple injections per cycle, and the optimized width and reduced length of the fuel spray ensure the quality of the combustion, regardless of the engine regime and load.</p>

<p><strong>From Otto to Atkinson</strong></p>

<p>The VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing - intelligent) system operates on both the intake and the exhaust side, and allows maximizing torque at all engine speeds. In addition, the new VVT-iW (Variable Valve Timing - intelligent Wide) allows for the intake valve closing to be delayed, which means that the engine can operate in both the Otto and the Atkinson cycle. The latter is used in extremely low load conditions, when the intake valve remains open for a fraction of time, after the compression stroke has set in, allowing part of the gas charge to be pushed back into the intake. As a result, the effective compression stroke is shortened. Pumping losses are reduced, since the pressure on the piston is lower, and also the throttle valve can be opened wider.</p>

<p><strong>Quick and smooth Stop & Start</strong></p>

<p>A new start control was developed to ensure a quick and smooth engine restart. When the system shuts down the engine, it controls the stop position to leave the piston half way in the compression stroke. Then, upon restart, it applies stratified injection in the first compressed cylinder to counter vibrations. And by retarding the ignition, torque increase is kept in check, preventing the engine from revving excessively, hence ensuring a confident and tranquil take-off.</p>

<p><strong>Like a heel/toe master:</strong></p>

<p>For the first time in the Toyota range a new system called &ldquo;Intelligent Manual Transmission&rdquo; is fitted to the Toyota C-HR 1.2T. Just like a heel/toe master, the system automatically increases the engine revs when downshifting ensuring a smooth gear shift. The system also works when shifting up in order to improve comfort for driver and passengers by reducing clutch shock. A smooth start is also ensured and the risk of stalling is almost null &ndash; particularly good news for all the learner-drivers out there.</p>

<p><strong>DYNAMICS THAT BELIE A CROSSOVER</strong></p>

<p>The design and development of the Toyota C-HR chassis has received the full attention of the Chief Engineer Hiroyuki Koba, himself a keen driver.</p>

<p><strong>From the very</strong> outset of the project, Hiroyuki Koba travelled thousands of kilometres along European roads in order to understand not only the requirements of the road network, but also the way that Europeans drive.</p>

<p>&ldquo;I have noticed, for example, that Europeans have a much more fluid driving style, based on a more acute observation of traffic&rdquo; observes Hiroyuki Koba. &ldquo;They avoid obstacles simply by adapting their trajectory and speed and will focus to carry on speed aiming for efficient progress, while elsewhere in the world the preferred approach is very often to stop. This has prompted us to work with our European team on driving precision in all aspects of the vehicle. We wanted to achieve performance on a par with a good C-segment hatchback.&rdquo;</p>

<p>With its low centre of gravity and double-wishbone rear suspension, the new TNGA-based platform has formed an ideal starting point from which to ensure that all of the features of the chassis could be designed to obtain an immediate and natural response to the driver&rsquo;s actions. Chief Engineer Hiroyuki Koba has been engaged in each key dynamic assessment and decision, assuring that his vision &ldquo;Response, Linearity and Consistency&rdquo; fully came to life.</p>

<p>In particular, steering has been designed to be perfectly linear which, together with the optimum limitation of rolling motion, gives the Toyota C-HR remarkable driving precision for a crossover. Limiting body movement, which generally affects tall cars in particular, also has a direct influence on comfort. Even on European often battered roads, the car remains remarkably composed and accurate, adding to the confidence and joy of driving.</p>

<p><strong>Response, Linearity and Consistency</strong></p>

<p>During the entire development phase, Chief Engineer Hiroyuki Koba has stayed true to his vision of &lsquo;Response, Linearity and Consistency&rsquo;. &lsquo;Response&rsquo; refers to the fact that the car needs to react immediately to any driver input. &lsquo;Linearity&rsquo; means that the vehicle response must build up gradually, and precisely in line with the amount of driver input. And &lsquo;Consistency&rsquo; relates to how the car reacts in the same predictable way, no matter what the speed or circumstances are. It is Koba&rsquo;s belief that by ensuring these three elements, the car can inspire true confidence, making every drive more fun.</p>

<p>The new and rigid GA-C platform on which the Toyota C-HR is built, provided an excellent starting point. To ensure precision, a MacPherson Strut suspension was designed specifically for the Toyota C-HR. It includes a strut bearing rotation axis that has been defined to reduce steering friction drastically, allowing smooth and accurate steering. To ensure a hatchback-like roll-rigidity, the large-diameter stabilizer is directly linked to the strut via a stabilizer link.</p>

<p>At the back, a double wishbone suspension contributes significantly to the crisp driving experience. It lends most of its hardware from the latest generation Prius, the first car to be built on the GA-C platform. However, for the Toyota C-HR, it has been modified to meet Koba&rsquo;s demands in terms of controllability, stability and ride comfort. Thanks to the use of a specific sub frame, the suspension angles could be optimized &ndash; an element that was instrumental to give this C Crossover its hatchback-like handling in spite of its increased height. Different from Prius, the C-HR uses a ball-joint for the connection of the lower arm n&deg;2. This provides a high level of twist rigidity, and enables compliance steer through the side forces that act on the rear wheels. The shock absorber is angled forward, reducing road load and improving luggage space.</p>

<p><strong>All Wheel Drive (AWD) system</strong></p>

<p>The Toyota C-HR 1.2T with CVT transmission can be equipped with the Dynamic Torque Control AWD System. The front and rear drive force distribution is precisely controlled via an electro-magnetic coupling. Depending of the circumstances the front-rear drive force distribution can vary from 100-0% to 50-50%. The system includes Cornering Control, a specific logic allowing the driver to track the intended driving line by adjusting the drive force depending on driving conditions. With Pre-torque Control, front-rear drive-torque distribution is adjusted to 90-10% as from the moment the driver operates the steering wheel. This ensures good response to changes in the steering angle when cornering. Thanks to the Yaw-rate feedback control, understeer and oversteer are corrected by optimal control of the front and rear drive-force, distributed every 6 milliseconds.</p>

<p><strong>TOYOTA NEW GLOBAL ARCHITECTURE</strong></p>

<p>The Toyota C-HR reaps the benefits of being constructed on a new Toyota New Global Architecture-based platform (TNGA).</p>

<p><strong>The Toyota C-HR</strong> follows the new, fourth generation Prius as the second production model to use the GA-C platform, strategically adapted to suit the particular requirements of a stylish and dynamically rewarding C-segment crossover.</p>

<p>It demonstrates how Toyota&rsquo;s development of TNGA has ensured its new platforms are not rigidly standardized, but have a built-in flexibility that allows them to be engineered with ease to suit multiple vehicle types, from hatchbacks to SUVs.</p>

<p>The C-HR&rsquo;s use of a TNGA-based platform has proved central in supporting Chief Engineer Hiroyuki Koba&rsquo;s determination &ldquo;not to compromise design or driving performance,&rdquo; contributing to the crossover&rsquo;s fun-to-drive quality, its individual styling and its fundamental safety performance.</p>

<p><strong>Low centre of gravity</strong></p>

<p>In terms of vehicle dynamics, the basic design of the GA-C platform allows for a low centre of gravity to be achieved &ndash; in the case of the C-HR, the lowest in its class, in fact. The benefit of this is realized in a more engaging drive and balanced handling, with much reduced body roll.</p>

<p>A low-set driving position is another direct benefit of TNGA, but with the C-HR the designers have raised the driver&rsquo;s hip point slightly compared to the new Prius, in line with the higher, commanding position at the wheel that crossover customers favour.</p>

<p>The adaptability of the GA-C platform is also witnessed in the C-HR&rsquo;s shorter wheelbase compared to Prius (2,640 vs 2,700 mm) and wider front and rear treads (+20 mm front, +10 mm rear). These changes reflect both the different packaging and handling requirements for the crossover.</p>

<p><strong>Rationalized engine compartment</strong></p>

<p>TNGA allows for the arrangement of the engine compartment to be rethought, with components relocated and set lower down in the space to support the vehicle&rsquo;s lower centre of gravity. In the C-HR it has enabled the engine to be angled slightly rearward, helping the designers secure a lower hood line as well as contributing to the lower centre of gravity.</p>

<p>Although the new Prius is exclusively powered by a full hybrid system, the C-HR offers both full hybrid and petrol powertrains, the latter with the option of both front and all-wheel drive. The GA-C platform is able to accommodate each of these powertrains without compromising the vehicle&rsquo;s packaging, styling or chassis balance.</p>

<p><strong>High-rigidity for rewarding dynamics and ride comfort</strong></p>

<p>The GA-C platform combines with the C-HR&rsquo;s highly rigid body to provide excellent responsiveness that is consistent and linear to the driver&rsquo;s inputs. The essential quality of the dynamic handling removes the need for the suspension to be firmed up to achieve the desired level of performance, thus avoiding any compromise in ride comfort.</p>

<p><strong>Design freedom with reduced vehicle height</strong></p>

<p>As well as the lower hood line made possible by the repositioning of the engine within the engine bay, the GA-C platform also enables a lower overall vehicle height to be achieved, This has been of particular value to the C-HR design team in producing the striking, coupe-like upper body that helps set the Toyota apart from its C-segment crossover rivals. At the same time, the low roofline does not call for compromise in headroom for front or rear seat passengers, thanks to the lower seating positions made possible by the new platform.</p>

<p><strong>Safety performance</strong></p>

<p>Superior safety performance is inherent in TNGA, with priority given to achieving the highest standards of active and passive safety. The Toyota C-HR became the eighth model currently produced in Europe and enters the C-segment with a fresh new take on the crossover.The new model is the third hybrid car produced in Europe, together with the Yaris Hybrid in France and the Auris and Auris Touring Sports hybrids in the UK.</p><p>&ldquo;The Toyota C-HR is a hugely important product for the whole of Toyota, not just for TMMT. The crossover segment is growing fast. This car is Toyota&rsquo;s very strong entry to this segment,&rdquo; said Dr Van Zyl, Toyota Motor Europe (TME) President and CEO, during the line-off ceremony at TMMT.</p><p>TMMT will add the Toyota C-HR to its current production of the Corolla and the Verso, on the same line.It is the first hybrid-powered vehicle to be produced in Turkey. &ldquo;Hybrid defines Toyota. Since the first Priusin 1997 we have steadily convinced more and more customers around the world that hybrid vehicles are one of the best solutions to today&rsquo;s environmental issues. We have sold more than 9.5 million hybrids globally,&rdquo; said Moritaka Yoshida, President of the Mid-size Vehicle Company within Toyota Motor Corporation,who was on hand at the line-off ceremony at TMMT today.</p><p>The Toyota C-HR is the first Toyota car outside Japan to be manufactured based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA). &ldquo;TNGA is our new philosophy of vehicle creation and part of our initiatives for building ever-better cars. Toyota will gradually expand the production of vehicles based on TNGA,&rdquo; added Moritaka Yoshida<strong>.</strong></p><p>With the Toyota C-HR the total production capacity for TMMT will increase from 150 to 280 thousand vehicles per year. TMMT has hired an additional 2000 new members in the months leading up to the startof production. The total number of employees is now around 5000. Production has been organised in three shifts. The additional plant investment at TMMT is around 350 million euros, taking the cumulative investment in the plant to 1.7 billion euros since it started operations in 1994.</p><p><strong>Export expansion</strong></p><p>TMMT, which already exports around 80% of its production to Europe, will gradually expand its export destinations <span><span><span><span>to countries and regions such as</span></span></span></span> the USA, Canada, Taiwan, Mauritius and South Africa.</p><p>&ldquo;It is a great privilege for us to export to North America, because it is Toyota&rsquo;s biggest market and our customers there expect a lot from Toyota in terms of quality, customer satisfaction, and connection to the brand,&rdquo; said Dr van Zyl. &ldquo;TMMT has been one of our best plants globally for many years when it comes to build quality, and I am very confident our members there will exceed our North American customers&rsquo; expectations,&rdquo; he added.</p><p><strong>European collaboration and increased local production</strong></p><p>The Toyota C-HR is also the fruit of the collaboration of several European production sites of Toyota&nbsp;and of suppliers based in Europe.</p><p>The newest 1.8 hybrid powertrain for the crossover is being produced at Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK (TMUK)&rsquo;s engine plant in Deeside, North Wales. An additional 7.1 million GBP was invested in the facility and new equipment.</p><p>The third of Toyota&rsquo;s European manufacturing site engaged in Toyota C-HR production is Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland (TMMP) located in Walbrzych, Poland. The plant will supply manual transmissionsfor the 1.2 litre turbo engine model. In addition TMMP will start production of the hybrid transaxle in 2018, which is currently being made in Japan.</p><p>European suppliers make up the bulk of the individual parts sourced to make the Toyota C-HR. <p><strong>A New Design Direction for the Crossover Segment</strong></p>

<p>The all-new Toyota C-HR introduces a distinctive styling that brings newfound dynamism and sensuality to the crossover market, combining a coupe-like upper body with the powerful underpinnings of an SUV.</p>

<p>4,360 mm long, 1,795 mm wide, 1,555 mm high (Hybrid) and with a 2,640 mm wheelbase, the production vehicle remains remarkably true to the concept car&rsquo;s exterior which was first shown at the Paris Motorshow in 2014, and which registered extremely well with target customers.Under the concept of &ldquo;Sensual Speed-Cross&rdquo;, and featuring a diamond architectural theme with wheel arches projecting prominently at all four corners to emphasise the new crossover&rsquo;s strength and rigidity, the C-HR modulated structure combines a powerful lower body and raised ground clearance with the slim and sleek cabin profile of a coupe.</p>

<p>Viewed from any angle, the C-HR&rsquo;s combination of facetted gemstone-like shapes with fluid surfaces and elegantly integrated detailing create a delicate balance of precision and sensuality.The front represents a further development of Toyota&rsquo;s Under Priority and Keen Look design identity. The slender upper grille flows from the Toyota badge into the sleek, aggressive wing extremities of the headlamp clusters and wraps fully around the front corners of the vehicle.The movement of the blacked out rocker panel towards the front and rear wheels, along with the shoulder axis that runs through to the front and rear, emphasise the fast-looking, &lsquo;lift-up&rsquo; feel of the thin body.</p>

<p>The C-HR&rsquo;s coupe-like styling is further enhanced by disguised rear door handles integrated within the C pillar and, essential to the representation of speed within the design, the powerful projection of the sweeping roofline into a large, highly aerodynamic, skeletal frame rear spoiler.To the rear, the strongly tapered cabin integrates a top-hinged tailgate giving access to the loadspace that can accommodate luggage for 5 people. This contrasts with the pronounced flaring of the wheel arches, which give the new crossover a wide and extremely powerful stance.Standing proud of the tapering body work, prominent rear light clusters may also be equipped with LED lamp technology to give the rear view of the C-HR an equally expressive visual signature.</p>

<p><strong>Sophisticated Interior Design with Outstanding Sensory Quality</strong></p>

<p>A new departure for Toyota, the interior styling represents a new &lsquo;Sensual Tech&rsquo; design concept combining high-tech functionality with a sensual and fashionable style. It embodies a driver focused area within an airy, expansive cabin space.</p>

<p>The warm, welcoming ambiance of an airy, expansive cabin space was created by the seamless layered architecture of the instrument panel that continues through to the door trim with a stylish ornamentation and a piano black panel. It offers a contrast between sensual surfacing and crisp lines to deliver a fresh, yet comfortable environment.</p>

<p>The driver oriented area incorporates innovative details and intuitive, approachable high technology. All operating switchgear, and an 8&rdquo; display audio touch-screen featuring a redesigned and improved HMI (Human Machine Interface) with Toyota&rsquo;s Multi-Media &rsquo;16 navigation platform and enhanced connected services are slightly oriented towards the driver.</p>

<p>In conjunction with the asymmetrical centre console design, this brings all controls within easy reach of the driver, whilst still allowing front passenger access to the relevant switchgear.Because the touch-screen stands proud of the instrument panel rather than being enclosed by it, the upper dashboard is considerably lower in depth, further helping driver visibility.A unique new two-tiered front seat design combines a slender, sporting upper section with a more strongly bolstered and supportive lower area, these differences emphasised through the use of differing tones, textures and patterns within the upholstery.</p>

<p>Targeting class-leading sensory quality (SQ), and knowing that C-HR customers will also have competitors from premium brands on their shopping list, the C-HR interior represents the earliest involvement yet of Toyota&rsquo;s European SQ team in the design process.</p>

<p>Working closely with the headquarters design team to maintain the original interior styling concept, the SQ team have focused painstakingly on component quality, and the consistency of grain, texture, shape, colour and illumination in every element, even the stitch groove radii of the seats.Reinforcing the link between interior and exterior design, many switches use a similar shape, reflecting the diamond motif of the exterior body shell. The same diamond theme is also visible in the door trim pattern, the headliner, the JBL speaker grilles and tweeter shape, and even the needles of the driver&rsquo;s analogue instrument dials.</p>

<p>A carefully considered choice of finishes is essential to the harmonious, consistent, one-piece look of the new interior. There are three main surface finishes &ndash; leather-like for all background surfaces, a smooth Nappa grain for all touching surfaces and technical grain for all functional elements such as switchgear.</p>

<p>Decorative elements are finished in high quality piano black and satin silver trim, and the clear blue instrument and switchgear illumination has been carefully fine-tuned to ensure consistency of hue, even on adjacent reflective surfaces of differing colours.</p>

<p>This outstanding new interior design is available in a choice of three colour schemes: Dark Grey, Black/Blue and Black/Brown.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Equipment Levels to Suit the Most Demanding Customers</strong></p>

<p>Reflecting the demands of its target customer, the Toyota C-HR can be equipped with a wide variety of features.</p>

<p>As part of Toyota&rsquo;s commitment to democratise advanced safety equipment, Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the range. The system includes a Pre-Collision System (including Pedestrian Recognition), Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with steering control, Automatic High Beam and Road Sign Assist<sup>1</sup>.</p>

<p>Top-of-the-range customers will be able to specify heated seats, a smart entry system, privacy glass, bespoke upholstery including part-leather seats, Toyota&rsquo;s revolutionary S-IPA system (Simple Intelligent Park Assist), 18&rdquo; alloy wheels and Bi-tone metallic paintwork.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>State of the Art Powertrains</strong></p>

<p>The Toyota C-HR is equipped with an engine-range that is designed to deliver exactly the fluent, engaging driving behaviour that its customers are looking for. This is most powerfully expressed by the segment-unique, range-topping, full hybrid version, the intrinsic characteristics of which guarantee a smooth, jolt-free ride.</p>

<p>Fitted with the latest-generation hybrid power plant, the C-HR generates CO<sub><sup>2</sup></sub> emissions as low as 82 g/km &ndash; a figure unrivalled within its segment &ndash; and returns combined fuel consumption of only 3.5 l/100 km.</p>

<p>Delivering 90 kW/122 DIN hp, this new hybrid powertrain is not only more efficient and lighter than the previous system, but also offers sharper performance. Detailed design changes to the engine have resulted in a thermal efficiency of 40% &ndash; a world-beating performance for a petrol unit.</p>

<p>Other hybrid system components have been made lighter and smaller, and have been repositioned for optimum packaging, further contributing to the car&rsquo;s low centre of gravity.This new hybrid powertrain offers the response and the fluidity of a dynamic driving style that particularly suits the C-HR&rsquo;s dynamic design philosophy.</p>

<p>The C-HR is also available with a new 1.2 litre turbo engine, which debuted in the Auris. Delivering 85 kW/116 DIN hp and 185 Nm of torque, this unit generates CO<sub>2</sub> emission from 125g/km and returns combined fuel consumption from 5.4 l/100 km. It may be mated to either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a Continuously Variable Transmission. CVT equipped versions are available with either front- or all-wheel drive.</p>

<p>And finally, a 2-litre 144 DIN hp/107 kW, 188 Nm CVT-only model will be available for certain markets (Ukraine and Caucasus).</p>

<p>&ldquo;I have noticed, for example, that Europeans have a much more fluid driving style, based on a more acute observation of traffic&rdquo; observes Hiroyuki Koba. &ldquo;They avoid obstacles simply by adapting their trajectory and speed and will focus to carry on speed aiming for efficient progress, while elsewhere in the world the preferred approach is very often to stop. This has prompted us to work with our European team on driving precision in all aspects of the vehicle. We wanted to achieve performance on a par with a good C-segment hatchback.</p>

<p>&rdquo;With its low centre of gravity and multi-link rear suspension, the new TNGA-based platform has formed an ideal starting point from which to ensure that all of the features of the chassis could be designed to obtain an immediate and natural response to the driver&rsquo;s actions. Chief Engineer Hiroyuki Koba has been engaged in each key dynamic assessment and decision, assuring that his vision &ldquo;Response, Linearity and Consistency&rdquo; fully came to life.</p>

<p>In particular, steering has been designed to be perfectly linear which, together with the optimum limitation of rolling motion, gives the Toyota C-HR remarkable driving precision for a crossover. Limiting body movement, which generally affects tall cars in particular, also has a direct influence on comfort. Even on European often battered roads, the car remains remarkably composed and accurate, adding to the confidence and joy of driving.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Concert Hall Sound</strong>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Providing the ultimate in sound reproduction in the C crossover segment, the new C-HR may be equipped with a tailor-made JBL premium audio system comprising an 8-channel, 576 Watt stereo amplifier and 9-speakers, including two newly patented acoustic JBL wave guides, known as horn tweeters.</p>

<p>Because various elements of the interior such as the windows, sunroof and upholstery, as well as the rigidity of the body structure surrounding each speaker, can have a significant impact on system sound quality, the system is the result of particularly close collaboration between JBL and Toyota&rsquo;s engineers from early in the design process.</p>

<p>An in-depth customer analysis was taken into account for the system design and resulted in the front cabin orientation of the speaker layout and the use of a precisely integrated, A pillar-mounted horn tweeter -a JBL system signature- to deliver crisp, clear sound.</p>

<p>As well the two 25 mm horn tweeters and acoustic wave guides, the system further features two 80 mm wide-dispersion units and two 17 cm sub-woofers in the front of the C-HR, and, in the rear, two 15 cm full-range speakers and a 19 cm sub-woofer in a dedicated, 10-litre, ported enclosure.Available in combination with the navigation option, the JBL premium audio system also incorporates lossless audio encoding.</p>

<p>The partnership between Toyota and JBL started in 1996 and has been successfully expanded since that time. Trusted by music professionals, JBL audio systems are used in major concert halls, venues and stadiums throughout the world (80% of live concerts, 70% of all recording studios and 90% of all THX-certified movie theatres).</p>

Style and quality are essential considerations in any purchase they make, and the car is an extension of their personality.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Inspired by what he learned from meeting with these customers, C-HR Chief Engineer Hiroyuki Koba focused persistently on their requirements throughout the development process, setting high demands for design and perceived quality.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Toyota C-HR&rsquo;s unique character demonstrates the flexibility that the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) gives to vehicle developers in the three key areas of design, powertrain and dynamics, enabling them to deliver a new and fresh take on the increasingly commoditized crossover segment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Pre-sales will begin throughout Europe in September, with the first deliveries to customers before the end of the year. Positioned between the Auris TS and the RAV4, C-HR targets upwards of 100,000 annual European sales.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>A New Design Direction for the Crossover Segment</strong></p>

<p><em>'Crossover users want something special, something that a traditional SUV cannot offer. They want a high driving position, but they don&rsquo;t want the boxy shape of an off-roader. And they also want an agile driving feel.&nbsp;With the C-HR, we are trying to introduce a new value into the C crossover market, and that newness comes from SUV robustness and strength. But we're not trying to make an SUV that's dynamic, rather, a dynamic vehicle with SUV-like properties.'Kazuhiko Isawa, Chief Designer C-HR&nbsp;</em></p>

<p>The all-new Toyota C-HR introduces a distinctive styling that brings newfound dynamism and sensuality to the crossover market.&nbsp;4360mm long, 1795mm wide, 1555mm high (Hybrid) and with a 2640mm wheelbase, the production vehicle remains remarkably true to the concept car&rsquo;s exterior which was first shown at the Paris Motorshow in 2014, and which registered extremely well with target customers.&nbsp;Under the concept of &ldquo;Sensual Speed-Cross&rdquo;, and featuring a diamond architectural theme with wheel arches projecting prominently at all four corners to emphasise the new crossover&rsquo;s strength and rigidity, the C-HR modulated structure combines a powerful lower body and raised ground clearance with the slim and sleek cabin profile of a coupe.&nbsp;Viewed from any angle, the C-HR's combination of facetted gemstone-like shapes with fluid surfaces and elegantly integrated detailing create a delicate balance of precision and sensuality.&nbsp;The front represents a further development of Toyota&rsquo;s Under Priority and Keen Look design identity. The slender upper grille flows from the Toyota badge into the sleek, aggressive wing extremities of the headlamp clusters and wraps fully around the front corners of the vehicle.&nbsp;The movement of the blacked out rocker panel towards the front and rear wheels, along with the shoulder axis that runs through to the front and rear, emphasise the fast-looking, 'lift-up' feel of the thin body.&nbsp;The C-HR's coupe-like styling is further enhanced by disguised rear door handles integrated within the C pillar and, essential to the representation of speed within the design, the powerful projection of the sweeping roofline into a large, highly aerodynamic, skeletal frame rear spoiler.&nbsp;To the rear, the strongly tapered cabin integrates a top-hinged tailgate giving access to the loadspace. This contrasts with the pronounced flaring of the wheel arches, which give the new crossover a wide and extremely powerful stance.&nbsp;Standing proud of the tapering body work, prominent rear light clusters may also be equipped with LED lamp technology to give the rear view of the C-HR an equally expressive visual signature.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Sophisticated Interior Design with Outstanding Sensory Quality</strong></p>

<p><em>'Our aim as Toyota's European design centre was to deliver a unique style &ndash; modern and sensual at the same time. The uniqueness of the C-HR's interior design is based on a stable structure with 'Emotional Surfaces' and 'Innovative Details'.&nbsp;These key features provided us with the opportunity to approach the design with a fresh perspective. As a result, the C-HR showcases the emotional appeal of Toyota's interiors of the future.'Alexandre Gommier, ED2 Design Centre&nbsp;</em></p>

<p>A new departure for Toyota, the interior styling represents a new 'Sensual Tech' design concept combining high-tech functionality with a sensual and fashionable style. It embodies a driver focused area within an airy, expansive cabin space.&nbsp;The warm, welcoming ambiance of an airy, expansive cabin space was created by the seamless layered architecture of the instrument panel that continues through to the door trim with a stylish ornamentation and a piano black panel. It offers a contrast between sensual surfacing and crisp lines to deliver a fresh, yet comfortable environment.&nbsp;The driver oriented area incorporates innovative details and intuitive, approachable high technology. All operating switchgear, and an 8" display audio touch-screen featuring a redesigned and improved HMI (Human Machine Interface) with Toyota&rsquo;s Multi-Media &rsquo;16 navigation platform and enhanced connected services are slightly oriented towards the driver.&nbsp;In conjunction with the asymmetrical centre console design, this brings all controls within easy reach of the driver, whilst still allowing front passenger access to the relevant switchgear.&nbsp;Because the touch-screen stands proud of the instrument panel rather than being enclosed by it, the upper dashboard is considerably lower in depth, further helping driver visibility.&nbsp;A unique new two-tiered front seat design combines a slender, sporting upper section with a more strongly bolstered and supportive lower area, these differences emphasised through the use of differing tones, textures and patterns within the upholstery.&nbsp;</p>

<p><em>'The European Sensory Quality team has already worked on various facelifts of existing models, but this is the first time that we were tasked with an entirely new model, so a lot depends on the success of theC-HR. The designers at ED2 did such a good job, we had to ensure that their concept made it to production with the right finishing.&nbsp;With great support from the engineering teams, we worked on every visual detail and challenged standards to create seamless interior harmony. In the end, we believe this to be the best interior SQ yet seen in a Toyota.'Mehmet Fatih Kale, Senior Engineer, European SQ team&nbsp;</em></p>

<p>Targeting class-leading sensory quality (SQ), and knowing that C-HR customers will also have competitors from premium brands on their shopping list, the C-HR interior represents the earliest involvement yet of Toyota's European SQ team in the design process.&nbsp;Working closely with the headquarters design team to maintain the original interior styling concept, the SQ team have focused painstakingly on component quality, and the consistency of grain, texture, shape, colour and illumination in every element, even the stitch groove radii of the seats.&nbsp;Reinforcing the link between interior and exterior design, many switches use a similar shape, reflecting the diamond motif of the exterior body shell. The same diamond theme is also visible in the door trim pattern, the headliner, the JBL speaker grilles and tweeter shape, and even the needles of the driver's analogue instrument dials.&nbsp;A carefully considered choice of finishes is essential to the harmonious, consistent, one-piece look of the new interior. There are three main surface finishes &ndash; leather-like for all background surfaces, a smooth Nappa grain for all touching surfaces and technical grain for all functional elements such as switchgear.&nbsp;Decorative elements are finished in high quality piano black and satin silver trim, and the clear blue instrument and switchgear illumination has been carefully fine-tuned to ensure consistency of hue, even on adjacent reflective surfaces of differing colours.&nbsp;This outstanding new interior design will be available in a choice of three colour schemes: Dark Grey, Black/Blue and Black/Brown.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Equipment Levels to Suit the Most Demanding Customers</strong></p>

<p>Reflecting the demands of its target customer, the Toyota C-HR can be equipped with a wide variety of features.&nbsp;As part of Toyota&rsquo;s commitment to democratise advanced safety equipment, Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the range. The system includes a Pre-Collision System (including Pedestrian Recognition), Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with steering control, Automatic High Beam and Road Sign Assist (Road Sign Assist is not available on the entry grade).&nbsp;Top-of-the-range customers will be able to specify heated seats, a smart entry system, privacy glass, bespoke upholstery including part-leather seats, Toyota&rsquo;s revolutionary S-IPA system (Simple Intelligent Park Assist), 18&rdquo; alloy wheels and Bi-tone metallic paintwork.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>State of the Art Powertrains</strong></p>

<p>The Toyota C-HR is equipped with an engine-range that is designed to deliver exactly the fluent, engaging driving behaviour that its customers are looking for. This is most powerfully expressed by the segment-unique, range-topping, full hybrid version, the intrinsic characteristics of which guarantee a smooth, jolt-free ride.&nbsp;Fitted with the latest-generation hybrid power plant, the C-HR generates CO2 emissions as low as 85 g/km &ndash; a figure unrivalled within its segment &ndash; and returns combined fuel consumption of only 3.7 l/100 km.&nbsp;Delivering 90 kW/122 DIN hp, this new hybrid powertrain is not only more efficient and lighter than the previous system, but also offers sharper performance. Detailed design changes to the engine have resulted in a thermal efficiency of 40% &ndash; a world-beating performance for a petrol unit.&nbsp;Other hybrid system components have been made lighter and smaller, and have been repositioned for optimum packaging, further contributing to the car&rsquo;s low centre of gravity.&nbsp;The C-HR is also available with a new 1.2 litre turbo engine, which debuted in the Auris. Delivering 85 kW/116 DIN hp and 185 Nm of torque, this unit generates CO2 emission from 128 g/km and returns combined fuel consumption of from 5.7 l/100 km. It may be mated to either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a Continuously Variable Transmission. CVT equipped versions are available with either front- or all-wheel drive.&nbsp;And finally, a 2-litre 150 DIN hp/110 kW, 193 Nm CVT-only model will be available for certain markets (Ukraine and Caucasus).</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[2016 c-hr]]></category>

<p>The lamp clusters incorporate full LED lighting with light guides and sequential turn signals, giving the C-HR its own unique visual signature.</p>

<p>Below, the enhanced three-dimensionality of the bumper that&rsquo;s integrated with the wheel flairs and the trapezoidal lower grille architecture reinforce the C-HR&rsquo;s wide, firmly planted stance.</p>

<p>This car is the result of a global cooperation between our design centers on 3 continents and was managed by PCD (Project Chief Designer) Kazuhiko Isawa at headquarters. The original exterior design was created by Calty, our design studio in California.</p>

<p><strong>Responsive and Frugal Powertrains</strong></p>

<p>The Toyota C-HR will be equipped with an engine-range that is designed to deliver exactly the fluent driving behaviour that its customers are looking for. This finds its full expression at the wheel of the hybrid version, the intrinsic characteristics of which guarantee a smooth, jolt-free ride. Fitted with the latest-generation hybrid power plant, the C-HR has CO<sub>2</sub> emissions of less than 90 g/km, unrivalled within its segment.</p>

<p>Delivering 122 DIN hp, this new hybrid powertrain is more efficient and lighter, and offers sharper performance than the previous system. Detailed design changes to the engine have resulted in a thermal efficiency of 40% &ndash; a world-beating performance for a petrol unit. Other hybrid system components have been made lighter and smaller, and have been repositioned for optimum packaging, further contributing to the car&rsquo;s lower centre of gravity.</p>

<p>Alternatively, the Toyota C-HR is available with the new 115 DIN hp/85 kW 1.2 litre turbo engine, which debuted in the Auris. It comes with the choice of a 6-speed manual gearbox or a Continuously Variable automatic Transmission system, which is developed to meet expectations in response & direct feel for European people familiar with manual and automatic gearboxes. The CVT is available in front-wheel or 4-wheel drive versions.</p>

<p>And finally, a 2-litre CVT-only model will be available for certain markets.</p>

<p><strong>Dynamics that Belie a Crossover</strong></p>

<p>The design and development of the Toyota C-HR chassis has received the full attention of the Chief Engineer Hiroyuki Koba, himself a keen driver. From the very outset of the project, he travelled thousands of kilometres along European roads in order to understand not only the requirements of the road network, but also the way that Europeans drive.</p>

<p>&ldquo;I have noticed, for example, that Europeans have a much more fluid driving style, based on a more acute observation of traffic&rdquo; observes Hiroyuki Koba. &ldquo;They avoid obstacles simply by adapting their trajectory and speed and will focus to carry on speed aiming for efficient progress, while elsewhere in the world the preferred approach is very often to stop. This has prompted us to work with our European team on driving precision in all aspects of the vehicle. We wanted to achieve performance on a par with a good C-segment hatchback.&rdquo;</p>

<p>With its low centre of gravity and multi-link rear suspension, the new TNGA-based platform has formed an ideal starting point from which to ensure that all of the features of the chassis could be designed to obtain an immediate and natural response to the driver&rsquo;s actions. Chief Engineer Hiroyuki Koba has been engaged in each key dynamic assessment and decision, assuring that his vision &ldquo;Response, Linearity and Consistency&rdquo; fully came to life.</p>

<p>In particular, steering has been designed to be perfectly linear which, together with the optimum limitation of rolling motion, gives the Toyota C-HR remarkable driving precision for a crossover. Limiting body movement, which generally affects tall cars in particular, also has a direct influence on comfort. Even on European often battered roads, the car remains remarkably composed and accurate, adding to the confidence and joy of driving.</p>

<p><strong>Advanced Safety Equipment as Standard</strong></p>

<p>In line with Toyota&rsquo;s strategy to democratise advanced safety equipment, the C-HR will be equipped with technology usually reserved for higher segments. The Toyota Safety Sense system that will be offered as standard on C-HR includes a Pre-Collision system, Lane Departure Alert, Road Sign Assist and Automatic Highbeam, as well as Pedestrian Detection and Adaptive Cruise Control.</p>

<p><strong>Production</strong></p>

<p>The Toyota C-HR will be built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey (TMMT) in Sakarya, Turkey. This marks the first time a hybrid-powered vehicle has been produced in the country, and falls within the scope of Toyota Motor Europe&rsquo;s Greater Europe manufacturing and sales operations.&nbsp;This will be TME&rsquo;s third hybrid vehicle production plant in Europe, together with Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (Yaris Hybrid) and Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK in Burnaston, Derbyshire (Auris Hybrid and Auris HybridTouring Sport). <p>And welcome to Toyota.</p>

<p>Today, we are 61 days into the new year. A good time to briefly look back at 2015.</p>

<p>In spite of challenging circumstances, we achieved our targets.</p>

<p>In the East, we maintained our market share of 7.7%, in a very unstable environment. So Russia remains one of our highest volume markets, in spite of the depreciation of the Rouble,</p>

<p>while Lexus set an all time record there in 2015.</p>

<p>In the West, we increased sales by 9.5%.</p>

<p>And we did so in a profitable way. In fact, in the first nine months of our fiscal year, the operating profit was around 380 milion Euro, despite the though situation in the Eastern markets</p>

<p>We achieved these results, because we dare to be different:</p>

<ul>
<li>Different because we do not chase volume at any cost,</li>
<li>Different because of our absolute focus on customer satisfaction,</li>
<li>And different because of our total commitment to Hybrid.</li>
</ul>

<p>We were also pleased to confirm the growing importance of our locally produced models. In 2015,</p>

<p>70 % of Toyotas sold in Europe, were produced in Europe, a 6 percentage point increase.</p>

<p>And as I just mentioned, Hybrid is at the core of our strategy. We sold nearly 210.000 hybrids last year, 20% more than in 2014. Here in Western Europe, hybrids now represent 1/3 of our sales.</p>

<p>The fact that hybrid gains popularity in spite of falling fuel prices, shows that customers prefer them not only for their fuel economy. They appreciate the low cost of ownership, and the benefits of an electric drivetrain, without range anxiety. But overall, it&rsquo;s the &lsquo;feel good&rsquo; factor that makes hybrid drivers feel just a little bit special.</p>

<p>With this in mind, let&rsquo;s now focus on 2016 and beyond.</p>

<p>We will continue to strive for &lsquo;Better&rsquo;: Better Cars, better Quality and better Service. Because ultimately, that is, what determines the customers&rsquo; smiles.</p>

<p>We also anticipate the future needs of society, by developing better mobility solutions such as the i-ROAD project in Grenoble (France) or the revolutionary Mirai fuel cell car.</p>

<p>It has the potential to trigger a societal transformation, and we Toyota are ready to play an important role in a movement that has the potential to change the world&hellip;</p>

<p>Because Mirai offers no-compromise driving: only water as emissions. Full torque and power, no compromise. Normal driving range, again no compromise.</p>

<p>And at the same time, we are constantly looking for ways to make driving more fun, as demonstrated here with the Kikai Concept, that lets its driver re-discover the magic of mechanics.</p>

<p>We also strive towards &lsquo;always better&rsquo; safety for all, as we continue to democratize advanced safety technologies, because we genuinely care about the well-being of our customers.</p>

<p>Last year, Toyota Safety Sense was already available &ndash; either as standard equipment or as an affordable option on 70% of our vehicles sold. Latest by the end of 2017, that will be 100%.</p>

<p>Going back to ever better cars, the first new product today, is &lsquo;Toyota Quality and Reliability&rsquo; personified: the all-New Hilux.</p>

<p>It is a car that is special to me, because it is built in South Africa, my home country. It is used all across the globe, in the toughest of circumstances.</p>

<p>Testament to this is its recent performance in the Dakar, where we finished on the podium.</p>

<p>The all-new Toyota Hilux!</p>

<p>< REVEAL ></p>

<p>So here it is - the toughest pick-up truck in the world, just got even tougher, thanks to:</p>

<ul>
<li>a chassis that is 20% more rigid,</li>
<li>20% more wheel travel,</li>
<li>and an even stronger cargo deck.</li>
</ul>

<p>Paradoxically, it is also more comfortable, quieter, and has a completely upgraded interior,</p>

<p>with near Premium Brand levels of design and execution.</p>

<p>By making it easier on its driver, the new Hilux becomes an even more capable companion,</p>

<p>ready to tackle whatever you throw at it.</p>

<p>It will of course come with Toyota Safety Sense, and with a new 2.4 D-4D engine, More powerful,</p>

<p>more frugal, and with more torque. When it arrives in dealerships in early Summer, it will be ready</p>

<p>to reassume its role of segment leader. The second new vehicle that I would like to introduce,</p>

<p>is the Toyota PROACE VERSO.</p>

<p>This brand new product, developed from our cooperation with PSA, enables us to re-enter the LCV market with full strength. Customers will have a choice of over 30 different body/engine combinations, including:</p>

<ul>
<li>various passenger versions,</li>
<li>long or mid wheelbase,</li>
</ul>

<p>but also</p>

<ul>
<li>an innovative short wheelbase version, bridging the gap between the classic Light Commercial Vehicle and a Car Derived Van.</li>
<li>And here on stand, we have the PROACE VERSO,</li>
</ul>

<p>a comfortable 8-seater MPV.</p>

<p>The new PROACE will come with two new diesels, ranging from 95hp to 180hp, and of course with Toyota Safety Sense, which helped PROACE VERSO achieve a 5-star NCAP rating.</p>

<p>There will be a wide selection of genuine Toyota accessories to suit the most diverse requirements.</p>

<p>With the comprehensive Toyota warranty, supported by a quality Toyota dealer network, PROACE is a very compelling package for anyone relying on their van to earn a living.</p>

<p>But, as you can see, there is more excitement to come. For that, let me hand over to Karl Schlicht,</p>

<p>Good morning</p>

<p>Dr. van Zyl already mentioned the enormous importance of hybrid to our brand.</p>

<p>3 examples:</p>

<ul>
<li>This year, nearly 40% of all Yaris sold will be Hybrid</li>
<li>For Auris, the hybrid mix will be nearly 60%!</li>
<li>And just a few weeks ago, with our RAV4, we introduced Hybrid in the heart of the C-SUV segment- an important next step towards our vision of 50% TOTAL hybrid sales mix by 2020.</li>
</ul>

<p>But for a few years, you have been asking, why doesn't Toyota introduce a C-Cross Over? Well we have to admit we are a little late, but - there is very good reason. We did not want to launch 'just' ANY C-Segment Cross-Over,without a knock-out design,without being able to use our latest and 1st overseas produced TNGA platform and especially, without Hybrid.</p>

<p>Today, we are ready to show you the result. We call it the C-HR, nickname or short for Coupe High Rider.</p>

<p>Ladies and Gentlemen, THE ALL NEW....TOYOTA C-HR !</p>

<p>This is not another concept !! This is the REAL production C-HR.</p>

<p>True to form, and a DESIGN BREAKTHROUGH for Toyota and the segment. A car that will change the FACE OF TOYOTA. Distinctive, evocative...and 'alive'! It is designed to appeal to an entirely new type of customer.</p>

<p>From the very start of the product definition, which was largely done in Europe, 2 elements were beyond question- untouchables...</p>

<p>- Best for Driving Dynamics (Steering and handling)</p>

<p>The Toyota C-HR appears visually bold and compact, but is (surprisingly) a spacious FULL size C-Crossover, actually only 4cm shorter than our last generation RAV4.</p>

<p>Here too, as you would now expect from Toyota, Toyota Safety Sense is watching over its occupants. Toyota C-HR will come with our latest 4th Gen 1.8 Hybrid powertrain and also with our Petrol 1.2 Turbo engine.</p>

<p>When production starts in Turkey towards the end of '16, CH-R will bring a truly unique offer to the most happening segment in the European Market.</p>

<p><span>Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and welcome to Toyota.</span><span>This is my first show as head of Toyota Motor Europe, so let me start by saying how pleased I am to be in front of you today.</span></p>

<p><span>I am South African, and have always been involved with cars. I started off joining Toyota in 1993. Until last April, I was CEO of Toyota for the African region and South-Africa. Then, when Didier was promoted to Executive Vice President of TMC, I also became the CEO for Europe Region.</span></p>

<p><span>In terms of direction, my first priority is to keep our company on track to sustainable growth, building on an ever-stronger product-range, and to ensure that Toyota is an active and responsible contributor to society here in Europe, as it is elsewhere in the world.</span><span>And we have some great technologies lined up to get there &ndash; technologies that are innovative, but that are more than just pretty showcases. Because one by one, we make them relevant by democratising them.</span></p>

<p><span>The first example is Hybrid. With this technology, we have been fighting for cleaner mobility for almost 20 years now.</span></p>

<p><span>We have the widest hybrid range in the market, with 6 Toyota models on sale today, and we are about to present the new Prius and 2 additional Toyota hybrid models that will be coming soon.</span></p>

<p><span>Lexus has 7, with also an additional model on the horizon. So, 8 for each brand! In fact, this show marks a double celebration for us: globally, we have sold a cumulative 8.000.000 hybrids, and 1.000.000 in Europe.</span></p>

<p><span>So, how did a powertrain that some commentators called &lsquo;a PR stunt&rsquo; at the time become so successful? Well, because hybrid is the practical way towards green motoring:</span><span>No need for plugs, and no worries about range or usability. On the contrary &ndash; it actually delivers a more relaxed and rewarding drive than a conventional car.</span></p>

<p><span>But we also made it accessible. We can offer hybrid for roughly the same price as a similarly powered diesel.</span><span>We continue to build on our Hybrid know-how, with our newest and most future-oriented technology: fuel cell. Sales of the Mirai are starting here in Germany, Denmark and the UK. And recently, we have decided to add Belgium with more markets to follow.</span></p>

<p><span>The second technology that we are counting on to achieve our goal, is deeply rooted in our philosophy to look after the well-being of our customers. I&rsquo;m referring to the cross-carline roll-out of Toyota Safety Sense.</span><span>This package of active safety features is already available on Aygo, Yaris, Auris, Avensis and Land Cruiser, and will find its way into more models in the months to come. In fact, by the end of this year, 70% of our customers will have access to this life saving technology, either standard on their new car, or as a truly affordable option.</span></p>

<p><span>And the 3rd technology that I want to highlight, is our new development programme TNGA, or Toyota New Global Architecture. In recent months, we have talked a lot about how it would change our manufacturing approach. It draws on our production expertise and the craftsmanship of our workers, to introduce more flexibility in our plants: flexibility in terms of capacity, but also more variety in what we can produce.</span><span>Ultimately, TNGA will make for simpler, slimmer and greener plants. But in the first place, TNGA is about creating better cars. It is about standardizing the size and position of those parts which the customer doesn&rsquo;t see, and using the freed-up saved resources on what they care about: better engines, better chassis, better transmissions, better safety and of course better design.</span></p>

<p><span>But this is a motorshow, so let me hand over to Karl Schlicht, who can show you what I mean in the metal.</span></p>

<p><span>Thank you Johan.</span><span>You mentioned better design, so let me start with a stunning example.</span><span>About a year ago in Paris, we showed you our 3 door C-HR Concept. An idea for a compact, urban SUV with dramatic styling. Driven by that excitement, I am delighted to show you the 2nd C-HR Concept, this time as a 5 door. This concept serves as an inspiration to the designers and engineers&nbsp;working behind the scenes, because today I can confirm that this vehicle will go into production.</span></p>

<p><span>In a few months, at the Geneva Motorshow, we will unveil the final design of the production model.</span><span>It will be based on the TNGA programme and will come with a range of powertrains, of course including our signature Hybrid powertrain. </span></p>

<p><span>C-HR fits in a tradition that we started in the early 90s, when we revolutionized the 4x4 market with the compact RAV4.</span></p>

<p><span>RAV4 is still a reference in the segment it created, with the current generation being the most successful ever. And today, we take it to the next level &ndash; by adding Toyota hybrid power &ndash; the culmination of 2 Toyota specialties: SUV AND Hybrid in one desirable package.</span><span>The new RAV4 introduces the latest and most advanced version of Toyota Safety Sense. Our Pre-Collision system recognizes pedestrians, and Adaptive Cruise Control has been integrated. </span></p>

<p><span>In addition, the new Panoramic View Monitor gives a birds-eye image of the area around the car.</span><span>The new RAV4 Hybrid brings Toyota&rsquo;s feel-good driving to the SUV segment, with its 2.5L Hybrid system delivering 197 HP, with 115g of CO<sub>2</sub>, well ahead of any competitor with comparable performance. And it is also available as Toyota&rsquo;s first AWD Hybrid in Europe, offering additional traction and towing capacity.</span></p>

<p><span>So when this RAV4 Hybrid arrives in showrooms at the beginning of next year, it will again solidify its role as the segment benchmark. And yet the biggest news today, is Prius &ndash; more than just a new generation, it is the rebirth of an icon.</span></p>

<p><span>When the first Prius was launched in Japan in 1997, few people could foresee the shockwave that it would cause.</span></p>

<p><span>But today, 3.5M Prius, and 8M hybrids later, no one is left in any doubt. And not just sales.</span><span>Prius fundamentally changed the automotive and mobility landscape forever. Like the generations that went before, this Prius introduces an entirely new hybrid drivetrain that will find its way into a growing number of Toyota models.</span><span>It has smaller and lighter components, motors and batteries with higher power density and reduced internal losses. In Prius, it will be linked to the most efficient petrol engine ever. Jointly, taken together, this ultra-reliable technology - targets an efficiency boost of 18% in the European homologation cycle. </span></p>

<p><span>But equally important, this new hybrid also delivers better driving, with even smoother and more responsive throttle control.</span></p>

<p><span>And still, innovation doesn&rsquo;t stop there. It is also our very first model developed under the TNGA programme. Prius is built on an entirely new and much stiffer platform, and benefits from all the TNGA advantages.</span></p>

<p><span>Better handling thanks to a class-leading low centre of gravity, better safety, better ergonomics and more freedom for the stylists to match a provocative, emotional design to ground-breaking aerodynamics.</span></p>

<p><span>And inside, a welcoming interior with an instrument panel that combines high-tech features with a zen-like design and quality materials.</span><span>Ladies and gentlemen,</span><span>the new Prius!</span></p>

In this way it is integral to Toyota&rsquo;s mission to build ever-better cars.</strong></p>
]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span>Equally, it is transforming the way Toyota manufactures vehicles, introducing the most fundamental improvements yet to the Toyota Production System. The long term benefits will be smaller, more flexible factories with production lines that can quickly and easily be adapted to meet different manufacturing requirements.</span></p>

<p>The new Prius uses the first TNGA platform to be developed, one which will also underpin a number of other future models. Further platforms will be developed to provide comprehensive provision for a complete model range.</p>

<p>Toyota takes the concept of platform sharing to a high level with TNGA by standardising components and their lay-out across different vehicle segments, and fully integrating both its manufacturing operations and its suppliers in the new concept at a very early stage.</p>

<p>Through TNGA customers will be able to enjoy more stylish cars that are safer and more enjoyable to drive. At the same time, Toyota will substantially reduce the number and variety of different vehicle components, enabling smarter development and manufacturing that will increase efficiency and save time.</p>

<p><b>Improved driving dynamics with a low centre of gravity</b></p>

<p>TNGA directly contributes to making cars more enjoyable to drive. The new TNGA vehicle platforms are designed to achieve a low vehicle centre of gravity, a quality that is fundamental to securing a more engaging driving position and more precise and responsive handling, with less body roll. This means better handling can be achieved directly from the quality of the chassis and body without compromising ride and comfort.</p>

<p>TNGA promotes more responsive handling by significantly increasing vehicle body rigidity with strategic use of high-strength steels. The impact of this can be seen in the new Prius, which benefits from a 60 per cent more rigid body shell, with high-strength steel used as reinforcement in key areas. Higher rigidity contributes to better chassis responsiveness and ride quality for a more rewarding driving experience.</p>

<p>Ergonomic excellence in vehicle packaging</p>

<p>TNGA introduces new, defined lay-out rules for the position of different state-of-the-art components which will simplify vehicle design in key areas without compromising the styling qualities that give each vehicle its individual character and appeal.</p>

<p>For example, the driving components &ndash; items such as the pedals, steering column and driver&rsquo;s seat &ndash; will conform to one of five different lay-outs according to vehicle type and platform. Previously much time was spent on millimetre-adjustment to define the most suitable design and arrangement of these components to achieve the optimum driving position in every new model. The TNGA solution will provide an ergonomically ideal combination to suit the vehicle, in line with the floor height provided by the platform. Each lay-out can be further refined with detailed adjustment to the pedal and pedal operation angles and the position and angle of the steering column.</p>

<p>This will be effective whether the emphasis is on sporting character or practical packaging with plenty of rear seat legroom. The five lay-outs cover the requirements of the complete vehicle range, from compact sports cars to SUVs.</p>

<p>TNGA also brings a new approach to the design of the engine compartment, with a focus on placing components lower down in a more rationally organised &ldquo;clean and tidy&rdquo; space.&nbsp;This allows for a more attractive, lower hood, which in turn improves safety by giving the driver a clearer forward view. It also helps lower the car&rsquo;s centre of gravity, contributing to better handling and stability and a more engaging drive.</p>

<p><b>Styling freedom</b></p>

<p>Although TNGA will produce a standardised vehicle architecture and many uniform components, it will not lead to a range of vehicles that are similar in appearance and constrained by their use of shared elements. The impact of TNGA is on areas that are largely out of sight, so that designers retain the freedom to produce cars that are visually distinctive and individual.</p>

<p>TNGA will empower Toyota designers to produce stylish vehicles with a lower stance and more appealing proportions, as can be seen in the new Prius and the C-HR Concept car.</p>

<p><b>Improved safety performance</b></p>

<p>The new TNGA platforms and designs have prioritised the highest active and passive safety standards. They are designed to meet the exacting standards of indepen-dent crash testing programmes worldwide and provide impressive levels of active and preventive safety through the functions and systems of Toyota Safety Sense. And by enabling a lower hood height, TNGA also provides the driver with a deeper and wider view of the road ahead.</p>

<p><b>Smart development and manufacturing</b></p>

<p>TNGA is not only helping Toyota create ever better cars, it also has a direct, positive impact on product development and manufacturing. In the most significant changes yet to the Toyota Production System, TNGA will ultimately lead to vehicle factories being smaller and more flexible, better able to respond quickly and easily to accommodate new or additional models.</p>

<p>Production lines mounted on the floor rather than being suspended from above will be simpler to install and adjust in length. Toyota anticipates TNGA will enable multiple models to be produced from the same line, supported by new, more efficient ways of producing parts and systems. Accommodating changes in design and specifications will also be simpler and quicker to achieve. Further gains will be made in environmental efficiency, by using equipment that is not only more compact, but also uses less energy.</p>

<p>The sharing of many common components among different vehicles in different segments will greatly reduce the number of different parts that have to be designed, manufactured and supplied.</p>

<p>Toyota calculates that TNGA will reduce the amount of manpower required for vehicle development by 20 per cent, giving it more time to devote to designing ever-better cars. ]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>Inspired by the warm welcome that the first TOYOTA C-HR Concept vehicle received when it premiered at the 2014 Paris motor show, designers have created a second C-HR Concept. Boasting a 5-door cabin, this new design study is more closely representative of the compact crossover which is now confirmed for production. Its more refined execution is designed to gage reactions from specific target customer groups, in order that their feedback may further inform the project designers and engineers.</p>

<p>This highly-innovative design study for a stylish, lightweight and dynamic hybrid crossover is designed to stand out in an increasingly homogenous market place. It is the next rendition of Akio Toyoda&rsquo;s promise, on taking over the presidency of Toyota, to build always better cars that bring the fun back to driving.</p>

<p>Its compact proportions placing it between the B-SUV and C-SUV segments, the TOYOTA C-HR Concept offers the combination of outstanding agility and flexible packaging, both essential to those with urban lifestyles.</p>

<p>It has been designed around a new platform, developed under the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) programme, to satisfy customers&rsquo; demands for state of the art handling and controllability. In conjunction, a new, advanced, full-hybrid powertrain offers a uniquely engaging driving experience matched to 21st century traffic conditions, whilst delivering outstanding efficiency.</p>

<p><strong>A Refined Diamond Styling Theme</strong></p>

<p>The new, 5-door C-HR Concept continues Toyota&rsquo;s exploration of an expressive new, diamond architecture styling theme. Below a compact, sensual cabin profile, the lower bodywork has been sculpted to represent the facetted surfaces of a highly-durable, precision-cut gemstone.</p>

<p>In plan form, the corners of the bodyshell have been cleanly shaved off. This both removes mass from the overall volume, and highlights the powerful flair of the front and rear wheel arches, reinforcing the crossover&rsquo;s broad, planted stance from every viewpoint, and matching the target customer&rsquo;s desire for a vehicle with a confident and sporty look.</p>

<p>The front of the C-HR Concept represents a further development of Toyota&rsquo;s Keen Look design identity. Above a robust central bumper profile, the slim upper grille has been evolved into a floating &lsquo;wing&rsquo; graphic which flows seamlessly around the front corners of the vehicle. At the wing extremities, streamlined headlamp clusters combine advanced lighting technology with diamond-pattern detailing.</p>

<p>Adding impact to the vehicle corners to further reinforce the new crossover&rsquo;s solid stance and the low centre of gravity inhe-rent in its new TNGA platform, the large, diamond-patterned lower grille is flanked by strongly sculpted downward projections. These powerful frontal elements are underscored by an aero-inspired, floating front spoiler.</p>

<p>From the side, the highly-facetted lower body, muscular wheel arches and aggressively angular rear shoulder are juxtaposed with an exceptionally sleek cabin profile. Its &lsquo;floating&rsquo; status reinforced by a piano black paint finish, the roof is detailed with patterned openings which create a uniquely animated play of light within the C-HR Concept&rsquo;s cabin space.</p>

<p>Seen from the rear, the glasshouse tapers dramatically down to a powerfully facetted lower body highlighted by a pronounced diffuser, integrated foglamps and highly-distinctive, aero-inspired, floating rear lamp clusters incorporating diamond-pattern lens detailing.</p>

<p>The &lsquo;diamond-cut&rsquo;, machined-surface spokes of a unique, 21&rdquo; wheel design hint at the sophistication and efficiency of the C-HR Concept&rsquo;s full-hybrid powertrain.</p>

<p><strong>Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) Platform</strong></p>

<p>The new C-HR Concept is a striking representation of the benefits of TNGA; an innovative, integrated vehicle development approach for powertrain components and platforms being introduced on new Toyota models from this year forward.</p>

<p>TNGA manifests itself in the new C-HR Concept through an increase in body rigidity, better collision performance, improvements to the vehicle underbody and suspension, and a lowering of the centre of gravity.</p>

<p>Acting in conjunction, higher body rigidity and a lower centre of gravity reduce body movement and vehicle roll when cornering. This allows for a reduction in suspension stiffness and a resultant increase in ride comfort with no detriment to driving dynamics, equipping the C-HR Concept with the responsive handling, agility and straight-line stability on a par with the best C-segment hatchbacks.</p>

<p>Incorporating a set of new production techniques and technologies that will make it easier to turn vehicle designs and features into production reality, TNGA groups vehicle development to promote a strategic sharing of parts and powertrain components. This approach will reduce the resources required for development by 20% or more, freeing up investment for improved product strengths and advanced technology development for sustainable growth.</p>

<p><strong>A New, More Efficient Hybrid System</strong></p>

<p>C-HR Concept doesn&rsquo;t only stand out through its unique design. It also introduces hybrid technology to the segment. In this case, a new and more compact full-hybrid powertrain with lighter componentry. It reflects significant advances in battery, electric motor and petrol engine technologies, offering further reductions in fuel consumption and CO<sub>2</sub> emissions.</p>

<p>Operating in synergy with a petrol engine boasting world-beating thermal efficiency of over 40%, the C-HR Concept&rsquo;s next-generation full-hybrid powertrain combines state-of-the-art battery technology with new, highly-compact electric motors offering a marked increase in power density.</p>

<p>More compact, lighter in weight and more efficient than Toyota&rsquo;s current hybrid systems, the new full-hybrid powertrain developed under the TNGA programme will also be notably more refined, and even easier and more intuitive to drive, with a natural, smooth and immediate response to driver inputs.</p>

<p><strong>A Global Project Rooted in the European Market</strong></p>

<p>The new C-HR Concept is another tangible application of Toyota&rsquo;s new Global Vision thinking, first advocated by President Akio Toyoda in 2011.</p>

<p>Recognizing that Europe is the most demanding market for small and mid-sized vehicles, Toyota uses this region as benchmark for defining future global A-, B- and C-segment cars. Toyota Motor Europe (TME) has also become the company&rsquo;s skill centre for perceived quality and vehicle dynamics.</p>

<p>In the case of the C-HR Concept, there was close cooperation between Toyota&rsquo;s vehicle planning centres in Japan and in Europe, in order to get a good understanding of the latest European customer demands and vehicle trends. The styling of the concept car is the result of a global cooperation between ED2 (European Design Development Centre) and the other Toyota design centres.</p>
