Brussels, Belgium – September 05th, 2018 – Last July marked a major milestone for sustainable mobility in Paris, France. HYPE, the world’s first taxi company operating exclusively with hydrogen vehicles took delivery of 25 Toyota Mirai Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles. After almost 3 years of operation this delivery takes HYPE’s fleet to 100 vehicles.

For Toyota, this represents a concrete example of how its Environmental Challenge 2050 is reducing the environmental impact of its vehicles. Toyota’s ultimate goal is to support the world’s transition from a carbon to a hydrogen based society. More than 6000 Mirai are currently on the road globally, but the ambition is to sell 30,000 FC stacks in the 2020’s. This delivery goes some way towards achieving that target.

In France, since June 1st 2018, hydrogen is gaining momentum. As part of the National Hydrogen Plan announced by the French Government, hydrogen mobility has been identified as a key element of this initiative.

“This delivery of 25 Mirai adds to the initial supply of 13 and marks an important step in developing the partnership between Toyota, HYPE and Air Liquide.  Together we are joined in the development of a hydrogen society”
Didier Gambart, President and CEO, Toyota France
"Like Toyota, and other manufacturers who have joined us on the Board of Directors of the Hydrogen Council, we believe in the future of this energy. I look forward to strengthening the fleet of HYPE taxis that we support as an infrastructure partner. This service will allow Parisians to benefit from hydrogen and to become familiar with this zero-emission transport solution on a daily basis.”
François Darchis, Director, and member of the Executive Committee of the Air Liquide Group overseeing innovation

This initiative is part of project ZEFER* that has received funding from the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) under grant agreement No 779538. This Joint Undertaking receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Europe Research.

“Thanks to project ZEFER, Paris now has one of the world’s largest hydrogen taxi fleets.  These vehicles contribute to lowering air and noise pollution whilst improving driver and passenger comfort.”
Bart Biebuyck, Director at FCH JU

HYPE is accelerating its deployment in Paris with the intention of launching an equivalent service in Brussels at the end of 2018.

*The FCH JU- funded project “Zefer” will deploy 180 hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles as taxis, private-hire vehicles and police cars in Paris, Brussels and London. The project acronym stands for Zero Emission Fleet vehicles for European Roll-out. It will deploy large fleets of 60 hydrogen fuelled vehicles in each of three European capitals. These vehicles will be used in the applications where hydrogen fuelled vehicles are the most valuable – fleets which drive long distances every day, which need rapid refuelling, and which operate in polluted city centres where zero-emission hydrogen vehicles can have the greatest impact on avoiding pollution.
