The fun-to-drive Toyota Yaris line-up includes an enhanced GR SPORT grade and stylish new options for its 2025 model year while maintaining a commitment to class-leading efficiency and safety in the highly competitive B-segment.

An agile compact car ideally suited to modern urban life, with proven quality, exceptional efficiency and fun-to-drive dynamics, the multiple award-winning Yaris is consistently one of Toyota’s best-selling models in Europe. The Yaris family has accumulated more than 10 million global sales, including more than five million in Europe, since its launch in 1999.

Yaris has been a benchmark for innovation since its debut, whilst staying true to a “big-small” philosophy which combines a compact and purposeful exterior with spacious interior. From raising the bar on safety to pioneering full hybrid power in the B-segment and becoming the first compact car built on the modular Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) GA-B platform, Yaris has continually set new standards for a quarter of a century.

Toyota’s latest version of the fourth generation Yaris is built in Europe, for European customers, and now offers new choices with enhanced aesthetic options as well as an eye-catching update of the Yaris GR SPORT grade.

Three years after first hitting the streets, the new Yaris GR SPORT looks keener than ever thanks to new exterior and interior styling which capture the spirit of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing, Toyota’s multiple championship winning motorsport team.

An emotive new colour, Storm Grey, is available exclusively on the Yaris GR SPORT in 2025, both in monotone and bi-tone options, while striking 18-inch matt alloy wheels impress with a bold new design.

Inside, the Yaris GR SPORT’s stylish interior execution – with stand-out red stitching and gun metal grey accents – is upgraded by an embossed GR SPORT logo on the headrests, achieving a clean and sophisticated look.

The 2025 Yaris line-up includes the all-new Forest Green colour, either as elegant monotone or striking bi-tone in combination with contrasting black roof, which compliments the muscular, agile lines and styling that is true to Yaris’ poised handling and responsive chassis.

The Yaris 2025 range continues to employ a “dual hybrid” approach to meet customers’ varying needs and ensure exceptional efficiency, via best-in-class environmental performance with the “Hybrid 115”, or the “Hybrid 130” with its sharper acceleration and even more engaging drive. By offering a choice of performance profile, Yaris has strong appeal to customers, who rank hybrid as the top purchase consideration.

Throughout the Yaris range, drivers benefit from the latest technologies for an outstanding user experience. Toyota T-Mate includes the latest generation Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance systems, making the car safer, easier to drive and park. Meanwhile, a digital user experience features a customisable driver’s instrument display and a powerful multimedia system with display screens of up to 10.5 inches.

Drivers can experience the new Toyota Yaris, including the Toyota Yaris GR SPORT, in 2025, with start of production planned for February next year.

 

The Yaris has been a class-leading benchmark for innovation, and a pioneer for introducing new technologies and concepts to the compact segment, for almost a quarter of a century during which it has been one of Toyota’s consistently best-selling models in Europe.

The current generation Yaris has proven its adaptability to customers’ needs with the Yaris family growing to include the widely acclaimed GR Yaris pure performance sports car in 2020 and the high-riding urban crossover SUV, the Yaris Cross in 2021.

By the end of February 2023, cumulative sales of the Yaris family in Europe have reached 5,155,506 units since the first generation Yaris was launched in 1999. In 2022, sales of the Yaris family represented over one-third of Toyota’s total sales in Europe with 185,781 Yaris, 156,086 Yaris Cross and 5,392 GR Yaris, accounting for 8% of the total segment.

Yaris is a true global Toyota model with manufacturing sites around the world. Initial Yaris production started in January 1999 at the Takaoka Plant in Aichi, Japan. Today, the Yaris has production bases in 10 countries: Japan, Brazil, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand, France and Czech Republic.

In Europe, Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (TMMF) has produced the Yaris since 2001 and the Yaris Cross since 2021, the same year that Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic (TMMCZ) in Kolin also started Yaris production to cater for the increasing demand for the model in Europe. Cumulative European production of the Yaris family reached over 4.6 million by the end of 2022.

Key components within the Yaris, such as the petrol and hybrid electric engines and transmissions are also locally produced, at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland (TMMP), which supplies both TMMF and TMMCZ.

As part of its mission to provide stylish, practical mobility for the demands of modern life, the Yaris has an enviable history of innovation in safety, efficiency and performance, driving an enduring allure for customers.

The first generation Yaris won the coveted Car of the Year title in 2000, the first Toyota model ever to earn that accolade, complementing the Japanese Car of the Year in the same year awarded to the Toyota Vitz, the name of the model in Japan. Every subsequent generation of Yaris has been short-listed for Car of the Year and, in 2021, the current generation became the first nameplate to achieve a second Car of the Year title in the 21st Century.

First Generation – Piccolo Genio a.k.a. Little Genius

In the late 1990s, Toyota wanted to develop a new compact car for global use in the 21st Century. The brand-new model was set to build upon the footsteps of the highly regarded Toyota Starlet supermini, a tough act to follow. To achieve this, the model had to adopt a modern appearance and feature the latest technologies, offering a preview of motoring in the next millennium by re-writing the rulebook for small cars with its revolutionary “big-small” design.

The world got its first glimpse of Toyota’s vision with an all-new concept, the Toyota Funtime, at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show, part of the “Fun” project of concept models to showcase the versatility of shared platform engineering. The concept car was styled at Toyota’s European Office of Creation (EPOC) in Brussels, Belgium.

A year later, the new production Toyota Yaris made its debut at the Paris Motor Show. The exterior was styled at EPOC—which would soon become Toyota European Design Development (ED²)—while the interior design was a collaboration between Europe and Japan. The first generation Yaris was stylish, characterful and purposefully European in flavour, with a relatively tall, spacious and organically shaped body built around the central design concept of the human dimension.

Although the external dimensions were pleasingly compact, inside the supermini Yaris boasted a comfortable and practical interior which exceeded the space offered in many larger vehicles, with generous headroom and flexible seating to maximise storage.

Clever, minimalist packaging and appealing aesthetics came without any compromise on safety, with the first Yaris becoming the safest car in its segment according to Euro NCAP ratings, setting a trend which continues to this day.

Powering the innovative first generation Yaris was an advanced and efficient 1.0-litre petrol engine—nicknamed “Mighty Atom” for its ability to deliver power equivalent to a traditional 1.4-litre engine—which achieved a punchy 68 DIN hp and earned the inaugural 1999 International Engine of the Year award.

The Yaris forever wrote itself into Toyota’s history when it was awarded the 2000 Car of the Year, the first Toyota model ever to win the prestigious award by a jury of European automotive journalists. The jury praised the first generation Yaris’ looks both inside and out, as well as the versatility of the cosy cabin. The Yaris’ 1.0-litre engine was also acclaimed for its brilliance and efficiency, with the jury saying it is the best 1.0-litre engine money can buy. A second engine option was introduced later in the year, offering customers of the high-spec five-door model a 1.3-litre VVT-i unit delivering 87 DIN hp.

In 2001, the Yaris helped launch the T-Sport performance brand in Europe. The three door Yaris T-Sport was equipped with a powerful 1.5-litre VVT-i engine delivering 106 DIN hp at 6,000 rpm, and featured a performance-tuned chassis, strengthened bodyshell and a sporty interior. The class-leading hot hatch was quicker from 0-100 kph than most 1.6-litre competitors at time at 9.0 seconds, and faster in the mid-range from 60 to 100 kph (8.4 seconds) than any comparable competitors. The success of the Yaris T-Sport set the foundations for performance versions to be included in the line-up of every Yaris generation since.

With the introduction of a 1.4-litre D-4D diesel engine in 2002, which saw Toyota become the first manufacturer in the world to produce a diesel engine entirely of aluminium, the powertrain choice for the Yaris range was complete.

The Yaris quickly became a favourite with customers across Europe, who found it a practical, fun and fashionable solution to the demands of everyday urban life and a reliable partner for longer distances, emphasised by worldwide sales of over 1.2 million units of the first generation.

The innovative and amicable character of the first generation Yaris is perhaps best summed up by the tagline used by Toyota in a highly successful advertising campaign in Italy which affectionately nicknamed the new car “piccolo genio” or “little genius”.

A Car with Many Names

Apart from affectionate nicknames, the Yaris has been known by different names around the world. The now well-known Yaris name is derived from “Charis”, the singular form of Charites, the Greek goddesses of charm, beauty, nature, human creativity, goodwill and fertility.

Since the model’s debut in Japan in 1999 until the launch of the current generation, the model was marketed as Vitz. Depending on variant and region, the model has also been known as the Toyota Platz, Echo, Belta, Vios and Scion iA. It has also been marketed as the Daihatsu Charade and Mazda2 in certain markets.

The 10 million cumulative sales milestone considers only the Yaris, Vitz, Yaris Cross and GR Yaris nameplates.

Second Generation - Five-Star Performer

The Yaris grew up with its second generation, launched in Europe for 2005. The car’s reputation for clever packaging for optimal interior space and comfort, combined with advanced technology for safety and performance, was enhanced, while the user experience became more refined.

A “big car thinking” approach and larger dimensions all round made the second generation roomier than ever, delivering space to rival cars from the larger C-segment, thanks to a flat rear floor which allowed three adults to sit comfortably in the back where each 60:40 section can slide and recline to deliver an impressive 880 mm legroom for rear passengers.

A best-in-class 737 litres of load space was achieved in part via Toyota’s convenient Easy Flat system, which created a flat-floored area by quickly and easily folding down the rear seats. An obsessive attention to detail and passenger comfort included fine-tuning the sound of the doors closing and delivering 18.2 litres of storage capacity within the dashboard alone.

Performance and efficiency were enhanced as well as driving dynamics and ride comfort, aided by an aerodynamically efficient body with a low drag coefficient of 0.30.

An enviable history of setting higher safety standards was extended with a five-star Euro NCAP rating for occupant protection, the first time for a Yaris. That peace of mind came thanks to Toyota’s advanced Minimal Intrusion Cabin System and up to nine air bags installed throughout the cabin, including a driver’s knee airbag; a milestone for a car of the Yaris’ size.

The second generation Yaris was offered in three- and five-door styles with a choice of three engines. A new 1.0-litre VVT-i petrol powerplant delivered economy and performance while remaining lightweight, producing class-leading power (69 DIN hp) and torque (93 Nm). The 1.3-litre VVT-i unit carried over from the previous generation remained popular with low-end torque and high-end power improved for a sporty yet smooth feel. The 1.4-litre D-4D diesel engine had evolved and now produced 90 DIN hp at 3,600 rpm.

As the Yaris continually gained popularity among drivers of all ages, clamour for a sportier option was met by the Yaris TS. This new sports hatchback variant was launched at the 2006 Paris Motor Show and equipped with a new 132 DIN hp 1.8 litre Dual VVT-i engine with a top speed of 194 km/h, sports suspension and sports styling, including rear spoiler and side skirts.

With environmental awareness on the rise, customer demand for smaller, more efficient cars was accelerating in Europe. The Yaris led the way by combining dashing urban good looks with engineering innovation. Toyota Optimal Drive technology was introduced in 2009, bringing fuel efficiency and emissions improvements without compromising the Yaris’ famously nimble performance.

Third Generation - Hello Hybrid

A pioneering spirit characterises all Yaris models and, in 2012, the third generation revolutionised the supermini market by introducing a full hybrid option and becoming the most technically advanced Yaris yet.

Three years of development were dedicated to comprehensively revising the Hybrid Synergy Drive, including redesigning around 70% of engine parts, to make it Toyota’s lightest and most compact hybrid system, without compromise on performance, interior comfort or load space.

As the first full hybrid vehicle in the B-segment—yet another first for the ground-breaking nameplate—the Yaris became symbolic of Toyota’s dedication to make the hybrid benefits of efficiency and stress-free driving accessible to an ever-growing number of customers, and the company’s commitment to introduce full hybrids across its model range.

Thanks to state-of-the-art exhaust gas recirculation technology and an electric water pump, hybrid power in the Yaris brought best-in-class performance and fuel efficiency from the 100 DIN hp system, as well as the ability to drive in full electric mode for the first time, without tailpipe emissions.

Not only was the third generation Yaris a ground-breaking technical step forward, it also set a benchmark in stylish, sophisticated exterior design, with bold colour choices and an aerodynamically optimised body shape, which achieved a class-leading drag co-efficient of 0.287.

In 2017, Toyota European Design and Development and engineering teams in Europe took a lead role in a global €90 million project to update the third generation Yaris, which saw the introduction of more than 900 new parts to improve design, dynamic performance and safety.

Building on another five-star Euro NCAP rating, Toyota Safety Sense technologies were introduced across the range as part of the facelift, proving once again that safety comes as standard with Yaris, while a fresh look, featuring changes to the front and rear styling and created at Toyota’s ED² design studio also made its debut.

Toyota’s return to the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) in 2017 under Toyota GAZOO Racing led to the development of the limited-edition Yaris GRMN, the first GRMN (which stands for “GAZOO Racing tuned by the Meister of Nürburgring”) performance Toyota to be built and sold in Europe. The Yaris GRMN’s authentic sportscar quality ensured all 400 units sold out before the car even reached the showroom.

In 2018, the Toyota GAZOO Racing-inspired Yaris GR SPORT was introduced to the range as the first GR SPORT specification model to be launched in Europe. The continued success of the GR SPORT grade has seen the sport performance-inspired specification introduced across the Toyota range in Europe including Yaris, Yaris Cross, Corolla, C-HR, RAV4 and Hilux.

Fourth Generation - Dynamic Performance and Safety

The fourth generation Yaris, launched in 2020, was engineered to be the world’s safest compact car, thanks to Advanced Driver Assist systems (ADAS) being provided as standard. It was also the first model to be known globally as Yaris.

A return to the “big-small” concept created an even more dynamic appearance, shorter, wider and lower than the previous model, with powerful exterior design expressing the agility and compactness required to negotiate city driving and parking, while retaining interior space and comfort.

A key element to achieving greater ambitions for the fourth generation was the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) GA-B platform. Yaris became the first compact car to be built on this modular platform which enhanced dynamic performance and improved ride and handling, via a low centre of gravity and high-rigidity body.

The GA-B platform also contributed to an eye-catching design, styled on the stance of a sprinter in the starting blocks. A wider, lower and more compact appearance, and lower seating position for the driver, created a “condensed and agile” look from an energetic, dynamic car always ready to go.

Overall drivetrain efficiency was increased by 22% at no cost to performance, which benefited from a 16% improvement, to a total system output of 116 DIN hp. A more engaging drive came via sharper throttle response which contributed to a 15% reduction in 0-100 km/h time, now standing at a brisk 9.7 seconds.

The latest generation of hybrid technology was optimised for weight, performance and efficiency, which transformed Yaris’ EV driving capabilities. The serenity of an all-electric drive could be enjoyed at speeds up to 130 km/h while enhanced hybrid power delivered improved acceleration at low speeds and on the highway, with more linear acceleration creating a stronger fun-to-drive sensation.

The fourth generation Yaris was again Toyota’s most popular model in Europe and became the best-selling model in the region for the first time, thanks to its modern combination of compact, well-equipped urban chic and the lowest fuel consumption in class.

Just over two decades since the Yaris won the first Car of the Year for Toyota, the fourth generation Yaris was voted 2021 Car of the Year by the jury of 59 European automotive journalists. The jury praised Yaris’ hybrid technology for its smooth driving, low emissions and accessible price point – illustrating why more than 80% of Yaris buyers choose the hybrid powertrain. The Yaris was also recognised for its design, dynamic performance, and class-leading safety.

In 2022, the new Yaris GR SPORT, based on the fourth generation Yaris, went on sale in Europe with the exclusive, new Dynamic Grey exterior colour and bi-tone black accenting. New bespoke 18-inch wheels with machined red accent line segments reinforce the GAZOO Racing lineage and the front grille receives a brand new mesh design which features a distinct “G” motif pattern. The Yaris GR SPORT also features suspension tuning and enhanced body rigidity for a more responsive, comfortable and engaging experience.

GR Yaris - Award-Winning Sportscar

Following in the wheel tracks of the successful Yaris GRMN and first Yaris GR SPORT came the first original GAZOO Racing pure performance sports car, the GR Yaris, in 2020.

This road-going sports car was inspired by success with the Yaris World Rally Car, which earned the Toyota GAZOO Racing World Rally Team one manufacturers’ title and two drivers’ and co-drivers’ titles at the time of the model’s release. It maintained the nameplate’s role as a pathfinder for innovative technologies and received unprecedented acclaim, becoming an instant modern classic.

The GR Yaris was developed directly from Toyota’s rally experience on a unique platform, combining the new GA-B and a rear section adapted from the GA-C platform. It incorporates lightweight aluminium body panels and a forged carbon composite roof alongside weight-saving in parts throughout the car.

At its heart is the world’s most powerful three-cylinder engine, also the smallest and lightest 1.6-litre turbo. Producing 261 DIN hp and 360 Nm of torque, it launches the GR Yaris from rest to 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds, and on to an electronically limited top speed of 230 km/h.

A kerb weight of just 1,280 kg gives the GR Yaris an excellent weight-to-power ratio of 4.9 kg per 1 DIN hp distributed via the permanent, electronically controlled all-wheel drive GR-FOUR system. That potent combination ensured the limited production of 25,000 units were rapidly sold out to eager enthusiasts keen to experience the most extreme Yaris ever created.

The GR Yaris is also at the vanguard of Toyota’s quest for a carbon neutral future, for production cars and motorsport. Illustrating the company’s ongoing commitment to investing in new and varied powertrain technology, a development GR Yaris H2, featuring a hydrogen-powered combustion engine with almost zero tailpipe emissions, made its European debut in August 2021. Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda, co-driven by rally legend Juha Kankkunen, completed exhibition runs at the Ypres Rally in Belgium.

With the change in regulations in the World Rally Championship, Toyota GAZOO Racing introduced the GR Yaris Rally1, based on the road going model, for the 2022 season.

To date, Toyota GAZOO Racing World Rally Team has achieved an impressive three manufacturers’ and four drivers’ and co-drivers’ titles, bringing Toyota’s total tally in the World Rally Championship to six manufactures’ titles.

Yaris Cross - An Authentic SUV

Launched in 2021, the Yaris Cross brought together Toyota’s rich experience and know-how in small cars with its heritage of innovative SUV design and engineering to create an all-new model, perfectly suited to daily use but offering adventure and a fun-to-drive spirit.

Powerful styling expresses robustness and agility in a body that’s compact, giving easy manoeuvrability suitable for urban life, while allowing for an interior with plenty of comfort and generous load capacity, following the established Yaris “big-small” philosophy.

Yaris Cross delivers genuine SUV performance with Toyota’s proven Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system that deploys an additional, independent electric motor on the rear axle to provide extra grip and stability when pulling away and cornering, and more confidence on slippery surfaces.

The compact and lightweight AWD-i system design minimises the impact on fuel and emissions efficiency. Class-leading performance for a B-segment SUV with AWD helped it become one of Toyota’s best sellers in Europe.

Shortly after launch, the Yaris Cross cemented its pedigree in the multiple award-winning Yaris family when it was named the 2022 World Urban Car by organisers of the World Car Awards, selected by a 102-member strong jury of international journalists representing 33 countries.

Designed in Europe

From the very first generation, the European design team has left its mark on the Yaris, initially via EPOC in Brussels and, later at ED² after its relocation to larger premises on the French Riviera, close to Nice, where it has operated since 2000.

That was a clear statement which further strengthened Toyota’s European design development capabilities, after it set out ambitious production and sales plans for the region. As part of the Global Toyota design network, ED² keeps its finger on the pulse of European taste, customs, values and trends, and the Yaris has been inspired by these insights throughout its rich history.

ED² shares design responsibilities with design centres in Japan, depending on the generation and model. As with the first generation, the exterior of the second generation Yaris in 2006 originated from ED², whilst the centre had a hand in the two facelifts of the third generation. For the fourth generation Yaris, ED² was tasked with the Colour, Material & Finishing (CMF) while the Yaris Cross gave designers expanded responsibilities to cover not only CMF, but the exterior design too, with production design being managed in Japan.

Built in Europe

Anticipating the popularity of the first generation Yaris, in October 1998 Toyota broke ground on a new high-tech manufacturing facility in Valenciennes, France to supplement Yaris production from the Takaoka Plant. From the outset, TMMF has been designed to be a ‘green, clean and lean factory of the 21st Century’. Its size is 30% more compact versus a typical automotive plant of that time, giving it a head start to dramatically cut energy and emissions. In some workshops, the storage areas are as much as 10 times more compact compared to automotive industry standards for plants with similar production output.

TMMF went live in January 2001 with an initial annual production capacity of 150,000 units. By 2022, annual production figures had grown to reach 255,584 units, making the plant the largest automotive production site in France by volume. The same year, the Yaris Cross became the most produced single model amongst all brands in France for the first time with 161,508 units produced, dethroning its sibling Yaris which had topped the list seven times in the past 10 years.

The plant now employs 5,000 people and has made a total cumulative investment of 1.5 billion euros. This includes the required capital investments for each new generation and model as well as significant resources committed to continuously improving the company’s environmental performance. Only a few years into its existence, part of the roof had been covered with photovoltaic panels and a 400m² solar wall had been installed.

Since 2019, the site uses 100% renewable electricity and, since 2012, two on-site basins, with a combined volume of 16,000m³, mean it can now be fully autonomous in industrial water. The majority comes from rainwater collected from those basins whilst the remaining amount is recycled from the plant’s waste water which is pre-treated to meet the required standards before use in the production process.

Over the past 20 years, TMMF has successfully reduced the energy required to produce a Yaris by 59%, which has earned it internal recognition as a global leader within Toyota. Adding to these achievements is the recent installation of a new paint line in the Plastics shop, a Toyota global first, that is expected to deliver annual savings of 1,000 tonnes of CO₂. TMMF has set itself the goal to be carbon neutral as of 2030 and be zero emissions by 2040.

The milestone 10 millionth car–a Yaris GR SPORT in Dynamic Grey–rolled off the production lines in TMMF on March 30 like so many Yaris before it and has been delivered to a French customer from the Paris region.

Exterior

The new Yaris GR SPORT can be specified with a new, attractive Dynamic Grey tone which is available only on the GR SPORT model and includes a bi-tone treatment with black accenting.

New, bespoke 18-inch wheels with machined red accent line segments remind reinforce the GAZOO Racing lineage and the front grille receives a brand new mesh design which features a distinct “G” motif pattern.

In addition, a new T-shaped diffuser brings a confident presence to the Yaris GR SPORT.

Interior

The GAZOO Racing theme continues into the interior with GAZOO Racing logos on the steering wheel, seat headrest, push-to-start button and main instrument display.

Seats feature a new fabric trim with red accented stitching on all grades, while a new Ultrasuede™ seat with heating is offered as an option. The red stitching is also extended to the steering wheel in perforated leather and gear shift.

The door trim, side register, console and steering wheel all feature GR SPORT exclusive gun metal silver finishes.

Performance

The new Yaris GR SPORT is available with either the 1.5-litre hybrid or the 1.5-litre petrol equipped with Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) which automatically increases the engine revs when downshifting to ensure smooth gear changes. The iMT system also works when shifting up through the gears to reduce shift shock. Smooth standing starts are also ensured, and the risk of stalling is negligible.

Both front and rear suspensions have been upgraded to deliver enhanced performance. The shock absorbers have been optimised so that at lower speeds, they react quicker to offer improved steering response and ride comfort. Additionally, in the rear, the springs are optimised to supress body tilt or wheel lift during acceleration and braking to ensure a smooth and Fun to Drive experience.

The Electronic Power Steering of the Yaris GR SPORT has been updated to reduce steering input delay which means enhanced lane trace accuracy and a more responsive steering feel.

Additional underfloor braces on both sides of the Yaris GR SPORT enhances the car’s body rigidity, handling and stability.

Aerodynamic performance has been improved with additional liners inside the front and rear wheel housing to reduce drag.

The new Yaris GR SPORT will be available in Europe from Q2 2022.

The introduction of a second model marks an important milestone for TMMCZ (formerly TPCA) after it transferred into the full ownership of Toyota Motor Europe in January 2021. Toyota has invested over €180M, transforming the plant to produce A and B segment vehicles on its TNGA B-platform (Toyota New Global Architecture). The plant’s capacity is now expanded, and three shift operations have been introduced for the ramp-up of Yaris and the introduction of new Aygo X in 2022.

Toyota’s investment also enables the production of hybrid electric vehicles at TMMCZ, reflecting the success of the Yaris Hybrid, which represents 80% of Yaris European sales mix. The hybrid electric powertrains for both TMMCZ and TMMF are manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland.

Selected by a jury of 59 automotive journalists from across Europe, the fourth generation Yaris receives the award 21 years after the innovative first generation was named The Car of the Year in 2000, a first for Toyota. The Yaris has also consistently been recognised by The Car of the Year jury with every generation of the model making the award’s shortlist.

The jury praised Yaris’ hybrid technology for its smooth driving, low emissions and accessible price point – illustrating why more than 80% of Yaris buyers choose the hybrid powertrain.

Yaris was also recognised for its design, dynamic performance, and class-leading safety.

Furthermore, TheCar of the Year jury particularly appreciated Toyota’s success in re-igniting passion for the hot hatch market across Europe with the launch of the GR Yaris.

The Car of the Year 2021 award comes just a few days after the new Yaris was named as the best-selling car in Europe for the first time, a clear sign that European customers agree with The Car of the Year jury!

Challenging 2020

Whilst 2020 shows outstanding sales results, it was also a year in which the Yaris production at Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (TMMF) was seriously put to the test. TME Executive Vice President Marvin Cooke, who oversees Manufacturing across Europe, looks back:

‘Ever-better’ approach

At many stages, the preparations for the new Yaris have been challenging as production of Yaris 3 continued in parallel with a large plant make-over to prepare for Yaris 4. Cooke remembers:

Customer’s wish is TMMF’s command

One of the major improvements with a direct impact on the car’s driving dynamics was the body rigidity: the number of welding points was increased by 9%. In the Welding shop, more than 70% of the robotics fleet was replaced or updated, resulting in a gain of ergonomy, precision and productivity. Some of the welding for example can carry on whilst the car is moving on the line. Thanks to connectivity, robots are now better maintained and any malfunction is detected more quickly.

With many customers choosing a Yaris bi-tone version, a lot of attention went into boosting the capacity for this option in the Paint shop by shortening the process time. Here, more robots allow for most of the cars to only have to pass through the paint booth once instead of twice. Adding to customers’ peace of mind, a completely new and automated process was engineered to apply the anti-corrosion coating to the underbody and more easily reach less accessible cavities.

Growing within existing boundaries

Although some shops were expanded, with the Plastics shop even doubling in space, the overall compactness of the 180 km² plant was safeguarded – a critical aspect of TMMF since Day One, and one that makes the plant in Northern France particularly efficient.

With the new Yaris, a greater number of plastics parts are made inhouse. Main benefits for the company - quality output control up, logistics costs down – have been paired with societal gains thanks to reduced transportation emissions.

The new plastics paint line has also been designed with the environment in mind.

Yaris takes Europe by storm, gets a second manufacturing site and a crossover sister

Yaris success is deeply rooted in Europe.

TMMF historically is home to the Yaris production and has seen cumulative production rise to over four million units, spanning four generations since its establishment in 2001.

In addition to TMMF, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic (TMMCZ) will start producing the Yaris later this year. TMMCZ is the former Toyota Peugeot Citroën Automobile plant which was renamed after TME took full ownership on 1^st January 2021. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland (TMMP) is the unit plant supplying the Yaris (hybrid) engines and transmissions to both TMMF and TMMCZ.

Besides a strong manufacturing commitment to Yaris in Europe, the region also hosts a large European supplier base, design and styling activities at its ED² centre in the south of France as well as R&D, Production Engineering and Supplier Support and Purchasing at TME’s Technical Centre in Zaventem, near Brussels. This means the new Yaris is not just manufactured in France but has been extensively tested and developed on European roads, for Europeans and by Europeans.

Solidarity down the line

With close to 5,000 employees and a cumulative investment of 1.5 billion euro, TMMF is an important employer in the north of France. It represents a strong industrial foothold whilst attracting a local supply chain in a region that was once marked by high unemployment but was reborn thanks in part to the support it gave to the TMMF project since the start, twenty years ago.

More than 400,000 masks have been produced inhouse in a minifactory installed within TMMF’s premises in the second quarter of 2020. 3D printers were operational non stop to produce face shields and adaptors for medical pipe cleaning. Engineers provided knowhow in the search to provide ventilation to two adults simultaneously, at a time when needs were high and hospitals were in short supply.

Since its launch back in 1999 and winning the Car of the Year in 2000, Yaris has become an overwhelming success for Toyota, both in sales volume and in raising the brand's profile. Steadily growing from year to year, in 2019 the third-generation model achieved around 224,000 sales in Europe, accounting for around 22% of Toyota's European business and a segment share of just less than 8%.

The four millionth Yaris made in Europe is a fourth-generation model and features a fourth-generation Toyota Hybrid System to deliver the lowest fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in the segment [3.7l/100km and 85 g/km (WLTP)]. Toyota's engineers achieved this result whilst ensuring higher power (116 DIN hp) and greater fun to drive than the previous generation model.

The engineering team also maintained its safety DNA by making the new Yaris the safest car in its segment. In passive safety, Toyota received the 2020 SAFETYBEST award for the development and standard fitment of centre airbags in Yaris – a first in the European B-segment. Toyota's best-selling car also comes with the latest version of Toyota Safety Sense, including a number of segment-first active features as standard.

Looking forward, Yaris Cross will soon begin production alongside Yaris at TMMF.

The new Yaris, based on the new GA-B platform, has been designed and developed with all the latest safety measures, including a very strong and stiff body for best protecting the occupants. It is the first Toyota to be equipped with SRS centre airbags. Fitted as standard, these deploy in the event of a side impact to help prevent the driver and front seat passenger colliding with each other.

The new Yaris is also equipped with the latest Toyota Safety Sense, actually the first Toyota model to be fitted with the most advanced system. On top of all the features like Pre-Collision System (PCS) with an urban function with a Pedestrian and Cyclist recognition function and Lane Departure Alert (LDA), radar based Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), including Lane Trace Assist, it also features Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, like Emergency Steering Assist and Intersection Assistance, a first on any Toyota.

It is the second time that Toyota has received the SAFETYBEST award. The last time was in 2017 for the implementation of Toyota Safety Sense as standard across the line-up. TSS is not only standard on all Yaris, but also features many news Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, demonstrating that safety is fundamental to any new Toyota.

The new Yaris is also on the list of finalists for the `AUTOBEST 2021 –Best Buy Car of Europe` award.

It has been designed to be agile on crowded and confined urban streets, reflected in its compact proportions and class-leading, tight turning circle, while at the same time providing a spacious, comfortable and high-quality interior with equipment specifications that meet all today’s customer priorities for connectivity and seamless access to information.

The key to Toyota meeting its ambitions for the new Yaris is its first application of the Toyota New Global Architecture – TNGA – philosophy to a small car, introducing the modular GA-B platform that will underpin a series of new models. The GA-B platform is central to the Yaris’ improved dynamic performance, giving a lower centre of gravity and much greater body rigidity. It also enabled the designers to create a more distinctive and powerful-looking car with an appealing and individual identity.

The new model uses the latest evolution of Toyota’s fourth-generation hybrid electric powertrain, giving the car better fuel economy, lower emissions and a greatly enhanced capability to operate on its electric power alone, at higher speeds and over longer distances.

In fact, on urban journeys, new Yaris can operate for a significant amount of the time with zero emissions, just like a battery electric vehicle, but with no concerns about recharging.

Reinforcing its reputation as a segment leader in safety, the Toyota Yaris again raises the standard. True to Toyota’s commitment to democratising safety, it benefits from a greater range of Toyota Safety Sense active systems as standard, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), such as Lane Trace Assist, Emergency Steering Assist and Intersection Turn Assistance.

The functionality of the Pre-Collision System has been increased so that it can detect pedestrians by day and night and cyclists in daytime driving. New Yaris also offers segment-first Intersection Turn Assistance to recognise collision risks with oncoming traffic and pedestrians when making a turn at an intersection, and is the first Toyota to be equipped with centre airbags. These help prevent driver and passenger colliding with each other in a side impact.

With these provisions and the benefit of significantly increased body rigidity from the GA-B platform, Toyota aims to make the new Yaris the world’s safest small car.

Product development

Yasunori Suezawa is the Chief Engineer of the new Yaris and he has a clear vision of what the car needs to deliver at a time of radical change in the motor industry. He said: “We reconsidered the values required of a compact vehicle as we moved into the next generation. The essentials are fuel economy, safety, spaciousness, usability, and performance. But we must also deliver enjoyable driving to each and every customer – a quality we express in the new Yaris’ theme of ‘ready to go’.”

The development programme brought together skilled people from Toyota’s planning, design, production engineering and manufacturing divisions in a group that became known internally as The Compact Car Company. Its aim was to make ever-better cars and a more exciting new Yaris, a mission founded on the opportunities provided by the new GA-B platform and the fourth-generation hybrid electric powertrain.

Yaris heritage

The Toyota Yaris has an impressive heritage as an innovator. The first-generation model, launched in 1999, was Toyota’s first model to win the European Car of the Year title, and was distinguished by its “big small” character with its remarkably spacious interior.

The second-generation Yaris was the first B-segment model to gain a top five-star rating in Euro NCAP’s safety testing programme, while the third-generation introduced hybrid electric power to the small car market for the first time and made further advances in safety with the standard provision of Toyota Safety Sense advanced driver assistance systems.

Yaris and the European market

In 20 years, the Yaris has become Toyota’s most important model in Europe, steadily increasing both its sales volume and its market share. In 2019 it recorded around 224,000 sales and took 7.6% of the B-segment market, making it Toyota’s best-selling model in the region, accounting for more than 22% of its new car business.

Toyota predicts the B-segment will remain strong part of the market in Europe in the next few years and that Yaris will continue to be one of its principal models, responding to the market’s requirement for cars that have even better fuel economy and lower emissions in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations.

New Yaris also responds to the changing priorities of European small car customers, with rational issues such as cost, practicality, safety and quality being joined more emotional considerations, including style, sportiness, a youthful image and fun-to-drive performance.

Manufacturing

The new Yaris is built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing France’s Onnaing plant, near Valenciennes, where €300 million has been invested to enable TNGA vehicle production. The 1.5-litre Hybrid Dynamic Force engine and the hybrid transmission are manufactured by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland.

DESIGN

• Designed for a condensed and agile look and “ready-to-go” character

• Driver’s cockpit designed around the concept of “eyes on the road, hands on the wheel”

Exterior design

The new Yaris returns to the “big small” concept that inspired the first-generation model but interpreting it anew in a “condensed and agile” look that expresses a sense of the car being full of energy and dynamism and always ready-to-go.

Chief Engineer Yasunori Suezawa explained: “I wanted the styling to capture the stance of an athlete on the starting blocks. You can see this in the rear wings and the car’s new proportions – wider, lower and more compact – giving the impression of condensed power.”

While many B-segment models have been growing progressively longer, the new Yaris is actually shorter than the current model. But although overall length has decreased to less than four metres, the wheelbase has been extended by 50 mm, giving extra cabin space.

The GA-B platform has allowed the overall height to come down by 40 mm, while an increase in the vehicle’s width by 50 mm and an extra 57 mm in the track add to the car’s overall low, wide and powerful stance. The front and rear overhangs have been reduced, too, with 10 mm taken from the front (800 mm) and 45 mm from the rear (580 mm), further accentuating the overall compact dimensions and giving a class-leading turning radius, ideal for negotiating urban streets and parking spaces.

The new platform also gave the designers more freedom to produce an eye-catching, impactful design and emphasise Toyota’s individual design identity compared to its market competitors. The effect of the condensed proportions is amplified by strong character lines down the side of the car, projecting a sense of forward motion. The muscular front and rear wings add to the overall taut, coherent look and, together with the sculpted door panels, express the car’s agility and “ready-to-go” character.

The frontal design is focused on the large grille and central Toyota emblem. The designers have added to the dynamic look by pulling the base of the A-pillar rearwards (which also improves the driver’s forward view) and increasing the bonnet length. The new light units feature LED technology and include turn indicators that alternate with the daytime running lights. The headlights extend towards the front wheels in a strong styling feature that also reduces the perceived length of the front overhang.

The wheels are available in 15, 16 and 17-inch diameter, according to powertrain and model grade.

Interior design and packaging

The interior reflects an overall “less is more” concept. It is a sharply designed space that has the solid, and high sensory quality and spacious feel of a car from a class above.

For the driver’s cockpit, the concept is “eyes on the road, hands on the wheel” with the arrangement of displays and controls organised to ensure the driver can focus on the road and keep informed of key vehicle data with the least distraction, and excellent all-round visibility.

“We worked on two main elements to achieve this,” said Chief Engineer Suezawa. “First we maximised visibility by setting the instrument panel lower and pulling the A-pillar further back. The front seats were also moved outwards, so there is more space between the driver and passenger. Second, we wanted to let the driver take in the flow of information with minimal eye movement, so we are offering a large colour (10-inch) head-up display.”

Details include a larger area of soft-touch padding across the dashboard; soft felt inserts in the door panels; a wider front console; a lower hood for the driver’s instrument binnacle; and a small-diameter, sporty steering wheel.

Compact but spacious

As detailed above, the new GA-B platform allowed for a reduction in the car’s overall length, making it the most compact model in its class, but with an increase in its wheelbase. This has been key to achieving interior packaging that ensures space and comfort for everyone on board, echoing the innovative “big-small” character of the original Yaris 20 years ago.

The new Yaris has more space (an extra 20 mm) between the driver and front passenger, and for a wider front console to be designed.

Similarly, load space is good with the boot measuring 700 mm deep and offering 286 litres of storage.

Driving position

The driver’s greater sense of control and connection with the car is enhanced by their position at the wheel. In the new Yaris three fundamental changes have been made to create a more engaging and comfortable driving position and support the car’s fun-to-drive character.

The seat has been moved 60 mm rearwards (which also contributes to the car’s improved weight balance); the hip point has been lowered by 21 mm to give a more dynamic driving position and ensure good head room within the car’s lower overall height; and the steering wheel has been angled six degrees more vertical. The wheel’s reach adjustment has been extended so that it can be brought 77 mm closer to the driver.

The steering wheel has been made smaller and sportier and has new auxiliary buttons with a greater tactile quality. This makes them instinctive to use without having to look at them – another element in the “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road” concept.

Driver distraction is also minimised with a “binocular” arrangement of the meters and TFT multi-information display in the instrument binnacle;the close-at-hand positioning of the eight-inch central touchscreen display, with sharp, high-resolution graphics; and the option of a head-up display.

POWERTRAINS

• New fourth-generation Toyota hybrid electric powertrain

Fourth-generation hybrid electric system

The new Yaris uses the latest, fourth-generation Toyota hybrid technology and introduces new components that have been engineered to be compact, lightweight and efficient. It also equips the car with its first TNGA engine.

For the engineering team, the focus was not just on delivering a more efficient system, but also on making the car more enjoyable to drive, with tuning and calibration to suit European roads.

The data indicates the scale of the achievement. Overall efficiency has increased by 20%, which typically would be at the cost of performance. In fact, power is 16% higher at 116 DIN hp (total system output), with a 15% improvement in 0-100 km/h acceleration, to 9.7 seconds, and sharper response to the driver’s use of accelerator.

The car’s all-electric EV capabilities have been transformed: speeds of up to 130 km/h can be reached and EV driving is possible for longer periods in urban traffic. This means drivers can enjoy many of the benefits of a battery electric vehicle, but at a lower price and with no concerns about when or where the battery can be recharged.

CO₂ emissions have dropped to 85 g/km and the WLTP combined cycle fuel economy figure is 3.7 l/100/km, a 20% improvement.

These values are unprecedented for a Toyota model and demonstrate the ability of hybrid electric technology to deliver even higher efficiency, without sacrificing performance.

The engineering team was committed to addressing the most common criticisms Toyota heard from Yaris Hybrid drivers. These focused on overtaking acceleration performance at highway speeds (the acceleration time from 80 to 120 km/h has been cut by two seconds to 8.1 seconds); quicker and more responsive acceleration at lower speeds, for example when negotiating a roundabout; and more linear, natural acceleration when driving on open, winding roads, to create a stronger fun-to-drive quality.

Each of the four principal components in the hybrid system contributes to the new Yaris’ enhanced drivability: the all-new Hybrid Dynamic Force Engine makes its debut in the car; the new lithium-ion battery; the all-new hybrid transaxle; and the power control unit. All have been developed using the TNGA philosophy, ensuring efficient design and ease of production at scale.

1.5-litre Hybrid Dynamic Force Engine

The all-new 1.5-litre Hybrid Dynamic Force engine is from the same TNGA engine family as the 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit featured in the Toyota Corolla and C-HR. It has a long stroke, 14.0:1 compression ratio and high-speed combustion with better temperature and pressure control. This contributes to the its exceptionally high thermal efficiency – 40% – ensuring that more of the energy potential of every drop of fuel is captured.

In common with all Toyota’s hybrid engines, it uses the Atkinson cycle, which keeps the intake valves open for longer, delaying the compression stroke. This improves efficiency and fuel economy, but reduces power output. Nonetheless, the new engine has a maximum output of 93 DIN hp/68 kW with a peak 120 Nm of delivered at lower revs (3,600 rpm).

The three-cylinder configuration also bring benefits in terms of noise levels. When running at 4,000 rpm, its performance is like a four-cylinder unit operating at 3,000 rpm, thus delivering more power and torque, but generating less noise.

The transmission is a e-CVT automatic – an electric continuously variable transmission – which provides linear acceleration feel and quiet operation.

Motor/generators

The hybrid system in the new Yaris has two motor/generators – MG1 and MG2. MG2 is linked to the front wheels and can be used as the power source to drive the vehicle. The motor rpm at which power can be directed to the wheels determines the maximum speed at which the car can be driven in EV (electric vehicle) mode, making MG2 critical to the car’s drivability on electric power.

MG1 is deployed to start the engine and to generate power to charge the battery.

Lithium-ion Hybrid Battery

The new Yaris adopts a lithium-ion hybrid battery, with voltage rising from 144 to 177.6 V. The number of cells has been reduced, from 120 to 48. The current flow is significantly improved: by 100% into the battery and 50% out.

With a significantly higher power density, the battery is both smaller and lighter, by 12 kg. Its compact dimensions allow it to be located beneath the rear passenger seat, together with the auxiliary battery, avoiding intrusion in the load space.

Lithium-ion battery technology is better able to supply current flow, which is key to the new Yaris having powerful EV performance in urban driving.

Hybrid Transaxle

The all-new hybrid transaxle is more compact and lightweight, with the two motor generators placed on multiple shafts instead of being placed one behind the other, reducing the unit’s width by around 37 mm. Motor/Generator 2 benefits from new segment-type coils on the stator, which makes the unit more compact. It can deliver 59 kW of power and 141 Nm of torque to the front wheels at a maximum 17,000 rpm. The key benefit is a major improvement in performance, so that the engine can be turned off and the vehicle run in all-electric EV mode at speeds up to 130 km/h.

The transaxle also has a new oil pump, driven by the ring gear, which provides lubrication for both the gears and motor/generator 2.

Power Control Unit

The Power Control Unit has the capacity to handle 100 A of current, boosting the 177 V from the battery to 580 V and using transistor control in the inverter to change the current from direct to alternating. The transistors’ efficiency is affected by heat control inside the unit; by arranging them vertically, they can be cooled on both sides, allowing for more accurate heat control and thereby a higher frequency of current switching – up to 10,000 times a second. This makes a significant contribution to the system’s efficiency and transfer of power to the motor.

The converter in the power control unit converts the 177 V from the hybrid battery to 12V to power the car’s auxiliary components.

Power Split Device

The power split device is the heart of the hybrid system, governing the interaction between the components. It enables the car to operate as a parallel hybrid with the motor/generator 2 powering the car alone, or in combination with the hybrid petrol engine.

Additional powertrains

The new Yaris is also available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine with six-speed manual or continuously variable transmission (W-CVT) with a wide range – W – in first gear. This is essentially the same new three-cylinder unit featured in the hybrid system; compared to competitor small-capacity turbocharged engines, it offers good emissions and fuel economy performance.

In certain markets, a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, similar to the one featured in the previous-generation Yaris, is available as an entry point to the new Yaris range.

New GA-B platform

The new Yaris’ GA-B platform is the backbone of its dynamic quality, engineered to give a confident and natural drive. The car’s stability inspires confidence, while its response to the driver’s inputs is natural and precise, communicating a heightened sense of agility.

The combination of the car’s compact, low and wide dimensions, the quality of the GA-B platform and the performance of the fourth-generation hybrid powertrain gives the car an essential fun-to-drive quality that strengthens its emotional appeal.

Around town, it offers agile handling, with a best-in-class 4.9 m turning circle and crisp steering response making it considerably easier to manoeuvre and park on busy urban streets, while on the highway or open road, performance is smooth and relaxing with excellent straight-line stability.

“I wanted to transform Yaris’ driving dynamics, delivering what we call a confident and natural drive,” said Chief Engineer Suezawa. “That’s one that is smooth, accurate and agile, contributing to the fun of driving. It is the TNGA chassis that has made all this possible.”

The GA-B platform will be used for all Toyota’s future small cars, including its new B-SUV model.

High-rigidity body

The high-rigidity body contributes to higher safety levels (detailed in the Safety chapter below) superior chassis handling and responsiveness, ride comfort, and lower noise and vibration levels.

The new Yaris’ GA-B platform – including both chassis and drivetrain – delivers a 37% increase in torsional rigidity, taking it to a best-in-segment level. This has been achieved through a series of body reinforcements, a stiffer dash panel and more extensive use of spot welds and bonding adhesive in the car’s construction.

The car’s longitudinal beams are connected to the bumper reinforcements, and in the front suspension the top of the shock absorber serves as the upper steering pivot. Further rigidity has been gained from a new ring structure in the dash/cowl area, while in the middle section of the car there are reinforcements to the tunnel and rear structure, creating another robust ring structure.

At the rear, gussets have been added to the wheelhouse floor panel, with reinforcements to the wheelhouse and rear pillar again forming a ring structure.

Low centre of gravity

As in all TNGA-based models, the new Yaris has a low centre of gravity – around 12 mm lower than the current model – giving the car better inertia characteristics and making it feel more stable when cornering at speed. This reduction has been achieved by moving heavier components closer to the centre of the car, and setting them lower, starting with the roofline and including the engine and the seats.

As well as a lower centre of gravity, the car has an improved weight balance, both front/rear and left/right, which helps reduce body roll and improve braking stability and stopping distances.

Suspension

The suspension design is critical to a car’s driving dynamics. One of the most significant applications of the TNGA philosophy is to ensure that each new model benefits from the optimum set-up. The Yaris has an all-new arrangement, with the front MacPherson struts set at a revised angle, operating with reduced friction. The top of the shock absorbers now serves as the upper steering pivot, while the change in suspension angle has allowed for better alignment of the shock absorbers and springs, resulting in less vibration.

The rear torsion beam has been made 80% stiffer and the rear roll stiffness has been increased more than 80%, reducing body roll when cornering and improving the car’s all-round agility. The increase in suspension stiffness has allowed for softer springs to be used. Together with the car’s improved front/rear chassis balance, this improves ride comfort.

Reduced noise and vibration

The GA-B platform brings further benefits in terms of reduced noise and vibration levels, making for quieter and more refined environment on board.

The platform architecture and the upper body are designed to reduce the amount of noise entering the cabin. The engineers pinpointed the areas where most noise intrudes – the dashboard and floor panels – and adjusted their design to filter out external noise.

Extensive body sealing, which also contributes the car’s rigidity, further helps keep noise away from the cabin.

Generous specifications

The quality of the new Toyota Yaris’ design and performance are matched by generous equipment specifications and the availability of features more commonly found in larger models from a class above.

Toyota expects up to 60% of sales to be of higher-grade models. This includes Mid+, the “centre of gravity” in the range; Elegant, which has a classic look; and Style, which has a more youthful and dynamic profile.

Across the range, standard features include Toyota Safety Sense, a reversing camera and an electronic parking brake. Options include Rear Cross-Traffic Alert with Auto Brake, to help safe manoeuvring out of parking spaces, a Blind Spot Monitor and Intelligent Clearance Sonars.

Colour head-up display

The new Yaris is the only model in the B-segment to offer the option of a 10-inch colour head-up display. This projects key information onto the base of the windscreen, in the driver’s line of sight, true to the car’s “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road” concept. The data includes vehicle speed, safety warnings (linked to the Toyota Safety Sense systems), navigation support and multimedia information. The driver can select which information to view using a menu setting on the multi-information display.

Premium features

Examples of the premium quality features that can be specified for the new Yaris include an eight-speaker JBL premium audio system, a heated steering wheel and ambient blue cabin lighting in the footwells, door panels and centre console. A full LED lighting pack is also available, including fog lights.

Seamless connectivity

All new Yaris models enable seamless, wireless smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing users easy access to their favourite apps using the car’s central eight-inch multimedia control screen.

Useful connected services can also be reached using the MyT Toyota app. Features include practical and useful information about Toyota, a “find my car” function and “last mile” guidance, providing step-by-step directions if you cannot park at your destination. “Send to car” allows the driver to plan their route while they are away from their vehicle and send it to their navigation system.

The app also logs driving data, so information about mileage, speed and acceleration can be retrieved at a later date. MyT can also provide reminders when the car’s service is due.

Wireless smartphone charger

A wireless smartphone charger is available for the new Yaris. Measuring 150 by 80 mm, it is large enough to accommodate the latest generation of handsets.

The Toyota Yaris has an impressive safety track record, the second-generation model having been the first model in its class to achieve the top five-star ranking in the European motor industry’s benchmark Euro NCAP safety testing. Subsequently the benefits of more advanced collision avoidance and driver assistance technology were made available with the introduction of Toyota Safety Sense to the range as standard in 2017 – another first for the segment.

The new Yaris takes small car safety to an unprecedented level and has been equipped to be the safest model in its segment. Its key strengths are a significant increase in body rigidity, a direct benefit of the new GA-B platform, and a leap forward two generations in Toyota Safety Sense. In fact, a number of new features and systems are making their debut in a Toyota, reaffirming Toyota’s commitment to democratising the highest safety provisions, making them as widely available as possible.

Being equipped with a data collection module, the new Yaris benefits from eCall to automatically alert the emergency services to the car’s location in the event of serious impact.

Increased body rigidity

Building new Yaris on the GA-B platform has brought about a 37% increase in the car’s torsional rigidity to the highest level in the B-segment.

This built in strength has been achieved through extra welding and bonding adhesives, additional reinforcements and the creation of robust ring structures in the body to increase stiffness (full details in the Driving Dynamics chapter, above). This added strength allows for better protection to impact forces, helping maintain the integrity of the cabin and the safety of the occupants in the event of a collision.

First Toyota with centre airbags

The new Yaris is the first Toyota to be equipped with SRS centre airbags. Fitted as standard, these deploy in the event of a side impact to help prevent the driver and front seat passenger colliding with each other.

Toyota Safety Sense

Being a small car is no barrier to the new Yaris benefiting from the latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). An established pioneer it its class in the field of active safety provisions, Yaris now moves further ahead – not just benefiting from the latest-generation features but adopting a number that are appearing for the first time in a Toyota.

The Toyota Safety Sense package for the new Yaris offers more features than any other current Toyota model and is more extensive than any of its B-segment competitors, comprising:

• Pre-Collision System with vehicle detection, pedestrian detection (day/night), cyclist detection (day), Intersection Turn Assistance (vehicle and pedestrian detection), Emergency Steering Assistance
• Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (full speed range on Yaris Hybrid)

• Lane Departure Alert with Steering Control and Lane Trace Assist

Collision avoidance support

The collision avoidance support has been upgraded with improved operation and wider functionality. Notably the vehicle-to-vehicle speed range of the Pre-Collision System PCS) has been increased to 180 km/h.

PCS also gains the ability to detect pedestrians in the car’s path, in both day and night-time driving, at speeds up to 80 km/h, and cyclists, in daylight driving.

Intersection Turn Assistance

The new Yaris is the first Toyota to benefit from Intersection Turn Assistance. This helps avoid the common risk of colliding with another vehicle or a pedestrian when making a turn at an intersection.

If the system detects an oncoming pedestrian crossing the carriageway the vehicle is about to turn into, or if there is a risk of the vehicle moving across the path of oncoming traffic, it will sound alert and, if the driver fails to respond, apply automatic emergency braking.

The function operates at speeds between 10 and 25 km/h.

Adaptive Cruise Control

The upgrades to the Toyota Safety Sense systems include the Adaptive Cruise Control on Yaris Hybrid operating at speeds from zero to 180 km/h. It will bring the car to a stop if the vehicle in front comes to a halt. If the stop is less than three seconds, restart is automatic; after a longer stop, the car can be restarted with slight pressure on the accelerator, or by pressing the ACC switch. As well as improving safety, this takes much of the stress out of driving in stop-start traffic.

The ACC will also work in conjunction with the vehicle’s Road Sign Assist, to suggest an appropriate new speed setting to the driver when changes in speed restrictions are recognised.

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Control and Lane Trace Assist

Lane Trace Assist is also provided on the Yaris for the first time, together with Lane Departure Alert with Steering Control.

If the car unintentionally leaves its traffic lane, crossing a lane marking, a warning sounds. The driver can now additionally select steering control, which automatically keeps the vehicle centred in in its lane.

The system can recognise standard white and yellow road markings, and also road margins (kerbs, grass or earth), so that steering assistance is available for more of the time, both on straight roads and through bends.

If the road markings are obscured, or can’t be detected, the system will follow the path of the vehicle ahead, while keeping within the traffic lane.

Emergency Steering Assist

Emergency Steering Assist is another Toyota safety first. It supports the driver when there is a possible collision risk with a pedestrian or obstacle in the car’s lane of traffic and they have to swerve to avoid an impact. The system provides additional steering torque to enhance vehicle stability and prevent the car from leaving its traffic lane.

Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Blind Spot Monitor

To help prevent common bumps when manoeuvring at low speed, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is available as an option, including an automatic braking function that operates if cross-traffic is detected when reversing, or a static hazard when parking. This option also includes a Blind Spot Monitor which will alert the driver to potentially unseen vehicles to either side.

Intelligent Clearance Sonar with automatic braking

The Intelligent Clearance Sonar system can help owners avoid the kind of bumps and scratches that can easily occur when parking manually and cost a lot to repair. If the ultrasonic sensors at the rear of the car detect an object that’s about to be hit, automatic braking is triggered to prevent an impact.

TMMF has become the fourth plant in Europe to have introduced TNGA-based vehicle production after Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey (Toyota C-HR and Corolla Sedan), Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK in Burnaston (Corolla Hatchback and Touring Sports) and Toyota Motor Russia (Camry and RAV4). This investment further strengthens TME’s strategy to localise production and maximise manufacturing capacity. Toyota’s localisation strategy equally encompasses production of main vehicle components: the new Yaris is equipped with the latest generation of the 1.5L TNGA engine which is also made in Europe – at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland.

Additional investments and a second model on the way

An additional investment of €300 million, equivalent of half of TMMF’s initial investment, has been made to enable TNGA-based vehicle production. All the shop floors have been modernised with new equipment and technologies for improved ergonomics and performance. Amongst these works, one of the major expansions took place in the plastics shop with an additional surface of 3,500m² to accommodate new injection and paint lines, which in turn allow for in-house production of new plastic parts. TMMF expects the number of its permanent employees to reach 3,600 by the end of 2020, out of a total employment of 4,800.

Bringing TNGA philosophy to the compact car segment for the first time

The Toyota Yaris is at the heart of Toyota’s European success story enjoying sustained popularity and an excellent reputation for consistent innovation. In 2019, Yaris accounted for more than 20% of Toyota’s sales in Europe (224,368 units).

Designed for Europe and built in Europe as its first generation, the all-new Yaris features completely new, condensed proportions projecting a ‘ready-to-go’ character, ‘big-small’ packaging with roomy interior despite its compact exterior and an enhanced level of driving dynamics all thanks to the TNGA GA-B platform. The latest fourth generation Hybrid system offers longer EV driving capabilities, over 20% improvement in CO² emission and fuel economy compared to the current generation*¹ and yet increased responsiveness and drivability. The car is also designed to be the world’s safest compact car equipped with segment-leading active and passive safety systems. These include Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), a set of active safety technologies designed to help prevent or mitigate collisions across a wide range of traffic situations and the world’s first centre airbag in the compact car segment.

Production in compliance with COVID-19 measures

After five weeks of controlled production suspension in line with the COVID-19 lockdown measures taken in France, TMMF resumed its operations on 22 April. The initial production volumes were kept significantly lower compared to normal operations in order to focus on our number one priority - securing the Safety and Health of our employees and stakeholders by ensuring full compliance with the new hygiene and social distancing protocols and processes. Plant management will sustain its vigilance and ensure continued implementation of the Health and Safety measures against COVID-19.

The 1.5L engine is destined for the new generation Toyota Yaris (shortly to start production at Toyota Motor Manufacturing France, in Valenciennes) and the recently unveiled Yaris Cross - a new compact, B-segment SUV. Completely new TNGA production lines have been designed with a view to automate some of the processes, increase efficiency and production capacity and improve ergonomics.

Green credentials

The 1.5L engine is a strong piece of advanced engineering. This 3-cylinder gasoline unit with variable camshaft timing, working in an Atkinson cycle with up to 40% thermal efficiency, helps to reduce consumption and CO2 emissions by 20% compared to the previous Yaris generation, whilst increasing its performance by 15%. This engine can be installed in both conventional as well as hybrid electric vehicles. With 52% of TME’s sales being full hybrids in 2019, there is clearly a growing appetite for this affordable and low emission, hybrid electric technology.

Safety N°1 priority

The preparation of this new project proceeded according to schedule, even if the regular production at both sites of TMMP, in Jelcz and Walbrzych, came to a controlled stop between mid-March and 4 May, due to the COVID-19 outbreak. To ensure the health and safety of all our members and partners who remained present to implement the necessary TNGA line changes, an extensive range of preventive, sanitary measures was put in place. Our members’ safety being our highest priority, we keep on monitoring the correct and 100% compliance of these hygiene and social distancing measures and continue to review, where necessary.

A TNGA engine

Toyota New Global Architecture applies to all new Toyota models. Within the platform all individual types of chassis, bodies, and drivetrains are bound by common construction rules. The characteristics are a lower center of gravity and a more rigid body which translates into high level passive safety and comfortable driving. On the manufacturing side TNGA means more efficient automated production lines, with a modular design allowing mixed models production of different units, better ergonomics and lesser strain for the environment.

Centre of advanced hybrid technology in Poland

With a strong focus on the future of electrified mobility, TME continues to invest in the European production of electrification powertrain components at its Polish plants. Other than the 2.0L TNGA engine referenced to earlier, its sister Polish plant in Walbrzych has previously announced to start producing a new e-CVT transmission, in 2021. This brings the total cumulative investment in both TMMP plants to over €1 billion euro, creating close to 3,000 jobs in Poland.

The new B-SUV combines elevated ground clearance with an intelligent all-wheel drive system and Toyota’s latest hybrid technology.

There will also be European motor show debuts for the new Yaris and the new RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid.

Today’s compact car customers are amongst Europe’s most demanding and they typically undertake their busy lives in congested urban environments that present them with ever-increasing challenges.

They expect their car to deliver style and practicality. They want it to be easy to park, agile in the city and comfortable on longer journeys. They expect leading levels of safety and the lowest possible running costs. In addition they are more environmentally aware than ever before and seek relevant solutions that fit their daily schedule and surroundings.

And, of course, they also prefer these attributes to be delivered at an affordable price.

To respond to these ever-increasing demands, the new Yaris brings Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA) philosophy to the compact car segment for the first time.

For the new Yaris, this is delivered through the first use of the new GA-B platform, and the first use of the new TNGA 3-cylinder, 4th generation hybrid system.

This approach is complemented by advances in active and passive systems to create the world’s safest compact car.

GA-B PLATFORM ENABLES STYLISH DESIGN AND SMART PACKAGING

The new Yaris’ exterior design concept is defined as ‘Condensed and Agile’- always ready to move and enjoy.

Its ‘condensed’ dimensions set it apart in a market segment where new cars have typically grown larger with each successive iteration. Instead, Toyota has reduced Yaris’ overall length by 5 mm, but at the same time increased its wheelbase by 50 mm, ensuring the car is agile and manoeuvrable in city driving and parking, while keeping interior space and also delivering a comfortable interior - the essence of its “big-small” character.

The GA-B platform has enabled a 40 mm reduction in the overall height, but headroom has not been compromised as the driver and passengers sit lower. The reduced cowl height contributes to a better forward view for the driver. Adding 50 mm to the car’s width generates more space in the front and in the rear, while the wider front and rear track-widths add to new Yaris’ lower, wider look.

The exterior styling amplifies the effect of the condensed proportions with strong character lines down the side of the car that project a sense of forward motion. Powerful front and rear wings add to the overall taut, coherent look and, together with the sculpted door panels, project a sense of agility and the car’s ‘ready-to-go’ character.

The frontal design focuses on the large grille and the central Toyota emblem. By pulling the base of the A-pillar rearwards and increasing the bonnet length, the designers have added to the dynamic look. The new lights feature LED technology and include turn indicators that alternate with the daytime running lights.

The headlights extend towards the front wheels in a strong styling feature that also reduces the perceived length of the front overhang.

The interior design follows a ‘less-is-more’ principle, creating an open and spacious area for the driver and front passenger. High-quality materials include an innovative felt trim finish for the door panels and, for the first time in a Yaris, a soft-touch instrument panel to deliver a warmer cabin ambience.

Throughout, sensory quality has been a key focus point, in terms of the touch, operation and sound of the controls, colours, illumination, shapes, patterns, graphics and overall appearance.

The cockpit design has been developed around the concept of ‘hands on the wheel, eyes on the road’. Information is presented clearly and directly to the driver from three interlinked sources: the central Toyota Touch screen, a TFT multi-information display in the instrument binnacle and a 10-inch colour head-up display. The larger size head-up display helps the driver focus on the business of driving with least distraction. It projects key driving data and warnings such as navigation prompts and speed limits onto the windscreen within the driver’s field of view.

The new Yaris can be equipped with other high-tech convenience features such as a wireless charger that is large enough to accommodate the latest generation of smartphones, a heated steering wheel and special ambient cabin lighting around the driver’s cockpit, the ergonomic design makes controls intuitive to locate and use, while the dashboard itself has been made slimmer and is set lower, with a wider and higher centre console. The driver’s instrument binnacle has twin digital meters flanking the TFT multi-information display, and is presented with just a shallow hood. Last, but not least, the steering wheel size has been reduced for better visibility supporting the ‘eyes on the road, hands on the wheel’ concept.

Toyota’s development of TNGA-based platforms has delivered a step-change in the ride, handling and styling of a series of new models. The first, the GA-C mid-sized car platform, is the foundation for advances in the driving character and appeal of the latest generation Prius, the C-HR and the newly launched Corolla. Similarly, the TNGA philosophy has demonstrated its adaptability for larger sedans and SUVs, with the GA-K platform underpinning the new Camry and the new RAV4 to great effect.

Now, with the development of the new Yaris, Toyota is applying the power of TNGA to elevate its compact car performance for the first time. The new GA-B platform is central to the new Yaris’ enhanced driving enjoyment, delivering a confident and natural feel. The car’s stability inspires confidence, while its response to the driver’s inputs is natural and precise, leading to a heightened sense of agility.

The combination of the car’s compact, low and wide dimensions, the dynamic qualities of the GA-B platform and the performance of the fourth generation hybrid powertrain creates an engaging and agile character that is a key part of the new Yaris’ emotional appeal. Around town it delivers an engaging and crisp response. At the same time, performance and handling deliver the kind of smooth and relaxing drive that is comfortable and desirable when making longer motorway journeys or cruising on the open road.

As with other TNGA-based models, the driver’s sense of control and connection with the car is enhanced by their position at the wheel. The GA-B platform allows the driver’s seat to be set lower and further back (+60 mm compared to the current Yaris) towards the centre of the car, helping reduce the vehicle’s centre of gravity. It also creates a more engaging driving position, with improved ergonomics and greater adjustability. The steering wheel is set closer to the driver, with a six-degree increase in the tilt angle.

As for all TNGA-based models, the centre of gravity in the new Yaris is low, actually around 15mm lower than on the current model, giving the car better inertia characteristics. The chassis also has a better weight balance, both front/rear and left/right, which reduces body roll and improves braking stability and stopping distances, while the body’s improved torsional rigidity contributes to the car’s agile and stable handling.

The new front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension designs include reduced friction in the front struts, softer springs and an increase in rear roll stiffness from 320 to 580 Nm/deg, which further improve the new Yaris’ dynamic qualities, reducing body roll in cornering and increasing agility.

The GA-B platform has allowed for a significant increase in body rigidity, which fosters vehicle stability and ride comfort, together with lower noise and vibration levels. The platform’s architecture and the upper body have been optimised, with strategic reinforcements in the cowl, rear pillar, tunnel and rear structure and the rear wheelhouse, and a stiffer dashboard panel.

Toyota’s recognised leadership in self-charging hybrid technology is built on more than 20 years’ experience. With billions of kilometres of driving experience around the world, Toyota hybrids have also proved their outstanding quality, durability and reliability. It is estimated that Toyota hybrid vehicles collectively drive over 500 million kilometres around the world every day.

Since the introduction of the first Prius back in 1997, Toyota Motor Corporation has sold more than 14 million hybrid vehicles worldwide – including 2.5 million in Europe – constantly improving the technology and introducing new models across a wide range of market segments. The Yaris Hybrid, the world’s first full hybrid B-segment model, was introduced in 2012, since when more than 500,000 have been sold in Europe, establishing it as a key product in creating wider public awareness and appreciation of the benefits of Toyota’s hybrid technology.

The 4th generation Hybrid system has been tested in different cities around Europe such as Rome, Paris, and Darmstadt. Results show that when it is used in an urban area, almost 80% of the time is been driving in Zero Emission Vehicle.

Those outstanding results are made possible thanks to the architecture of Toyota Hybrid System, basically providing all the elements of an electric car with high power motors and high voltage components and at the same time very efficient engine following the Atkinson cycle.

Toyota’s new, fourth generation hybrid technology makes its debut in the principal powertrain for the new Yaris. This 1.5 Hybrid Dynamic Force system is directly derived from the larger, 2.0 and 2.5-litre systems that were introduced in the new Corolla, RAV4 and Camry models and has been developed with the same level of scrutiny on component size and weight in the quest for ever-better fuel and emissions efficiency.

The hybrid system features the new 1.5 Dynamic Force three-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine with variable valve-timing. As with its four-cylinder 2.0 and 2.5 counterparts, it benefits from detailed measures to reduce internal friction and mechanical losses and optimise combustion performance. In fact, the engine has the world’s fastest combustion speed, supporting high torque at low engine speeds and fuel efficiency. It is also fitted with a balance module, which helps reduce engine noise and vibration.

As a result, it achieves a 40% thermal efficiency, higher than typical diesel engines, helping secure a more than 20% improvement in Yaris’ fuel economy and CO2 emissions. At the same time, system output has been increased by 15% and power delivery refined to give a confident and natural feel.

The system also adopts a new lithium-ion hybrid battery with an increase in output that enables quicker vehicle acceleration. As well as being more powerful, the new battery is 27% lighter than the nickel-metal hydride battery it replaces.

The new Yaris will also be available with 1.5 and 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engines in selected markets. More details of these powertrains will be released at a later date.

The implementation of new advanced technologies means that new Yaris is ready to support our customers in their daily drives with maximum safety.

Advanced driver assistance systems include full speed-range intelligent adaptive cruise control and lane trace assist system found as on the recently launched Toyota models like Corolla. And all of these features are standard on every new Yaris.

In addition to Advanced Driver Assist Systems, the new Yaris has been developed to achieve best occupant protection in the forthcoming stricter standards for 2020. For instance, to better protect occupant in case of side impact, the new Yaris will be the first car in the compact segment to introduce a centre airbag.

YARIS – A EUROPEAN SUCCESS STORY DRIVEN BY INNOVATION

Yaris is at the heart of Toyota’s European success story, a model which has enjoyed sustained popularity and an excellent reputation for consistent innovation.

The original Yaris made an immediate impact, earning both the 2000 European Car of the Year honour and an Engine of the Year award for the ground-breaking performance of its 1.0-litre petrol engine. The first Toyota to be designed specifically for Europe, it has also been manufactured here, at our facility in Valenciennes, France, since 2001.

The second-generation Yaris had the distinction in 2005 of being the first car in the B-segment to achieve a top five-star safety rating in the independent Euro NCAP test programme, and was the first car in its class to be fitted with driver’s knee airbag.

The new Yaris’ exterior design concept is defined as ‘Condensed and Agile’- always ready to move and enjoy.

Its ‘condensed’ dimensions set it apart in a market segment where new cars have typically grown larger with each successive iteration. Instead, Toyota has reduced Yaris’ overall length by 5 mm, but at the same time increased its wheelbase by 50 mm, ensuring the car is agile and manoeuvrable in city driving and parking, while keeping interior space and also delivering a comfortable interior - the essence of its “big-small” character.

The GA-B platform has enabled a 40 mm reduction in the overall height, but headroom has not been compromised as the driver and passengers sit lower. The reduced cowl height contributes to a better forward view for the driver. Adding 50 mm to the car’s width generates more space in the front and in the rear, while the wider front and rear track-widths add to new Yaris’ lower, wider look.

The exterior styling amplifies the effect of the condensed proportions with strong character lines down the side of the car that project a sense of forward motion. Powerful front and rear wings add to the overall taut, coherent look and, together with the sculpted door panels, project a sense of agility and the car’s ‘ready-to-go’ character.

The frontal design focuses on the large grille and the central Toyota emblem. By pulling the base of the A-pillar rearwards and increasing the bonnet length, the designers have added to the dynamic look. The new lights feature LED technology and include turn indicators that alternate with the daytime running lights.

The headlights extend towards the front wheels in a strong styling feature that also reduces the perceived length of the front overhang.

The interior design follows a ‘less-is-more’ principle, creating an open and spacious area for the driver and front passenger. High-quality materials include an innovative felt trim finish for the door panels and, for the first time in a Yaris, a soft-touch instrument panel to deliver a warmer cabin ambience.

Throughout, sensory quality has been a key focus point, in terms of the touch, operation and sound of the controls, colours, illumination, shapes, patterns, graphics and overall appearance.

The cockpit design has been developed around the concept of ‘hands on the wheel, eyes on the road’. Information is presented clearly and directly to the driver from three interlinked sources: the central Toyota Touch screen, a TFT multi-information display in the instrument binnacle and a 10-inch colour head-up display. The larger size head-up display helps the driver focus on the business of driving with least distraction. It projects key driving data and warnings such as navigation prompts and speed limits onto the windscreen within the driver’s field of view.

The new Yaris can be equipped with other high-tech convenience features such as a wireless charger that is large enough to accommodate the latest generation of smartphones, a heated steering wheel and special ambient cabin lighting around the driver’s cockpit, the ergonomic design makes controls intuitive to locate and use, while the dashboard itself has been made slimmer and is set lower, with a wider and higher centre console. The driver’s instrument binnacle has twin digital meters flanking the TFT multi-information display, and is presented with just a shallow hood. Last, but not least, the steering wheel size has been reduced for better visibility supporting the ‘eyes on the road, hands on the wheel’ concept.

Toyota’s development of TNGA-based platforms has delivered a step-change in the ride, handling and styling of a series of new models. The first, the GA-C mid-sized car platform, is the foundation for advances in the driving character and appeal of the latest generation Prius, the C-HR and the newly launched Corolla. Similarly, the TNGA philosophy has demonstrated its adaptability for larger sedans and SUVs, with the GA-K platform underpinning the new Camry and the new RAV4 to great effect.

Now, with the development of the new Yaris, Toyota is applying the power of TNGA to elevate its compact car performance for the first time. The new GA-B platform is central to the new Yaris’ enhanced driving enjoyment, delivering a confident and natural feel. The car’s stability inspires confidence, while its response to the driver’s inputs is natural and precise, leading to a heightened sense of agility.

The combination of the car’s compact, low and wide dimensions, the dynamic qualities of the GA-B platform and the performance of the fourth generation hybrid powertrain creates an engaging and agile character that is a key part of the new Yaris’ emotional appeal. Around town it delivers an engaging and crisp response. At the same time, performance and handling deliver the kind of smooth and relaxing drive that is comfortable and desirable when making longer motorway journeys or cruising on the open road.

As with other TNGA-based models, the driver’s sense of control and connection with the car is enhanced by their position at the wheel. The GA-B platform allows the driver’s seat to be set lower and further back (+60 mm compared to the current Yaris) towards the centre of the car, helping reduce the vehicle’s centre of gravity. It also creates a more engaging driving position, with improved ergonomics and greater adjustability. The steering wheel is set closer to the driver, with a six-degree increase in the tilt angle.

As for all TNGA-based models, the centre of gravity in the new Yaris is low, actually around 15mm lower than on the current model, giving the car better inertia characteristics. The chassis also has a better weight balance, both front/rear and left/right, which reduces body roll and improves braking stability and stopping distances, while the body’s improved torsional rigidity contributes to the car’s agile and stable handling.

The new front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension designs include reduced friction in the front struts, softer springs and an increase in rear roll stiffness from 320 to 580 Nm/deg, which further improve the new Yaris’ dynamic qualities, reducing body roll in cornering and increasing agility.

The GA-B platform has allowed for a significant increase in body rigidity, which fosters vehicle stability and ride comfort, together with lower noise and vibration levels. The platform’s architecture and the upper body have been optimised, with strategic reinforcements in the cowl, rear pillar, tunnel and rear structure and the rear wheelhouse, and a stiffer dashboard panel.

The 4th generation Hybrid system has been tested in different cities around Europe such as Rome, Paris, and Darmstadt. Results show that when it is used in an urban area, almost 80% of the time is been driving in Zero Emission Vehicle.

In fact, the engine has the world’s fastest combustion speed, supporting high torque at low engine speeds and fuel efficiency. It is also fitted with a balance module, which helps reduce engine noise and vibration.

As a result, it achieves a 40% thermal efficiency, higher than typical diesel engines, helping secure a more than 20% improvement in Yaris’ fuel economy and CO₂ emissions. At the same time, system output has been increased by 15% and power delivery refined to give a confident and natural feel.
