Inspired by the fun-loving Toyota Aygo, the Aygo X has been designed and developed entirely in Europe and was launched in 2022. Since then, it has been a hit across the continent, achieving a 20% market share in its segment, year to date.

The Aygo X is a European model, fully designed and developed in Europe to meet the demands of European drivers. It is developed by Toyota Motor Europe in Belgium and production of the new generation began on November 13 at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic (TMMCZ) in Kolin, with sales now underway in European markets.

Stand-out compact SUV design 

The Aygo X’s impulsive, go-anywhere attitude has been refreshed with an all-new front design that reinforces its compact SUV identity.

The three-dimensional black front grille features Toyota’s iconic double trapezoid shape and combines with the larger 76 mm front overhang to create an imposing impression, alongside 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels – depending on the specification – and black flared wheel arches. A colour insert on the lower grille strengthens the stance and impression of a low centre of gravity.

Sophistication is elevated by bringing the bonnet shut line forward, partially concealed by the lights and front insert to minimise visible gaps. Moving the turn indicators to a more discreet location in the mirrors, and adding a powered folding mirror function, also adds to a contemporary feel, which is emphasised by full LED lights front and rear on the higher equipment grades.

A ‘mellow spice’ colour concept defines four unique personalities: Cinnamon, Jasmine, Tarragon, and Lavandula, available on High and Mid+ grades. With its fine metallic effect, Cinnamon brings a sleek and refined touch, while Jasmin’s understated tone-shifting transitions from warm to cool metallic shades. The solid effect of Tarragon conveys a calm, minimalist attitude, contrasting with the charismatic and complex Lavandula.

Bi-tone colouring on Mid+ and High grades adds to a dynamic presence, with black extending seamlessly from the roof to across the rear and down to the side sills.

An interior with space and style

The refreshed interior of the new Aygo X is roomy while retaining its signature fun-loving spirit. A quality feel is generated within a clean interior which is more comfortable, convenient, and connected thanks to modern technologies and practical design.

Despite its compact external dimensions, the new Aygo X maximises interior space and provides a high driving position for superior visibility. Four passengers can travel in comfort, and there is space to carry anything from everyday essentials to larger luggage with its 231-litre boot capacity.

A low-lying pagoda roof shape adds to the feeling of space, as well as reducing the frontal area of the car, which contributes to lower drag and CO₂ emissions. The optional retractable canvas roof creates an even greater sense of freedom by opening to almost 60% of the roof length. An exclusive design incorporates front grille-inspired elements in a gradation pattern.

A 7-inch digital combi-meter – up from 4.3-inch on the previous model – and updated heater control panel bring new technology to the dash. Meanwhile, the centre console has been reshaped to include a new electronic parking brake.

Both centre console and dash feature trims in a contemporary speckled effect on Mid+ grade and an eye-catching marble effect on High grades.

The steering wheel is trimmed with high-quality artificial leather, and includes a colour insert matching the exterior on the High grade. Premium seat finishes include elegant X-pattern embroidery and piping on the Mid+ grade, and perforated SakuraTouch® panels on the High grade.

For added convenience, two USB-C charging ports are included as standard on all grades. Optional features include a new wireless smartphone charger, a digital key, and nanoeX™ technology for improved air quality.

An optional JBL sound system creates a superior listening experience. It is achieved by two full-range speakers in the front doors in combination with 25 mm tweeters on the A pillars. At the rear, a 200 mm subwoofer – large for a compact car like the Aygo X – generates powerful bass and dynamic speaker response as well as clear tone.

An agile, responsive and quiet drive

The Aygo X delivers nimble handling for busy urban streets as a result of the GA-B platform of the Toyota Global New Architecture (TNGA), which provides a low centre of gravity and a highly rigid body.

Suspension, brakes and steering have been updated to achieve a more engaging and responsive drive. A new advanced braking system now includes disc brakes on all four wheels. Steering control systems have been tuned for lighter feel and greater agility in city driving. This is helped by a turning radius of less than five metres.

Rapid response and sharp acceleration performance are assured with Toyota’s full hybrid technology. Dedicated engine tuning creates a linear connection between engine revs and acceleration for a more engaged driving feeling. The downhill braking control supports safer deceleration by detecting changes in inclination and controlling vehicle speed even when the brake is released.

As well as adding excitement to the drive, the hybrid system contributes to a peaceful journey, particularly in all-electric mode. Seven new noise-damping components also make the latest Aygo X quieter and smoother. Dash silencers, bonnet insulation, and an engine underbody cover combine with an updated exhaust system and silencer to reduce driving sound. Mid+ and High grades benefit from further noise reduction measures, including thicker window glass and additional soundproofing throughout the body.

Toyota’s smallest full hybrid

The new Aygo X brings full hybrid power to the A-segment for the first time, extending electrification to the smallest and most accessible vehicle in Toyota’s range, while maintaining its signature condensed crossover character.

The latest Aygo X delivers a more energetic and exciting drive, with higher power and sharper acceleration. Shared with the Yaris and Yaris Cross, the powertrain features a 1.5-litre engine, and it fully replaces the 1.0-litre petrol engine of its predecessor.

The benefits of full hybrid make the new Aygo X an ideal partner for city driving, with class-leading CO₂ emissions of 85 g/km. That ensures it meets the challenge of low emission zones while improved power opens a world of adventure by making longer drives more comfortable.

Overall system power output is increased by 44 DIN hp compared to the previous version, reaching a maximum of 116 DIN hp, delivering a big improvement in terms of driveability and driving dynamics. This makes the Aygo X a more dynamic and responsive car, at ease in all driving environments from cites, to country roads and highways.

Integrating the hybrid components while retaining the Aygo X’s 2,430 mm wheelbase and boot space required innovative packaging solutions. For the first time in a Toyota hybrid, the two stacks of battery cells are positioned alongside each other across the width of the floor in a longitudinal layout under the rear seats. Other Toyota hybrids use a parallel configuration, which requires more lengthwise space. Smart use of the available space also sees the auxiliary battery moved under the boot space without affecting storage capacity.

Introducing the Aygo X GR SPORT

For the first time, a GR SPORT variant of the Aygo X is available, bringing more fun-to-drive sensations and a striking sporty look.

The GR SPORT version takes its name from World Championship-winning TOYOTA GAZOO Racing motorsports teams. Based on the High grade, the Aygo X GR SPORT adds exclusive performance and styling upgrades to reflect its competition-inspired nameplate.

Driving dynamics are sharpened through dedicated tuning of the shock absorbers and coil springs, plus a new wider diameter stabiliser, which combine to deliver precise handling and optimised body roll. Tuned electric power steering also provides a sharper response. Those improvements were specifically engineered to deliver excitement without compromising ride comfort on urban streets.

The Aygo X GR SPORT stands out with its exclusive Mustard bi-tone colour scheme and unique contrasting black bonnet. The distinctive “G-pattern” mesh seen elsewhere in the GR family is integrated in the glossy black front grille, while exclusive new GR SPORT 18-inch alloy wheels create a sporty stance.

Inside, a black and grey theme features piano black decoration, grey accents and GR logo embroidery. The front seats incorporate sophisticated SakuraTouch® and suede-like Dinamica material on the main inserts, along with grey Samara on the bolsters.

Safety and support

Safety is a priority across the Toyota range, and the new Aygo X benefits from a best-in-class safety and driver assistance package, via the upgraded Toyota Safety Sense technology and new hybrid-specific features.

Toyota’s hybrid technology adds a suite of driver assistance to the new Aygo X that optimise efficiency and ensure a smoother, more controlled drive.

Predictive Efficient Drive learns driver behaviour and conditions on routes programmed into the cloud-based navigation system. This information is used by the hybrid system to optimise battery charging and discharge control, in line with the road and traffic conditions.

Extended Regeneration Control contributes to more effective battery charging. When the accelerator is released, engine braking force is increased beyond normal levels to maximise battery charging.

Adaptive cruise control, with smoother braking and acceleration response for a secure driving feel, is activated via steering wheel switch. It also includes an Overtake Protection feature, which prevents unintended overtaking of slower-lane vehicles, while Overtaking Support helps match speed with traffic in the intended lane.

A new millimetre-wave and monocular camera upgrade the Pre-Collision System (PCS) to improve detection of pedestrians, cyclists and crossing traffic at intersections when the vehicle is making a turn. If a collision risk is identified, the system deploys visual and audio warnings, followed by brake assist and pre-collision braking. When the PCS is activated, the new Emergency Steering Assist helps maintain lane position and stability during sudden evasive manoeuvres.

Lane Trace Assist helps the driver stay within their lane and is supported by a Steering Assist function which can correct unintended deviation. For more secure highway driving, Lane Centring operates when adaptive cruise control is engaged to ensure the vehicle remains safely in its lane. When cruise control is not activated, a vehicle sway warning issues an alert if the vehicle is taking an unsteady line.

Additional features include a new speed limiter function, working in cooperation with the enhanced Road Sign Assist, and Automatic High Beam.

A reduced carbon footprint

For customers today, environmental awareness is increasingly influencing vehicle choice, and the hybrid Aygo X delivers excitement, convenience and efficiency to meet those expectations.

By adopting a footprint driven design and looking at every stage of vehicle use, production and distribution, Toyota estimates a reduced lifetime carbon footprint of the hybrid Aygo X by 18% compared to the previous generation. The ultra-efficient hybrid powertrain is the largest single factor, alongside use of new materials and efforts to reduce the impact of car production and logistics.

As an example, in-mould colour technology on specific components, whereby colour is applied directly during the injection moulding, is used to achieve an eye-catching effect and to reduce the CO₂ emissions for the coating process, compared to painting.

The use of recycled plastic and fabric for novel seat materials like the premium SakuraTouch® for an animal-free interior also help reduce the vehicle’s carbon footprint.

SakuraTouch® is made from more than 40%** of plant-derived PVC from the by-products of wood kraft pulping and also incorporates cork chip waste from the wine industry and recycled PET, but without compromising durability. This pioneering blend of materials significantly reduces CO₂ emissions during material production by 95% compared to genuine leather.

Furthermore, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic (TMMCZ) in Kolin uses renewable electricity while streamlined, smarter parts and vehicle logistics have also contributed.

Toyota hybrid history

The world's first mass-produced hybrid – the Toyota Prius – was launched in 1997. Initially, hybrid technology was primarily deployed in larger-segment models, such as the Camry Hybrid in 2006 and the RAV4 Hybrid in 2016.

Gradually, it was introduced into more compact categories. “The Sound of Noise”, an innovative playlist of original sounds, celebrates the creation of the Aygo X JBL, a new special edition of Toyota’s compact urban crossover, with stimulation, relaxation and information to emphasise the vehicle’s unique character and its premium JBL sound system.

Toyota commissioned three tracks which capture the Aygo X JBL special edition’s distinctive character by combining emotions and technology in a contemporary package ideally suited to a busy European lifestyle. Mirroring the youthful Aygo X’s fresh and fun outlook, the three-track playlist comprises a drive through Berlin, a playful collection of sounds generated via the vehicle itself and an informative discussion about audio technology.

Listeners are transported to the heart of Germany’s capital to take an evocative audio journey at the wheel of the nimble Aygo X JBL, which has the agility and confidence-inspiring driving position to excel in an urban environment. A microphone inside the vehicle captured every sound of a trip through a varied city soundscape, conjuring a spirit of adventure whilst encouraging the listener to relax on a stress-free journey. Mechanical sounds combine with the ebb and flow of traffic through Berlin, where passing bicycles ring their bells and the hum of sidewalk conversation is punctuated by the rumble of nearby traffic. 

For deeper relaxation, listeners can immerse themselves in the ASMR Textures track, inspired by the concept of autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), the physical sensation created by sounds, often everyday noises, which promote relaxation. ASMR sounds are used to unwind, banishing the stresses of a busy life, and the concept has grown in popularity, with some tracks streamed by millions of users. The Aygo X has attracted new style-conscious buyers to Toyota since first hitting Europe’s roads in 2022, building on the youthful and fun character which has already excited Aygo drivers for almost two decades whilst introducing a more confident driving position and spacious interior.

By moving from a hatchback to a crossover body type, Toyota’s stylists in Europe created a unique sense of emotion in the Aygo X. This was mirrored by JBL’s audio experts, who crafted a premium sound system specifically for the car, optionally available on all models and now standard on the new Aygo X JBL special edition.

Definition of the sound system specifications began whilst the Aygo X was still in development, via virtual models to help determine the most suitable equipment. As well as sound quality, JBL engineers also prioritised a lightweight system to contribute towards lower vehicle weight, which benefits fuel efficiency and tailpipe emissions.

Hundreds of hours of dedicated work and precision adjustments went into designing a dynamic sound system tailored to the vehicle’s exact interior characteristics. The location of speakers plays a significant role in creating a wide sound stage, achieved by two full-range speakers in the front doors in combination with 25-millimetre tweeters on the A pillars.

At the rear, a 200mm subwoofer – large for a compact car like the Aygo X – generates powerful bass and dynamic speaker response as well as clear, dynamic sound. A 300W amplifier under the passenger seat has six channels, which JBL engineers used to fine-tune frequencies for a concert-style sound, ideally suited to rock and pop music.

Thanks to Toyota Smart Connect, a driver can select the music of their choice easily as well, through wired and wireless smartphone connectivity via Android Auto® and Apple CarPlay®, all controlled on a large 10.5-inch high-definition touchscreen display unit.

While the sound system stimulates the ears, the exterior of the bold new Aygo X JBL catches the eye in new Jasmine Silver and bi-tone black paint, designed to create a stark and aesthetic contrast, accentuated by black decorative elements on the front, rear and side underruns. The bi-tone colouring extends to the rear and merges with the side rockers and front wheel arches to create a truly unique character, accentuated by distinctive 18-inch black and Dark Jasmine alloy wheels.

To emphasise its premium JBL sound system, the Aygo X JBL features unique branding and visual signatures inside and out. A JBL logo adorns the car’s rear, while elements are reproduced on the rear window panel. Inside the compact yet spacious interior, premium colour matched seat trim includes the JBL logo so customers can ride in style as well as comfort.

The Aygo X JBL will be sold in selected European markets from October 11 and is launched with an innovative playlist “The Sound of Noise”, which celebrates the creation of the Aygo X JBL with stimulation, relaxation and information to emphasise the vehicle’s unique character and its premium JBL sound system.

Premiering in conjunction with the UNDERCOVER Fall 2023 catwalk show at Paris Fashion Week, the Aygo X UNDERCOVER features unique interior and exterior design features, in a drop of just 5,000 cars.

Inspired by Takahashi’s design philosophies of non-conformity and breaking stereotypes, design updates include an exclusive bi-tone grey body colour specially developed by Toyota, coral red accents for the black 18” alloys and interior, branded seats and monogram pattern floor-mats, and his CHAOS / BALANCE motto spelled out in roof stickers. This is anything but your usual car collaboration.

The familiar UNDERCOVER theme of overlapping contrasts - punk and couture, digital and analogue – extend into this collaboration as now the worlds of fashion and automotive collide perfectly to drive a launch campaign set in the semi-fictional world of Paris, Tokyo. A ‘hidden city’ where virtual and physical are blurred, inspired by the look and attitude of two places at the heart of the collaboration. Where Harajuku underground culture meets the contemporary savoir faire of Le Marais. Occupied by a community raised on UNDERCOVER, and full of signature Jun Takahashi Easter eggs for fans to discover.

“It was my first experience working on a car, and with Toyota being such a prestigious and innovative Japanese brand, it came with deep emotional meaning and significance,” says Takahashi. “Fusing together two contradicting elements, or worlds, is exciting for me and both the materials and how we supplied the colours differ completely from clothing collaborations. Cityscapes inspire colours that feel typically UNDERCOVER, blending in with everyday life but questioning convention if you look below the surface, and I believe we have a design that is still very much UNDERCOVER while working in harmony with the city. I drive my own car every day and recognise the significance colour can have.”

UNDERCOVER was founded in 1990 by Jun Takahashi and first became known in the Harajuku underground scene for its unique fusion of art, streetwear, and music subcultures. Flared wheel arches and mouldings further emphasise the large diameter tyres to express the confident stance of Aygo X on the road.

Inhabitants of Europe’s cities will recognise the Aygo X by its wedged roofline, shoulder axis and rear door shape. Together with a unique bi-tone paint that goes well beyond just a different colour roof, these details all work together to give the Aygo X an impulsive, “ready to go anywhere”, attitude.

Despite the strong individual identity of the Aygo X, it remains unmistakeably a Toyota from the front with its iconic double trapezoid shape. While at the back, Aygo’s DNA, always known for its sense of fun, is retained with the glass hatch and signature lamps.

TOUCH OF SPICE

More than ever, new Toyota customers are demanding flair, distinctiveness, and the chance to make a personal statement.

Following the successful reveal and positive reception of the eye-catching “Sparkling Chilli Red” Aygo X prologue, Aygo X development was transferred to the Styling division at Toyota Motor Europe in Belgium, where the teams worked closely with product planning and R&D at Toyota’s European headquarters to turn the new A-segment car from concept to reality.

The new colour concept is inspired by various spices to develop a unique range of colours for the Aygo X, each capturing the flavours and personalities of the car. These four new premium colour palettes are only available with the Aygo X.

Cardamom conjures an impression of style and elegance, delivering a refined and understated aesthetics with the green’s low saturation effect.

Chilli is a fiery and premium colour that catches the eye of passers-by with a warm and deep colour reflection thanks to the inclusion of a fine sprinkling of blue metallic flakes in the red paint.

Ginger is a sophisticated and enduring beige which hints at a spirit of adventure and warm complexity in its hue.

Juniper is youthful with a touch of masculinity, and is a blue created specifically for the model to give it an icy coolness while adding subtle reddish undertones.

Each of these powerful spice colours are only offered with the bi-tone black paint, designed to create a stark and aesthetic contrast, developed with the entire styling of the Aygo X in mind. Instead of a simple black roof as with other models, the bi-tone paint also extends to the rear of the Aygo X and merges towards the front with the side rockers and wheel arches. The resulting effect creates a truly unique character to make the Aygo X instantly recognisable.

This spice theme isn’t just skin deep. Interior highlights match the exterior spice colours to give a distinctive design to the cockpit, including the dashboard and centre consoles. Closer inspection of the seats will show the “X” motif of the Aygo X discreetly stitched into the fabric. The Aygo X model name is also subtly echoed in the Keen Look headlamps to provide a strong and coherent identity.

A spicier Aygo X Limited in Cardamom will be available for the first six months of sales, featuring additional matte Mandarina accents in orange throughout the car with accent stripes on the exterior and on the bespoke 18” matte black alloy wheels. The Mandarina theme is also carried through the interior panels and leather seats.

Other monochrome colour choices will also be available, including Night Sky Black, Pure White and Shimmering Silver depending on the grade.

COMPACT AND AGILE

In adapting the proven and successful GA-B platform from the Yaris to create a unique crossover product for the A-segment, Toyota’s engineers modified the B-segment platform to reduce the front and rear overhangs and downsize the rear chassis section.

At 3,700mm in length, the new Aygo X is 235mm longer than its predecessor, although the wheelbase is increased by just 90mm. The front overhang is 72mm less than Yaris,

The crossover stand of the Aygo X is further emphasised with the front overhang which is 72mm shorter than the Yaris, and large diameter wheels which start from 17” and up to 18”.

Designed for the narrowest European city streets, the Aygo X also has an exceptionally small turning radius of just 4.7m, one of the tightest in the segment.

Total body width is increased by 125mm to 1,740mm compared to the Aygo. As a result, the front seats are moved 20mm further apart, increasing shoulder space by 45mm as part of the “shared interaction” cabin design to give occupants an improved in-cabin experience.

Luggage space is also segment-leading with 125mm more length for luggage in the boot, with total cargo capacity increased by more than 60 litres to 231litres compared to the previous generation. With the rear seats down, the boot space increases to 829 litres.

Furthermore, the Pagoda roof design maintains compact overall dimensions, while providing a comfortable, spacious cabin for driver and passengers. Vehicle height has been increased by 65mm to 1,525mm.

At the wheel, the steering system has been tuned for urban and suburban driving in Europe, coupled with the new S-CVT transmission. This delivers best-in-class initial response, intuitive gearing and linearity while keeping a strong power-fuel consumption balance.

CONFIDENT DRIVE

Whether going through city traffic or cruising on highways, every driver wants to feel confident, and the Aygo X delivers this confidence in more ways than one.

As a compact high-riding crossover, ground clearance has been increased by 11mm from the previous generation, giving the driver more presence and assurance on the road.

The seating position has been raised by 55mm to improve easy eye contact with other road users, particularly cyclists and pedestrians. Moreover, the A-pillar has been reduced in size and the angle has been increased by 10% to 24º, further improving visibility out of the cabin.

Larger wheels and tyres also work with the proven TNGA suspension, partly re-engineered for the Aygo X from the GA-B suspension. Together with improved roll stiffness and lower roll angles, this provides exceptional ride comfort and control.

EXPRESSING EMOTIONS

Aygo X is a car that knows how to express itself, even when it’s standing still.

In addition to the bold design and spice colour concept, the Aygo X also gives a feeling of robustness, thanks to the 40% tyre-to-body ratio befitting a crossover.

Interior noise levels have been reduced through extensive use and optimisation of sound insulating materials to create a quieter cabin. This represents a 10ppt improvement on the Articulation Index, making it amongst the top performers in the segment.

Toyota and JBL collaborated to deliver a premium audio system featuring a sound profile that is tailored to the characteristics of the Aygo X. The audio system consists of a four-speaker set up coupled with a 300W amplifier and a large 200mm subwoofer located in the trunk to deliver powerful bass, dynamic speaker response, and clear and wide sound stage.

The sky’s the limit in the Aygo X Air with the optional retractable canvas top, a first for an A-segment model with a crossover body type. The new canvas top is designed to maximise the driver’s experience by enlarging the opening by 40mm to increase the viewing angle by 20%.

Using high-quality materials normally found on premium models, the canvas top offers improved water and dust protection. The new wind deflector structure also improves durability and robustness for additional peace of mind.

TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED

The Aygo X is a compact car equipped with some of the latest big new features.

Customers will be able to stay connected and informed with their Aygo X via Toyota Smart Connect and the MyT smartphone app.

Toyota Smart Connect centres on a large 9” high-definition touchscreen display unit, featuring ambient lighting and embedded in the specially designed centre console with matching colour schemes. User experience is seamless with the accompanying MyT smartphone app, so customers can keep track of various vehicle analytics, such as driving analytics, fuel levels, warnings and vehicle tracker.

Toyota’s latest multimedia system also offers connected services such as cloud-based navigation through constantly updated live route information and road events, thanks to an embedded SIM card.

New services will continue to be introduced via over-the-air updates, so new software and connected services will be automatically pushed to the system. Toyota Smart Connect also offers wired and wireless smartphone connectivity via Android Auto® and Apple CarPlay®. Customers can also keep their smartphones charged via the wireless charging cradle.

Advanced full LED lighting technology is also being introduced to Toyota’s latest A-segment model, making this technology accessible to more customers. Daytime running lights and turning lights, consisting of two light pipes surrounded by a subtle glowing light, emphasise the iconic Aygo signature profile in all lighting conditions.

The Aygo X also takes a big step forward in terms of safety by introducing Toyota Safety Sense as standard in all markets for the first time on a compact A-segment model.

The latest Toyota Safety Sense employs a combination of monocular camera sensor and millimetre-wave radar, while the Pre-Collision System (PCS) with vehicle detection now operates at higher speeds. In addition, debuting on the Aygo X are day and night Pedestrian Detection, daytime Cyclist Detection, Collision Mitigation Support, Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Trace Assist and Emergency Steering Assist.

While comprehensive, Toyota Safety Sense is only part of the overall safety and driver aid technologies offered in Toyota’s line-up. The Aygo X also features technologies such as Rear View Camera and Rear Seat Reminder System. Together with Toyota Safety Sense, they make up the complete Toyota T-Mate package of safety and driver aid features.

The Aygo X also includes additional passive safety features, such as structural reinforcements for impact absorption to ensure all-round safety.

ECONOMICAL

The Aygo X has been designed to maximise economic performance from the ground up.

For example, Toyota’s engineers have worked hard to achieve the lowest body-in-white weight of any A- or B-segment car, even though the Aygo X has increased in dimensions overall. This engineering achievement helps deliver excellent fuel economy, making Toyota’s new A-segment car cheaper to run.

Front bumper and wheel arch mouldings further enhance fuel economy by guiding airflow slightly out from the tyres, thereby reducing turbulence around the front and sides of the car. The rear wheel arch mouldings also guide the passing airflow away from the tyres, and direct it to a convergence point at the rear of the car.

Toyota’s engineers also worked with tyre producers to design a type shape unique to the Aygo X which guides airflow as efficiently as possible.

The Aygo X is powered by the multiple-award winning 1-litre, 3-cylinder 1KR-FE engine that has been improved to meet European regulations while offering high levels of reliability and performance. The result is a combined WLTP fuel consumption rating of 4.7-5.0l/100km (manual transmission), 4.9-5.2 l/100km (S-CVT transmission), and 107-114 g/km (manual transmission), 110-117 g/km (S-CVT transmission) of CO₂.

A bold bi-tone execution of the Aygo X, coupled with the new spice colour concept creates a unique graphic profile that grabs the attention by emphasising the new model’s readiness to leap forward into action.

The new wedged roofline also increases the dynamic feeling for a sportier image. A dedicated team with a clear mission

ED² assigned a dedicated team to focus on a unified message from start to finish and they became quickly convinced that there was an opportunity to bring a bolder and stronger design. From this conviction, Aygo X prologue was born.

Bringing increased spice to the segment

The Aygo name has always symbolised personal freedom and mobility. With the Aygo X prologue, an additional cheeky mischievousness is added to the mix. It’s just as fun, and it’s now got an added edginess to it. From every angle, it expresses its attitude, with a strong personality and an even stronger stance. By bumping up the size of the wheels, the driver enjoys a higher eye point for greater visibility, as well as improved clearance for whatever the road may bring.

Styled to stand out

Whether from front, rear or side, the mischievousness of Aygo X prologue stands out. A bold bi-tone execution creates a unique graphic profile that grabs attention in the street by emphasizing the car’s readiness to leap forward into action. A new wedged roofline also increases the dynamic feeling for a more aggressive sporty image. While at the front, high-tech lamps hug the upper hood to form a wing-like shape. Lower to the ground, the large grille, fog lamps and skid-plate, all building on the hexagon theme, show that this is a car ready to go. Anywhere.

Practical and ready for tomorrow’s free spirits, Aygo X prologue also offers the features that will further enrich their freedom. A rear skid plate houses a bicycle-holder mount, so that escaping the everyday can always be turned into an adventure. Meanwhile, housed in the door mirror is an action-camera, perfect for capturing and sharing moments of exploration.

Finally, an integrated roof rack accentuates the vehicle’s profile, as well as creating a visual link with the hexagon tail lamps, a subtle reminder of the Aygo DNA.

The Colours of emotions

In life, colours are central to our emotions. This is also true for Aygo X prologue. To bring the “spicy” concept to life, certain ingredients naturally presented themselves. The top four were chilli, ginger, wasabi and black pepper. Spiciest of all is “chilli”. Moreover, use of bi-tone was an additional invitation to take colour balances to another level. In Aygo X prologue, colour is taken up yet another notch by the inclusion a fine sprinkling of blue metallic flake into the paint mix. The resulting dazzling effect makes the colour fully deserving of its name of “Sparkling Chilli Red.”

Working together differently, and better

The challenging project of creating the Aygo X prologue under present conditions has been a great test of ED²’s agile process of fast and fluid design development. Whether together or remotely, ED² design team worked seamlessly from hand-sketching to digital sketch-modelling, to virtual reality simulations, to 3D “speedshapes”, right to the final car itself.
