The all-new sixth-generation takes the RAV4 experience to new heights and encourages a fresh spirit of adventure with its authentic SUV design. Its go-anywhere credentials are strengthened by new technology for a confident, fun and efficient drive.

Drivers benefit from features such as the new shift-by-wire system, enhanced head-up display on higher grades and an updated steering wheel design. A more comfortable ride comes via noise and vibration reduction measures, and a spacious interior.

The RAV4’s authentic character and distinctive SUV identity have evolved via the tough, modern new exterior and refined interior of the sixth generation.

The three-dimensional SUV hammerhead design at the front and contoured bonnet create a powerful and modern first impression, strengthened by new LED headlights and an aerodynamic fog light bezel. New thin LEDs generate a distinctive look and feature an integrated turn signal, as well as an Adaptive High Beam System on the high grade.

New LED signature lights at the rear offer an indication of the advanced technology within the vehicle and integrate all functions into a single unit. Their stylish horizontal elements combine with a new model logo – boldly displayed across the rear – to express the all-new RAV4’s authentic personality.

The hard surfaces on the side of the body create a high-contrast appearance with the broad surfaces around the rear wheel arch, which is sculpted to emphasise a sense of width and create an imposing stance.

New 18-inch and 20-inch wheels are available in distinctive grey metallic, black, and machined metal. They emphasise an elevated ride height and flat roofline, which together create powerful proportions to express the all-new RAV4’s off-road capability.

A distinctive colour palette is intended to harmonise with nature and express an urban sophistication. It includes new Warm Stone, Forest Green, Urban Shade and Avantgarde Bronze, which captures a sense of SUV toughness and modernity. A more advanced appearance is achieved via the optional bi-tone colouring, which adds a black roof and A-pillar.

Inside, a redesigned cabin retains practical SUV functionality alongside a robust new look.  The interior is intelligently organised to give a feeling of space and comfort, while meeting the needs of the modern connected user. 

The horizontally-uniform dash sets the tone. It not only contains the latest multimedia and display technology, but it also creates a flowing structure. Visibility is maximised by lowering the top surface of the instrument panel by around 40 mm. A bold colour accent matches the door inserts and seats to emphasise width and space.

Confident, intuitive driving is encouraged by the unified digital cockpit. An all-new, free-floating 12.3-inch instrument panel is positioned to be easily visible through the steering wheel. Clear, high-contrast graphics are displayed on a bright LCD screen, with customisable settings to allow drivers to select the information displayed.

The new steering wheel includes a revised button layout for intuitive use while heating coverage has been extended to the whole grip area.

Storage and functionality have been engineered into the new RAV4 with a priority on practicality and digital connectivity, and the redesigned centre console emphasises this user-friendly philosophy. On the High grade, it includes two wireless chargers and two 45 W USB chargers, enabling front occupants to charge multiple devices simultaneously. The USB chargers are three times more powerful than standard 15 W versions and can cut charging times by a third. The chargers are compatible with tablets and notebooks, creating a practical in-car digital workspace.

In addition to the front charging solutions, on Mid and High grades, three further USB ports are conveniently located in the rear, bringing the total to five and ensuring all passengers can use devices without worrying about charging levels, even during long journeys.

Two interior colours are offered – refined black and stylish light grey – each creating a unique atmosphere through high-quality materials, offset by emotive red or blue accents on certain grades. Newly developed seats are stylishly shaped and functional, with synthetic leather featuring aligned perforations and eye-catching details.

As well as the elegant new shift-by-wire switch assembly, the centre console gains another stylish accent with a new metallic painted ornamentation, coordinated with the similar decoration on the steering wheel. Buttons throughout the interior are illuminated in white for better visibility, while white indirect lighting adds a refined atmosphere.

The premium appearance is created without compromising cargo space. The rear storage area is shaped to maximise capacity and includes full fold-flat rear seats suitable for long items such as golf bags or surfboards. A powered boot is fitted as standard and on higher grades features a hands-free kick sensor with an expanded detection area to ease access.

Toyota introduces its cutting-edge new Arene software development platform for the first time, enabling a new digital environment, including a new-generation ToyotaConnect multimedia system – making its global debut – and new Toyota Connected services. The multimedia system is intuitive and accurate, with enhanced connectivity, navigation and security tools. With a processor four times faster than the previous generation and eight times more stories, the Arene-powered system is more responsive and easier to use.

A new home screen concept was designed with European customers in mind. It gives drivers all relevant information in one view, smoothly integrated across all screens. An intuitive, user-friendly design – with personalised user profiles, customisable shortcuts, a quick settings menu, and data privacy features – makes navigating the in-car digital environment easy.

The flat, clean 12.9-inch LCD display has a tactile response calibrated to enhance user interaction through evolved touch sensitivity and operational speed for easy use.

A higher quality of information can be displayed via clear visuals, Google Points of Interest, real-time navigation details such as mobile and fixed speed cameras, powered by TomTom, and Low Emission Zone (LEZ) alerts to help drivers respect speed limits and environmental regulations. The integration of the navigation map and the three-dimensional lane assistance in the driver’s combimeter reduces potential distractions and makes directions easier to follow.

In the RAV4 PHEV model, a geo-fencing function ensures sufficient EV range to navigate upcoming LEZ or BEV-mandatory zones by intelligently switching between hybrid and electric modes to maintain an appropriate battery state of charge.

The new 12.3-inch combination meter, enhanced by Arene, features a variety of display options. These include navigation, safety and driver assistance features, and the ECO view, which provides the driver with fuel economy and power consumption data on the current journey as well as past information. Additional displays include a charge indicator for PHEV models, while full-screen animations are shown when changing drive modes and there is a modernised startup display.

A new head-up display (HUD) – available on higher grades – keeps the driver’s eyes on the road thanks to a tilted projection area. At more than double the size of the previous generation, the new HUD offers more space to display information. The system moves the projection area forward, projecting approximately 4-6 metres in front of the driver for clearer visibility and sense of depth. Drivers can adjust the information displayed via full, standard and minimum pre-set options.

The digital cockpit experience is enhanced by a responsive and precise voice assistant, developed to easily understand natural commands from the driver or passenger. Comprehension is significantly improved thanks to updated microphones located directly above each front seat, allowing convenient voice control and helping keep the driver’s eyes on the road.

The latest MyToyota app allows users to personalise services through subscription options (trial period may differ according to country).

Standard Services is the essential package, with a 10-year pan-European trial period. It includes cloud navigation, voice agent to control in-car features such as navigation and climate, over the air updates, as well as MyToyota in-app services such as driving analytics and online booking. Additional functions beyond the Standard Services are available as part of optional packages:

·       The Intelligent Voice Agent unlocks a broad range of content from sports results, Wikipedia searches and weather to flight or stock status. It controls the new embedded Spotify Music Streaming* interface. Music streaming delivers a seamless user experience with superior sound quality and reduced mobile data use.

·       Smart Navigation informs the driver about mobile speed cameras while Remote services can remotely control the vehicle.

·       In the event of a collision, the new Drive Recorder function is automatically triggered, recording from 10 seconds prior to an impact to up to 30 seconds after, and saving the file for potential insurance purposes. Using the integrated safety cameras, the system enables 360° recording on higher‑grade models. It can also be activated manually to record up to 90 minutes of driving, for export via USB.

·       For additional peace of mind, the Remote Immobiliser* can be activated manually or set to automatically activate after the doors are locked. It requires a passcode to be entered in the multimedia system or MyToyota app to enable the ignition, therefore preventing unauthorised start-up of the vehicle and reducing the risk of theft. If the vehicle is stolen, the MyToyota app assists with recovery via a partnership with Vodafone. Thanks to the Car Theft Assistant service, after the theft is reported to the police by the customer, Vodafone liaises with local authorities to track the vehicle, whilst updating users in their preferred language.

·       With the new RAV4, Toyota introduces its next generation Smart Digital Key+, designed to provide seamless vehicle access using a smartphone or smartwatch. It now operates directly through the smartphone wallet, eliminating the need to launch an application and offering a faster, more intuitive experience. Enhanced functionality ensures the digital key continues to operate even if the NFC-compatible smartphone’s battery is depleted. Up to seven digital keys can be created, enabling users to conveniently share access with up to six additional people.

Regular over-the-air software updates will deliver continuous feature improvements to expand the possibilities and convenience for customers on an ongoing basis.

Advanced software enables new safety technology

The Arene software development platform represents the beginning of a new era of software-defined vehicles in which advanced digital technology creates new opportunities to enhance safety and contribute to Toyota’s goal of eliminating all accidents.

Arene enables the latest Toyota T-Mate system, including a new generation of Toyota Safety Sense, which is introduced for the first time on RAV4. This delivers a more comprehensive suite of safety and driver assistance tools as standard, performing faster than before. 

The new Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) alerts the driver to vehicles they might not have seen in their side mirrors. It now includes the new Rear Vehicle Approach Indicator, which is designed to reduce driving stress, especially on highways. When activated, it issues audible and visual alerts when a vehicle is approaching at speed from behind, allowing time for the driver to react safely.

Front Cross Traffic Alert is a new feature for RAV4 which complements the BSM to provide drivers with even more comprehensive awareness of their surroundings. It supports safe navigation through crossing traffic at busy junctions, by detecting vehicles passing in front and issuing a visual alert and an audible warning if a high risk of collision is anticipated.

The more advanced Lane Change Assist now helps drivers to change lanes safely and conveniently during highway driving. When the driver activates the turn signal, the system ensures the manoeuvre is safe by checking whether a vehicle is present in the blind spot before steering assist automatically completes the intended lane change. Lane Change Assist functions when Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Tracing Assist are activated.

The Pre-Collision System has been upgraded by expanding head-on collision detection and improving recognition of obstacles, bicycles and motorbikes. It works by alerting the driver with audio and visual warnings, and braking assistance. If the driver is unable to slow in time, the brakes automatically engage to prevent or mitigate a collision. In the event of an impact triggering airbag deployment, the new Secondary Collision Brake automatically brings the car to a gradual stop, in case the driver is unable to do so.

The remote-controlled Advanced Park function on High grade models allows the driver to control parking from a smartphone while standing outside the car. For added safety, if the user removes their finger from the device, the vehicle stops immediately. Manual parking is also simpler than ever thanks to the improved Panoramic View Monitor, which now includes a three-dimensional image to provide a more complete view of the area immediately around the vehicle.

Over the air software updates enable Toyota Safety Sense to remain up to date with the latest functionalities and improvements.

Driving dynamics

The all-new RAV4 elevates the journey for drivers and passengers alike by integrating new technologies and materials to sharpen driving dynamics and improve ride comfort.

A lightweight, high-rigidity body is built on the enhanced K platform of the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA). Overall, the body is 9.7% more rigid than the previous generation, while changes to the suspension mounting points increase rigidity in those areas by 31% at the front and 27% at the rear. The result is better road holding and improved cornering performance.

Enhancements to the body design and construction also benefit passengers, who can enjoy a quieter, smoother ride. Changes to the suspension mounting points and A-pillar construction combine with high-damping adhesive in the footwells, underfloor and rear wheel arch to reduce vibration. New sliding parts in the shock absorber provide a smoother ride at low speed, while softer suspension bushings further reduce the vibrations from the road surface. Meanwhile, wind noise is reduced by optimising the shape of the door mirrors, adjusting the profile of the A-pillar and improving door sealing.

A new electronically controlled braking system is implemented for the first time. It delivers a more natural and easier-to-use feel by improving capacity and stopping distance. Vehicle Braking Posture Control (VBPC) is another new feature. It uses braking inputs at each wheel to improve stability by minimising body roll and yaw, thereby enhancing turn-in response. The new RAV4 also features the new Cooperative Steering Driving Force Control (CSDFC) system, which synchronises body pitch and roll to increase cornering stability.

Downhill Assist Control is now offered on both HEV and PHEV AWD models. This system automatically applies the brakes when going down steep hills to prevent excessive speed, letting drivers concentrate on steering for safer, more controlled descents. To turn it on, simply press the button located on the right side of the centre console.

Meanwhile, the new shift-by-wire system enables intuitive, electronically controlled gear shift, via a unidirectional toggle switch in the centre console. The discreet switch has a smooth, two-stage operation. All drive modes can be selected in a single action by pushing forwards or backwards, while parking mode is activated manually via a dedicated button, or automatically when the vehicle is turned off.

The all-wheel-drive system increases driving confidence in slippery conditions and ensures the all‑new RAV4 is ready for any adventure, on or off road. The system works seamlessly by automatically distributing drive to the rear wheels to suppress front wheelspin at low speeds and during cornering for a more stable, dependable drive.

In AWD specification, the all-new RAV4 uses the electronically controlled braking system to strengthen its off-road capability, by increasing the limited slip differential effect when wheelspin is encountered on one wheel. Brake response is faster and more powerful, limiting slip for longer to allow torque to be transferred to the grounded wheel for a smooth exit. 

The AWD version also benefits from powerful towing performance, with a towing capacity of 2,000 kg in both PHEV and hybrid specification.

As the first vehicle to feature Toyota's new-generation plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology, the ultra-efficient new RAV4 embodies a dual DNA: a pure electric vehicle for daily commutes and an efficient hybrid for longer journeys. With up to 137 km of electric driving (WLTP combined cycle) – enough to meet the daily needs of most European customers – it delivers this flexibility without compromise on range or dependability.

The new generation 2.5 litre plug-in hybrid system is built on a simplified configuration and new battery pack, delivering more power, acceleration and efficiency, whilst also unlocking faster charging solutions.

The distinctive quiet ride with powerful acceleration and responsive handling synonymous with all-electric driving is available in intelligent all-wheel drive (AWD-i) and, for the first time on a RAV4 PHEV, front-wheel drive (FWD). In AWD specification, the all-new RAV4 boasts class-leading total power output of 309 DIN hp, while the FWD version delivers 272 DIN hp.

A new battery pack originates from Toyota’s electric vehicle development and includes a high-capacity lithium-ion battery with 22.68 kWh, 30% more capacity than its predecessor and 8% greater output. It works alongside an improved front motor – which now delivers 150 kW, a 16 kW increase – to achieve powerful acceleration. The AWD RAV4 achieves an exhilarating 0–100 km/h time of 5.8 seconds.

Significantly faster charging has also been enabled through the new battery pack. Plug-in charging with a 50 kW DC onboard charger – a rare feature for a D-segment SUV – can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in as little as 30 minutes depending on conditions. Charging at home or with standard public chargers is also quicker due to a new 11 kW AC charger which is twice as fast as the previous version, replenishing the battery in as little as three hours.

Battery performance remains reliable and consistent, even in harsh conditions, thanks to improved cooling solutions. Its thermal management system switches automatically between coolant circuits depending on the operating conditions, maintaining the ideal temperature for optimal efficiency and peak performance, even when charging in cold weather.

In addition to the substantial performance and charging improvements, the new generation PHEV system also contributes to enhanced driving dynamics via a lower centre of gravity and increased body rigidity, achieved by moving the battery under the floor.

Components have also been relocated into the engine compartment, contributing to a simpler layout and more cabin space. This has been accomplished by incorporating the DC converter into the power control unit (PCU), which has been downsized. It is integrated into a next-generation eAxle for quieter, improved performance in hybrid mode.

The plug-in hybrid RAV4 uses its electric range smartly with the help of geo-fencing technology, which automatically optimises EV driving to be ready for whatever the journey brings. By combining real-time road and traffic data from cloud navigation with insights into a driver’s routine routes and driving style, the system can automatically switch between hybrid and electric modes to optimise range. If the destination is in a Low Emission Zone, or requires travel through one, geo-fencing ensures sufficient charge to do so entirely in EV mode.

With the new generation, Toyota not only introduces the most advanced RAV4 PHEV to the market but also a highly developed PHEV ecosystem, including PHEV insurance and Toyota charging solutions. Users are assisted to get the most out of the PHEV technology via the onboard multimedia system, which offers live charging information. An additional feature offers information about the location and cost of charging points, ensuring a smooth charging process and a rewarding overall ownership experience.

The latest hybrid technology

In full hybrid specification, the all-new RAV4 also benefits from Toyota’s latest technology. A new battery pack and simplified system layout contribute to a more efficient and dynamic drive in FWD and AWD specification.

Toyota’s 2.5-litre hybrid system delivers a responsive start and seamless, EV-style acceleration with direct driving response thanks to the increased 221 Nm of torque. The AWD now delivers 194 DIN hp total system power, with the FWD version giving 185 DIN hp.

As well as performance, fuel efficiency has also been increased and, in hybrid specification, the all-new RAV4 achieves up to 5.8 l/100 km (WLTP combined).

Motor output has been enhanced via updates to the transaxle and power control unit, as well as a newly developed, high-power lithium-ion battery pack which is smaller and lighter than its predecessor. This brings increased input and output, for improved fuel economy and drivability. A new die-cast aluminium case makes integration simpler via integrated fixations. The use of welding between battery cells has reduced the number of components while fuses are integrated into the battery pack to eliminate the fuse box.

Updates to the transaxle motor see the coil end reduced, a modified magnet arrangement, and a new lubrication structure. These changes reduce loss and enhance output compared with the previous generation.

GR SPORT

Exclusive electronic power steering settings have been tuned specifically for the RAV4 GR SPORT, to deliver a more solid, sporty steering feeling.

Intelligent all-wheel drive (AWD-i) specification boasts class-leading total power output of 304 DIN hp, contributing to an exhilarating 0-100 km/h time of 5.8 seconds.

As well as creating a more exciting drive, the new battery pack maintains reliable and consistent performance, even in tough conditions, thanks to improved cooling solutions. Its thermal management system switches automatically between coolant circuits depending on the operating conditions, keeping the battery at the ideal temperature to maintain optimum efficiency. It also ensures peak performance even when charging in cold conditions.

As well as performance and charging advancements, the new generation of plug-in hybrid system also contributes to enhanced driving dynamics via a lower centre of gravity and increased body rigidity, achieved thanks to the battery’s under-floor location. This has been accomplished by incorporating the DC converter into the power control unit (PCU), which has been downsized and integrated into the transaxle.

The all-new plug-in hybrid RAV4 uses its 100 km* (WLTP combined) of electric range smartly with the help of geo-fencing technology, which automatically optimises EV driving to be ready for whatever the journey brings. By combining real-time road and traffic data from cloud navigation with insights into a driver’s routine routes and driving style, the system can automatically switch between hybrid and electric modes to optimise range. If the destination is in a low emission zone, or requires travel through one, geo-fencing ensures sufficient charge to do so entirely in EV mode.

A front-wheel-drive (FWD) configuration is introduced on a plug-in hybrid RAV4 for the first time, making enhanced electrification even more accessible. It delivers 268 DIN hp of power.

In full hybrid specification, the all-new RAV4 also benefits from Toyota’s latest technology. By improving the transaxle, power control unit, battery and other components, motor output is enhanced, achieving seamless acceleration and a responsive start with direct driving response. The AWD-i now delivers 191 DIN hp total system power and the FWD version giving 183 DIN hp.

With the new generation, Toyota not only introduces the most advanced RAV4 PHEV to the market but also a highly developed PHEV ecosystem, including PHEV insurance and Toyota charging solutions. This will enhance our customers' experience by making the charging process smooth and the overall ownership rewarding and enjoyable. Finally, we aim to ensure minimal environmental impact in real life by maximizing the mileage driven in EV mode.

GR SPORT

The all-new RAV4 delivers a more dynamic driving experience and a sophisticated motorsports-inspired character in GR SPORT specification.

A 20 mm wider tread combines with a high-performance damper design, strengthened rear suspension brace and dedicated retuning of the suspension and power steering for a more stable, engaging drive. Lightweight 20-inch black alloy wheels – in exclusive five-unit, twin-spoke GR SPORT design – also contribute to optimised air flow.

Emphasising its connection to the multiple World Championship-winning TOYOTA GAZOO Racing motorsports teams, the RAV4 GR SPORT adopts console knee pads, aluminium brake and throttle pedals, and sports-inspired seat to elevate the pure driving experience.

An eye-catching and sporty first impression is generated by a distinctive “functional matrix” grille design finished in the GR-exclusive hexagonal G-mesh pattern, which creates a deeper 3D effect. Inside, a stylish black interior is intended to encourage focus on the road ahead. It features discreet GR logos and emotive red accents, including on the steering wheel and knee pads as well as the synthetic leather and suede seat, which is exclusive to the GR SPORT version.

Advanced software enables new safety technology

The Arene software development platform in the all-new RAV4 represents the beginning of a new era of software-defined vehicles in which advanced digital technology creates new opportunities to enhance safety and contribute to Toyota’s ultimate goal of eliminating all accidents.

Arene enables the latest Toyota T-Mate systems, including a new generation of Toyota Safety Sense, which is introduced for the very first time. This delivers a more comprehensive suite of safety and driver assistance tools as standard, performing faster than ever before.  

Front Cross Traffic Alert is a new feature for the all-new RAV4. It protects the vehicle from crossing traffic at busy junctions, by detecting vehicles passing in front and issuing a visual alert before activating an audible warning if a high risk of collision is anticipated. It complements the new Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) – which alerts the driver to any vehicles they might not have seen in their side mirrors – to provide drivers with an even more comprehensive awareness of their surroundings. The BSM now also includes the new Rear Vehicle Approach Indicator, which is designed to reduce driving stress, especially on highways. When activated, it issues an audible alert when a vehicle is approaching at speed from behind, allowing time for the driver to react safely.

The new and more advanced Lane Change Assist now helps drivers to change lanes safely and conveniently during highway driving. When the driver activates the turn signal, the system ensures the manoeuvre is safe by checking whether a vehicle is present in the blind spot before steering assist automatically completes the intended lane change. Lane Change Assist functions when Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Tracing Assist are activated.

The Pre-Collision System has been upgraded by expanding head-on collision detection and improving recognition of obstacles, bicycles and motorbikes. It works by alerting the driver with audio and visual warnings, and braking assistance. If the driver is unable to slow in time, the brakes automatically engage to prevent or mitigate a collision. In the event of an impact triggering airbag deployment, the new Secondary Collision Brake automatically brings the car to a gradual stop, in case the driver is unable to do so.

The remote-controlled Advanced Park function brings more convenience by allowing the driver to control parking from a smartphone while standing outside the car. For added safety, if the user removes their finger from the device, the vehicle stops immediately. Manual parking is also simpler than ever thanks to the improved Panoramic View Monitor, which now includes a three-dimensional image to provide a more complete view of the area immediately around the vehicle.

An all-new digital experience

The latest RAV4 marks the debut of the latest multimedia system, which is faster and more compact as part of the all-new digital ecosystem powered by Arene, which creates a seamless digital in-car experience.

A higher quality of information can be displayed via clear visuals, Google Points of Interest, and real-time navigation details such as speed cameras and Low Emission Zones (LEZ) alerts to assist the driver in respecting environmental regulations. The integration of the navigation map combined with the three-dimensional lane assistance in the driver’s 12.3” combimeter reduces potential distractions and makes directions easier to follow.

A new 12.9" home screen concept, designed with European customers in mind, gives drivers all relevant information in one view. Its intuitive, user-friendly design – with customisable shortcuts, a quick settings menu and data privacy features – makes personalising and navigating the in-car digital environment easier than ever. The digital cockpit experience is enhanced by a responsive and precise voice assistant that can handle navigation, media, in-car temperature, and vehicle control. It will receive regular over-the-air wireless software updates to ensure continuous feature improvements.

The all-new RAV4’s user-centric experience also goes beyond the cabin, via the latest MyToyota app. It allows users to personalise services through subscription options which include faster remote services, the new Smart Digital Key+, improved voice agent, drive recorder and music streaming.

The Toyota RAV4 celebrates three decades since it reshaped the automotive landscape, during which it has become an SUV icon, constantly evolving to embrace new technologies and anticipate customer expectations.

In March 1994, the Geneva Motor Show hosted the launch of a bold new type of vehicle: a compact all-wheel drive SUV based on a monocoque body. The Toyota RAV4 was truly an original, breaking new ground as an agile and versatile vehicle designed for the demands of modern life. The term SUV was uncommon at the time, but from the start of sales in May 1994, it received an overwhelmingly positive response from media and customers.

In developing the first RAV4, designers followed specific targets to stay true to the original vision, first expressed by the RAV-FOUR concept car at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show. The new model should provide generous space within a compact, sporty and distinctive body design. This new vehicle type placed the driver in a raised seating position, bringing more of the road into view thereby generating a more confident, secure driving experience. Strong off-road capabilities should combine with performance and road comfort, whilst meeting the highest standards of safety and environmental performance. Based on those principles, the RAV4 has reinvented itself and the recreational SUV segment throughout five generations so far, constantly evolving to anticipate the changing tastes of customers.

Innovation has been at the heart of its development over the last three decades, emphasised by the early adoption of efficient drivetrain technologies. As early as 1997, the RAV4 expressed Toyota’s commitment to exploring new technologies to reduce environmental impact when a battery electric (BEV) version went on sale in selected markets.

Since then, the RAV4 saw the introduction of Toyota’s class-leading hybrid electric (HEV) technology into the SUV segment with the third generation in 2016, complimenting the existing line-up of efficient petrol and diesel engines. A Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) entered the range in 2020, emphasising Toyota’s multipath approach to carbon neutrality, which commits to offering a range of powertrains appropriate for specific customer needs, market conditions and local infrastructure.

Those electrified options helped further enhance the RAV4 driving experience, adding the calm serenity of hybrid as well as the additional performance of increasingly powerful motors for even more responsive acceleration. Meanwhile, through the innovative use of new platforms, as well as updated suspension technology, Toyota has created a more confident, stable, and rewarding ride with each generation.

Progress over the last 30 years has gone beyond performance and efficiency to enhance practicality as well. Generous luggage capacity – when the rear seats are in use or folded down for extra space – makes the RAV4 a capable partner, while an increasingly roomy, welcoming interior, has been enhanced with each generation by the latest in onboard multimedia systems.

The RAV4 has always put the safety occupants and other road users as a priority. As part of Toyota’s commitment to democratise advanced safety equipment, over the years the latest Toyota Safety Sense systems have been available on RAV4 models, helping drivers avoid a wider range of common road accident risks.

By staying true to its bold original philosophy and anticipating to the changing needs of customers, over its 30 years so far, the RAV4 has become an automotive icon and a sales success story across the world. It was the best-selling SUV globally in 2018 and 2019, and it reached the milestone of 14 million by the end of 2023 globally, including more than 2,5 million in Europe. Hybrid electric or plug-in hybrid powertrains now account for a remarkable 91% of new RAV4 sales in Europe, where the biggest markets are France, Italy, Poland, Spain and the UK.

The beginning

The ideas behind the RAV4 (Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive) were first expressed in the RAV-FOUR concept car at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show, indicating Toyota’s interest in creating a compact all-wheel drive model. This was just a design study, with none of the detail required for an actual development model, but it gained an enthusiastic welcome from the public. In 1991, the project was given the green light and development work began.

First generation, 1994 – 2000

Toyota's designers created a bold, fun new look for the original RAV4, breaking with convention by giving it eye-catching curves and unique lines. A rear mounted spare wheel hinted at the RAV4’s off-road capabilities but the fresh new style was well suited to both rural and urban settings. In its original form, the RAV4 was a compact two- or three-door model, measuring just 3.69 m long. Power came from a 129 DIN hp 2.0-litre petrol engine, mounted transversely, while the transmission provided permanent all-wheel drive. Innovations that were destined to become the norm included a lightweight monocoque body and independent rear suspension. The RAV4’s high driving position provided greater visibility while its compact size made it easy to manoeuvre. Its nimble handling and passenger comfort were more like a hatchback than an AWD vehicle. In 1996, the range was expanded to include a five-door version (measuring 4.1 m long) and the option of front two-wheel drive while a three-door soft-top followed. In 1997, a front-wheel-drive battery electric (BEV) version went on sale in selected markets. It was capable of a modest 45 kW (63 DIN hp), with nickel-metal hydride batteries installed under the floor, and had an estimated range of approximately 200 km.

Second generation, 2000 – 2006

A new millennium brought a second generation RAV4, developed with the benefit of experience gained from its ground-breaking introduction. A new platform, new suspension and full-time AWD created an energetic but comfortable ride both on road and off while interior comfort was enhanced by a more premium feel. New packaging, a longer seat sliding range and various rear seat configurations created a functional and comfortable cabin. A step towards sustainability came thanks to extensive use of easily-recycled Toyota Super Olefin Polymer (TSOP) and recycled sound-proofing products. Both three and five-door versions were slightly longer, 5.5 cm and 4 cm respectively. Two petrol engines were offered: 123 DIN hp 1.8 litre and 150 DIN hp 2.0 litre units. The full-time AWD adopted a centre limited-slip differential, while customers could specify a Torsen rear differential as a factory option. In 2001, diesel power was offered in the RAV4 for the first time via a 2.0 litre D-4D direct injection unit with 116 DIN hp.

Third generation, 2006 – 2012

For its third generation, the RAV4 grew and evolved, taking on a new, more sophisticated appearance. The new RAV4 became exclusively a five-door vehicle, reflecting changes in customer preferences and requirements. Based on an all-new platform for its third generation, the new model measured 19 cm longer overall, while a long-wheelbase version was also manufactured for sale in the United States and other markets. The model marked the debut of a new Toyota all-wheel drive system with an electronically controlled coupling that operated automatically, according to the vehicle’s speed, throttle operation, steering angle, and G-forces. The RAV4’s handling capabilities were further developed with the first application of Downhill Assist Control and Hill-start Assist Control. Engine choice was extended as well, with 2.0, 2.4, 2.5 and 3.5 litre petrol units, plus a new 2.2 litre diesel.

Fourth generation, 2013 – 2018

The fourth generation RAV4 saw a standard wheelbase for the vehicle globally and the vehicle’s length grew again, by 23.5 cm, which contributed to 47 per cent more luggage room compared to its predecessor. All-new suspension was designed to enhance ride comfort and driver engagement without sacrificing stability. More advanced AWD technology was introduced with the new intelligent Dynamic Torque Control system, and the addition of two new functions: cornering control and a sport driving mode. The powertrain choice originally consisted of 2.0 and 2.5-litre petrol and 2.0 and 2.2-litre diesel engines but in 2016, the RAV4 underwent its biggest change yet. A full hybrid electric version, Toyota’s first hybrid compact SUV, was introduced for the first time, offering total system power of 197 DIN hp with E-Four electronic all-wheel drive. As well as delivering the performance drivers would expect from Europe’s most powerful RAV4 to date, the hybrid powertrain achieved class-leading fuel consumption – aided by superior aerodynamics – and low CO2 emissions.

Fifth generation, 2018 to date

The fifth generation was launched in Europe at the start of 2019 and a year later helped the RAV4 reach a global cumulative sales milestone of 10 million units. Powerful styling expressed the robust and capable qualities that have come to define the world’s best-selling SUV, communicating a “go anywhere” sense of fun and adventure. It was the first SUV to be built on a Toyota New Global Architecture platform, which achieved a low centre of gravity, light weight and a strong chassis for exceptional handling and stability. As an all-hybrid range in Western Europe, it adopted Toyota’s fourth generation hybrid technology, together with a new 2.5 litre Dynamic Force hybrid engine, which brought significant gains in terms of power, response and efficiency. In 2020, the fifth generation embraced further technical innovation with the introduction of the first RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, the most powerful and efficient RAV4 yet built, with 306 DIN hp, rapid acceleration plus exceptionally low CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.

GR SPORT (2023 to date)

The latest chapter in the RAV4 story is the new RAV4 GR SPORT, an addition to the range that comes with styling and equipment features that express sportiness and sophistication inspired by TOYOTA GAZOO Racing and its mission to create ever-better cars through motorsport. Sportier looks, 19-inch alloy wheels and exclusive design details are complemented by further improvements to the suspension. Retuned suspension, including new stiffer springs and shock absorber settings, enhance handling boost and offer a more engaging driving experience.

This new version will broaden the model’s market reach to people who want a vehicle that matches their love of life off the beaten track, while preserving the performance and efficiency benefits of Toyota’s hybrid electric technology.

The RAV4 ADVENTURE makes its intentions clear with its more purposeful front-end design. The new look, all-black grille has greater visual impact, with the Toyota emblem moving down from the leading edge of the bonnet to a central position on double horizontal bars that cross the centre of the unit. The vehicle’s commanding stance and SUV capability is amplified by setting the front fog lights in new black surrounds and fitting a bright silver-finished under-run.

The effect is enhanced by wider wheel arches and new 19-inch alloy wheels with a matt grey finish. At the rear there’s a matching silver under-run. The RAV4 ADVENTURE will also be offered with a unique bi-tone paintwork option,

combining a body in Urban Khaki with roof, front pillars and rear spoiler painted in Dynamic grey colour – a look that pays tribute to the signature light roof of Toyota’s classic FJ40 Land Cruiser.

In the cabin there’s a dedicated upholstery design for the seats, combining smooth, black synthetic leather with deeply quilted back and cushion sections, with contrasting orange contrast stitching. RAV4 ADVENTURE scuff plates are also fitted.

The RAV4 ADVENTURE is powered by Toyota’s fourth generation hybrid electric technology and is equipped as standard with intelligent all-wheel drive, provided by an additional compact electric motor on the rear axle. The efficient yet powerful Hybrid-powertrain, combining electrical motors and a 2.5-litres four-cylinder petrol engine – with one of the highest thermal efficiencies in the world for a serial production engine – delivers 222 horsepower. AWD-i also allows for (braked) loads of up to 1,650 kg to be towed.

The new model also adopts detail changes that are being introduced across the RAV4 range for 2022, including new projector-type LED headlights and LED front fog lights. A new 10-spoke alloy wheel design is featured on the hybrid electric and petrol-powered versions in bright silver for Mid grade and gloss black for Style. In the cabin the focus is on added comfort and convenience with new LED lighting, power adjustment for the front passenger seat, illuminated window control switches and new, USB-C ports suitable for charging phones and devices while on the move.

The latest changes maintain the momentum of the world’s best-selling SUV. In 1994, the original RAV4 created a new market for recreational SUVs with car-like agility, a breakthrough that has since earned it more than two million sales. Its spirit of innovation has been maintained as the first model in its segment to offer hybrid electric power; today the RAV4 Hybrid is also the top-selling electrified SUV.

European deliveries for the new Toyota RAV4 ADVENTURE and the refreshed RAV4 model range will begin in first quarter of 2022.

Its introduction strengthens and extends the appeal of the RAV4, the model which created the market for recreational SUVs and which has amassed more than 10 million worldwide sales.

Toyota has applied its leading hybrid technology expertise to create the RAV4 Plug-in, producing a vehicle that is not only powerful, but which also outperforms all its rivals in terms of low emissions and fuel economy. The model’s final homologation data indicates 22 g/m CO₂ and 1.0 l/100km (Combined WLTP cycle).

RAV4 operates as an authentic electric vehicle: EV running is its default mode, in which it can cover around up to 98 km in urban driving (City WLTP cycle) on a full battery charge, comfortably more than the average European daily commute, and reach speeds of 135 km/h, with no intervention from the hybrid powertrain.

When extra engine power is needed, the capability of the 2.5-litre Dynamic Force powerplant ensures efficiency remains class-leading. Battery charging is simple and safe, and can be accomplished in 2.5 hours using a 230 V/32 A connection. As standard, owners can use the MyT app to schedule and monitor battery charging remotely and also operate the air conditioning system to warm up or cool the cabin before setting off.

Beyond its sophisticated and effective powertrain technology, the RAV4 Plug-in retains all the qualities that have made the fifth generation RAV4 so successful since its launch in late 2018. This includes the dynamic benefits of the low centre of gravity and high body rigidity inherent in the Toyota GA-K vehicle platform. It also comes as standard with AWD-i intelligent all-wheel drive.

The RAV4 Plug-in is a complementary model to the RAV4 Hybrid, consolidating Toyota’s electrification programme.

1. PERFORMANCE AND TECHNOLOGY

With the new RAV4 Plug-in, Toyota has created a vehicle with a dual DNA: one that has strong and genuine EV capabilities but which can also operate with highly efficient hybrid electric power.

Toyota has drawn on its experience of engineering two generations of the Prius Plug-in and has adopted an incremental approach to add extra performance to the efficiency of the plug-in technology. This has produced what is the most powerful model in the RAV4 range and one which delivers best-in-class performance in its segment in terms of EV driving range, CO₂ emissions and fuel efficiency.

For the Prius Plug-in, the focus was on extending the EV driving range by using a larger high-voltage battery with the established 53 kW electric motor from the hybrid model. By contrast, RAV4 uses a more powerful motor together with a larger battery and inverter to gain significantly more drive power as well as the ability to cover much greater distances and travel at high speeds in EV mode.

Maximum output for the full powertrain, including the 2.5-litre Dynamic Force hybrid engine, is 306 DIN hp/225 kW – 38% more than the RAV4 Hybrid – enabling 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.0 seconds – 2.1 seconds faster than the hybrid. Drivability is improved, for example with 50% more power available at 60 km/h.

In EV mode, performance is comparable to a 2.0-litre petrol model, with 0-100 km/h acceleration in 10 seconds.

2.5-litre Dynamic Force engine

The RAV4 Plug-in’s hybrid engine is a higher output version of the 2.5-litre Dynamic Force unit featured in the hybrid model, benefiting from the higher electric power to return more power and an improved torque curve.

The 2,487 cm³, four-cylinder, 16-valve DOHC Atkinson cycle powerplant features Dual VVT-i intelligent intake (electrically controlled) and exhaust valve timing and D-4S direct/indirect fuel injection with multi-hole injectors. The long, 103.4 mm stroke and the high 14.0:1 compression ratio help gain higher output and fuel efficiency. Maximum power of 185 DIN hp/136 kW is delivered at 6,000 rpm compared to RAV4 Hybrid’s 178 DIN hp/131 kW at 5,700 rpm.

The hybrid system operates an automatic warm-up phase to help protect the petrol engine against excessive wear that might occur if it is called on to make regular cold starts when the vehicle is running at motorway speeds. Power is limited, then progressively increased. The driver is alerted to the warm-up status by the engine icon showing blue in the hybrid energy flow display.

New hybrid system

The new hybrid system delivers a class-leading combination of power and efficiency. With maximum output of 306 DIN hp/225 kW, the RAV4 Plug-in is the most powerful model in the RAV4 range and Toyota’s most powerful hybrid. At the same time, its efficiency is remarkable, with significant improvements on the levels achieved by the RAV4 Hybrid.

It is also unique in its class in offering an authentic EV drive. In fact, EV mode is the default: the hybrid engine will not intervene, giving the driver the freedom to cover around 75 km (WLTP cycle) and achieve speeds of up to 135 km/h – suitable for highway driving – with zero fuel consumption and zero tailpipe emissions. And under City WLTP cycle driving, the EV range can reach 98 km.

Depending of the battery state of charge (SOC), the vehicle will automatically switch to highly efficient hybrid operation. This is a key benefit derived from basing the plug-in system on Toyota’s highly efficient hybrid technology.

Hybrid system upgrades

Toyota has developed a more powerful hybrid system for the RAV4 Plug-in, using the compact and lightweight components of the fourth generation hybrid technology featured in the RAV Hybrid, with detailed changes to optimise performance in the context of a plug-in hybrid vehicle.

There is a new lithium-ion battery, with energy capacity increased to 18.1 kWh. It contains 96 cells and has a rated voltage of 355.2 V. An increased current allows for more power: maximum output is thus significantly higher than from the unit in the RAV4 Hybrid.

The battery is located beneath the vehicle floor, which helps lower the centre of gravity and avoids intrusion in the load space or cabin. The cells are cooled using refrigerant from the vehicle’s air conditioning system, which also helps maintain the car’s EV performance.

There is a specific change to the power control unit, too. Adding a boost converter has increased the current so that more power can be drawn from the high-voltage battery. The DC-DC converter has been made smaller, quieter and more efficient, and has better cooling performance. It is positioned beneath the rear sets, taking up less cabin space.

The front electric motor produces 134 kW (compared to 88 kW in RAV4 Hybrid); the rear motor’s output is unchanged at 40 kW. With increased support from the electric motor, the hybrid engine is able to run at low revs. This contributes to the RAV4 Plug-in’s superior noise and vibration levels (further details below).

Drive modes

The RAV4 Plug-in has four different operating modes for its plug-in hybrid system:

• EV (electric vehicle) mode – the default mode
• HV (hybrid vehicle) mode
• Auto HV/EV mode
• Charging mode

It operates by default as an electric vehicle (EV), running in EV priority mode, and will continue to run purely on its electric power, even with hard use of the accelerator pedal. When the limit of EV driving range is reached in EV mode, the vehicle automatically switches to HV mode.

The driver has the flexibility of using HV mode to start their journey, switching to EV driving to maximise efficiency when necessary, for example, when entering an urban area.

In Auto EV/HV mode, the hybrid system will automatically come into play when extra power is required, for example under sharp, sudden acceleration, EV mode being restored immediately after.

Battery charging mode helps restore the level of battery charge when the level is too low for EV operation, drawing power generation by the engine.

The sequential shiftmatic system allows the driver to use the paddle shifts on the steering wheel to gain engine braking. Further assistance is provided by Deceleration Assist Control which automatically increase drive motor deceleration torque when downhill braking is detected. This makes for a smoother drive with less use of the brakes.

Acceleration performance

The power of the plug-in hybrid system delivers a strong feeling of acceleration when driving in HV mode or auto EV/HV mode. The engine’s responsiveness and the higher output from the high-voltage battery give quick performance, with nought to 100 km/h covered in just six seconds.

The control system determines whether the driver wants a smooth, linear increase in speed, or immediate, peak response. In Sport mode, the non-linear performance gives a feeling of more immediate response to increase the level of driving pleasure.

Noise, vibration and quietness

Numerous measures have been taken to reduce noise and vibration levels experienced in the cabin and achieve quiet performance from the plug-in hybrid system.

For example, the transaxle is designed so there is less resonance from the gears. The gears themselves have polished tooth surfaces for smoother and quieter operation. A damper system reduces shock and rattle on start-up, as well as fluctuations in torque in constant-speed driving.

As explained in the Performance and Technology section above, there is less noise from the hybrid engine as it can run at lower revs compared to the RAV4 Hybrid. Noise and vibration are also suppressed by additional insulation in the wing linings and front pillars and the use of acoustic glass for the windscreen and front side windows.

Air conditioning system with heat pump

The RAV4 Plug-in’s air conditioning system operates with efficiency while still ensuring cabin comfort, even when the vehicle is in EV mode.

It uses a pump that draws thermal energy from the air outside the car to heat the cabin, so running the air conditioning has less impact on the car’s EV driving range.

The system’s efficient design includes S-FLOW control which directs heating and ventilation only to seats which are occupied – driver, front passenger and the rear seats. Performance is adjusted according to the temperature selected, the ambient temperature, cabin temperature and the amount of sunlight. Power is also saved with an “off” setting for the dehumidifier, disabling the function when it would have no effect on window misting, odours or cabin comfort.

2. DRIVING PLEASURE

The RAV4 Plug-in’s dynamic character builds on the essential strengths of its GA-K platform by taking advantage of an even lower centre of gravity.

The platform is already notable for the low centre of gravity it secures for the RAV4 Hybrid, but thanks to the lay-out of the powertrain and, in particular, the location of the high-voltage battery beneath the floor, the centre of gravity has been lowered. This strengthens the vehicle’s handling and stability and adds to its fun-to-drive quality.

The GA-K platform also adds the benefits of light weight and high body rigidity, underpinning the RAV4’s “confident and natural” drive. It takes uneven surfaces in its stride, communicating stability, and responds naturally to the driver’s inputs.

The RAV4 Plug-in uses the same double wishbone rear suspension as the hybrid model, tuned for ride comfort. Because of the low centre of gravity and high body rigidity, the suspension does not have to be made stiffer to achieve the desired dynamic performance.

Intelligent electric all-wheel drive

All versions of the RAV4 Plug-in are equipped with AWD-i, Toyota’s intelligent electric all-wheel drive system, as featured on the RAV4 Hybrid. Compact and lightweight, AWD-i uses a 40 kW electric motor on the rear axle, giving the car the all-wheel drive performance expected of an SUV, but with superior fuel efficiency compared to a mechanical system. It operates equally when the vehicle is in its default EV mode, or when running in HV mode, with support when required from the hybrid engine.

The front/rear torque ratio is automatically optimised according to driving conditions, giving better handling and stability in slippery conditions and off-road driving, keeping the plug-in hybrid faithful to the RAV4’s essential “drive on any road” character.

Trail Mode

The RAV4 Plug-in reinforces its all-wheel drive performance with Trail Mode, an automatic locking system for the limited-slip differential that the driver can engage using a dashboard control. This ensures the best possible grip on slippery and loose surfaces and can help the driver negotiate more challenging off-road conditions. For example, if one wheel loses contact with the ground, Trail Mode will brake the spinning wheel and direct drive torque to the grounded wheel to gain traction, while also automatically adjusting the throttle response and transmission shift pattern.

Drive modes

The driver can switch between NORMAL, ECO and SPORT driving modes, adjusting throttle performance to suit their preference, or the driving conditions (SPORT mode adapts both the car’s acceleration and deceleration). This selection can be made in any of the four hybrid modes, as detailed in the Performance and Technology chapter above.

3. DESIGN AND PACKAGING

Toyota has ensured that the RAV4 Plug-in’s new hybrid system is packaged without compromising comfort, space and utility in both the cabin and the load compartment.

The new model shares the same external dimensions as the RAV4 Hybrid and its powertrain is designed so that it does not intrude into the cabin. There is just a small decrease in the load space capacity, with the floor being raised by 35 mm. At 520 litres, the volume remains competitive with other models in the segment.

The boot floor is flat and has an additional storage space for the charging cable beneath the deck board. The load surface remains flat when the rear seats (divided 60:40) are folded, and a flush joint with the rear finish plate makes it easy to slide heavy items into place.

With no awkward intrusions in the side of the load area, the space is practical for carrying large items. There is room for four golf bags or two 77-litre suitcases. Towing capacity is a maximum 1.5 tonnes with a braked trailer, and there is no reduction in the size of the fuel tank, its 55-litre capacity giving the vehicle an exceptional cruising range.

Exterior design

Externally, only a few small details distinguish the RAV4 Plug-in from its hybrid sibling, reflecting its “refined sports” character. There is a metal-look finish to the lower front moulding and rear garnish above the licence plate, dark chrome detailing in the headlight units and a dark plating finish for the front grille. The rear skid plate is painted black. The charging point is concealed beneath a flap on the rear right-wing.

The RAV4 Plug-in can be fitted with larger, 19-inch wheels and larger tyres. Standard on Style grade, these have a five-double-spoke design with a contrast bright machined and black finish. The Mid grade’s 18-inch rims have a machined/dark grey five-spoke design.

The introduction of the plug-in model introduces a new body colour to the RAV4 Range, Emotional Red.

Interior design

The spacious cabin is fitted with sports seats, upholstered in dark grey cloth with contrast red stitching in the Mid grade model. The Style version has a striking two-tone red and dark grey combination of fabric and synthetic leather as standard, with the option of genuine leather with horizontal red quilting in the seatbacks and a contrast vertical red ribbon detail in the shoulder section.

The front seats have integrated heating and power adjustment and lumbar support for the driver’s seat as standard. The rear seats are also heated and the front seat ventilation and power adjustment for the front passenger seat are standard on Style+ grade.

In the combimeter in the driver’s instrument display, the water temperature indicator has been replaced with a battery level display. Specific plug-in hybrid vehicle content has also been added to the multi-information display.

In other respects, the quality and convenience of the fifth generation RAV4 is preserved, including excellent all-round vision for the driver. The GA-K platform allows for a low hip point on the driver’s seat, contributing the sense of connection with vehicle and an engaging driving experience. A generous range of seat and steering wheel adjustment makes it easy for drivers to find just the right position at the wheel.

Access to the rear seats is made easy with wide-opening rear doors and a reduced distance between the hip point and sill. Spacious footwells and air vents add to the comfort.

Equipment features

The RAV4 Plug-in introduces new equipment features and options that meet the demands of today’s customers for more sophisticated connectivity, comfort and convenience.

Notably, a 230 V/150 W power outlet is provided as standard. This can be used to power mobile devices, without having to worry about the impact on battery performance – for example running speakers for a tailgate party. Home electric appliances of 150 W or less can also be connected, for example in an emergency during a domestic power outage. There are also 12V sockets in the cabin and load space and Aux/USB sockets for connecting smartphones and music players.

Other standard features include the latest Toyota multimedia system, with smartphone integration using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and illuminated power switches in the door panels. The key fob includes a remote control for the vehicle’s air conditioning system, operated via the MyT app. Full details are given in the Connected Car chapter below.

The Style grade version of the RAV4 Plug-in has a nine-inch display audio mounted prominently on the centre console (an option for the Mid grade) and 19-inch alloy wheels. A colour head-up display is available for both model grades.

Toyota Safety Sense

As standard, the new RAV4 Plug-in benefits from the latest generation Toyota Safety Sense active safety and driver assistance systems. Designed to reduce the risk of some of the most common accidents, they alert the driver to hazards and, if necessary, provide braking and steering support to help avoid an impact, or reduce the severity if a collision is unavoidable.

In addition to detecting vehicles on the road ahead, the Pre-Collision System (PCS) can also recognise pedestrians in both day and night-time driving, and cyclists during daylight. The Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) is also more sophisticated in its operation, working with the Road Sign Assist (RSA) to automatically reset vehicle speed in line with changes in the speed limit.

The combination of Lane Departure Alert and Lane Tracing Assist helps keep the RAV4 centred in its traffic lane, providing a sound alert or steering wheel vibration if it detects deviation without the turn indicators being used, then applying steering assistance if necessary to help return the vehicle to its correct path. Recognition and control performance have been improved so that assistance is also provided through gentle bends, as well as on straight highway sections. As well as lane markings on the road surface, Lane Departure Alert can also recognise road margins.

4. SAFE AND EFFICIENT CHARGING OPTIONS

Ease of charging is a key concern for any electric vehicle. Toyota RAV4 Plug-in provides safe and efficient options that allow a full battery recharge in just two-and-a-half hours.

The vehicle is equipped with an on-board fast-charger that can support up to 6.6 kW. without compromising the battery’s durability. As standard, it is supplied with a 7.5 m Type 2 Mode 2 cable for connection to 10 A home power supply, which enables a recharge in 7.5 hours.

The charging socket on the vehicle is located on the rear right wing with a flap that automatically locks and unlocks with the vehicle doors. The inlet has heat protection and an indicator light to show when charging is in progress and completed.

For optimum speed of recharging and safety, Toyota recommends the combination of a Type 2 Mode 3 32 A cable and a wallbox unit. With this compact, integrated set-up, recharging can be accomplished in about 2.5 hours, with no impact on the customer’s domestic power supply.

Toyota will also be making a “connected” wallbox system available that can be used by customers with different cars, identified by RFiD card recognition. The unit’s connectivity will also link to services such as billing and charging history, and enable remote software updates, via the MyT app.

The design of these Toyota products is future-proofed. They are all 22 kW units that will be able to serve vehicles introduced with more powerful on-board chargers.

5. A CONNECTED CAR

The RAV4 Plug-in is the first Toyota model to give the driver remote control of vehicle functions, including the air conditioning system, via the MyT customers’ app.

Toyota’s research confirms that customers choosing to buy plug-in hybrid electric vehicles expect app-based access to their vehicle, and it has made remote functions for battery management, charging and on-board comfort part of the RAV4 Plug-in’s standard specification.

Remote charging control

The owner can schedule the charging time for the vehicle, for example setting the start time to take advantage of off-peak energy tariffs.

The MyT app also allows them to check the status of the vehicle’s battery, the current driving range and the time remaining for complete charge, information that’s particularly useful when the vehicle is connected to a public charging point. Alerts can be received to warn of a low battery charge level or any problems with the charging process.

Comfort control

The new system also allows the owner to start the car’s heating or ventilation before they get behind the wheel. A defrost setting can clear screens and warm the car so no time is wasted when leaving the house; likewise, the cabin can be cooled down ready for departure on a hot day.

The system will run for up to 20 minutes, so operation can be synchronised with the time the owner wants to begin their journey.

These functions are in addition to established MyT app services, such as sending navigation destinations to the vehicle, car-to-door directions for the last part of a journey, find-my-car location; and driving analytics. Toyota will be rolling out further services in the future to increase the connected quality of its vehicles, true to its ambition to help provide mobility for all.

The deep Midnight Black paint finish throws the angles and facets of the bodywork into sharp relief, an effect heightened by the use of matching black styling elements throughout. The front grille and lower grille, lower bumpers, door mirror casings skid plates, rear garnish and spoiler are all-black, while the 19-inch alloy wheels also have a glossy black finish. Even the intelligent Clearance Sonars are painted black, so the only interruption in the all-black appearance is the chrome Toyota emblem in the centre of the car’s front end.

In the cabin, the seats are upholstered in a high-quality black synthetic leather with grey stitching. This combines with the black headlining and interior trim (part of the regular RAV4 Style grade specification) to create a Striking cabin ambience.

The standard and optional equipment features match the current RAV4 Style grade and include, among others, intelligent parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, digital rear-view mirror, a nine-speaker JBL premium audio system with DAB and a wireless phone charger. Toyota Safety Sense and smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both provided as standard.

The new RAV4 Hybrid Black Edition is available to order (now) with deliveries to customers from October 2020, according to local market.

As a global Toyota model, the RAV4 has gone from strength to strength since its launch. Having originated the market segment for new kind of compact, agile, recreational SUV, it has continued to set standards, with sales reaching new heights.

In 2019, the RAV4 was not only the world’s best-selling SUV, it was also the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is by far its strongest market, with more than half a million annual sales (535,000 in 2019), followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000).

In Europe, the RAV4’s sales tally has reached more than two million since 1994, while the latest, fifth generation model, introduced in early 2019, has set a new annual record of over 130,000 units.

This year the RAV4 range will mark an important evolution with the launch of the new RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, offering customers even greater potential for all-electric driving with zero emissions and zero fuel consumption.

Initial production estimates were for 4,500 sales a month, but when 8.000 orders were taken in the first month alone, production volumes were doubled. RAV4 paved the way for a whole new SUV segment that has not stopped growing since: more than a quarter of a century on from its debut, RAV4 was the world’s best-selling SUV in 2018 and 2019, and in 2019 was the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. Toyota’s policy of constant improvement in line with the changing tastes and demands of motorists has ensured the RAV4 continues to set standards for quality, performance and practicality.

The beginning

The ideas behind the RAV4 (Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive) were first expressed in the RAV-FOUR concept car at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show, indicating Toyota’s interest in creating a compact all-wheel drive model. This was just a design study, with none of the detail required for an actual development model, but it gained an enthusiastic welcome from the public. In 1991, the project was given the green light and development work began.

New concept, new challenges

The Chief Engineer for the RAV4 project, Masakatsu Nonaka, found that it wasn’t easy to convince other Toyota departments that a new mass-production car should be created to be sold in a market segment that didn’t yet exist. The term “Sports Utility Vehicle” was still unknown and there were many within Toyota who simply couldn’t grasp the concept of such a compact 4x4. In fact, internal resistance even stalled the project at one point, but support from an unexpected quarter gave it new life.

Toyota’s Japanese and European sales divisions, being in close contact with market, believed the time was right for this type of car. Together they put the project back on track, and they were proven right: very soon after the RAV4’s launch it was being widely acclaimed as a new trendsetter.

From niche model to global car

The compact SUV market that Toyota created quickly flourished. Toyota sold around 53,000 RAV4 in 1994, doubling, then tripling the total in the next two years. Sales continued to grow with each successive generation, even as almost every competitor manufacturer brought their own models to the market. In 2019, global RAV4 sales were more than 17 times the total achieved in the model’s first year.

This enduring success owes much to Toyota’s constant improvement of the product. With each new generation, it has listened to the comments of motorists and adapted the vehicle’s size, functionality, performance and styling to meet the market’s changing preferences and requirements.

For example, the third generation saw the spare wheel moved from its position on the back door, giving the car a more sophisticated appearance. And with the fourth generation, the wheelbase was standardised worldwide. The three-door model had been discontinued earlier so that now RAV4 was exclusively a five-door vehicle and more spacious than ever before.

Technical excellence

Toyota also kept RAV4 technically advanced, introducing new vehicle platforms and developing intelligent all-wheel drive systems that combined better handling with more efficient performance, both on-road and off. Even during the lifetime of the first generation model, Toyota recognised that all-wheel drive was not a requirement for all customers and so expanded the model’s appeal with the option of two/front-wheel drive.

Where powertrains were concerned, the choice was tailored to suit the demands of different world markets, including both gasoline and diesel units, up to 3.5-litre capacity. Again, the focus was on efficiency and performance appropriate to the vehicle’s role as an urban SUV, equipped to accommodate families, or as an ideal partner for people who enjoy active lifestyles.

The first hybrid

In 2016, Toyota presented the first RAV4 Hybrid, a vehicle that preserved all the qualities of the fourth generation model but added the benefits of a full hybrid electric powertrain. As the first full hybrid in its segment in Europe, it strengthened the appeal of the RAV4 with class-leading fuel economy and emissions, and smooth powerful performance – including a highly efficient electric all-wheel drive system.

The RAV4 today

The current, fifth generation RAV4 was launched in Europe in 2019 - principally as a hybrid in western European markets. It is the first SUV to be built on Toyota’s GA-K modular platform, which, with a low centre of gravity and significantly greater body rigidity, contributes to superior handling, ride comfort, a spacious interior and class-leading load space. The new platform also gave the design team more freedom to create an eye-catching design with lower roof and hood lines.

The hybrid system features a new 2.5-litre petrol hybrid Dynamic Force engine, offering 218 DIN hp in front-wheel drive form and 222 DIN hp with all-wheel drive, delivering step-changes in power, responsiveness and class-leading efficiency.

The RAV4’s intelligent all-wheel drive system (AWD-i) has been comprehensively improved to achieve a “drive on any road” capability, with much stronger performance in challenging conditions and secure handling on slippery surfaces.

The next chapter- the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid

Building on RAV4’s success as a pioneer of hybrid power among SUVs, Toyota will extend the benefits of the technology with the introduction of the new RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid during the second half of 2020. This will be a new flagship vehicle for its hybrid line-up that promises to be not only more powerful but also more emissions and fuel-efficient than any other in its class.

The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid will offer customers a best-of-both-worlds solution. It features Toyota’s latest hybrid-electric vehicle technology, with higher power and better driving dynamics, and also has a genuine pure electric EV driving capability, free from concerns about driving range or the need to stop to recharge the battery.

Toyota has harnessed the boost in performance electric power can deliver to achieve a significant increase in output compared to the standard RAV4 Hybrid, deploying a new, high-capacity lithium-ion battery and adding an enhanced boost converter to the hybrid system’s power control unit. The 2.5-litre Hybrid Dynamic Force petrol engine is based on the unit featured in the regular RAV4 Hybrid, with improvements to meet the performance requirements of the plug-in hybrid system.

With full system output of 306 DIN hp/225 kW*, it has the potential to deliver acceleration from rest to 100 km/h in around just six seconds*, while Toyota’s pre-homologation, WLTP-standard data indicates class-leading low CO₂ output.

The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid will also have a greater driving range in electric EV mode, with zero fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. The driver will be able to switch seamlessly from hybrid to pure EV driving, with the potential to cover greater distances than any competitor plug-in hybrid SUV on electric power (battery charge and driving conditions permitting), well beyond the 50 km average European daily commuting distance. Moreover, speeds up to 135 km/h can be reached without any intervention from the internal combustion engine, even under full acceleration.

TOYOTA RAV4: FIVE GENERATIONS OF INNOVATION AND ACHIEVEMENT

First generation, 1994 – 2000

The RAV4 made its debut in 1994 as the world’s first urban SUV, pioneering a new market segment that was destined to become central to the automotive world. In its original form it was a three-door model with compact proportions, measuring just 3.69m long. Power came from a 129 DIN hp 2.0-litre petrol engine, mounted transversely, while the transmission provided permanent all-wheel drive, but without the low-ratio transfer box found in conventional, rugged SUVs. Other innovations that were destined to become the norm included a lightweight monocoque body and independent rear suspension. The RAV4’s compact size and high driving position made it easy to manoeuvre, while its nimble handling and passenger comfort were more akin to a hatchback than an AWD vehicle. In 1996 the range was expanded to include a five-door version (measuring 4.1m long) and the option of (front) two-wheel drive. A three-door soft-top followed and, pushing innovation once again, an EV battery electric model was produced in limited numbers between 1997 and 2000.

Second generation, 2000 – 2006

Entering its second generation with the turn of the millennium, the RAV4 was developed the benefit of the experience Toyota had gained from its ground-breaking introduction. Constructed on a new platform, both three and five-door versions were slightly longer - +5.5 and +4cm respectively. Two petrol engines were offered: 123 DIN hp 1.8-litre and 150 DIN hp 2.0-litre units. The full-time AWD adopted a centre limited-slip differential, while customers could specify a Torsen rear differential as a factory option. In 2001, diesel power was offered in the RAV4 for the first time, a 2.0-litre D-4D direct injection unit with 116 DIN hp.

Third generation, 2006 – 2012

The RAV4 again benefited from an all-new platform for its third generation, which reached the market in 2006. The three-door body style was discontinued and the five-door grew significantly in size, reflecting changes in customer preferences and requirements. The new model measured 19cm longer overall, while a long-wheelbase version was also manufactured for sale in the USA and Russia. Engine choice was extended as well, with 2.0, 2.4, 2.5 and 3.5 (V6) petrol units, plus a new 2.2-litre diesel. The model also marked the debut of a new Toyota all-wheel drive system with an electronically controlled coupling that operated automatically, according to the vehicle’s speed, throttle operation, steering angle and G-forces. The RAV4’s handling capabilities were further developed with the first application of Downhill Assist Control and Hill-start Assist Control.

Fourth generation, 2013 – 2018

The fourth generation RAV4, introduced in 2013, saw Toyota adopt a standard wheelbase for all world markets, with the vehicle’s length growing again, by 23.5cm. The powertrain choice included 2.0 and 2.5-litre petrol and 2.0 and 2.2-litre diesel engines. More advanced AWD technology was introduced with the new intelligent Dynamic Torque Control system, and the addition of two new functions: cornering control and a sport driving mode. In 2016, the RAV4 underwent its most radical development yet, with the introduction of the first full hybrid electric version. Toyota’s first compact hybrid SUV offered total system power of197 DIN hp, giving seamless acceleration from 0-100 km/h in just 8.3 seconds, while returning class-leading fuel consumption of 4.9 l/100 km and CO₂ emissions from as low as 115 g/km.

Fifth generation, 2018 to date

The fifth generation RAV4 was revealed in 2018 and launched in Europe at the start of 2019. It was the first SUV to be built on a Toyota New Global Architecture platform, bringing fundamental benefits in terms of handling, safety and design. As an all-hybrid range in Western Europe, it adopted Toyota’s fourth generation hybrid technology, together with a new 2.5-litre Dynamic Force hybrid engine – a unit notable for its significant gains in terms of power, responsiveness and efficiency. As a result, its fuel economy and emissions are best-in-class. In 2020, the fifth generation will embrace further technical innovation with the introduction of the first RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid. This will be the most powerful RAV4 yet built, with 306 DIN hp and rapid acceleration, but at the same time delivering exceptionally low CO₂ emissions and fuel consumption.

This first plug-in hybrid-electric version of the RAV4 draws on more than 20 years of Toyota leadership in hybrid powertrain technology. It will sit at the pinnacle of the fifth generation RAV4 range, a model that has reaffirmed its historic status as one of Europe’s most popular SUVs with more than 130,000 customer orders since its launch early in 2019, including more than 115,000 hybrids (Western Europe).

The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid will offer customers a best-of-both-worlds solution. It features Toyota’s latest hybrid-electric vehicle technology, with higher power and better driving dynamics, and also has a genuine pure electric EV driving capability, free from concerns about driving range or the need to stop to recharge the battery.

Performance and efficiency

With the experience of developing two generations of its Prius Plug-in Hybrid model, Toyota is well-equipped to produce an effective new powertrain for the RAV4. With full system output of 306 DIN hp/225 kW*, it has the potential to deliver acceleration from rest to 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds*, outperforming any of its conventionally powered rivals. Moreover, it is also on course to deliver best-in-class CO₂ emissions and fuel economy: Toyota’s pre-homologation, WLTP-standard data indicates CO₂ output of less than 29 g/km*. These levels are unmatched by any current D-segment plug-in hybrid AWD SUV.

The new RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid is constructed on Toyota’s GA-K platform, with added dynamic benefits achieved by locating the hybrid battery beneath the floor. It is also equipped as standard with the Toyota’s AWD-i intelligent electric all-wheel drive system.

The result is not just rapid off-the-line acceleration: the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid has a greater driving range in electric EV mode, with zero petrol consumption and exhaust emissions.

With four driving modes available, the driver can switch seamlessly from hybrid to pure EV driving. This new EV mode enables the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid to cover more than 65 km* on electric power alone (battery charge and driving conditions permitting), further than any competitor plug-in hybrid SUV and beyond the 50 km average European daily commuting distance. Moreover, speeds up to 135 km/h can be reached without any intervention of the internal combustion engine, even under full acceleration.

Intelligent hybrid battery packaging

The compact dimensions of the lithium-ion battery allow it to be contained entirely beneath the vehicle floor. With minimal intrusion in the load space, cargo capacity is a generous 520 litres. The battery’s location low in the vehicle also helps give the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid a low centre of gravity, enhancing handling stability and ride comfort.

High-efficiency heat pump air conditioning

In its scrutiny of every detail that can contribute to the overall efficient performance of the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, Toyota adopted the heat pump air conditioning system it introduced as a world-first in the current, second generation Prius Plug-in Hybrid, adapting it specifically for use in the new SUV with a hot water circuit – the same as that used in the RAV4 Hybrid. In addition, the battery is cooled by the refrigerant of the air conditioning system.

This system is far more efficient than engine heating or high-powered electric heaters, absorbing heat from the air outside the vehicle to warm the cabin.

Refined Sport design

Styling details for the exterior and the cabin demonstrate a more Refined Sport look for the mid-size SUV. At the front there is a dark plating for the dedicated grille mesh and frame and headlight extensions, together with a new metallic finish on the lower bumper moulding that emphasises the width and strength of the vehicle’s stance. New 18 and 19-inch wheel designs combine contrasting bright machined and grey or black finishes, while at the rear there is a metal-like finish for the garnish beneath the screen and black plating for the under-run.

In the cabin the focus is on new upholstery designs with a sporty feel, with ribbed patterns with contrast red detailing. Quilted black leather seats will also be available with a striking red ribbon detail. The centre console features a nine-inch multimedia touchscreen display – the largest in any RAV4 model – for clear and easy control of the car’s entertainment, information and connectivity functions.

Premium equipment specifications

Equipment specifications reflect the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid’s flagship status. According to grade, features and options will include 19-inch alloy wheels, heated front and rear seats, a 230 V power outlet in the cabin, a bi-tone exterior paint finish, power tailgate with hands-free kick sensor, panoramic roof, head-up display, nine-inch display audio system and the latest Toyota multimedia package with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

It will sit at the pinnacle of the fifth generation RAV4 range, a model that has reaffirmed its historic status as one of Europe’s most popular SUVs with more than 120,000 customers orders since its launch earlier this year, including more than 105,000 hybrids (Western Europe).

The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid’s position as both the top of RAV4 range and the flagship of Toyota’s current hybrid-electric vehicle range is founded on its combination of high power and performance, exceptional efficiency, the dynamic excellence of its GA-K platform and the on and off-road handling capabilities provided by its standard AWD-i intelligent electric all-wheel drive system.

With the experience of developing two generations of its Prius Plug-in Hybrid model, Toyota is well-equipped to produce its impressive new powertrain for the RAV4. With full system output of 306 DIN hp/225 kW*, this has the potential to deliver acceleration from rest to 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds*, outperforming any of its conventionally powered rivals. Moreover, it is also on course to deliver best-in-class CO₂ emissions and fuel economy: Toyota’s pre-homologation, WLTP-standard data indicates CO₂ output of less than 30 g/km*. These levels are unmatched by any current D-segment plug-in hybrid AWD SUV.

Toyota has harnessed the boost in performance electric power can deliver to achieve a significant increase in output compared to the standard RAV4 Hybrid. It has developed a new, high-capacity lithium-ion battery and added a boost converter to the hybrid system’s power control unit. The 2.5-litre Hybrid Dynamic Force petrol engine is the same unit as featured in the regular RAV4 Hybrid,

The Corolla and RAV4 achieved excellent results in all 4 Euro NCAP categories (see table below).

The Toyota Corolla’s and RAV4’s crash test performance reflect the fundamental strength of their Toyota New Global Architecture-based platform and body, which make good use of strategic reinforcements and use of high-strength steels to absorb and channel impact forces away from the cabin.

As part of Toyota’s commitment to democratise advanced safety equipment, the new second generation of Toyota Safety Sense is fitted as standard across the full Corolla and RAV4 ranges. This safety pack includes a Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian and cyclist Recognition, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with steering control, Automatic High Beam (AHB) and Road Sign Assist (RSA).

The Corolla’s and RAV4’s Pre-Collision System scored maximum points in the tests at low, city speeds, with collisions being avoided at all test speeds. Also at highway speeds, Toyota Safety Sense revealed good performance. When approaching a slower-moving car, collision was avoided at all test speeds. And when approaching a stationary car, or a decelerating car, collision was avoided in most cases and mitigated in others.

The system’s pedestrian and cyclist recognition function also showed good performance as collisions with the pedestrian and cyclist target were avoided in all condition tests, at day time and night time.

This achievement is a clear testimony of Toyota’s commitment to car safety. Toyota puts safety at the heart of its commitment to building ever-better cars, ensuring that the benefits of advanced technologies are not limited to high-end, high-specification models, but are made available across the board.

With its low centre of gravity and significantly increased body rigidity, the new RAV4’s platform directly contributes to superior handling, ride comfort, a spacious interior, class-leading load space (580 litres VDA with seats in place) and the freedom to produce a strong, eye-catching design with lower roof and hood lines and higher ground clearance. As well as providing more space and comfort, the cabin displays exceptional quality and finish throughout.

The new RAV4 remains unique its class in offering customers a self-charging, hybrid powertrain – the choice of an overwhelming majority of customers for the model in Western Europe (85 per cent in 2018). The new 2.5-litre petrol hybrid Dynamic Force, offering 218 DIN hp in front-wheel drive form and 222 DIN hp with all-wheel drive, will strengthen customer appeal, delivering step-changes in power, responsiveness and efficiency, with best-in-class fuel economy and emissions levels.

At the same time, all-wheel drive systems have been comprehensively improved to achieve a “drive on any road” capability. The new RAV4 Hybrid’s electric AWD-i system has been re-engineered and enhanced to provide much stronger performance in challenging conditionsand secure handling on slippery surfaces.

The new RAV4 is also the first Toyota to benefit from additional Toyota Safety Sense features that extend the use of advanced technologies to help prevent accidents and provide greater driver assistance, including systems that introduce a degree of automated driving.

RAV4 HERITAGE AND MARKET SUCCESS

The Toyota RAV4 started out as a pioneering niche model but has gone from strength to strength to become one of the world’s best-selling vehicles. It can be credited with creating a whole new market segment, one in which today every major manufacturer is represented.

The model now sits at the heart of Toyota’s global business. Cumulative worldwide sales across four generations since 1994 have reached more than 8.5* million, while in 2017, RAV4 was the world’s best-selling SUV and fourth best-selling model overall, with 810,953 sales.

In Europe, high customer demand for SUVs has seen the market increase four-fold in the past four years (accounting for 22.7 per cent of the new car market) and annual sales are expected to reach more than five million by 2023. Sales volumes in the D-SUV segment remain stable, at around 1.5 million a year.

TOYOTA NEW GLOBAL ARCHITECTURE

GA-K PLATFORM 

The foundation of the new RAV4’s dynamic qualities is its all-new TNGA K platform.

This gives the car the core strengths of a low centre of gravity, light weight and a strong, rigid and balanced chassis that delivers exceptional handling, stability and driver rewards.

FOR THE CUSTOMER the new platform makes the car more fun to drive, while at the same time enabling great design inside and out, enhanced safety performance that gives greater peace of mind and greater comfort for everyone on board.

The lowest possible centre of gravity is achieved by making every component lighter and locating it lower down in the vehicle – everything from the engine to the seats in the cabin. The platform also allows for a 57 per cent increase in the RAV4’s body rigidity, which contributes to a stable, flat ride with superior handling.

The GA-K platform underpins the “confident and natural” driving quality Toyota has sought for the new model: “confident” in not reacting adversely to disturbances and communicating a sense of stability, and “natural” in its intuitive, natural response to the driver’s inputs. Beyond the benefits of the chassis itself, further detailed measures make important contributions to its overall quality, with Toyota’s top engineers leading the development of the new RAV4’s dynamic performance, fine-tuning its handling and driveability

For example, the design and location of the fuel tank have been changed to achieve better handling and stability. The tank is now located laterally in front of the rear axle so that its load is spread evenly between the wheels, supporting flat, stable performance. Optimum weight balance is not only achieved front-to-rear (51/49) but also left-to-right.

Response from the Electric Power Steering has been improved by moving the assist motor from the column to the rack. The result is more linear increase in steering input torque and less strain on the steering shaft, which communicates a better, more direct feel to the driver as the steering loads up, and gives more faithful line tracing through corners. Summer-specification tyres are used in place of the all-weather type, further adding to the precise driving quality and achieving top-class braking distances.

The RAV4’s GA-K platform also distinguishes itself in its use of a double wishbone rear suspension system. Thanks to the low centre of gravity and high body rigidity, the suspension does not have to be rendered stiffer to meet dynamic targets. Nonetheless, precise adjustments have been made to the rear suspension to focus on better ride comfort, including a more upright setting for the shock absorbers and optimisation of the locating point for the trailing arms.

Handling is thus agile, faithful and neutral, giving the driver confidence with accurate responses to the driver’s use of the steering wheel and throttle pedal and optimised shift patterns.

CONCEPT AND DESIGN

The TNGA GA-K platform was of great benefit to Toyota’s designers in their mission to give the new RAV4 a strong SUV character and styling that sets it apart from other models in its segment.

THE FACT THAT TNGA introduces so many standardised parts “under the skin” simplifies the development process, giving the designers more time and scope to create an all-new look, inside and out. The exterior lines and detailing in the cabin are influenced by regular, polygonal shapes, communicating strength and coherence.

The powerful design combines with the unique new self-charging hybrid powertrain to give the new RAV4 the stand-out qualities required to attract customers in a highly competitive marketplace, in particular conquest sales to people new to the model and the Toyota brand.

Key elements in generating this impact include raising the ground clearance, using large diameter wheels and making the car suitable for multiple types of use.

The exterior look is powerful and individual, with a solid form that extends from the front the vehicle along the sides to the rear, giving the sense of a strong mass and authentic SUV capabilities. At the front the emphasis is on width and strength with extra volume added to the lower bumper section. There is a similar effect at the rear where the horizontal line created by the tail lights and back window angles sharply downwards at each edge, drawing the eye towards the rear wheels and expressing the “polygon” influence on the design.

The cabin is characterised by high sensory quality throughout and precision execution. Soft-touch surfaces abound, including the dashboard and door panels. Consistent patterns, textures, colours and ambient lighting are applied, with symmetrical shapes and use of the polygon motif seen in the Toyota FT-AC (Future Toyota – Adventure Concept, premiered at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show) concept model. Switchgear is new, too, with cleanly integrated buttons and pleasingly tactile controls, such as the button/dial to adjust the air conditioning

The low-set instrument panel – a further benefit of the TNGA platform – has powerful horizontal lines that flow into the door panels, emphasising the cabin’s generous width and giving the driver a clearerview of the road ahead. A larger, open centre console between the front seats is in keeping with a welcoming, functional SUV interior. Special attention was paid to providing plenty of useful and easily accessible storage for the driver and front passenger.

The TNGA platform also helps secure impressive cabin space, best-in-class load space and all-round comfort. With all seats in place, the cargo area has a VDA capacity of 580 litres, 79 litres more than the previous generation RAV4 Hybrid. Reducing the front and rear overhangs by a combined 35 mm (-5 mm front, -30 mm rear) means the new model is shorter overall by 5 mm (4,600 mm) and retains its agilemanoeuvrability, yet the wheelbase has been increased by 30 mm (2,690 mm), securing a more spacious cabin.

To add to the new model’s purposeful, wide stance, overall width has grown by 10 mm (1,855 mm) and the front and rear treads have been increased. At the same time, overall height has been brought down by 10 mm.

ON-BOARD COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE

Securing better all-round visibility was a key consideration in the RAV4’s design process. The TNGA platform allows the hood to sit 15 mm lower, adding two degrees to the driver’s forward field of vision, and the external mirrors have been moved to a lower position on the front doors. The front pillars have been made slimmer, the belt line has been lowered and the rearward view from the driver’s seat has been improved by enlarging the rear side windows and making a new digital rear-view mirror available (further details in the Equipment section).

The driver’s comfort and sense of control when at the wheel are important considerations, and the new TNGA chassis allows for a more engaging driving position, without detracting from the commanding view of the road that’s a defining quality of SUVs. The driver’s hip point has been lowered by 15 mm and the range of steering wheel adjustment has been increased by 50 per cent. This, together with a generousseat adjustment range and precise positioning of the pedals and arm rest, ensures more customers are able to find their ideal position when driving.

Comfort for rear seat passengers has been improved with 40 mm addedto the left/right couple distance, more spacious rear footwells and two air vents. By increasing the opening angle of the rear doors and reducing the distance from the hip point to the rocker panel, getting into and out of the vehicle and access to child seats has been made easier.

The load space behind the rear seats has been made larger and more user-friendly, notably thanks to a fully flat floor and a length extended by 60 mm to secure best-in-class capacity, 79 litres more than in the previous, fourth generation RAV4. Flexibility is designed-in so that the space can easily be adapted to gain more cargo room when required: with the rear seats folded down, the new RAV4 can accommodate a 29-inch mountain bike without any wheels having to be removed.

There is a height-adjustable, two-level deck board that can be reversed when dirty items need to be carried. The rear seats have a 60:40 split-folding function and there are storage nets on each side of the boot. Clever details include a hand grip on the tailgate that can serve as a hanger and a power-operated tailgate with hands-free function.

POWERTRAINS AND PERFORMANCE

The new 2.5-litre Hybrid Dynamic Force combines fuel and emissions efficiency and quiet operation with more power and greater responsiveness.

THE FULL SYSTEM maximum output of 222 DIN hp/163 kW in the all-wheel drive model (218 DIN hp/160 kW with front-wheel drive) compares to 197 DIN hp/145 kW for the fourth generation model, signalling how Toyota’s latest self-charging hybrid technology is not lacking in strength; acceleration from rest to 100 km/h takes just 8.1 seconds.

The proposal of “power with no compromise” gives the new RAV4 a unique advantage in its class and, with the benefit of its improved performance, driveability and efficiency, this new hybrid is expected to account for an even greater proportion of sales. Toyota expects that this will rise from the current 85 per cent to 90 per cent for the new model in Western Europe. Nevertheless, a brand new 2.0-litre direct injection petrol engine has also been developed to meet requirements in other global markets. This engine will be available in selectedEuropean markets, with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions.

Toyota’s fourth generation self-charging hybrid system makes its debut in the new RAV4, delivering multiple benefits. Key components, including the power control unit (PCU) and the nickel metal-hydride battery are more compact and lighter in weight, and the transaxle and transmission have been engineered to reduce electrical and mechanical losses. The new battery pack is 11 per cent lighter than before and transmission losses have been reduced by 25 per cent compared to the previous system.

The system makes use of Toyota’s new 2.5-litre Hybrid Dynamic Force engine, a four-cylinder unit with direct and indirect injection that targets best-in-class fuel consumption and emissions for the new RAV4: combined cycle fuel economy is 4.4 l/100km* (AWD-i correlated NEDC), with CO₂emissions from as low as 100 g/km* (AWD-i correlated NEDC). Performance is also supported by a new transaxle structure with a pre-load differential. For the driver, the results are better acceleration from stationary, improved efficiency at higher speeds, overall smoother and more linear acceleration and better control when decelerating.

NEW 2.5-LITRE HYBRID DYNAMIC FORCE ENGINE

The 2.5-litre Hybrid Dynamic Force Engine is a completely new unit that makes significant advances on its predecessor, delivering a better balance between fuel economy and power and achieving world-class thermal efficiency. In the RAV4’s self-charging hybrid powertrain, its CO₂emissions are from just 100 g/km* (AWD-i with 17inch wheels), while maximum full system output is 218 DIN hp/160 kW for the FWD model and 222 DIN hp/163 kW with AWD-i.

The engine adopts the Atkinson cycle and features a longer stroke than its predecessor – 87.5 x 103.4 mm compared to 90.0 x 98.0. It also operates at a higher, 14.0:1 compression ratio (compared to 12.5:1 for the previous unit). It is equipped with D-4S direct and indirect fuel injection and intelligent variable valve-timing – electric VVT-iE for the intake and hydraulic VVT-i for the exhaust. The valve-timing range for both intake and exhaust has been increased.

A comprehensive range of engineering features destined to improve combustion and reduce friction losses has helped the new engine achieve high output, better fuel efficiency, low exhaust emissions and a high peak thermal efficiency of 41 per cent. The cylinder heads are designed to generate high tumble, with an enlarged valve included angle and laser-cladded valve seats. A variable cooling system with an electric water pump and electric thermostat is used to improve combustion by maintaining the required temperature. There is also a fully variable oil pump for efficient engine oil pressure management.

INTELLIGENT ALL-WHEEL DRIVE (AWD-i)

Toyota is introducing improvements to its intelligent all-wheel drive technology (AWD-i) in the new RAV4 to deliver enhanced performance, capabilities and control in all driving conditions, adding to the model’s “go anywhere” spirit and driving pleasure. Its impressive all-wheel drive performance on-road and off will further distinguish the new RAV4 among its competitors, with secure cornering performance and grip in all conditions.

RAV HYBRID WITH SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCED ELECTRIC AWD-i SYSTEM

The new RAV4 Hybrid is equipped with a significantly enhanced and more capable electric AWD-i system that comes with no penalties: it returns better fuel economy in urban driving, quieter performance at high speeds and better traction in slippery conditions. It is also more compact and lighter in weight than mechanical AWD systems, so fuel consumption and vehicle packaging are not compromised.

The system efficiently generates drive torque using power from the hybrid vehicle system and an additional motor on the rear axle. This design reduces energy losses, saves weight and optimises AWD operationin different driving conditions.

Compared to the fourth generation model, the maximum torque to the rear wheels has increased by 30 per cent, from 953 to 1,300 Nm, matching or surpassing the torque achieved by mechanical systems and giving more sure-footed performance, for example when pulling away on loose, slippery surfaces. Also, the front/rear split can vary from 100:0 to up to 20:80, depending on driving conditions.

The electric AWD-i system automatically optimises the torque ratio according to driving conditions, providing improved handling, stability and off-road performance, particularly in faithful line tracing through bends in slippery conditions, giving the driver a strong feeling of all four wheels being in good contact with the road.

The mechanical all-wheel drive system on the new RAV4 2.0-litre direct injection petrol CVT model is equipped with Toyota’s first dynamictorque vectoring system with Rear Driveline Disconnect. Featuring twin couplings on the rear axle, this manages torque distribution between the left and right rear wheels to give stable performance and accurate response to the driver’s steering inputs when cornering, both in dry and slippery conditions.

AWD INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT

The new RAV4’s all-wheel drive performance is further improved with the introduction of AWD Integrated Management (AIM), a unique feature in its class. This automatically adjusts different vehicle systems – steering assist, brake and throttle control, shift pattern and drive torque distribution – according to the drive mode selected. In the new RAV4 Hybrid AWD-i, the driver can switch from Normal to Eco or Sport mode. When choosing Sport mode, AIM modifies the steering assist, throttle control shift schedule and drive torque distribution to gain better on-road performance.

GREATER “ESCAPE” CAPABILITY WITH TRAIL MODE

The RAV4 Hybrid gains a higher level of capability with the introduction of a new automatic limited-slip differential control – Trail Mode – which ensures the best possible grip and control on low-grip surfaces. It can also provide valuable assistance when tackling challenging off-road conditions.

With the fourth generation RAV4 Hybrid, there was a risk of the vehicle becoming stranded if a driven wheel lost contact with the ground on very uneven terrain. On the new model, by activating Trail Mode (via a button on the centre console), the free rotating wheel can be braked and drive torque directed to the grounded wheel. Throttle control and the transmission shift pattern are also adapted to help the driver keep the vehicle moving.

EQUIPMENT AND NEW TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE

Equipment specifications for the new RAV4 demonstrate how Toyota continues to apply technologies to deliver useful innovations in safety, comfort and everyday practicality.

FEATURES THAT ARE AVAILABLE as standard or as options, accordingto model grade, include a power-operated sunroof, ventilated seats, wireless charging for smartphones and up to five USB ports around the cabin for the connection or charge of multiple devices.

The new RAV4 offers generous equipment specifications across its range in Europe, with all models equipped as standard with the latest iteration of Toyota Safety Sense and an E call emergency contact function.

SECOND GENERATION TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE

Since its introduction in 2015, Toyota has committed itself to the democratisation of advanced safety technologies in its cars, introducingToyota Safety Sense to more than ten million new vehicles worldwide. Toyota Safety Sense’s active safety systems provide effective means of avoiding collisions or mitigating the effects of an accident by warning the driver, preparing safety systems for optimum operation and, if necessary, triggering automatic braking or steering assistance.

In its commitment to building a safe mobility society and the ultimate goal of zero road accident fatalities and injuries, Toyota has continued to develop Toyota Safety Sense to refine and enhance the operationits safety systems. The new second generation Toyota Safety Sense makes its debut on the new, fifth generation RAV4 where it is fitted as standard to all models in the range.

The improved system features a single-lens camera and millimetre-wave radar, both with enhanced performance to expand the scope of hazard detection and functionality. The unit has also been made smaller, so driver gains an even wider field of vision.

Second generation Toyota Safety Sense includes upgraded versions of the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD), intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (iACC), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA), Road Sign Assist (RSA) and Automatic High Beam (AHB). In addition, it introduces Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), which provides more advanced driving support.

The functionality of the Pre-Collision System (PCS w/PD) has been extended so that as well as vehicles it can now detect pedestrians on the road ahead during low-light driving as well as in daylight. It also has the added capability of recognising bicycles in the vehicle’s path*, at relative speeds of approximately 10 and 80 km/h, during daylight hours. Where vehicles are concerned, the system can determine collision risks at speeds from zero to 180 km/h. If it calculates an imminent risk of collision, it will alert the driver and prepare the brakes (Pre-Crash Brake Assist) for maximum stopping force. If the driver fails to act, it will trigger Autonomous Emergency Braking, which can reduce vehicle speed by up to 40 km/h, potentially bringing the car to a stop and avoiding an impact.

The new intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (iACC) is also able to work in conjunction with the car’s Road Sign Assist system. When the car is travelling at a constant, pre-set speed, iACC can recognise new speed limits on major roads and let the driver adjust the speed to keep within the limit, simply by using switches on the steering wheel.

Road Sign Assist (RSA) itself has been enhanced to that it is able to recognise a wider range of road sign warnings and commands, presenting the information on the driver’s multi-information display.

The RAV4’s Toyota Safety Sense includes a new Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) function, which provides a degree of automated driving support. LTA monitors the line markings on motorways and principal routes and applies steering assist to keep the car centred within its lane, when travelling at speeds above 50 km/h. This can reduce collision risks and the burden on the driver when making long motorway journeys.

The intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Tracing Assist work together in slow, stop/go traffic, tracking the vehicle ahead within the traffic lane, maintaining a safe distance and speed, bringing the vehicle to a halt when necessary and moving off seamlessly when traffic flow resumes. This can relieve the driver of much of the stress of driving in slow traffic and significantly reduce the risk of common low-speed rear-end collisions.

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA) has also been improved so that it is able to recognise road margins on straight roads where there are no clear lane markings. If it is difficult or impossible for the system to detect lane markings, for example when driving in heavy traffic, it will track the path of the vehicle ahead, using the front-mounted camera and radar. Also, in combination with LTA, it performs corrective steering operation when lane departure without the driver’s intention is detected.

EQUIPMENT FEATURES

The Active grade welcomes the customer to the RAV4 world with a range of standard features as TSS, 17-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, LED headlights, push-button start, a seven-inch display audio and 4.2-inch TFT multi-information display.

Features such as 18-inch alloys, smart entry, soft touch cabin trims, larger display screens, leather upholstery, projector LED headlights, rear privacy glass and a power-operated tailgate are also available.

STYLE GRADE

The Style grade will stand out with its bi-tone paint finish, striking a contrast between the bodywork colour (a choice of four) and a black roof section, plus projector LED headlights and black 18-inch alloys. In the cabin, sports-style seats, a black headlining and blue trim accents further emphasise the car’s distinctive quality. A wide range of option packs and accessories are available so owners can equip their RAV4 to perfectly meet their lifestyle preferences.

NEW DIGITAL REAR-VIEW MIRROR

The new RAV4 helps drivers gain a better view of their surroundings with a new digital rear-view mirror – a Toyota first. It can be used as a conventional, electrochromic auto-dimming mirror, directly reflecting the road and traffic behind the car, or as a digital monitor with a much wider field of vision.

At the touch of a switch, it presents real-time images relayed from an adjustable, high-definition camera mounted high up on the RAV4’s back window. This ensures a clear view, for example when large items in the load space or tall rear-seat passengers obscure the driver’s line of sight. The camera also provides a wider field of vision and the driver can use touch controls to adjust the image, including a zoom function.

PANORAMIC VIEW MONITOR, PANORAMIC SUNROOF AND JBL AUDIO SYSTEM

Further premium features available on the new RAV4 include a PanoramicView Monitor, which provides the driver with a real-time 360-degree view of the area immediately around the vehicle, including a bird’s eye aspect from above. This is of value both off-road, to better negotiate tricky terrain, and when manoeuvring in confined spaces where hazards can lurk outside the driver’s line of sight.

The open and spacious cabin environment can be further enhanced with an opening panoramic sunroof. Where on-board entertainment is concerned, Toyota has worked with premium audio partner JBL to deliver a unique and immersive experience. Tailor-made for the new RAV4, the JBL audio system provides concert sound quality through its nine-speaker architecture. It features JBL-signature horn tweeters,a powerful new subwoofer and an amplifier with Clari-Fi™ music restoration technology.

CONNECTED SERVICES

Connected services will also be offered on the new RAV4. This all-new application makes numerous convenience and peace of mind features available to customers, including Last Mile guidance, Send to Car navigation, Find my Car, Driving analytics and Maintenance Reminder.

YOSHIKAZU SAEKI – CHIEF ENGINEER

YOSHIKAZU SAEKI joined Toyota in 1987 and has taken key roles in the development of the Toyota Avalon and Camry and the Lexus brand. More recently has been closely involved in Toyota’s global expansion, bringing his experience to bear in the development of new technologies, platforms and models. As Chief Engineer of the new RAV4 he explains his ambitions for the car.

“The RAV4 has held a strong market presence since its introduction 25 years ago. It has gained a loyal following the world over, continually evolving to respond to changing customer needs. For the new RAV4, we set out to create a product that appeals to the next generation of customers.

“The first thing we considered was how we could redefine RAV4’s product value. We addressed the fundamental reason for its being and thought about how we could create an SUV that can withstand the test of time – one that can last for the next 25 years.

“It is never easy to create a new concept in such a strictly segmentedand increasingly competitive market. We needed to deliver a‘wow’ factor to customers, inspire them with a vehicle that has exceptional presence and highlight the benefits of owning it. These were the foundations on which we developed the fifth generation RAV4.

“Since the first generation model, there have been two over-arching views of the RAV4 – ‘driving performance suited to any road’ and a ‘user-friendly interior suited to any situation’. It was my mission to evolve these views.

“This means, the RAV4 should have a strong presence and reliable toughness on any road while offering a stress-free driving experience for driver and passengers.

“At the very beginning of the design process we thought about how best to evolve the original concept. This led us to the new concept of Adventure and Refinement. Adventure sends out a simple, strong message that drivers can drive anywhere they want, expressing waku-doki – the equivalent of ‘heart-pumping excitement’ in Japanese. Refinement is expressed in a sophisticated design that fits in with an urban setting.

“Combining these contrasting elements enhances the new RAV4’s unique value. Furthermore, its wide stance, large tyres and raised ground clearance create a strong image which have further emphasised with the polygon design theme and the vehicle’s multipurpose capabilities. Just looking at the new RAV triggers the urge to get in and go somewhere.

“Where vehicle performance, handling and stability are concerned, we defined the key concept as ‘Confident and Natural’ – with the driver’ssensibilities at the heart of everything. As a team we put great effort into improving the driving experience by focusing on enhancing tyre-to-ground contact, stable and natural cornering and smooth, responsive driving.

“We’ve improved the RAV4’s performance to meet the demands of any road. Whereas a conventional SUV suspension makes for an uncomfortable, unresponsive ride in off-road conditions, the RAV4 provides sedan-like comfort and an enjoyable ride.”

With its low centre of gravity and significantly increased body rigidity, the new RAV4’s GA-K platform directly contributes to superior handling, ride comfort, a spacious interior, class-leading load space and the freedom to produce a strong, eye-catching design with lower roof and hood lines and higher ground clearance. As well as providing more space and comfort, the cabin displays exceptional quality and finish throughout.

The new RAV4 remains unique in its class in offering customers a self-charging hybrid powertrain – the choice of an overwhelming majority of customers in Western Europe (85 per cent in 2018). The new 2.5 litre, 222 DIN hp TNGA hybrid powertrain will strengthen customer appeal, delivering step-changes in power, responsiveness and efficiency, with best-in-class fuel economy and emissions levels.

At the same time, all-wheel drive systems have been comprehensively improved to achieve a “drive on any road” capability. The new RAV4 Hybrid’s electric AWD system has been re-engineered and enhanced to provide a much stronger performance in challenging conditions and secure handling on slippery surfaces.

The new RAV4 is also the first Toyota to benefit from additional Toyota Safety Sense features that extend the use of advanced technologies to help prevent accidents and provide greater driver assistance, including systems that introduce a degree of automated driving.

TOYOTA NEW GLOBAL ARCHITECTURE PLATFORM

The foundation of the new RAV4’s dynamic qualities is its all-new TNGA platform. This gives the car the core strengths of a low centre gravity, light weight and a strong, rigid and balanced chassis that delivers exceptional handling, stability and driver rewards.

For the customer this makes the car more fun to drive, while at the same time enabling great design inside and out, enhanced safety performance that gives greater peace of mind and greater comfort for everyone on board.

The lowest possible centre of gravity is achieved by making every component lighter and locating it lower down in the vehicle – everything from the engine to the seats in the cabin. The platform also allows for a 57 per cent increase in the RAV4’s body rigidity, which contributes to a stable, flat ride with superior handling.

The TNGA platform underpins the “confident and natural” driving quality Toyota has sought for the new model: “confident” in not reacting adversely to disturbances and communicating a sense of stability, and “natural” in its intuitive, natural response to the driver’s inputs. Beyond the benefits of the chassis itself, further detailed measures make important contributions to its overall quality, with Toyota’s top engineers leading the development of the new RAV4’s dynamic performance, fine-tuning its handling and driveability.

For example, the design and location of the fuel tank have been changed to achieve better handling and stability. The tank is now located laterally in front of the rear axle so that its load is spread evenly between the wheels, supporting flat, stable performance. Optimum weight balance is not only achieved front-to-rear (51/49) but also left-to-right.

Response from the Electric Power Steering has been improved by moving the assist motor from the column to the rack. The result is more linear increase in steering input torque and less strain on the steering shaft, which communicates a better, more direct feel to the driver as the steering loads up and gives more faithful line tracing through corners. Summer-specification tyres are used in place of the all-weather type, further adding to the precise driving quality and achieving top-class braking distances.

The RAV4’s TNGA platform also distinguishes itself in its use of a double wishbone rear suspension system. Thanks to the low centre of gravity and high body rigidity, the suspension does not have to be rendered stiffer to meet dynamic targets. Nonetheless, precise adjustments have been made to the rear suspension to focus on better ride comfort, including a more upright setting for the shock absorbers and optimisation of the locating point for the trailing arms.

Handling is thus agile, faithful and neutral, giving the driver confidence with accurate responses to the driver’s use of the steering wheel and throttle pedal and optimised shift patterns.

CONCEPT AND DESIGN 

The TNGA platform was of great benefit to Toyota’s designers in their mission to give the new RAV4 a strong SUV character and styling that sets it apart from other models in its segment.

The fact that TNGA introduces so many standardised parts “under the skin” simplifies the development process, giving the designers more time and scope to create an all-new look, inside and out. The exterior lines and detailing in the cabin are influenced by regular, polygonal shapes, communicating strength and coherence.

The powerful design combines with the unique new self-charging hybrid powertrain to give the new RAV4 the stand-out qualities required to attract customers in a highly competitive marketplace, in particular conquest sales to people new to the model and the Toyota brand.

Key elements in generating this impact include raising the ground clearance (+15 mm), using large diameter wheels and making the car suitable for multiple types of use.

The exterior look is powerful and individual, with a solid form that extends from the front of the vehicle along the sides to the rear, giving the sense of a strong mass and authentic SUV capabilities. At the front the emphasis is on width and strength with extra volume added to the lower bumper section, and there is a similar effect at the rear where the horizontal line created by the tail lights and back window angles sharply downwards at each edge, drawing the eye towards the rear wheels and expressing the “polygon” influence on the design.

The cabin is characterised by high sensory quality throughout and precision execution. Soft-touch surfaces abound, including the dashboard and door panels. Consistent patterns, textures, colours and ambient lighting are applied, with symmetrical shapes and use of the polygon motif seen in the Toyota FT-AC concept model. Switchgear is new, too, with cleanly integrated buttons and pleasingly tactile controls, such as the button/dial to adjust the air conditioning.

The low-set instrument panel – a further benefit of the TNGA platform – has powerful horizontal lines that flow into the door panels, emphasising the cabin’s generous width and giving the driver a clearer view of the road ahead. A larger, open centre console between the front seats is in keeping with a welcoming, functional SUV interior. Special attention was paid to providing plenty of useful and easily accessible storage for the driver and front passenger.

The TNGA platform helps secure impressive cabin space, best-in-class load space and all-round comfort. Reducing the front and rear overhangs by a combined 35 mm (-5 mm front, -30 mm rear) means the new model is shorter overall by 5 mm (4,600 mm) and retains its agile manoeuvrability, yet the wheelbase has been increased by 30 mm (2,690 mm), securing a more spacious cabin.

To add to the new model’s purposeful, wide stance, overall width has grown by 10 mm (1,855 mm) and the front and rear treads have been increased. At the same time, overall height has been brought down by 10 mm (to 1,650 mm).

On-board comfort and convenience

Securing better all-round visibility was a key consideration in the RAV4’s design process. The TNGA platform allows the hood to sit 15 mm lower, adding two degrees to the driver’s forward field of vision, and the external mirrors have been moved to a lower position on the front doors. The front pillars have been made slimmer, the belt line has been lowered and the rearward view from the driver’s seat has been improved by enlarging the rear side windows and making a new digital rear-view mirror available (further details in the Equipment section).

The driver’s comfort and sense of control when at the wheel are important considerations, and the new TNGA chassis allows for a more engaging driving position, without detracting from the commanding view of the road that’s a defining quality of SUVs. The driver’s hip point has been lowered by 15 mm, but the range of steering wheel adjustment has been increased by 50 per cent. This, together with a generous seat adjustment range and precise positioning of the pedals and arm rest, ensures more customers are able to find their ideal position when driving.

Comfort for rear seat passengers has been improved with 40 mm added to the left/right couple distance, more spacious rear footwells and two air vents. Increasing the opening angle of the rear doors and reducing the distance from the hip point to the rocker panel makes getting into and out of the vehicle and access to child seats easier.

The load space behind the rear seats has been made larger and more user-friendly, notably thanks to a fully flat floor and a length extended by 60 mm to secure best-in-class capacity, 79 litres more than in the current RAV4. Flexibility is designed-in so that the space can easily be adapted to gain more cargo room when required: with the rear seats folded down, the new RAV4 can accommodate a 29-inch mountain bike without any wheels having to be removed.

There is a height-adjustable, two-level deck board that can be reversed when dirty items need to be carried. The rear seats have a 60:40 split-folding function and there are storage nets on each side of the boot. Clever details include a hand grip on the tailgate that can serve as a hanger and a power-operated tailgate with hands-free function.

POWERTRAINS AND PERFORMANCE

The new RAV4 will be available with two TNGA powertrains, both more powerful and fuel-efficient than those in the current model.

The new 2.5 litre RAV4 Hybrid combines fuel and emissions efficiency and quiet operation with more power and greater responsiveness.

The full system maximum output of 222 DIN hp/163 kW compares to 197 DIN hp /145 kW for the current model, signalling how Toyota’s latest self-charging hybrid technology is not lacking in strength; acceleration from rest to 100 km/h takes just 8.1 seconds.

This proposal of “power with no compromise” gives the new RAV4 a unique advantage in its class and, with the benefit of its improved performance, driveability and efficiency, is expected to account for an even greater proportion of sales. Toyota predicts that this will rise from the current 85 per cent to 90 per cent for the new model in Western Europe. A new 2.0 litre petrol engine will also be available, with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions.

Toyota’s fourth generation self-charging hybrid system makes its debut in the RAV4, bringing with it multiple benefits. Key components, including the power control unit (PCU) and the Nickel metal-hydride battery are more compact and lighter in weight, and have been engineered to reduce electrical and mechanical losses.

The powertrain makes use of Toyota’s new 2.5 litre Dynamic Force engine, a four-cylinder unit with direct and indirect injection that targets best-in-class fuel consumption and emissions for the new RAV4. Toyota expects combined cycle fuel economy to be 4.5 l/100 km* (Correlated NEDC) with CO₂emissions from as low as 102 g/km* (Correlated NEDC). For the driver, the results are better acceleration from stationary, improved efficiency at higher speeds and overall smoother and more linear acceleration.

ALL-WHEEL DRIVE

Toyota is introducing improvements in the all-wheel drive technology in the new RAV4 to deliver enhanced performance, capabilities and control in all driving conditions, adding to the model’s “go anywhere” spirit and driving pleasure. Its impressive AWD performance on-road and off will further distinguish the new RAV4 among its competitors, with secure cornering performance and grip in all conditions.

RAV Hybrid with significantly enhanced electric AWD system

The new RAV4 Hybrid is equipped with a significantly enhanced and more capable electric AWD system that comes with no penalties: it returns better fuel economy in urban driving, quieter performance at high speeds and better traction in slippery conditions. It is also more compact and lighter in weight than mechanical AWD systems, so fuel consumption and vehicle packaging are not compromised

The system efficiently generates drive torque using power from the hybrid vehicle system and an additional motor generator on the rear axle. This design reduces energy losses, saves weight and optimises AWD operation in different driving conditions.

Compared to the current model, the level of torque that can be directed to the rear wheels has been increased by 30 per cent, enabling a front/rear split from 100:0 to up to 20:80, depending on driving conditions. Maximum torque to the rear wheels has increased from 953 to 1,300 Nm, matching or overachieving torque achieved by mechanical systems and giving more sure-footed performance, for example when pulling away on loose, slippery surfaces.

The electric AWD system automatically optimises this torque ratio according to driving conditions, providing improved handling, stability and off-road performance, particularly in faithful line tracing through bends in slippery conditions, giving the driver a strong feeling of all four wheels being in good contact with the road.

The mechanical all-wheel drive system on the new RAV4 2.0 litre petrol CVT model is equipped with Toyota’s first dynamic torque vectoring system with Rear Driveline Disconnect. Featuring twin couplings on the rear axle, this manages torque distribution between the left and right rear wheels to give stable performance and accurate response to the driver’s steering inputs when cornering, both in dry and slippery conditions.

AWD Integrated Management

The new RAV4’s AWD performance is further improved with the introduction of AWD Integrated Management (AIM), a unique feature in its class. This automatically adjusts different vehicle systems – steering assist, brake and throttle control, shift pattern and drive torque distribution – according to the drive mode selected. In the new RAV4 Hybrid, the driver can switch from Normal to Eco or Sport mode. When choosing Sport mode, AIM modifies the steering assist, throttle control shift schedule and drive torque distribution to gain better on-road performance.

Greater “escape” capability with Trail Mode

The RAV4 Hybrid gains a higher level of capability with the introduction of a new automatic limited-slip differential control – Trail Mode – which ensures the best possible grip and control in slippery conditions. It can also provide valuable assistance when tackling challenging off-road conditions.

With the current generation RAV4 Hybrid, there is a risk of the vehicle becoming stranded if a driven wheel loses contact with the ground on very uneven terrain. On the new model, by activating the Trail Mode (via a Drive mode selector on the centre console), the free rotating wheel can be braked and drive torque directed to the grounded wheel. Throttle control and the transmission shift pattern are also adapted to help the driver keep the vehicle moving.

EQUIPMENT AND ENHANCED TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE SYSTEMS

Equipment specifications for the new RAV4 will demonstrate how Toyota continues to apply technologies to deliver useful innovations in safety, technology, comfort and everyday practicality.

Features that will be available as standard or as options, according to model grade, will include a power-operated panoramic roof, ventilated seats, wireless charging for smartphones and up to five USB ports around the cabin for the connection of multiple devices.

Equipment features

RAV4 HERITAGE AND MARKET SUCCESS

The Toyota RAV4 started out as a pioneer, niche model but has gone from strength to strength to become one of the world’s best-selling vehicles. It can be credited with creating a whole new market segment, one in which today every major manufacturer is represented.

The model now sits at the heart of Toyota’s global business. Cumulative global sales across four generations since 1994 have reached more than 8.1 million, while in 2017 the current RAV4 was the world’s best-selling SUV and fourth best-selling model overall, with 810,953 sales.

In Europe, high customer demand for SUVs has seen the market increase four-fold in the past four years (accounting for 22.7 per cent of the new car market) and annual sales are expected to reach more than five million by 2023. Sales volumes in the D-SUV segment remain stable, at around 1.5 million a year.

New Cars on Display

Two key product elements are exclusively featured at the Paris Motor Show: Hybrid technology and Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA).

For more than 20 years Toyota has developed, improved and democratised its self-charging hybrid technology. At Paris this year, only hybrid vehicles will be exhibited – from the compact Yaris, to the latest generations of the Corolla, the RAV4 and the Camry.

Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) forms the basis of Toyota’s new product and powertrain offers. More than a platform, TNGA is an engineering and design philosophy. While improving the driving dynamics of cars, it also allows the development of exterior and interior designs with stronger emotional appeal.

The stand will feature the world premiere of the all new Corolla Touring Sports, alongside the full reveal of its Hatchback sibling. Thanks to the new TNGA-C platform, the new Corolla features an emotional design as well as offering the choice of two self-charging hybrid powertrains – a 1.8l or a brand new 2.0l.

The new RAV4 will debut as a European premiere, with a strong rugged design, the new TNGA-K platform and the new 2.5l self-charging hybrid.

After 14 years of absence, Camry is returning to Western Europe with a completely new model, also underpinned by the new TNGA-K platform and also with the new 2.5l self-charging hybrid.

At the Paris motor show 20 years ago, the Yaris made its world debut. To celebrate that anniversary, a special ‘Y20’ edition is available with the same stand-out Golden Yellow paintwork as the original car from 1998, but this time executed as a bi-tone including a contemporary dark grey roof and other dark grey accents. The other special edition of Yaris at the show celebrates Toyota GAZOO Racing’s successful rally season with a GR Sport version.

Besides car models, Toyota will showcase the latest safety technology development with Toyota Safety Sense featuring new features and functions, fitted on the new Corolla and RAV4.

At the dedicated Toyota GAZOO Racing area, the 2018 Le Mans-winning Toyota TS050 Hybrid LMP1 car will be on display together with the much-coveted Le Mans trophy.
